Read the book! See the movie!!!.......2006-01-14
Great fun to read! Not your typical sci-fi shoot-em-up-evil-aliens encounter. Actually a whimsical coming-of-age story with an unusual twist.
Interesting Trivia: Can of Worms was one of the first really successful movies made for and by the Disney Channel. Check out the cast members on IMDB.com to find some very high-wattage surprises!

Teacher in South Dakota.......2002-11-26
What a wonderful and exciting book! I read this book aloud to my third grade students and it kept them on the edge of their seats! This book sparked many interesting class discussions and when the students found out that there was a sequel to the book, the insisted that it become a part of our library. Mike, the smart child in the seventh grade, displays quite the imagination by sharing the Hanzel Chronicles with his friends. He is looked at as an outsider until the most popular girl asks him to help her with the Halloween dance. He makes friends with the popular jock in the school and the three of them team up with the help of Barnabus to fight evil aliens! This is a must read for any upper elementary child.
Excellent book for people that believe in aliens!!!..........2002-11-19
Is there really such things as aliens, UFO's??? Who heard of such a thing?? In this book a kid has a strong feeling that he wasn't born here, in other words an ALIEN!!!!! He and a bunch of his frineds gather in his club house every night and he tells storys of different aliens that are bad. One thime he gets up to a story about his people, or so he thinks his people!! He is the smartest kid in 7th grade and he plays football too. He has barely any friends and until one day he gets asked to help decorate the gym for Halloween by the most popular girl in school... the tables turn for him!! But his old friend and also best friend doesn't like him being "popular" so he decides to shun him. One day while he is walking home from school he walks in his house and finds a real live alien in his room making slime balls all over the floor!! He can't believe it!!!! Has this alien come to take him "home" and if it is will he accept the invintation???

A Nice Can of Worms Indeed.......2005-07-09
Lucinda Jane Perry's A CAN OF WORMS IN CARSONVILLE takes a lighthearted look of the things that plague small towns in the 21st Century, declining business, seedy main streets, and the divisions that can come when new people arrive with ideas that might bring badly-needed money, but not so welcome change. Dilly, a city girl married to a rancher, arrives in Carsonville, opens the Friday Shop, and joins the Chamber of Commerce. From there, she and a group of friends begin to think of ideas to develop the struggling town. Some people like the suggestions, and some people don't. Despite the nay-sayers, Dilly and her colleagues go ahead with the plans. The mayor calls a town meeting. People like up with dilly and against her. She looks into the crowd and wonders: will her ideas be accepted? Or should she give up?
With gentle candor, Lucinda Jane Perry captures all the types who live in small towns, the movers and shakers; the dried up old clods, the people who don't care, the people who can be persuaded to consider the possibilities, those who want change from the git-go. From setting up folding chairs in the old saloon for a Chamber meeting, to making decorations for Santa Claus Day, to discussions that go on and on and on, Perry vividly describes the joys, and frustrations of living in rural communities.
Her humor makes A CAN OF WORMS IN CARSONVILLE well wrth reading. We can get a good chuckle out of the silly notions that impede us all from time to time. IUnfortunately, sometimes the scenes get repetitious, which slows down the plot, but the descriptions of Carsonville and the antics of dilly, her husband Lea, and her frinds Roz, Janie, and Clarissa more than make up for this defect.
anyone who's lived in a small town will enjoy A CAN OF WORMS IN CARSONVILLE. People who haven't will come away with an idea of what the experience can be like.
Can't wait for the next Carsonville tale!.......2005-05-20
Wow. What a fun and charming book to read! Lucinda Jane Perry's book is pure pleasure from start to finish. As the characters are developed and the plot plays out, I found myself wanting to know more about the little town and its citizens. The characters actually pop out from the pages with Perry's distinct descriptions of their dialog, actions, and idiosyncracies! The character Roz is a gas! Her statements make for chuckle out loud material. Read this book and you'll find yourself anxiously awaiting another Carsonville story! Hope Lucinda Perry is busy writing more Carsonville stories for us to enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
Great example of the narrative power of comics.......2000-04-09
This brief and elegant graphic novel is the first from comics author/artist Catherine Doherty, and it is a powerful example of the deftness with which comics can tell a story. The story, in this case, is quite simple: a young woman, Catherine Margaret Flaherty (a thinly disguised version of the author), searches for her birth mother. The genius of this graphic novel is that there is no dialogue per se; instead, the only text we read is through various court documents, the main character's search notes, and letters. The bulk of the story is told through deceptively simple pictures. To read this book too fast would be a mistake, for the reader would miss out on the rich, understated details that Doherty puts in her frames, and the clever way in which she contrasts the "cartoony" look of her main character (and her mother) with the "realistic" look of the other people around her. My one complaint about Doherty's book is that it is too short. One reason that the length is a problem is because the resolution comes a bit quickly. Another (more important) reason is because I want to see much more by this very talented comic book artist.

