Now being released in Japan as a full anime series.......2003-11-13
Sense I first saw the 2 short films Mermaid Forest and Mermaid's Scar about 5-6 years ago I have been entranced by this captivating tale of 2 immortals who have eaten the flesh of a mermaid, of them keeping their humanity and trying to become completely human again. While watching then reading and now all anew watching again (will explain next paragraph) my love for this specific series has grown and grown. Some say it's bloody, yes it is but not in the oh God I think I'm going to be sick way.
To get a true hold on things I would recommend watching the movies Mermaid Forest and Mermaid's Scar first and if they interest you read the three Manga volumes. That's what I did and I have found that many people think the Manga is boring which it is not, its just a little slow at first and confusing (only a little though). And those people have not gotten into "Mermaid Saga" I think because of that. Its so worth diving into though. And now with the Anime Series entitled Mermaid Forest, which encompasses all of the Manga volumes, being released in Japan I think more and more people will see how truly stand alone this short series is from any of Rumiko Takahashi's other work (Inu Yasha, Ranma, and many others), and any other Manga series I have ever come across.
You can download the Mermaid Forest Series fansubbed (subtitled by fans for fans) on IRC or Bittorrent. Search Yahoo: Mermaid Forest Bittorrent (will give you link to IRC channels that you can download at as well). Once it is licensed for US release it will not be available on Bittorrent any longer.

Takahashi's "hobby".......2003-04-13
The first three of the nine stories that has become known as Rumiko Takahashi's Mermaid Saga. Written over the course of about twelve years, while still working on her major series (Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, and Ranma 1/2), this is Rumiko at her darkest--only her short story, Laughing Target, is as intensely frightening. While some of the later stories (especially the very last two) were more about the surrounding characters and are more plotted, these first three are all about Yuta and Mana, even while other characters plot and scheme around them. Even though these are horror stories, in the more literary sense of the word, there is also a great amount of comedy. My favorite--the first, "A Mermaid Never Smiles"--is practically a Swift-esque satire on the strive for beauty at any cost, and it sort of disappointed me that these themes weren't hit on more throughout the series. The best parts of the series, the thing everybody has come to wait for, are the little sections at the end of each story, when Yuta and (usually) Mana leave for the next town and talk to each other. Sometimes they moralize, sometimes they talk about how they feel, but it's always poignant.
Really Good.......2002-04-07
This is the first manga I ever read and it's still one of my favorites. People familiar with Takahashi's work will find her trademark humor and romance only not to the usual extremes. The story is a bit dark and very gory. It's like INU YASHA in the aspect there are bloody fights and cool demonic looking foes.
The story is about a legend that if you eat the flesh of a mermaid you gain long life and youth (assuming you're young when you eat it). The sad thing is that most people learn the hard way that not everyone who eats the flesh gets like this. Only one in a thousand people have bodies strong enough to take the effects of this poisonous flesh. Those that can't either die right away or become "lost souls", terrible fish like creatures that have lost their souls and wander the Earth forever, mindlessly killing and whatnot. And some people get in betweeners.
The beginning introduces one such guy that ate the flesh and did gain immortality. He meets a girl who has recently suffered the same fate and they journey together to see where their endless lives will take them. Oh and you'll never look at mermaids the same way after this book. I dont think they have ever been depicted as grotesquely as they are in this short but sweet series.

Extremely Good!.......2002-03-02
This is really an amazing peice of work. The characters become real people with real faults and real hearts, and the stories--macabre, yet insightful towards human nature--are ones that will keep you thinking well into the future. It is made up of three stories-A Mermaid Never Smiles, Village of the Fighting Fish, and Mermaid Forest--and all revolve around Yuta, a man who appears to be 20 years old, but is really 500. Long ago, he ate the Flesh of a Mermaid, and now he is cursed with Immortality. Wandering, alone, for hundreds of years, he seeks the cure--but all he knows is he must find a Mermaid. Each story is about his quest, spanning hundreds of years, beginning in 1509 in Ancient Japan. Takahashi does her best work here--beleive me. If you are a devout Ranma addict, look out--one look at this, and you'll never be able to go back.

