    5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of a Disney graphic novel.......2006-08-03

The Disney studios astonish me. For years, they've turned out one bad movie after another, all the while literally sitting on storyboards for what could be some of the greatest animated films ever made -- first Don Rosa's The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, and now this masterpiece by Byron Erickson and Giorgio Cavazzano. Originally comissioned as a 12-issue serial by Disney's German publisher, last year Gemstone Comics presented it to English-reading audiences for the first time, and like Rosa's book, this is a Disney comic that far surpasses its contemporaries to tell a story worthy of the finest graphic novel libraries.

Huey, Dewey and Louie are on a picnic with their uncles Donald and Scrooge when a rift opens up in the fabric of reality. A human magician and warrior from another reality have escaped to Duckburg, with the dragon-riding creatures called the Morg hot on their tails. The ducks are pulled along to their homeworld and get embroiled in the fight by the human resistance to free themselves -- and their former friends, the dragons, from the despicable Morg.

This really is a true fantasy epic. The ducks are separated early and, caught up in a war, find themselves working sometimes at cross-purposes, sometimes together without realizing it. New characters are introduced -- friends and enemies both, and we see our heroes from every angle. The nephews are brave, Donald is determined, Scrooge is conniving -- all characterizations that perfectly match our heroes, and further the story.

Simply put, this long Disney adventure is one of the true masterpieces of the form. It's the sort of book parents can read with their children and both sit on the edge of their seats, and there's something seriously wrong with Disney for not pursuing the other avenues to tell this incredible story.

4 out of 5 stars A Door Opens... And Closes!.......2006-02-04

This is a long adventure serial starring Huey, Dewey & Louie, Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge. The ducks are transported to an alternate reality, where they help human beings battle against alien barbarians. It is well written, with great artwork. This is very different from other Disney comic books, but it's a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Nice long read for a rainy day.......2005-11-08

This book is a great adventure tale for all ages. I really enjoyed the story and the art is simply beautiful. If reading short duck stories leaves you crying "more!," then this is the book for you.

1 out of 5 stars This has to be one of the most careless adaptions, EVER........2007-08-03

Before this book there were multiple versions of the Stormbringer (BRP) system, changed somewhat and renamed 'Elric!' and then changed back to Stormbringer again.

This book is nothing but a cut & paste job by a company obviously not at all interested or informed on making a d20 product.

There's two types of customers who may look at this product:

If you really are into Elric and want a faithful adaption, avoid this product. (Except maybe at the $4.99 level.)

If you know nothing about Elric and just want some wild ideas that are interesting (but ultimately busted), this product might prove a measure of worth.

I am the former, and my rating reflects this.

I guess the best way to describe just how careless the conversion was is to show some "stats" on a few saga personalities:

    Dyvim Slorm (Level 8 Aristocrat/Level 7 Wizard)
(Um... didn't Slorm ride a dragon at the end and do pretty well with Mournblade? And when did he use magic?!? Didn't Melnibone fall when he was fairly young?)

    Magum Colim (Level 4 Expert (Sailor)/Level 6 Fighter/Level 6 Wizard)
(What's up with another arbitrary wizard?)

And the tin foil hat award goes to...

    Dyvim Tvar (Level 7 Fighter/Level 7 Wizard)
(So his son is an Aristocrat and he is not?!? And yet ANOTHER wizard. Grrr... anyone who has forgotten about Tvar's reaction to sorcery might want to read a few pages into "The Ship Which Sails Over Land and Sea" from "Elric of Melnibone" again. The terrible drawing of him and the gaggleload of "demon items" [he, and almost everyone has] only adds to all this.)

These are just the very basics. Seriously, do a google search outside of Amazon and you'll see what I mean.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre and rushed adaptation..........2002-01-18

I was very disappointed when this product came out.
Potentially it could have been the highlight of the early d20 system's open license, but the producers did a very 2nd rate job of putting together the materials.
The presentation was no better then a novice could've accomplished on a home pc. The artwork was old, the organisation was not updated at all for the new book and directly borrowed from prior products.
This setting is just waiting for someone who really cares to adapt it in a good light instead of rushing to make a quick buck.
I expected more from such a fine company as Chaosium.

