Book Description
On November 18th of alternate years Mr Earbrass begins writing 'his new novel.' Weeks ago he chose its title at random from a list of them he keeps in a little green note-book. It being tea-time of the 17th, he is alarmed not to have thought of a plot to which The Unstrung Harp might apply, but his mind will keep reverting to the last biscuit on the plate." So begins what the Times Literary Supplement called "a small masterpiece." TUH is a look at the literary life and its "attendant woes: isolation, writer's block, professional jealousy, and plain boredom." But, as with all of Edward Gorey's books, TUH is also about life in general, with its anguish, turnips, conjunctions, illness, defeat, string, parties, no parties, urns, desuetude, disaffection, claws, loss, trebizond, napkins, shame, stones, distance, fever, antipodes, mush, glaciers, incoherence, labels, miasma, amputation, tides, deceit, mourning, elsewards. You get the point. Finally, TUH is about Edward Gorey the writer, about Edward Gorey writing The Unstrung Harp. It's a cracked mirror of a book, and it's dedicated to RDP or Real Dear Person.
Customer Reviews:
Gorey's first novel is a little different from later efforts, but very funny.......2005-10-25
THE UNSTRUNG HARP was Edward Gorey's first novel, published in 1953. Although full of the droll humour that makes all of his efforts true pleasures to read, it is a little different from later, typical Gorey. There is more text with each illustration, and the characters involved are not as realistic as later, although these illustrations are still pen and ink drawings set in Edwardian times.
The story concerns C. F. Earbrass, the "well-known novelist". Earbrass is at work on a new book, and each picture shows a stage. Gorey's book is a wonderful and insightful commentary on the process of literary creation, and I will quote from one page:
"The first draft of TUH is more than half finished, and for some weeks its characters have been assuming a fitful and cloudy reality. Now, a minor one named Glassglue has materialized at the head of the stairs as his creator is about to go down to dinner. Mr Earbrass was aware of the peculiarly unpleasant nubs on his greatcoat, but not the blue-tinted spectacles. Glassglue is about to mutter something in a tone too low to be caught and, stepping sideways, vanish."
If you could only see the illustration accompanying this you would get the book immediately. THE UNSTRUNG HARP is a very funny book and is worth seeking out by all Gorey fans, although THE OTHER STATUE might make a better introduction.
Fantods and epergnes.......2002-06-26
Fantods and epergnes do exist - at least they're in the dictionary. One is under glass in this book. It's impossible to review this wonderful book without quoting from it. Roughly speaking it's a short book about a strange-looking man writing a novel but that doesn't tell you much about it. We know he's strange-looking because of the illustrations. These are indescribable.
Come to think of it I might as well give up attempting to describe or review.
You can still get this book legally at Amazon.com so hurry up. For some reason Goreys often go out of print and then you have to resort to begging, which would be bad for your self-esteem, or stealing, which could get you you in more trouble. The unthinkable thing would be not to own this book.
How to Write a Novel.......2001-07-15
A brilliant tale of how best to go about writing the all-American novel. Or British. Whatever. I carry this book close to my heart, as do all serious authors.
No cliches - just bizarre, uppity humor.......2001-03-21
"Mr Earbrass belongs to the straying, rather than the sedentary, type of author. He is never to be found at his desk unless actually writing down a sentence. Before this happens he broods over it indefinately while picking up and putting down again small, loose objects...He frequently hums more in his mind than anywhere else, themes from the Poddington `Te Deum'."
Gorey is strange. Not weird strange. Just strange. His glib verbosity is a fantastic challenge. He takes the absurd and the stark into a play-acting of 1920s (I choose this era only because it is a feeling I get from his drawings) melodrama with a twist. I suppose his writing wouldn't have the same impact without his illustrations. His unblinking faces and penguin bodies are black comedy parodies of our over-rated catalogue of mannerisms and expressions. I laugh when I realize how serious Gorey is about taking his characters down a seriously mad path.
In the `Unstrung Harp', Mr Earbrass' boredom and inability to write are a bizarre focus. Gorey finds so much humor and psychology in our seemingly empty, drifting moments. Makes me realize that boredom really is a thing in itself to appreciate. Mr. Earbrass, after all, gets more from his "straying" than his actually writing, enjoying the "about to happen" rather than the "happening".