Nasty.......2000-06-06
All the nasty anecdotes Mr. Shipman didn't have room for in the nasty re-writes he did of his (excellent) "Great Movie Stars" books. His vendettas against certain stars and critics (Ginger Rogers, Charlie Chaplin, Pauline Kael) are as bewildering as his blind admiration of others. Skip this and hunt for the first editions (circa 1970-72) of the Movie Stars books.

Cruciverbalists Delight!.......2005-03-29
Picking up this collection is an absolute must, for solvers of all ages and abilities. Contained within these pages, are some of the most dexterous and energizing puzzles I have ever encountered. (Saying that suddenly means quite a bit when you get to my age...) These puzzles are the most fun I've had in ages. Keep in mind, however, you've got to be sharp as a tack to get a few of these! These puzzles use an amazingly savvy approach at making us laugh at the very language we take for granted each day!
There is a very serious divide that runs between BEQ and the other young constructors of modern puzzles. His work is vibrant and cheeky; challenging and fun, but he does not, at any time, dissapoint by leaving out a few references to classic British literature, the Watergate scandal, or even the names of movie stars that died years before he was born.
Very challenging, very rewarding - some of the funniest ones I've seen in years. Shortz wins again with an excellent all-star, and an awesome collection of work.
Book Description
It's little wonder that longtime Windows users are migrating in droves to the new Mac. They're fed up with the virus-prone Windows way of life, and they're lured by Apple's well-deserved reputation for producing great all-around computers that are reliable, user-friendly, well designed, and now--with the $500 Mac mini--extremely affordable, too.
Whether you're drawn to the Mac's stability, its stunning digital media suite, or the fact that a whole computer can look and feel as slick as your iPod, you can quickly and easily become a Mac convert. But consider yourself warned: a Mac isn't just a Windows machine in a prettier box; it's a whole different animal and a whole new computing experience.
If you're contemplating--or have already made--the switch from a Windows PC to a Mac, you need Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Tiger Edition. This incomparable guide delivers what Apple doesn't: everything you need to know to successfully and painlessly move to a Mac.
The latest reprint of this book has been updated to reflect the new generation of Mac models that run on Intel chips. There's even a new appendix that guides you through the installation of Windows XP on your Macintosh (using adapter software like Boot Camp or Parallels), so that you have the best of all worlds: a single, beautiful machine that can run 100 percent of the world's desktop software. (Note to people who've already bought the book: This appendix is available as a free PDF download from missingmanuals.com.)
Missing Manual series creator and bestselling author David Pogue teams up with 17-year-old whiz kid and founder of GoldfishSoft (www.goldfishsoft.com) Adam Goldstein to cover every aspect of switching to a Mac--things like transferring email, files, and addresses from a PC to a Mac; getting acquainted with the Mac's interface; adapting to Mac versions of familiar programs (including Microsoft Office); setting up a network to share files with PCs and Macs; and using the printers, scanners, and other peripherals you already own.
Covering the latest in Mac OS X v.10.4 "Tiger," Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Tiger Edition explains the hundreds of innovative new features to the Mac OS and how you can understand and make the very most of each.
Whether you're a novice or a power user, Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Tiger Edition, teaches you how to smoothly and seamlessly replace (or supplement) your Windows machine--in a refreshingly funny and down-to-earth style--with a mighty Mac.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect companion.......2007-09-26
Until a few months ago, I would never have bought anything but a PC. For some reason, I decided to buy an iMac. I love it now. But this book made it possible. At first, I was confused and knew I had made a monumental mistake by not buying yet another trusty PC. Oh, yes, I looked back wistfully and yearned for the weekly (if not more frequent) updates to keep those pesky viruses, worms, maggots, whatever out of my computer. But then I found this book, and combined it with one other (MAC OS X, Tiger Edition) and discovered another dimension of computing. I love my iMac. I love these books. And if you are new to the Mac, they are invaluable!!! I even bought a set for my son in college, who also decided to surrender his idolatry of the PC and switch to a Mac Book. He feels the same! Easy to read. Easy to find what you need. Easy to follow directions!!! They're great!
Very Useful for New Intel Mac Switchers.......2007-09-21
This book will save you time in the transition from PC to Mac, now increasingly common as buyers are attracted to the new Intel Macs. You can probably figure out most of the operating system differences on your own, but the hints in this book justify the price.
The switch, by the way, is also worth it.
Switcher's manual.......2007-09-18
Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Tiger Edition
Great book!
It tells you all the things us poor PC users would take ages to learn.
The language is easy, fun and very, very clear, although sometimes it tends to err on the verbose side of life.
