This revisionist collection of romance comics stories from the '50s challenges the cliché of the "tear-stained face" that later dominated the genre and became widely known and vilified as a tiresome icon of moral uplift.

These bright, naturalistic tales (originally published by Archer St. John and written by unrecognized comics master Dana Dutch) are about high school girls who may be inexperienced but definitely have minds of their own: they choose their guys, not the other way around, and they use their heads in dealing with life's difficulties rather than waiting to be saved by some cardboard Romeo. They make all kinds of mistakes, learn from them, and hardly ever suffer. What kind of mistakes? Well, there's going out with a prude or a conceited jerk, of course. But also, improbably enough: Allowing themselves to be picked-up by strangers in a neighboring town; leading guys on with heavy petting; making nervous boyfriends check into a room as man and wife, as a gag after the car breaks down; lying to the folks and going on a "thrill" weekend in the big city; eloping with a couple of rough guys they met at a riverfront café and finding out after the marriage was consummated that it was all a sham... Well, okay, in that last case they did suffer, but it was a rare exception.

Many of these stories are illustrated by Matt Baker, who achieved fame for his work on Phantom Lady and other sexy female characters in the '40s and '50s. His work for St. John is less known yet the most sophisticated and mature of his career. Baker was a superb illustrator and a first-rate draftsman with a slick, urbane approach to contemporary material. In addition to the stories themselves, the book includes also 16 pages of Baker's luscious full-color covers. Romance Without Tears is edited by comics historian John Benson, who also contributes an introductory essay.

The stories are very good which is what the author used to determine his selection of which stories to include in this collection. He does state in the intro that if art were the main criteria to be used for which stories to include then he would have selected all Matt Baker artwork. I personally would have prefered all Baker art as he is arguably the best artist for this genre. Some of the other art is mediocre. The selection of covers are all Baker's and they are excellent. If all art was Baker's I would have rated this book a 5.

In the novel, "Loving Without Tears" Angel is a 47 year old widow with two children--Julian and blossoming 18 year old Slaney. Angel has managed to surround herself with people who will do her bidding, and run her domestic life efficiently while she selfishly manipulates them to never leave her side. WWII took Julian away, but as the book begins, Julian is expected home. Angel, Slaney, Oliver (the Owlbeg estate manager), Finn Barr (handyman/butler), Birdie (Housekeeper), and Tiddley (cousin) all wait impatiently for Julian to arrive home and for life to resume.

Julian, however, returns with fiancee, Sally, an American widow. Sally's presence and Julian's new relationship throw Angel's plans into complete disarray. Angel and Sally are immediately at war, and the prize is Julian.

As I read this book, I remembered the play "Dinner At Eight." The novel "Loving Without Tears" reminds me of that play--the novel has the same sort of pacing, and the main character, Angel, seems to have walked straight off of the set of a 30s drama. She's overdressed, pretentious, and somehow or another has managed to hoodwink everyone in her life in this conspiracy that she's some sort of idol. Everyone worships her, but no one likes her. The main problem with the novel is its execution--I tend to find nasty characters far more interesting than nice ones, but if they're nasty, they at least have to be interesting, and wit helps. And Angel is ... well, boring. There is little or no introspection. She is simply shallow, selfish, and vain. At the same time, the other characters are rather flat and uninteresting too. The story had a promising plot, but it really failed to interest me. "Loving Without Tears" was a tremendous disappointment after the perfection of "Time After Time"--displacedhuman

Engaging, moving, and important story.......2004-09-02

Ken Miller's "Weep Without Tears" is a sequel to his earlier work, "Evening of Pale Sunshine," but familiarity with the first novel isn't necessary.

Mr. Miller has written a love story set five years after the fall of South Vietnam. It is a story of courage--from Amerasian orphans to a dedicated Army nurse to a coma patient, all are tested by events that require great personal strength and faith to overcome.

The attention to detail is riveting; whether the setting is the appalling brutality and squalor of Vietnam or the lush Hawaiian Islands, Mr. Miller captures the sights and smells and he places the reader directly and convincingly in each scene.

Although the plot relies a little heavily on coincidence, it's clear that Mr. Miller believes "things happen for a reason," and it comes through in this moving--and important--story of love, devotion, and determination.

It's rare for a story to strike such a fine balance among history, emotion, and sensitivity, yet Mr. Miller has accomplished this feat admirably.

This book was the continuation of the authors' first book, Evening of Pale Sunshine. I could not put this book down. I felt as if I was right there experiencing everything the characters were experiencing. The compassion especially from each one of the characters was so touching and so true to life. The author really writes from his heart and I hope he will write more books because I will be looking for them.

Ken Miller did a masterful job writing WEEP WITHOUT TEARS. The story has everything. Romance, pathos, cruelty, survival. It is good if you have read EVENING OF PALE SUNSHINE, but it isn't absolutely necessary. Mr. Miller brings the characters from EVENING OF PALE SUNSHINE into the continuing story easily. The hero struggles with the results and horrors of Vietnam and his devastating loss of memory. A beautiful nurse with a strong faith attempts to restore his life ........This is a MUST read. A great book.

Excellent book!.......2004-05-19

I could not put this book down and read it in a few hours..from the beginning you are taken into the characters lives. Ken has the amazing ability to transform you into their lives . The sounds and smells and expressions and feelings were so well written I could see the characters immediately. It is evident that Ken Miller has a passion for the country and the people. It is refreshing to read about this time in another perspective. I also enjoyed Kens first novel "Evening of pale Sunshine". I can't wait for the screen version of both!!