Start your collection. His books are tricky to come by, but even more difficult to part with.
the dark world of a writer.......2001-01-31
"In the blue horror of dawn the vines in the carpet appear likely to begin twining up his ankles." Although I haven't attempted to publish my books, as a writer I can understand some of Mr. Earbrass's tribulations while he experiences the realm of his own novel. Although it is a humorous story, for the most part I find "The Unstrung Harp" moving, passionate, and honest. Earbrass is a heroic solipsist descending into his own mind to survive, at the same time offering up what he finds there for public scrutiny. I wish I could read his famous Hipdeep Trilogy. (And don't forget that Gorey's illustrations are beautiful.)

Laugh While You Learn.......2003-11-04
Rod Fadem's memoir skillfully uses humor to deliver important lessons about OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). While the laughs make the book enormously readable, the poignant stories about Fadem's personal struggles make the book truly memorable. This insider's view of understanding and managing OCD is recommended reading for anyone dealing with being "different." Kudos to Fadem for a job well done and--more importantly--a life well lived.
A brilliant view of OCD.......2003-11-03
I really had never talked to or experienced someone with OCD, but this book really was an insight into the world of someone with a condition that can be both frustrating and sometimes paralyzing. With a humorist approach, the book takes a very serious subject and makes it funny and approachable. Mr. Fadem did a masterful job! Kudos!
Very interesting and lots of laughs.......2003-11-01
I found this book very interesting from the point of view of his disease and how he handled it. Being a Catholic, I also found the Jewish-ness of his family very informative, since I know a lot of Jews, but not intimately. It was a very sweet picture he painted of his parents and his youth. I laughed a lot and felt some strong emotions for him and his challenges.
A very good and easy read! I recommend it !
Kept me laughing!.......2003-10-31
I've never seen another book that promised to refund my money if I didn't laugh--and laugh I did!
Author Rod Fadem's humor is reminiscent of Woody Allen in his prime. Subtleties abound in this tongue-in-cheek memoir which follows the self-proclaimed "Shlepper" through his eventful life-from his actual conception, a "near miss" at his circumcision, strange events at his Bar Mitzvah, bizarre army events and promotion, to such diverse experiences as a stint on the comedy stage and several experiences in international travel (I fell off my chair laughing at his recounting of the overnight train ride and the fellow passenger who mistook his toupee for a rat!). And...I will never look at a pawn shop sign again in the same way after reading the description of his vacation at a nudist resort in France! Throughout the book, Mr. Fadem continues to poke fun at himself for his bumbling ways in dealing with his OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) He takes plenty of license in describing events but, I quickly learned to distinguish between the actual events and his fantasies-such as the funny description of how his name showed up in the Torah's "Bible Code" or the many times that his guardian angel "Shleppriel" came to his rescue. Mr. Fadem has written a memoir in a style that I wish more authors would follow--not just for the style of humor but for the ability to treat a serious subject such as OCD in a way that doesn't simply pander to the reader's heartstrings. I never felt uncomfortable or that my emotions were being coerced. Instead, I came away with a deep appreciation for Mr. Fadem's tremendous accomplishments in spite of his OCD. Whereas so many OCDers struggle with simply holding down a steady job, he has done that and more-from having a long-term marriage, raising children, writing a couple of books and most of all, never being afraid to experience life.
I would highly recommend the book
The book is hilarious!.......2003-10-30
In this inspirational autobiography, author Rod Fadem chronicles the trials and tribulations of going through life with OCD, and he does it with great humor. He overcomes this condition (or at least copes with it) through sheer determination, but not before experiencing a myriad of strange events which will keep you entertained from beginning to end. These include losing his hairpiece on a train, going to a nudist colony, and acting as a defense lawyer in the army. One of the side effects of having OCD is being disorganized, and one of the charms of his story is the situational humor which results from the consequences of being a shlepper--a person who a disorganized klutz. Read the book, you won't be sorry.

