A superb and greatly appreciated giftbook choice.......2002-12-08
StockcarToons: Grins And Spins On The Winston Cup Circuit is a wry, lighthearted, and chuckle-inducing collection of cartoons drawn and captioned by Mike Smith about the good, the bad, and the ugly of car racing on the Winston Cup Circuit. The simply executed black-and-white 'toons completely capture the emotion and essence of the ironies in the sport, and how recent events such as a ban on cigarette advertising have affected it. StockcarToons would make a superb and greatly appreciated giftbook choice for any dedicated auto racing fan.
GREAT NASCAR HUMOR!!!.......2002-11-09
This book is a MUST HAVE for any NASCAR fan. It is hilarious! Mike Smith has a great sense of humor. Don't believe me? Check out his most recent "stockcartoons"...
You'll really like this book if you are an Anti-Jeff Gordon fan....although Mike Smith is nice to Gordon a few times.
Very funny stuff!!.......2002-09-13
If you love NASCAR like I do you will love this book of 'toons. The Dale Earnhardt 'toons are priceless!! Enjoy :)
A MUST for Nascar Fans!.......2001-11-28
The first thing I do every Friday is go to the website of the Las Vegas Sun and downloaded Mike Smith's latest cartoon on the previous NASCAR race! This book is a absolute must for the NASCAR Fan. Mike treats the reader with tongue in cheek humor and he handles the hard times in Nascar with comforting insight. His ability to draw our heroes is unparalleled! This is the perfect gift for any NASCAR Fan on your list. It will definitely be under my tree this Christmas....and I've probably seen them all!!!

"I believe the American television rerun is the path to personal peace." -- Dr. Will Miller
What did ten years of watching Scooby Doo do to your psyche? Are you psychologically sick if you liked Cindy better than Marcia on The Brady Bunch? What does Frasier tell you about your own dysfunctional family patterns?
Dr. Will Miller explains it all in this hilarious self-help guide to our teleconscious. Studies show that Miller's exciting new technique called Teletherapy can help you balance your inner Moe, Larry, and Curly, relax your inner Incredible Hulk; and explore other complex issues such as:
Denial -- Shindig or Rush Limbaugh: two decisive strategies!
Parenting -- today's Dennis the Menace, tommorow's Eddie Haskell, next year's America's Most Wanted!
The Oedipal Complex -- The Rifleman: Lucas McCain as Freudian nightmare!
The New Masculinity -- why is Ralph Kramden crying for help and displaying Intermittent Explosive Disorder?
Plus: in-depth analyses of your favorite TV shows reveal the hidden psychological themes that make us want to watch shows like: MTV's Beavis and Butt-head, I Love Lucy, The A-Team, The Andy Griffith Show, Star Trek, Father Knows Best, The Twilight Zone, Flipper, and more!

Attempt at satire?.......2004-09-03
This book is a tongue-in-cheek (I hope) self-help book for improving your personality by watching TV. In the style of self-help psychology books, this book starts off by laying out the problem- -most people have flawed personalities. After the diagnosis, the book proceeds through a number of chapters that romp through fads and schools of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Topics include issues of self-esteem, co-dependence, dysfunction, rage (where the title comes from- -we all secretly want to kill Gilligan because he's such a klutz), depression, and fear of death. Miller also manages to slip in some Freud and dream analysis, as well as paranormal phenomena. Each of these topics is illustrated through the behavior of characters in popular TV shows. The discussions rely heavily on the reader's familiarity with these TV characters. If you don't know all the characters, some of the text may leave you in the dark. (If you do know all the characters, you have a serious problem with TV addiction.) Each chapter also includes preposterous exercises that you can do which involve watching TV shows analytically to improve the personality defect under discussion. The last third of the book is devoted to brief (3-4 paragraph) psychological analyses of personality problems as illustrated in 25 popular TV series from the 1950s-1980s (mostly from the 1950s and 1960s). The book is illustrated throughout with black-and-white publicity stills from numerous popular TV programs of the 1950s-1980s.
