Great Reminders of Why Cats Make Great Kids.......2004-01-22

For those of us who choose to have kids with four legs and a tail, this is the perfect book. You'll never have a cat asking for piercings, never have to change diapers, they LOVE liver and litter training is a breeze. Sure, some people will never understand the bond between cats and humans but I know I'm their mama and they're my kids.

My 2 persian cats are my children so I could totally relate. This book would be a fun read for any cat lover, whether they have children or not. Also, I found the illustrations very enjoyable.

i loooove love love this series, and i can't wait to read the last volume. the art is gorgeous, full-color, and alternately really poignant and really hilarious. the plot lines are simple, but still totally intriguing. i'm just as into houndu's story as catsby's, and it's rare that i find side plots to be as important as the "main" plot. read these books, you'll definitely fall in love with the characters.

The first book is a little depressing. Catsby is a sad, and pissed character, it is a great book. A lot of the situations are real life, and easy to relate to.

Having collected comics from a young age, I've always had a penchant for the pictured-books. Coming recommended, I perused "the Great Catsby" (vol 1) and found it to be very entertaining and a good read. The pictures are lively and the dialogue was witty, humorous, exactly to my taste. I see that comics don't just pertain to superheroes, but that there are genuine stories, true experiences that can be shared through this appropriate vehicle. The book itself was tastefully designed, and I am looking forward to the upcoming volumes.

This book has changed how I view graphic novels.
There's no reason why this couldn't be a classic like The Great Gatsby. The only thing? It's even better.
Anyone who has tasted "love" and "angst" will not be able to let this book go. A must read. Beautifully written, sharp and poetic and funny. It's got everything a book should have.

I love it. It couldn't get better than this. 9 different 'faces' about love, each different in time, location, and form of love. Amazing artwork, it blew me away. I had literally cried in some parts, each love or hurt was so distinct, it brought raw emotions out. Recommend it to everyone. Possibly the best in the series.

Well over a hundred funny cat cartoons are included in this well made volume. They are in black and white, and one page each. My daughter, and I also, thought they were very humorous, and the price is right. I understand it is out of print at this time, but used copies may be available.

Timeless pearls from a timeless man.......2000-04-26

What is there to say....but if you are a person who has read anything and everything by Mark Twain then it can't hurt to have this. It is a fun little collection of witty and intelligent observations from what I consider to be one of the greatest writers to have graced print. For those who are only familiar with something like Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn, I would still recommend this - it is but an all too brief introduction to Twain the genius who in some respects tackles far more of the world (particularly his political and religious views) than most serious authors. Most of his views are still relevant to the 21st century - this man was way ahead of his time! This little gem serves as both an introduction and a reminder of how timeless his views are. The unfortunate aspect is that just by continuing to show us how relevant his criticsm of religion and racism was and is, we are reminded that this is because sadly our society has not changed much in 150 years or so.

Get this book! - then get everything else by this man (not all bookstores like to keep these for too long)! . It sure beats a lot of the other "Little Books of Wisdom" that are out there!

THIS BOOK SUCKED. the first ten pages were worth reading the rest of the book is not. The other two reviews hit the nail on the head. he repeats himself over and over after the first couple chapters and tells nothing more than the dates of his movies and divorces.DO NOT BUY!!

A Pop-Biography........2003-10-14

I'm not quite sure what Sanello was thinking, but his biography, SPIELBERG is the biography equivalent of a one-hit-wonder. The most significant part of the book is the first few chapters that deal with Spielberg's early life. I learned some things I didn't know before. However, I guess after Sanello finished talking with a few old friends and family, he figured that was all the real research he needed to do because the rest of the biography reads like an extended version of PEOPLE magazine. There are no juicy tidbits and no in-depth research or even assumptions about how Spielberg is able to do what he does. The few times that Sanello discusses skirmishes that Spielberg had with former cast members, a short ancedote is given about their careers after the film and that is about all. Not only that, but several times throughout the book, Sanello quotes himself verbatim from previous chapters; sounding more like a freshman college student taking Lit 101 than the famed biographer he is supposed to be. Overall, SPIELBERG was a major let down. It's worth reading for the first couple chapters about Spielberg's early days, but the rest of the novel you can read yourself in the trades, newspapers, and magazines.

Superficial and disappointing.......2000-07-10

Unlike weightier bigraphies like Kevin Brownlow's terrific "David Lean" or Simon Callow's 'Orson Welles-The road to Xanadu," this book feels like author Sanello didn't look much further than magazine articles and trade clips for research. According to the dust cover, he had over half a dozen interviews (7? that must have been exhausting!) with the director himself and a handful of stars (though never really truly substantiated), but it doesn't seem like he thought about interviewing parents, siblings, co-workers, crew members, etc. for any more details or elucidations about this icon of American pop culture. His obvious admiration and fawning over his subject distracts from any possible objectivity and also grows tiresome. The book offers a basic overview of the director's life and work but not much in terms of how he works, communicates, or thinks. For example, there's almost nothing about his relationship with pivotal Amblin producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. Didn't they ever argue, or disagree about anything? How were projects brought in to the company and what was Kennedy and Marshall's thoughts about their boss? There is also no insight from production designers or cinematographers or writers or producers he worked with. For more than just a cursory look at this director's career (up to 1995) look elsewhere.

I'm really fond of this book. I'm an advanced amateur photographer, and I use Photoshop as my "digital darkroom". This book has really opened the world of possibilities for me. If you know just a little about Photoshop, you can still do quite a lot, but it will all be trial-and-error, and you'll waste a lot of time. This book will actually save you time and show you how to do things fast.

I have re purchased this book having spilt a drink on my first copy. It is worth every penny. Super book going from very basic right through to very advanced techniques. It stays by my PC (not MAc!) all the time. Will continue to ud date this book as I up date Photoshop. As a teacher of photography and PS I always tell students that this is one of the books to own.

Yep! I call "Photoshop CS - Creative Studio" as another winner from Peachpit Press! Although a strong basic working knowledge of Photoshop is required to make the best use of this book, even a novice would benefit from the hundreds of time saving tips, shortcuts and appendices. The creative exercises are clear and concise. This is a real "nuts and bolts" sort of recipe book... no dry or unwanted "humor" to wade through, just a LOT of real INFORMATION! (This is NOT an instructional book for Photoshop, but a creative supplement). As an "intermediate level" user of Photoshop CS, I found this publication to be an extremely valuable creative resource.

One of the better recipe books for photoshop.......2004-01-19

There are many training books available for Photoshop, those for the new CS version are just arriving. Frankly, you'll need at least one, probably several. The in-the-box 'documentation' for Photoshop is pretty meager. Some of these books are step-by-step, hand holding instructions and some are more generous in why and how the steps are taken. This is one of the latter. Perhaps what's more important, the examples are selected very well for usefulness. Follow each one, and you'll have a very good repertoire of skills. This book uses extensive color illustrations and examples, something surprisingly missing from some PS books.

Also, this book in oriented to illustrators. You will learn now to create textures (wood, marble, chrome), shape overlays, masks and how to apply some of the artistic filters, but you will not find anything on photo retouching, sharpening, and enhancement. (This is actually a good thing; Scott Kelby has some good books in this area so you won't be duplicating anything in your library.)

Why not 5 stars? (4.5 is more appropriate) It would be very helpful to have access to some of the images used in the book; these are not downloadable and there is no CD with the book. Also, each of the 37 chapters starts with a really fine example of the author's work, but it is not the basis for the lesson that follows. Too bad... the examples are terrific!

There are a few 'bugs' in the book where the settings for some of the layer styles are missing. An errata list on the publisher's site would help.

Highly recommended!