5 out of 5 stars A complete role gaming adventure.......2001-06-09

Based upon the popular Michael Moorcock fantasy novels, Dragon Lords Of Melnibone offers the players a complete role gaming adventure in a dark world where the forces of law and chaos clash. Players are provided with a complete description of this mystical world of Young Kingdoms and such strange races as Melniboneans and the Myyrrhn; magic and religion; demons, monsters, folk and heroes; and a gaming system that is riveting from first to last. Of particular value is The Dungeon Masters Companion section including reference guides for campaigns, mass combats, effects of chaos, scenarios, allegiances, three forces, enchantments, rumors, a character sheet template, and user friendly index. Wonderfully illustrated throughout, Dragon Lords Of Melnibone is a very highly recommended addition to any dedicated role gamer's reference and player collection.

4 out of 5 stars I can only hope this is the beginning.......2001-04-27

For those that are NOT familiar with the idea, WOTC has offered an 'Open Game License' to any publisher that would like to contribute to the further growth of the d20 system that has been implemented with D&D3Ed.

Chaosium, the fine purveyors of Call of Cthulhu (for many many years) and the oft relaunched RPG versions of the Elric of Melnibone have thrown their hat in the d20 ring with this first offering.

DLoM is Elric d20... it's that simple. And the folks at Chaosium have not let us down. The package is tight, conscice and filled to the brim with vital info for running a d20 Young Kingdoms campaign.

All the main players atre faithfully presented, details for adapting Melnibonean and Pan-Tangean magic to the d20 formula and the surprising detail of summonings and pacts that were so vital to the Elric storyline all contibute to an amazing package.

If you love Elric, then this is the game for you... now... when do we get Hawkmoon and Corum?

    5 out of 5 stars Wow d20 Elric!.......2001-03-29

To be totally honest I have been waiting for this book for the last couple of months. Elric in the Dungeons and Dragons world brings back memories of playing as a kid with Deities & Demigods ( a book that I treasure to this day). Dragon Lords makes the Deit & Demi material look like a pamphlet. So much powerful source material. Stats for the dragons of Melnibone', Elric, & Stormbringer. New skills (conceal object), feats, (close-order fighting), races (full and half Melnibonean) and even new spells and weapons. The new alignment system seems very workable.

As with any new material, only thorough reading and hours of playing will show which aspects of the book will be inserted into your D&D world. This book is a great start to what will hopefully be a long line of d20 Melnibonean products.

Buy the book, then go reread Sailor on the Sea of Fate to get you ready for the world of Law and Chaos.

                5 out of 5 stars Perelman a masterwordsmith .......2005-01-19

A man who made so many people laugh in his day is almost forgotten today. For those for whom games with words are the stuff of life he is an incomparible master of the incorrigibly long and complicated regurgitation of delicious delicatessanlike drivel . All who read him come away wondering whether their heads are screwed on right or have been swimming in a washing machine and are infinitely damaged. Perelman does stuff that no one else does. Of course he should be in print, and of course read far more than he is today even though I might say I have laughed at his work sometimes without having a clue as to whether I really understand it.

5 out of 5 stars This is the place to start.......2000-10-27

To become a devout fan and follower of S.J. Perelman all you have to do is read any one of the stories in this compilation. Scratch that, all you need to do is read the title of one of the stories in this compilation. They all attest to how much Mr. Perelman loved words and how obsessed he was with turning a pretty phrase on its heels and knocking it off its feet.

If you can't find this book, then find this book anyway. If you still can't find this book, then find some of his other books. If you are having a hard time and can't find any of his other books, then go watch "Horse Feathers" or "Monkey Business" by the Marx Brothers. Then start your letter-writing campaign to Simon & Schuster inquiring as to why they haven't re-released more of S.J. Perelman's writing. Do yourself (and the world) a favor, get started today.