Customer Reviews:
From Eerdmans.......2005-12-21
This encyclopedia is a monumental reference work that addresses the broad interest in Christianity and religion around the world today. Comprehensive, up to date, reflecting the highest standards in scholarship yet intended for a wide range of readers, it describes the Christian faith and community in their myriad forms today and throughout the 2,000 years of Christian history. It also looks outward beyond Christianity, considering other world religions and philosophies as it paints the overall religious and socio-cultural picture in which the Christian church now finds itself in the new millennium. Written by leading scholars from many countries and cultural backgrounds, the more than 1,700 articles depict Christianity in its global context. Separate articles for every continent and for over 170 countries examine both the history and the current situation of the Christian faith worldwide. The book portrays Christianity in its widest ecumenical context. Major articles detail Christianity's rich spiritual and theological diversity in order to inform readers about religious traditions and perspectives beyond their own ecclesiastical frameworks. In its portrayal of Christianity, this encyclopedia also takes into account the current socio-cultural context, including other world religions, secular philosophies, cultural trends, and modern political and economic forces. Covering such current topics as abortion, atheism, Islam, modernity, and psychoanalysis, these articles describe the multifarious settings in which the Christian church today must maintain a credible witness to the ancient gospel. Finally, the encyclopedia presents Christianity in its rich historical context, starting with the biblical tradition and showing how the apostolic tradition developed and how the church has sought throughout history to keep faith with its traditions while engaging the world around it. Volume 4 contains 299 articles constituting the alphabetical entries P-Sh-articles on significant topics ranging from Paul, process theology, and the Qur'an to religious liberty, salvation history, and scholasticism. Like each volume in the complete encyclopedia, this book incorporates many enhancements of and additions to the third revised edition of the German Evangelisches Kirchenlexikon: Internationale theologische Enzyklopädie, on which this encyclopedia is based. Among the features of this English work are the following:
· articles on all but the smallest countries of the world, including former communist states that have gained their independence since 1989;
· the latest, best statistical information, compiled by David B. Barrett, on the religious affiliation and ecclesiastical breakdown of each country and continent;
· the addition of over seventy biographical articles on prominent figures throughout church history; and
· many expanded or entirely new articles that address topics of particular interest to English-speaking readers. Unparalleled in scholarship and breadth of content, the Encyclopedia of Christianity will long serve as the standard reference work for the study of Christianity in the past and the present-and its trajectory into the twenty-first century.
A geat reference tool for pastors and lay persons who pastor.......2004-09-22
Every pastor and every lay person actively involved in the pastoral care of others in the life of the church should have this book on their near shelf for easy reference. It is an excellent resource - I especially enjoyed the variety of articles, some long and some short. Wide ranging topics - from "psychodrama" to "alcoholism", from "spiritual direction" to "retirement", it seems that nothing is left out. All articles appear to be well researched from a variety of fields, giving the reader a sense of the deep reliability and relevance of this truly interdisciplinary project. Useful!!!
Not just for academics.......2000-12-29
I'm a parish pastor, and spending over a hundred dollars for one reference book better be worth it. It is. Volume One contains 465 articles (alphabetically from A-D). Topics of current interest include "Abortion" and "Abortion Counseling" and "Black Churches." Information on most of the world's countries and the latest statistics are at my fingertips. Although the encyclopedia is based upon a massive German publication, this edition is written in American English. In my opinion, many of the articles would be useful for high school students and Sunday School teachers. I'm going to put Vol. 2 on my next Christmas "wish" list.

Move over Rover, there's a new dog in town!.......2005-03-02
Just when I least expected it, a new book on Jigsaw Puzzles appears.I already had a good book on the subject,"The One,The Only,The Original Jigsaw Puzzle Book" by Francene and Louis Sabin,1977.It was and still is a very good book. While obviously, some of the same things are covered, there is still enough that ie different to make it worthwhile as a companion to this new jigsaw book.(see my review ).In just about every aspect, this book gives a lot more. There are 16 color pages showing about 50 collectible jigsaws;no way could black and white do them justice.History of jigsaws is covered from their inception in the mid-1700's and particulaly during the puzzle crazes of the 1920's.Also covered is how inovations took place over the years .There are details on construction and manufacture as well as complete instructions on various ways to make your own puzzles. We are also told of some of the famous people who indulge in puzzles;Bill Gates,Albert Einstein,Bing Crosby,Jean Harlow,George W. Bush,Stephen King, several US Presidents and even J.P.Morgan.Hard to believe all these people have something in common. We are also told of speed competitions to assemble puzzles as well as record size and complexity of puzzles.
