Giving it away.......2007-09-14
I bought this without seeing it. I thought 'we love penguins so it can't be bad'. It is. It follows the rhyme pattern of Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed only THIS DOESN'T RHYME. It was painful to read aloud. While the artwork is adorable, the lack of rhyme and flow just grated. The kids (7, 7 and 3) thought it was fun, but haven't asked for it again and haven't missed it since I put it in the 'give away' box.
My kids love this book!!.......2006-03-23
We received this from my kids' pediatrician for my daughter's 18 month checkup. They absolutely love it and you can tell cause it's all beat up already and we've only had it for 2 months. Great story, love it lots.

Book Description
A hilarious look at life in a colony of penguins, where trying to find one's parents is an uproarious challenge when everyone looks alike, where ice floes are treacherously slippery, even for penguins, and where a passing ice breaker can complicate the path of true love.

Truly insipid.......2006-08-03
Working in a library, I have seen many humorous cartoon books suitable for children. Penguins on Ice is not one of them. I would give it 0 stars if I could. This book I found foolish and, frankly, dull, and there are a couple of parts that more protective parents might object to, like drunkenness and implications of penguin sex. The drawings are cutsie, and the text is flat and pointless. Would not recommend to anyone.
A lot of fun.......2005-12-22
Sergio Salma was born in Charleroi, Belgium to Italian parents. Having been educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Mons, he became famous for his cartoon work. In this funny little book, the author turns towards the north, with a series of cartoons on penguins, Eskimos, ice, and life in general. And, who is at the center of it all? The longsuffering penguin, Ice Fred!
Overall, I found this little book to be a lot of fun. The author has an interesting look on life, and I enjoyed the many adventures in the frozen north. Designed for children, just about any reader will enjoy this book, as I have. I highly recommend this book.

A must for any Pens fan!.......2001-02-26
This book is great! It provides a sentimental and personal insight into the Pens' 1992 Stanley Cup season, complete with many interviews with the players. It is obvious that Molinari cares about the Penguins because of the emotion that this book can bring out in any Penguins fan. A great book to read to relive the early 1990s dominance of the Penguins.

Book Description
Charly, a penguin from Antarctica, is extremely worried about global warming and climate change. He makes a journey to New York City to confront human beings and their political leaders at the United Nations. Charly claims that the earth has been destroyed by wastefulness, destruction of natural habitats, and climatic calamity and demands that they purchase a new planet.
Along the way, Charly the penguin meets many friends who help him in his quest: twelve-year-old Kwa Marita Né, Jr., who lives in Mquesha, a small village in Ciskei, South Africa; Fipsi the zebra; Builtherself, an artificially created machine that is also a nature-based being; Serendipity the elephant; and Oscar the ostrich. As Charly and his friends fill out all the necessary paperwork and formulate their plan of action, another group is also plotting. Members of the World Bank as well as many HINWIs (high net worth individuals) and U-HINWIs (ultra-high net worth individuals) are deceitfully proposing to purchase a new planet to which they would let the penguins travel once earth has been used upbut their contribution will be the oil and gold of Antarctica.
Will Charly's desperate pleas be resolved before Earth's resources are exhausted?