5 out of 5 stars even better than Roger Ebert.......2000-01-24

I too find it deplorable that this is out of print. Besides many well-chosen words (who besides Perelman and the late Robertson Davies uses "tohubohu," a word from the Hebrew Bible that sounds exactly like what it means?), this book has several movie reviews that made me amoeboid with laughter. "The Wickedest Woman in Larchmont"--a review of the movied that gave the world the phrase "Kiss me, my fool"--is itself worth the price of the entire volume (to use a cliche, which Perelman would never do except to make it hilarious).

("Tohubohu," by the way, is a ruckus; it's in Genesis, where the newly created earth is described as formless and void.)

How can a book that contains the most crafted writing in the English language be out of print?

5 out of 5 stars the best humor collection ever written in English.......1999-01-16

Most humorous writing isn't funny when it comes out, let alone years later. The majority of the New Yorker's Algonquin Round Table -- people like Robert Benchley and Dorothy Parker -- simply aren't that amusing when you read them today. Perelman is different -- read him and you'll understand where the best modern humor comes from (Woody Allen is unthinkable without Perelman). Read him and you'll also connect with the greatest writers of the past (T.S. Eliot was a great Perelman fan). Check out the brilliant parody of "Fairwell, My Lovely" (Perelman was a friend of Dashiell Hammett) and the definitive travelogue Westward, Ha! Happy reading!

                Book Description

This book includes many of the greatest hits from 1930 to 1958--available only in this edition--by the devastatingly witty Perelman, the leading figure of The New Yorker magazine's golden age of humor and one of the most popular American humorists ever. In these hilarious pieces, the charmingly cranky Perelman turns his scathing attention to books, movies, New York socialites, the newspaper business, country life, travel, Hollywood, the publishing industry, and, last but not least, himself. His self-portrait: "Under a forehead roughly comparable to . . . Piltdown Man are visible a pair of tiny pig eyes, lit up alternately by greed and concupiscence. . . . Before they made S. J. Perelman, they broke the mold." Sophisticated and supremely mischievous, Perelman is an acrobat of language who turns a phrase and then, before the reader has time to finish admiring his agility, turns it again.

5 out of 5 stars Another Perelman fan chimes in One big foible of fun .......2006-10-17

I was pretty resistant to the charms of Perelman's prose in my early years, as I usually looked for writers who could give some hint as to life 's deeper meanings. Perelman I find at an age when I am perhaps a bit tired of finding deeper meanings, provides the kind of sheer amusement and escape that few other writers can. His vocabulary is extraordinary and delightful, and his sentences complicated artistic constructions which always seem to arrive at unpredictable and at times hilarious places.
This is a writer who simply delights in making all of mankind seem as if we are one big foible of fun.

                5 out of 5 stars Spiritually Uplifting.......2006-01-25

This book has kept my spirits up over some very tough times. Each short essay is a gem of understated humor. Perelman's gift for making up names that make you laugh out loud -- especially if you know Yiddish -- is unparalleled.

This is a book to savor. Even the introduction and interstitial writing by the editor, Steve Martin, are hilarious.

Perelman is also an erudite humorist, throwing about deadly accurate references to the classics of American and European literature with abandon.

If it was worth lampooning between 1930 and 1958, Perelman lampoons it. The results have not aged badly.

                Thanks, SJ, wherever you are.

Perelman isn't just a brilliant humor writer, he's a brilliant writer. I can't think of another wordsmith, except for Shakespeare, who has a better knack for finding the right word for the right occasion. Half the time, I don't get his esoteric references to New York social life of the 30s and 40s and 50s, but he manages to write his pieces in such a way that I still find it humorous. He is such a gifted writer that he could make a seminar on Social Security funnier than any sketch on Saturday Night Live. It's too bad contemporary Americans no longer appreciate the sort of wordplay, non-sequiturs, and witticisms that define Perelman's writing. At the same time, his work, except when he's writing about obscure New York City social life, still feels fresh and relevant.