Speaker's Resource.......2003-05-10
As a trainer and coach, I feel this book is a good guide for any occasion - however, it is to be used in a light-hearted vein. It actually brightened my day.
It can prepare you when someone is about to pass a witty remark - and you can give an equally witty rejoinder!
However, I feel that its greatest strength is to give speakers a good starting point to develop their own brand of witty humour.
Go on - buy the book.
A Book on How to Lose Friends and Deflate People.......2001-01-27
There are hardly any toasts in the book. How many times have you been involved in a roast compared to a toast or impromptu compliment. The title of the book is totally misleading. It should be "One Liners in Search of Their Once in a Lifetime Moment." The only persons that should buy this book is that rare individual that is involved in roasts or that even rarer person that has far too many friends. Use the one liners in this book and your friends are sure to disappear. Or you run with a really strange crowd. I know a couple of strange people that I could give the book to, but should I encourage them.
very snappy.......2000-03-27
I've read a few other toasting books because I am so in love with the art of toasting. This one not only has guidelines for coming up with your own, but also has some very nice historical and traditional toasts. The chapters on being witty are very fun to read as well.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2004-07-29
The experts say that CC (correspondence chess) is quite different from OTB (over the board) chess. I would go further and say that "books written by CC players are quite different from books written by OTB players".
Mr. Jon Edwards book is a good example on how deep a CC player can analyse a game. The chapters on the French Defense are instructive even for those that don't play it in either side of the board. His views on the hedgehog structure are also something not be missed.
I play CC and OTB chess and I'm sure this book is going to help me in both cases. A book that deserves to be read and consulted many times by the improving players.
A modern Classic.......2003-02-05
I had to respond to the last reviewer, who doesn't get it. This is, in my opinion, one of the top 20 chess books of the past decade. I know, who's this Edwards guy. Just someone who has devoted himself to the game and who knows how to write.
This is a wonderful read, with great annotations in the genre of the great chess books: Zurich 1953 and Tal-Botvinnik, 1960. The last reviewer said that Edwards is smug. What comes through here is someone who actually UNDERSTANDs the game well enough to communicate clearly. That's VERY rare in chess and makes this an important book to own and read.
Finally, the last chapter, Uncle Fred's Gambit, is the funniest thing I have ever read in or out of chess.
An Affable Analyst.......2000-04-24
Correspondence players should know to buy this book, its all other players that need to be told - this is a great book. If you think correspondence players play glacial, grueling games of chess - think again. Edwards plays the Benko Gambit, the Alekhine-Chatard Attack, and a Knight sacrifice against the Najdorf as early as move eight! The game Edwards - Hayward features thirteen sacrifices and was chosen as the APCT's 1993 Game of the Year by GM Arthur Bisguier. Had the combatant's been Kasparov - Anand, instead of Edwards - Hayward, it would have been celebrated worldwide as the game of the millenium. Rather than be a little known game where the author asks to "take ten minutes and give it a run through" as it "took two and a half years to produce." If you think correspondence players only follow book lines - think again. Edwards is "out of book" sometimes as early as move five and often battling opponents who are specialists in their particular variation who "have studied and codified their systems." There are games aplenty that exemplify this. Edwards has won numerous APCT tournaments, has twice won the APCT Game of the Year award, and is the 10th United States Correspondence Chess Champion. All the games from the championship are given with brief introductions but no annotations. He comes across as an affable fellow whom you wouldn't want to meet on the wrong side of a theoretical novelty. His joviality is evident in his style of writing, in the humorous story "Uncle Fred's Gambit," and in some of the chapter titles, such as: "Don't Feed the Pelikan", "Splits Can Hurt", and "Card-iac Arrests." His ferocity is evident when you play through the games. The Chess Analyst is an appropriate title as Edwards; likely due to the time spent on each position, has a knack for explaining positions in the utmost detail. Often speaking in terms of general concepts, weak squares, or with just plain hard analysis. He gets to the heart of the position. It's all here. Including supplementary games and input from guest annotators - such as GM Bisguier, along with analysis from his opponents - somewhat in the style of Gerzadowicz' Duelin' Notes. There is an index of openings and opponents. The interior artwork prefacing each chapter is attractive and adds to the caliber of the book.

Customer Reviews:
great animation book.......2004-11-07
The book has all the things i need to know for a beginner.I find this book easy to read, very helpful with lot's of illustrations/examples and the computer models are useful to practice the animation after reading it.
One of the best books on animation I've ever read!.......2004-11-06
I've bought a lot of books on 3D animation over the years and most of them are either full of information that I don't need (how to build sky scrapers or how to spin my name in letters) or don't have anywhere near enough information on how to animate (usually only one chapter).
This book has everything I need to learn how to animate!
It starts by showing how to do an exercise using 2D traditional skills and then goes on to do the same exercise in 3D (if you want to skip the 2D bit and just do the 3D, that seems to work fine). Most employers today want to see evidence of traditional animation training and this book gives you all that!
It covers everything; weight and balance, timing, walks, birds, fish, snakes, four legged animals, acting and lip-synch.
I'd rate this book with Richard Williams' The Animator's Survival kit. In other words one of those books that every animator should have.
So if you want to learn how to animate or if you want to improve your 3D skills, buy this book!