Penguin's World.......2007-10-02
This fairy tale like so many others is directed to an adult audience as it lays bare in a playful and humerous way the concept our society is functioning. I highly recommend this marvellously drawn story to anyone who wishes to think beyond....
That's how it really is!.......2007-08-11
Being one of the scientists who know the author from the time he spent with us here in Antarctica, I can only thank him for his good work and the accuracy of the book which he says is a novel...well, to us and the millions of penguins it is damned real. The glaciers are crying icebergs into the ocean and once the ice is gone, some idiots will come and look for oil here as well, we can imagine. It needs some penguins to have the guts to tell the human beings that they fxxxed up the whole planet!
another March of the Penguins is necessary.......2007-08-11
So, Northpole is gone, the polar bears drown as they have to swim ever farer to find food and shelter, farmers in Greenland are growing brocoli in the valleys from where the glaciers have retracted, the climate change is high on the agenda after the nuclear industries have successfully lobbied the EU commission, media is bugging us with frightening news about heat waves and tsunamis, but at the same time, the industrialised nations are opening the race to the Northpole to find more oil now as the ice is gone, to burn it and by this further fuel the climate change. This novel of the sole penguin fighting against the corrupt first world leadership is just right in time to make us think about whose lies we are listening to and why penguins don't like brocoli!
Not so Happy Feet anymore.......2007-02-06
My eyes were opened by Charly, the penguin from Antarctica as he laid bare why the penguin's feet aren't happy anymore. How cynical of us human beings to produce singing and swinging shows of our penguin friends while in reality they are becoming extinct because of us human beings, our profilgacy, our restless destruction of Earth. This novel is far more realistic than anything our political leaders ever have said.
Apocalypses' Happy End.......2006-05-23
I was stunned by how the author had developed the story-line keeping suspense as well as maintaining a good mixture of tragedy and humour until the very end when other than the apocalypse itself nothing else could happen but then I was completely surprised. It is certainly not easy to describe the apocalypse with a good deal of humour but to let it appear as a Happy End has simply overwhelmed me.

Book Description
The Mass Media and Power in Modern Britain is a thorough, lively introduction to the role, importance, and power of the mass media in contemporary British society. What is the mass media., and how does it help shape life in modern Britain? After introducing students to discussions around these questions, the authors examine the historical development of the mass media, issues of ownership, and the roots of its power in the public and political sphere. Contemporary questions surrounding today's media are also addressed. What is the role of the audience? How do people take pleasure from media culture? What are the issues surrounding the news, advertising, public services broadcasting, the shaping of public understanding, censorship, violence, and `moral panics'? The authors also look towards the future, considering prospects for a global media and the possible effects of the information superhighway. An invaluable introduction and point of reference for students of sociology, media studies, politics, and human geography, The Mass Media and Power in Modern Britain will be essential reading for anyone interested in our mass media.

Book Description
Italian Modernism was written in response to the need for an historiographic and theoretical reconsideration of the concepts of Decadentismo and the avant-garde within the Italian critical tradition. Focussing on the confrontation between these concepts and the broader notion of international modernism, the essays in this important collection seek to understand this complex phase of literary and artistic practices as a response to the epistemes of philosophical and scientific modernity at the end of the nineteenth century and in the first three decades of the twentieth.
Intellectually provocative, this collection is the first attempt in the field of Italian Studies at a comprehensive account of Italian literary modernism. Each contributor documents how previous critical categories, employed to account for the literary, artistic, and cultural experiences of the period, have provided only partial and inadequate descriptions, preventing a fuller understanding of the complexities and the interrelations among the cultural phenomena of the time.