Woody Allen said that reading Perelman was detrimental to a young writer because then your own work begins to mimic his. I don't see this as such a bad thing. If only more "humorists" were as funny as Perelman, there might really be a reason to watch sitcoms and spend money to see "comedies."

Most of the Most of S.J. Perelman (part of the Humor and Wit series of Modern Library) is a lengthy, though abridged, volume of the Perelman pieces from 1930 - 1958, many of which originally appeared in the New Yorker, among other magazines. This book should not necessarily be read straight through, as I did to my slight regret, as it can become a little overwhelming. There is some dating in the material but it is more of a delight how little effect time has taken on the comedy. The best pieces are, without a doubt, the marvelous Cloudland Revisited sequences where the author looks at books and movies he admired in his youth to see what horrible things time, experience and maturity have done to them. These selections are the treasures of the volume. A fine look at the almost lost art of a certain form of humour writing at its height. A wonderful volume to be savoured slowly.

I agree that it should be a capital crime to butcher Perelman's published works, but since I can't find an unabridged copy of "The Most of S. J. Perelman", this book does well enough. As the only thing removed was "Acres and Pains", and that CAN be purchased separately, I would strongly recommend this book.

A leading German critic from the generation of Europeans scarred by the First World War, Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) had a writing career marked by deep philosophical insights and tumultuous emotional crises. But until recently, most of his work was unavailable in English; the handful of essays that could be read in English, like "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction," were undisputed classics, but the full spectrum of Benjamin's thought remained untapped. That has changed with Harvard University's publication of the multivolume Selected Writings. This second volume covers Benjamin's work from 1927 to 1934, the period in which he established himself as a leading public intellectual, and encompasses a wide variety of literary forms addressing an even wider variety of subject matter. From interviews with André Gide to film reviews of work by Chaplin and Eisenstein, from the autobiographical recollections of "A Berlin Chronicle" to his reflections on the cultural nostalgia for children's literature and toys, Benjamin wrote with perception and unflagging inquisitiveness. The editors have provided a chronological essay, which helps place the assembled writings in the context of Benjamin's life; the collection considered as a whole will undoubtedly be of vital importance to any scholar of modern European philosophy.

                                  Book Description

In the frenzied final years of the Weimar Republic, amid economic collapse and mourning political catastrophe, Walter Benjamin emerged as the most original practicing literary critic and public intellectual in the German-speaking world. Volume 2 of Selected Writings, covering the years 1927 to 1934, displays the full spectrum of Benjamin's achievements at this pivotal stage in his career.

Previously concerned chiefly with literary theory, Benjamin during these Years does pioneering work in new areas, from the stud of popular Culture (a discipline he virtually created) to theories of the media and the visual arts. His writings on the theory of modernity-most of them new to readers of English--develop ideas as important to an understanding of the twentieth century as an contained in his widely anthologiied essay "The Work of Art in the Age of Technological Reproducibility.

This volume brings together previously untranslated writings on major figures such as Brecht, Valéry and Gide, and on subjects ranging from film, radio, and the novel to memory, kitsch, and the theory of language. We find the manifoldly inquisitive Benjamin musing on the new modes of perception opened tip by techniques of photographic enlargement and cinematic montage, on the life and work of & Goethe at Weimar, on the fascination of old toys and the mysteries of food, and on the allegorical significance of Mickey Mouse.

Harvard is doing non-German speakers a great service by compiling all of these essential essays in chronological order. I am baffled, however, that some of the translations are so inaccurate. Non-German readers should know that there are egregious errors in some of these translations, especially those by Rodney Livingstone. I have compared one of his translations closely with the original German and was shocked to find so many inaccuracies. In one sentence Livingstone translates into English the *exact* opposite of what Benjamin actually writes. He doesn't just get the wrong word (as he does elsewhere); he composes a sentence that is the precise negation of what Benjamin wrote. This is very worrisome and does not bode well for the rest of the volume. I have not closely compared the majority of the volume to the original-- I don't have the time for that. But from the little evidence I found in just a few hours it looks bad indeed.