I think the book is supposed to be funny. However, it's too serious for satire, and too odd to be sincere. Successful satiric writing often relies on such techniques as fiddling with the proportion of details, focusing on the minutiae while de-emphasizing other ideas, or telling a recognizable story with a few well-chosen outrageous changes. Miller seems to think the whole idea of watching more television in order to fix your personality is funny enough in itself, and he sounds almost serious enough that you have to wonder if he was actually proposing his "Teletherapy" for real. For me, the only mildly amusing parts of the book were the creative footnotes used to cite imaginary sources. One disturbing factor is Miller's approach of treating television characters as if they were real, since belief in television people is one step down the slippery slope towards tele-isolation. But maybe that was supposed to funny?
Despite these flaws, the book does have one worthwhile exercise:
"Assertiveness Through Television"
1. Stand up in front of your television with a remote control in your hand. Turn to C-Span or some other low energy station.
2. Practice turning the set off and on according to your own inner decision, not related to the content of the show. State your intentions out loud in a commanding tone of voice, "I turn you off!" and then "I turn you on!"
3. When you feel greater confidence, switch to a more intense channel, such as The Cartoon Network or MTV, and try it again. Work your way up so that you are able to even watch your favorite channel and turn it off right in the middle of the episode!
To this, I would add:
4. Now that you have your TV off, call a family member, go for a bike ride, read a book or magazine, practice an instrument, attend a school play, go visit a neighbor, or do anything else to keep yourself busy. Time yourself- -see how long you can go without turning the TV back on again.
Wonderful Satire!.......2001-09-21
This book is a great tongue-in-cheek sendup of self help. Not everyone gets Miller's wry humor - but if you get it you're in for a hilarious ride!
This book was awful!.......2000-08-16
This book was awful! I got a quarter of the way through it and threw it away. I have read many books on television, this is one to avoid.
A well written tongue-in-cheek review of television insights.......1999-03-12
After a long day at work this is the kind of book many professionals will enjoy picking up for a light trip down TV's memory lane. The psychological insights into so many of the popular 70's, 80's and 90's TV shows are hilarious.
Dr. Will helped me find my inner boob tube, and it glows!".......1999-03-10
The witty insights from renowned "Teletherapist" Dr. Will Miller, can not only help you realize life long happines and wealth, but also to help you reason with yourself as to why you would watch an episode of "Taxi," that you've already seen 30 times, at 1:30 in the morning when you do have to work. Through Dr. Will's simple analysis you will find it okay that you stare longingly at Betty Rubble, and you will find that Mr. Furley did have a 'quality' about him that may keep you awake in bed. All of these things are okay, as long as you are okay. And really, aren't we all okay as long as we realize we don't have Nicholas' haircut from Eight is Enough?

Vintage Va Va Voom!.......2007-02-28
I purchased the DVD by the same name and purposely waited to crack open the "companion book". It's a really cute coffee table conversation piece. I totally get it! It looks exactly like an old vintage photo album - chock full of stills from the movie and more, complete with side laces. It even has a groovy autograph page at the end! There is no copy in the book, other than a letter in the beginning, but that would have completely ruined the concept as there is no copy in a photo album! I love it...
So THIS is why they call Burlesque a Tease!.......2005-11-22
I purchased this book with the Dvd of the same name--while the Dvd was not great, this book was rather worse. There was no text whatsoever, not even an introduction to explain the concept! Lots of glossy pics of neo-Burlesque dolls, some none too flattering to the ladies in question. I was very disappointed--if you are a particular fan of either Erochica Bamboo or Kitten Deville you may like this picture book anyways. (Or just buy "The Bare Truth...Stars of Burlesque from the 40s & 50s")
Book Description
Although many people might start with Java by picking up a beginning Java-type book, one alternative route is through web programming as Java has always had an affinity to the web. Putting together a JSP page is a relatively easy affair, therefore this book takes the approach of teaching Java through teaching JSP.
Covers the latest version of the JavaServer Pages specification 2.0 using the official reference implementation - Apache Tomcat 5. Also covers software, technologies, and specifications associated with JSP, including Struts, and Apache Tomcat 5.

Customer Reviews:
At most an average computer book.......2007-03-20
The directory structure described in 1st chapter doesn't fit Tomcat's directory structure. The text description is correct, but the screen shot is wrong. Also in 1st chapter, the JAR files that should be included in PATH variable also have the wrong name. This is very low-level mistakes.
The 2nd chapter reviews HTML. Well, it is rather confusing than helpful. Then in Chapter 4 the author talks about database and tries to explain Normalization. I'd rather the author skips on this topic because he/she seems just lack of ability to explain things in the clear way.