Good buy for the money
Not exactly What I Expected.......2007-09-09
I haven't read the entire manual. Due to some cerebral related problems, I have a very short attention span, and short term memory loss. So I was really hoping for some sort of clear cut index comparing Microsoft OS to Tiger OS. There was an index, but it wasn't wired that way. Other then that, It seems to be a comprehensive publication. Since the problem really sits with me, I guess I should have given it a better score.
Tedious........2007-08-23
I have seen so much hype about the Pogue "Missing Manual" books that I had to try this one having just switched to the mac after being a long time PC user. This book helped me in some ways but was tediously written. I don't like the author's writing style and some of the contents were irrelevant to me. I would try another book if one were available.. Writing a 500 page book on how to use a computer for a person already able to operate a PC seems like overkill to me. I read about half of it while awaiting being called for jury duty but by the second half had to skim it. It is more like a boring textbook than a primer and transition book. I wouldn't recommend it to the average reader making " the switch".
Book Description
Apple's "Switch" campaign, aimed at Windows PC users who've had it to here with the complexity, intrusiveness, viruses and hassle of life in Windows, is having tremendous success. Lured by Apple's gorgeous computers and Mac OS X, the new super-stable operating system, thousands of Windows refugees are making the leap to the simpler, cleaner lines of the Macintosh -- and then discovering that just buying a new Mac isn't quite all there is to it. Not only must they learn new ways of doing things, but they may find it a challenge to bring over their digital lives from the PC they leave behind (or leave on their desk as a second machine).
This concise, entertaining book from celebrated author and New York Times columnist David Pogue shows Mac converts how to make the move quickly and easily.
With refreshing humor and jargon-free prose, Pogue teaches novices and power users alike how to move their files, address book and email collection from a PC to the Mac; adapt to Mac versions of programs such as Microsoft Office, FileMaker, Photoshop, America Online and Quicken; find familiar controls in the new system; set up a network to share files with PCs and Macs; and adapt their old printers, scanners, and other peripherals. An important part of this book is Appendix B, the "Where'd It Go?" Dictionary, which includes an alphabetical listing of every familiar Windows feature, and where readers can find its equivalent in Mac OS X.
If you're ready to switch, this is your guide.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for novices on Mac world.......2007-09-24
The author explains himself clearly and cleverly. Easy to follow when instructions are explained and pleasant to read. Clever and smart at full!
REally comes in handy.......2007-08-14
This has saved my benzaga a few times as I am getting used to the Mac, a G4 PowerMac, while still using my PC. Of course, now the next version of OS X is coming out fall of 2007, so something else to learn Bought iLife06 for iMovie...actually, I bought the Mac specifically to use iMovie. Heard iLife 08 will be even better, video wise.
What I still don't like about the Mac is it's "here let me organize that for you" file system. No, I want the good old d:\ folder system of the PC. I know Mac has that too, in its own way, but the way a Mac wants to suck in all the photos, for instance, automatically, instead of me choosing the two or three I want to work with. It's like too much of a good thing.
Anyway, this has not much to do with Pogue's book(s). He's written so many that it's easy to link one to the other once you get going in computers.
The book that really should have been in the box.......2007-03-11
I recently bought a Mac after years of using a PC and I loved it, but had no idea how to use/activate some of the features i had heard so much about (tabbed browsing, anyone?). And then I found this book...
I'm a fairly casual computer user - main uses are Internet, digital photos and word processing, though i have needed to pull together a presentation or two. This book has been invaluable, but because it is tailored for the PC user who has recently switched over, none of the chapters go into much detail.
Don't get me wrong, there's still a lot of very useful information here, but unless you're like me, I think that The Missing Manual's OS X Tiger Edition (not this "Switching to the Mac" edition) may be better for you.
Here are the chapter headings so you can decide for yourself
~ How the Mac is Different
~ Windows and Icons
~ The Dock, Desktop, Toolbar and Sidebar
~ Programs and Documents
~ Five Ways to Transfer Your Files
~ Transferring Email and Contacts
~ Special Software, Special Problems
~ Hardware on the Mac
~ Getting Online
~ Mail and Address Book
~ Safari, iChat and Sherlock
~ System Preferences
~ The Freebie Programs
~ Installation and Trouble Shooting
Even if you choose not to purchase this edition, I would definitely recommend purchasing a Missing Manual. They are extremely user-friendly and understandable, which is not always the case with computer literature. They also have great support on their website with lists of shareware programs mentioned in the book.
The cover calls it "the book that should have been in the box" and that's not an exaggeration.
Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual.......2007-01-26
This is an exceptionally good book. After I read and studied this book, I felt quite confident I can flee the Windows quagmire with a minimum of pain and sorrow.
I just ordered my IMac and I can't wait to get going.
Thanks to David and company for this fine book.
Note to APPLE, you really should have this book on your web-site and / or ship this thing with Macs.