Book Description
Tough motion-graphics and effects production challenges require bold solutions, and Adobe's completely overhauled After Effects 6.0 ($699, Standard Edition; $999, Professional Edition) has a bushel of them! Here to get you up to speed on it--perhaps in time to meet your next deadline!--is everyone's favorite task-based guide. Employing the same concise instructions and visual approach as Peachpit's popular Visual QuickStart Guides but geared toward more advanced users, this Visual QuickPro Guide covers all the improvements that make this version of Adobe's motion-graphics and effects program such a boon to video pros of all stripes: a revolutionary text engine, support for OpenGL (which greatly accelerates 2D and 3D graphics rendering), new vector paint tools (which allow painting on layers), a faster and more accurate motion tracker, advanced keying tools, and more. Through step-by-step instructions, enhanced by plenty of tips and sidebars, veteran video editor Antony Bolante will have you effectively and efficiently importing and managing footage, viewing and editing layers, applying effects, animating type, and more in no time.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to use reference for a Novice-Intermediate After Effects Student.......2006-03-08
I found this book to be a very easy to navigate reference for my attempt at learning and using After Effects. I recommend it as an excellent cross-reference resource, especially if you are attending an After Effects classroom. I'm not sure, however, whether a nubie or novice would be able to learn easily just from reading this book alone. Nevertheless, I give this book and the way it is structured, two-thumbs up as far as adding it to anyone's Visual Media Library.
typical.......2005-10-21
I wasn't expecting anything less and the only reason I got the book was because it was cheaper on amazon then at my college's bookstore. Now what I didn't realize was the fact that Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects volumes 1 and 2 are far superior to any other book out there. So I recommend those instead. This book is just as dull and boring as most informational software books with little explanation about how to do things, little picture representation and only explaining the basics oh in say 700 pages.... if you know how to use adobe illustator or photoshop which u clearly should if you intend on using aftereffects, I suggest whether you are a beginner intermediate or advanced animator to get the creating motion graphics books instead. Ya 10$ more but the learning experience and education you'll get from those books compared to this one is uncomparable.
Overall in 700 pages i really just skimmed through like i do with most books exactly written like this one. not very good at keeping my attention with black and white dull text with boring material.
Good Basic Book for After Effects.......2004-11-04
It says the books in the Visual QuickPro series are similar to the Visual QuickStart series, but QuickPro is for more advanced users. After Effects is, by its very nature, a more advanced application for creating video than, say iMovie. That's because After Effects is a "motion graphics" program with far more features than basic video editing. I think of it as Photoshop with motion and a timeline.
However, if you are a beginner at After Effects, this book can still work for you if you start with the early chapters first.
Bolante does a good job of giving you an overview of After Effects' interface, palettes, and the workflow. He moves on to how to create, open and close projects, including how to choose your settings and change them.
Next is importing files, how to import still images, image sequences, files with alpha channels, footage, etc. He also tells you how to loop footage and remove film pulldown. If you don't know what that is, look at page 60 for a few pages of good explanation.
The chapter on Managing Footage does a nice job of helping you organize your footage and understand how to view it. (Do you know about action-safe and title-safe areas?)
Like Photoshop, After Effects works in layers (with the addition of audio layers), and Bolante gives you the skinny on creating, naming, hiding, showing and rasterizing them. Editing is all about manipulating the layers by trimming, moving, sequencing, overlapping, splitting, changing the layer's speed, etc.
Motion Graphics is all about adding images, motion, changes in size, transparency, blending modes and more. Most of it is done with keyframes. Chapter 7 gives the ins and outs of keyframing. There is a big chapter on masking. Like Photoshop, you use masks to bled various images together. But, you begin, end, rotate, change, scale, show and hide them over time. He covers it all.
Special effects are the "magic" part of After Effects, so Bolante devotes a couple of chapters to their intricacies. There are also chapters on creating and animating text, painting on layers, keyframe interpolation (advanced layer techniques), integrating 3D layers, managing complex projects, and, of course, outputting your movies. All-in-all, it is a very thorough book for both Mac and PC users.
many special effects.......2004-10-18
Adobe is striving mightily to make After Effects the dominant tool for editing animated images, much like Photoshop is the pre-eminent program for editing static images. Bolante shows here why AE has a far more challenging task.
Even leaving aside competing tools, AE must handle video editing and audio editing. Here, it needs to synchronise two such tracks, in such ways as the ending of one triggering the start of another.
The audio editing is somewhat rudimentary. Other programs that specialise in this have more sophisticated options. But, unsurprisingly, the video editing forms the major part of AE. Several chapters are devoted to it. Many video special effects come right out of the box. Like texturing surfaces, or applying a gradient wipe.
Of course, many films will need text to be shown in the video. As expected, you get a panoply of font families to choose from. Along with effects like showing text along a contour that you define. Quite familiar to Photoshop users. But now redone in a broader context.
To be sure, this is not a simple book. The complexity of film editing necessitates this. But you should find that most tasks described here are straightforward to do. Though realistically, if you're trying a technique for the first time, many iterations may be needed before you're satisfied.