I bought this book to learn JSP, not to compose an errata for the author. I believe most readers don't like to do that either. If you would like avoid unnecessary headache, look else where.
A Self Contained, Extensive Introduction to JSP, Tomcat, Servlets and Related .......2005-11-29
First of all:
I did like this book. It gave me an easyly accessible introduction to all this business around using Tomcat. The author took quite some trouble to explain every related technology (HTML, CSS, SQL, OO, Java ...) in some detail. Sometimes you want to read through it to get reminded, sometimes you want to skim over it and sometimes even to skip it. But it is good that it is there. I do not know if you can actually grasp those related technologies, if you never saw them before. For me the rehash was helpful on all the cases I needed them.
The core topics of the book: JSP itself with its expression language und standard tag libraries were very well explained and easy to grasp also for a first timer like me. I now do have a good feeling for its core topics and their whereabouts. I only got lost (a little) in the last chapter about Struts. There is seemingly so much overlap to other technologies (EL, JSTL, home grown Beans) that I did not succeed to get a clear picture of when to use what.
CRAP.......2004-12-11
I did not read this book through because not even the 1st sample code works (due to configuration). Sent questions to two of the aythors the email addresses given in the book are not even valid !!! I went to sun website and the anwser was straight forward. If a book for novice can not explain better than Sun's official documents, why bother write the book?
Waste of time and Money! Keep away from these authors who failed to display professionalism!
Beginning JSP 2 - not quite a set-by-step book.......2004-10-26
I had bought this book to improve my knowledge of JSP - which is rather limited. I had expected, from the text on the back cover, this to be a comprehensive book on how to code JSPs (with lots of examples - which I like). In reality I was rather disappointed.
The first Chapter went well, how to install Tomcat, and the second wasn't too bad (a review of HTML) but by the third chapter I started to notice a lack of clarity. It wasn't always clear which text I should be typing in and which were simply given as an aside - which for a step-by-step guide is frustrating. The fourth chapter was far worse. This started of by saying that we would be using mySQL, but failed to give any indication of where to get the software from, how to install it or how to start the server (you need to start the server to follow the examples). And then a number of the example instructions, that were given in this chapter, did not work without modification. I was able to work round these problems and make progress. But as this wasn't a core chapter (I read this book to learn how to use JSPs not mySQL) I had expected to go through it quickly.
Overall the content was very useful and I learnt a lot, but the book would benefit from being edited (again?) and a second edition.
Beginning JSP 2? Yeah, right........2004-09-28
"Beginning JSP 2?" Yeah, right. Try: "Beginning JSP 2, HTML, JDBC, Java, JSTL, XML, XSLT, XML DTDs, XML Schemas, Servlets, Filters, with some MVC (Model 2) and Struts thrown in for Good Measure." While my recommended title may be a bit too long to be practical as a book title, it would better capture the materials covered from an introductory level, in "Beginning JSP 2."
In about 360 pages, through 10 chapters, this book covers the technologies listed above, describing what they are, what they do, why folks are using them, how to use them, and how they relate and work with other technologies. Following these action packed chapters, the appendixes serve as great quick references on JSP syntax, implicit JSP objects, and various XML configuration files.
To nitpick a bit: The book could benefit from some more aggressive editing, in parts, where sentence and paragraph wording is occasionally a little clumsy, and a few good-to-understand details were left out.
The description on the back cover of the book says, "All you need... is a basic understanding of HTML and Java." I suggest this be corrected as follows: "All you need to know in order to follow and understand the lessons in 'Beginning JSP 2' is enough HTML to create a 'Hello World!' web page, and enough Java to create a 'Hello World!' application." On second thought, even if you can't do those things, yet, after reading this book, you'll be able to do a whole lot more.

Ideal for anyone new to JavaServer Pages (JSP), Beginning JSP Web Development offers an excellent and thorough guide to using JSP effectively. Combining a tutorial of basic Java with excellent practical material on using Tomcat and related tools, this book will fill a valuable niche for anyone wanting to build Web applications the right way using some of the latest standards in Java.
Learning JSP today requires not only a basic knowledge of Java, but also practical advice for using Tomcat, custom tag libraries, database programming, and other standards. This title distinguishes itself with chapter-by-chapter coverage of all you need to program with JSP. For those new to Java, introductory material on data types, flow control, and basic class design will help you learn essential Java. The authors also present practical advice and samples for installing and configuring Tomcat (an open source JSP/servlet engine), including advice on deployment options. Sections on database and JDBC programming, servlets, and session management supplement the basics of using JSP with embedded Java scriptlets.