An excellent book, finally Banjamin on photography and cinema is available in english. Reading his essay on Chaplin is extremely illuminating concerning the question of the passage from silent film to sound film. His concept of critique, as well as his concept of "making history" lies in this text.

With his first book, Flash Web Design, Hillman Curtis quickly earned Flash guru status, and deservedly so. Like the coolest mentor one could ever hope to find, he struck a chord with his audience by sharing not just the nuts and bolts behind his Flash creations, but his ideas on good design methodology.

MTIV expands on that. Here he shares his respect and excitement for new media, gives a blueprint for design challenges of all types, taps into the myriad visual and literary inspirations that fuel his imagination, and shows readers how to get past their own moments of "designer's block."

Curtis is a fine storyteller. He takes anecdotes of coffee breaks, book tour lectures, work, life, and art, and weaves them around design maxims. For every morsel of advice, there are three or four personal stories that illustrate how he arrived at it and puts it to use. He shows how books, movies, print ads--just about anything--can be used in the search for creative solutions.

The seven steps in "Process" compose the bulk of the book. These are the exact steps Curtis's design team applies to each project. Without giving too much away, they are Listen, Unite, Theme, Concept, Filter, Justify, and Eat the Audience. (Well, you'll just have to get the book to find out about that last one.)

In "Inspiration," we learn that Curtis draws from Hemingway, Mies van der Rohe, Sidney Lumet, David Mamet, Leonard Cohen, Mark Rothko, and Joseph Müller-Brockman, among others. And the book finishes with a bang in the third chapter, "Practice," a collection of helpful tips in typography, color theory, XML, grids, and much more, from experts like Joseph Lowery (author of the Dreamweaver Bible) and usability authority Steve Krug.

MTIV is not just an easy read, it's fun, warm, encouraging, and, yes, inspiring. A self-taught artist, Curtis has made MTIV the perfect Boy Scout manual for those who have stumbled on design as a new career or just languished through too many uninspired afternoons in front of the computer. --Angelynn Grant

                                    Book Description

MTIV (Making the Invisible Visible) is an indispensable guide for the new age of media design. This book is about HOW to achieve the results that bring in profits and make you a better designer. This beautifully written and designed book unveils the methods behind Hillman Curtis' phenomenal success as a new media designer. In well-crafted narrative and instructional form, Hillman outlines his systematic approach for working with clients to develop clear, cogent, and creative communication - three "musts" for successful design.

Through trial and error, Hillman and his company honed a seven-step process for creating concepts, and developing and designing new media. Often overlooked or unknown by designers, the methods in this book are distilled from years of experience and enhanced by Hillman's years as a leader in the design field. Divided into three parts - "Process," "Inspiration," and "Practice" - the book offers a practical methodology for successful artistic and professional work and also offers technical advice for translating this to the web (color, XML, streaming media, and other topics are discussed). Written with a subtle sense of humor and narration that really flows, this book is a joy to read, with great advice that helps designers with their own design work.

                                    4 out of 5 stars reinvigorated!.......2007-03-21

I bought this, flipped through it a couple of times, then tossed it aside. A few years later, I decided to look through it again. This time, after about 15 pages in, I started to get inspired. I was concurrently redesigning my website, and it spoke to that process and, and also of collaboration. This book may reinvigorate your motivation and inspiration for new media design.

I'm just starting to learn about design, reading online and checking some books at the library of my college. This book is a great help because it does tell you the key fact that all ideas are there, borrowing is ok to transform something into a new well crafted thing, and you can find inspiration in many, many ways. Many useful information, tips, quotes, in general, I'm gonna buy this book for my collection.