I also found out about a puzzle I've had for some time and never got around to working on. Namely, one put out by Christopher Mockton,in 1998 called Eternity. He was the son of a Vicount and advisor to Prime Minister Thatcher. The puzzle consisted of 209 geometrically shaped pieces which had to be placed in a frame.Somewhat like a 209 piece Tangram. The buyer had 4 years to complete it for a Million Pound prize. To great astonishment, 2 Cambridge students spent 6 months on a computer program and successfully solved it.Mockton had to sell his ancestral home in Scotland to pay off the prize. It is a great collector's item, and I found in a 'Thrift Store'for a dollar, but somehow I doubt I'll ever solve it.
It kind of reminds me of Loyd's "Cyclopedia of Puzzles"This huge volume was hastily assembled by his son and privately published in 1914 and offered a large prize to the first person who submitted correct solutions to all the puzzles.Well, there were all kinds of errors, multiple solutions, impossible solutions and whatnot ,so that nobody won the prize.Dover Publishing and Martin Gardner put out a selection of these puzzles in 1959.
Sorry for the digression. The Jigsaw book gives us some names for various shaped pieces, such as, ,turtles, loops, sockets, knobs, holes, tabs, slots, keys, locks and suggests you find some of your own names.I like tongues, mouths, lefties, righties, uppers, downers, straights, curves, to name a few more.
Then to top it off, Williams gives hundreds of references, all the way from web sites, books, manufacturers, sellers, organizations and many, many references to articles in all sorts of publications.
It's hard to imagine this being anything but the definitive book on Jigsaw Puzzles for a long time. Then again;maybe another new dog will appear on the block;but it'll have to be good to top this one.
The History of a Favorite Pasttime.......2004-11-21
"On the face of it, a jigsaw puzzle is a ridiculous exercise in make-work and wasted time." This is the analysis of Anne D. Williams, and she ought to know. After all, she is in the opinion of puzzle-master Will Shortz "the world's foremost expert on jigsaw puzzles." She has built an academic career on jigsaws, and has one of the world's largest collections (around 8,000), and so can be counted to look at them as something more than ridiculous exercises. In _The Jigsaw Puzzle: Piecing Together a History_ (Berkley Books), she has assembled (ahem - the puns about puzzles, frequent in this work, are surprisingly numerous) an appealing collection of what must have been a pastime in almost everyone's life. The appeal of the subject is therefore universal, and its aspects are here told with humor and genuine delight. Though all of us have worked on jigsaws, much of the book has to do with those who work on manufacturing the puzzles and those obsessed with putting the puzzles together, or collecting them.
American children almost all have put together maps of the United States, with each state being a separate piece (well, the little ones in the northeast often blended). In doing so, they participate in the earliest form of the jigsaw. The "dissected map" was the original jigsaw, and mapmakers were the original jigsaw manufacturers. The precise date of origin or identity of the inventor are not known, but there were jigsaw maps by 1760, and the children of King George III played with them, and maybe learned some geography. They were expensive, and so are the handmade wooden ones that are still made, maybe at $6 a piece. Such puzzles often have pieces that look like letters our silhouettes of bird, clowns, or infinite others; this was an innovation of Parker Brothers in 1908, the time of the first puzzle fad. A further fad occurred around the depression, when puzzles were taken up again by a new generation who could no longer afford the theater, who had time on their hands, and who might get some small mental lift by being able to succeed in completing a puzzle. Luxury puzzles best exemplified currently by Stave Puzzles, now patronized by the likes of Queen Elizabeth, Barbara Bush, and Bill Gates. The owner, Steve Richardson, is known as the "Chief Tormentor," and takes seriously his role in making harder puzzles, like the one of only 150 pieces that could fit together a million wrong ways and one right way. He admits he went too far in an April Fool's Day puzzle for 1989 called "5 Easy Pieces". It had only five pieces, and it was easy to put four together; the last one always proved too big to fit in. Thirty buyers took the puzzle on, at $89, and he sent refunds to them all: the puzzle wasn't too hard, it was impossible.