Standout material on JSP custom tag libraries will justify the price of this book for many readers (including those with previous Java experience, but little JSP exposure). Several sections on designing and deploying custom tag libraries show you how to make use of this powerful new Sun standard. The text closes with leading-edge material on the new Struts Web application framework, including a worthwhile case study for an online travel database using this pre-packaged codebase as a starting point. Sun has endorsed Struts and other application frameworks as a "best practice" when building JSP-based applications, and the authors do a good job showing off this solution, including advice on configuration options.
With JSP evolving into an even more powerful and flexible Web solution using custom tag libraries and other standards, this book fits the bill with an up-to-the-minute and approachable tour of exactly what any developer needs to use JSP productively in real projects. --Richard Dragan
Book Description
JavaServer Pages (JSP) is an increasingly popular technology for building dynamic web applications that can access databases and provide an interactive experience for your site's users. JSP is built on top of the Java programming language, and so this book will teach you both JSP itself and the fundamentals of Java.
You'll learn how the web works and how JSP fits in, how to get input from the user and create web pages "on the fly", how JavaBeans components and tag libraries allow you to make your code more readable and easier to maintain, and of course how the Java language itself works. The book also covers how to handle errors in your code, the best ways of designing web applications, and rounds up with a comprehensive case study - a web site for a local tourism authority.
This book covers: How to install Java and JSP/Servlets
How to create dynamic web sites with JavaServer Pages (JSP)
Object-oriented programming in Java
Java's core utility and input/output classes
How to use and create JSP Tag Libraries
Best practices in designing web applications with Java
Relational database access with MySQL and JDBC
Using the popular Struts framework to simplify application design
Includes frequent worked examples, including an in-depth case study
Customer Reviews:
A presentation with holes.......2003-12-10
This book presents ideas from top-down. They show you something and then explain the pieces that they think are important. They are fairly good at this but the problem is they don't explain everything in detail. They tell you just enough about a subject to make you think you understand it but gloss over pitfalls. They keep telling you not to worry about certain parts of the code - they will explain them later. I think learning a language from the bottom up is better. That way one understands all the pieces that are being assembled. This book is getting the job done but I'm often confused about what code (explained in later chapters) is doing. Maybe I should read the book in reverse order...
No source code for this book.......2003-10-13
The book says that the source code can be downloaded from wrox.com. But that is not true. The book does not have a CD nor does it have source code at wrox.com. Beaware of it.
The Editor should be ashamed.......2002-12-10
Thanks to everyone who mentioned the numerous errors in this book in their reviews. I only wish I had read them before buying the book. Not only is it full of every type of error you can think of, it is also poorly organized with a heavy-duty chapter on tag libraries sandwiched between otherwise introductory material. Also, the last half of the book is meant to be a case study but the sections are pasted together with little or no indication as to what is part of the case study and what is an overall observation making it impossible to follow along. If you do buy the book (and I recommend you don't) print out the errata list from their website -- it'll save you hours of frustration. However, don't expect it to be complete.
good but needs more examples.......2002-12-08
This book is a solid introduction that covers all the key basics. Be aware that over half the book is spent teaching Java, not JSP. Since I already know the basics of java, the numerous Java chapters were a distraction to the main point of JSP/Servlet programming. Also, being a beginner to JSP, I have to agree with an earlier reviewer that the book hurries on to each next chapter with only the barest of examples to illustrate the topic, and usually the examples are just "toys". You have to wait until the end of the book where two chapters are devoted to developing a realistic web application. The result is that you don't get a chance, as you go along, to really practice a concept and see it in various contexts. Also, I like to get into database access early in a book, since using a database is the main point of a web application. In this one, you have to wait until near the end before you learn how. Aside from these caveats, the book is clearly written, the concepts are well explained, and it covers the subject quite well.
Good Beginners text.......2002-05-24
I found this book to be very useful. I have been developing we applications now for 4 years using ASP, and I still found this book useful. I have been trying to find a good book about developing we apps, especially in JSP. It has great examples for developing the JSP page and the presentation is also excellent. The one star missing due to lack of robust code in some sections.Nevertheless,a must have book for all.