U really enjoyed the book "WEEP WITHOUT TEARS". Once you started reading the book it was really hard to put down as I found the book to be really exciting. It felt as tho several new people came into my life and after the book was finished they were gone, but you couldn't stop thinking about them.

I am anxiously awaiting the next book from the author.

The Truth Be Told.......2000-06-27

Everyone who has attended a number of Grateful Dead shows has become aware that something "magical" is going on. Those who "get it" are changed for a lifetime. This book is a compliation of social science research - usually as part of a Masters or Doctorate project - into that phenomena. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an academic approach to this magical and mystical experience. Be aware that the format is not in traditional narrative, but more the way scientific papers are presented - nevertheless, anyone who has been "on the bus" should put this in their library and those who are not on the bus, might finally get some understanding of why the Grateful Dead experience is truly transforming.

Reasons we followed the band..........2000-06-26

As a Deadhead, this is one of the things I've been waiting for. This is a wonderful collection of papers concerning one of the most influential "bands" in American culture. I recommend this to any Deadhead, and I recommend it to anyone who has ever wondered why we saw as many shows as we did, why we traveled across the country every season, and why we still continue to listen to their music. This should be read by anyone who never understood their sister's, brother's, or child's (make that parent's as well) need to see the shows and be among other Deadheads. This book covers so many facets of the Dead and their fanbase, and each paper is a scholarly piece of academia. Rebecca had such forsight to begin when she did, and I am thankful that she has found so many dedicated Deadheads who have written University thesis papers on the band. Joseph campbell and Jerry Garcia would both be very happy with this work, and I am again very pleased that a book covering this "long, strange trip" has been so wonderfully put together. A true sociological work, this should be considered by any sociology class in every University across the country. Thank you for a real good time.

The best thinking on documenting software architecture.......2007-01-23

Simply put, I think this book represents the best thinking about documenting software architectures. You can find other books that include different aspects covered in this book (documenting views, 4+1, ANSI/IEEE-1471-2000, etc). However, you will have a hard time finding a book that pulls it all together, provides the rationale and includes the "beyond" part which discusses other approaches to documenting software architectures and how they relate to the "Views and Beyond" (V&B) approach. For instance, the book discusses how to use V&B to comply with ANSI/IEEE-1471-2000.

detailed advice about designing.......2006-02-27

Clements shows how to use various notations to document your software design. Of these, perhaps UML is now the most common. The advice in the text can be used to first design your code, before programming. Certainly, you should somehow have a design laid out first. You do, don't you?

The book offers structural advice about how to do this. From the low level "mechanical" details of the UML notation, to more general conceptual issues. Various possible architectures are outlined. Client-server, n-tier and peer-to-peer. Enough to get you started in implementing these ideas.

The best to date.......2004-06-22

Software architecture really is unlike any other aspect of its design. The architecture has deeper meaning and larger scale than any other aspect, and can't be discussed in the same ways.

This book opens that discussion. Among the "architecture" books I've read lately, this is the only one to offer concrete advice on describing, presenting, and analyzing archtiectural features of a system. It identifies a number of documentation types and variations. It also identifies a number of different readers - developers, future architects, users, etc. - and addresses their different documentation needs.

The authors use a little UML, but not a lot. For one thing, standard UML works at too low a level for architectural discussion. Classes, and even hierarchies of class inheritance are such fine-grained entities that architecture gernerally won't address them. Instead, the authors offer a number of diagramming styles of their own. For once, I agree with the need for non-standard notation.

Even so, I think they under-utilize the existing standards in favor of their own terminology and notation. They could have used a UML profile for lots of the discussion. It would have had to be a new profile, however, not just a force-fit of the real-time profile. They also under-used the existing architecture standards (IEEE/ANSI, DoD, NASA, and more) in favor of their own discussion. Maybe their approach can be used in any of those frameworks, but that should have been more explicit.

I see only one major flaw in this book, the assumption that a software system's architecture describes the program delivered to a customer. That's way too narrow. A large system includes things like test harnesses, debug instrumentation, application-specific QA tools, and user documentation of many kinds. Those can be major undertakings of their own. They are intimately tied to the delivered software, and may constrain the actual product.

On the postivie side, this book offer an extensive real-world case study. That probably doubles the book's value, by putting a concrete face on the otherwise abstract discussion.

There are two ways to use this book: you can agree with it, or think about it and disagree with it. If you really think about it, though, you get it's full value whether you agree or not.

In other words, you can't lose by reading this book.

Quite skimpy.......2003-05-23

This is not a bad introductory documentation book, but quite skimpy in the amount of information and examples it contains.
Not sure it is worth buying at that price. I bought it after reading the previous reviews - I think they overrated it!

The only technical documentation book you'll need.......2002-10-27

After reading my colleague's comments I rushed out and purchased this book. I, too, am trained and certified in Information Mapping© and was impressed at how closely the approach in this book is aligned to that method. However, what I like most is the fact that this book can be used as guidance for a wider scope than just documenting software architectures because it shows how to organize your documentation requirements, develop clear documentation and manage the entire process from start to finish.

I also like the clearly articulated and illustrated advice about how to augment text with graphics, and how to select the views and associated graphics to document requirements, specifications and the finished architecture. An example of how this book goes beyond documenting just architectures is a project in which I was engaged two years ago. One of the major deliverables was a set of operations guides. While this is related to architecture with respect to how its used after it's in production, there were no books that fully described how to go about it in a coherent way. Using the advice and techniques in this book I could have greatly improved upon what I did produce. While I cannot change the past, you can be sure that I'll use this book to its fullest the next time I need to write ops guides, especially when it comes to showing component and connector views, and elements and relations.