There are computer programs now that take a photo and change it into pieces that can be shown on your monitor. You use the mouse to move and turn the pieces into the solution. Williams obviously values the older puzzles more, but admits that with a computer puzzle, one never risks losing a piece. There are computer programs used to solve puzzles, as the designer of the fiendish "Eternity" puzzle learned after he offered a prize of a million pounds to anyone who solved it within four years. Six months of full-time computing by two Cambridge mathematicians lost him his money and the ancestral mansion he had to sell. It is only one of the amazing stories here, in a well illustrated and funny book about a happy aspect of human ingenuity.

Customer Reviews:
How an action/adventure guide should look........2005-09-12
In this day and age, a guide as detailed as this is fairly hard to come by. Guides, recently have been lacking in the areas where they need the most strength. They need walkthroughs and basics with detailed screenshots and maps. Every now and then you really do get that decent strategy guide (like say... the BradyGAMES Kingdom Hearts Guide), but often you don't (like the Tales of Symphonia guide--see my review).
Thank goodness that across seas there is Piggyback Interactive. They don't release too many guides in America, but when they do you're glad to have 'em! Nothing but the best information straight from the pros, with crystal-clear high rez screenshots and some of the most alarmingly detailed maps you could find! For their Jak 3 guide, they've more than outdone themselves.
The guide opens up with a little talk about characters (and you'll see little blurbs pop up with Daxter "commenting" on these characters and whatnot), giving you some background information on them.
We then break into the near 30 page game basics section. There has never been a strategy guide that has been so useful and helpful in getting you acquainted with the game. From telling you the basic controls to getting you able to use the vast set of weapons in Jak 2. There are also advanced tips for advanced gamers, and that's one of the things that Piggyback is useful for. The expert AND the beginner will get a use out of this guide!
After the gamebasics you'll jump into the 100 page walkthrough! That's right, 100 pages of in-depth strategy, high rez screenshots and detailed maps. These maps aren't just handrawn maps either. They come STRAIGHT from the developers so you KNOW they're detailed! Beautifully rendered for your convenience and clearly marked with notes that will show you what to do. Think of how Nintendo Power writes their guides with the A B C. This guide is 1 2 3, and it works in divine ways. This makes the guide more organized several times over! No more reading the entire walkthrough just to find out what to do. And what's better? They actually tell you which screenshot you should look at! For example: If you can't understand what's in the text they'll have in nice little parenthasis (See Fig. 1). Now look at screenshot 1 and you'll know exactly what they're talking about! Never has a guide been so clear and concise.
The strategies detailed are not just from developers, but also from experts. If you've seen any other piggyback guide (which for most of you will have been Halo 2, unless you import) you know they love to play through an area hundreds of times until they find the best route possible! It is no different here, and they're willing to share those secrets with you! And if you think that's boss, check out those boss strategies. More than just two paragraphs, they take up the entire page and leave no stone unturned.
Following the walkthrough is an enemies list that will tell you all you need to know about them including how fast they are, how big and how many hit points they've got! Plus, insane secret beat down tactics!
Speaking of secrets... this guide is chalk full of them. With over 25 pages worth of secrets, what have you to lose? Want to find all the Precursor Orbs? You'll do it with this guide. How about all those nifty bonus challenges? Revealed! How about the precursor alphabet? It's in here too! Not one secret left out, and not stone left unturned!
Following all those secrets is the making of Jak 3. And not just the making of Jak 3, but the making of the entire Jak series starting with its cold roots back in the early days with "Jak and Daxter". You'll get so much info out of the developers themselves. Incredible!
And lastly is the index. Yes, there is an index, and trust me, you'll WANT this thing! How many times are you tired of searching through the guides enemy list or you can't remember where to find that secret? Well, instead of fishing through those sections skimming every page... why not just head to the index? If every strategy guide had an index, page flipping would be less of a hazard (and the paper cut ratio might go down, even!).
And if those maps are confusing, there is a fold-out legend so that you no longer will have to constantly flip to a legend. Just fold it out and set your guide down and you're all set to go!
So when is a strategy guide actually worth the outrageous price tag? When you actually get everything from it. Friends, this isn't just a strategy guide, it's an ENCYCLOPEDIA! Is this worth shelling out the money for? YES! Totally worth it!
So strap yourself into Jak 3 and use this as your navigation tool. No stone left unturned, no secret left out. Everything you need for Jak 3 is right here!
