I picked up Jan Eliot's first collection of "Stone Soup" by chance, and was impressed enough to order the next two. This, the third volume, collects strips that follow the adventures of the Stone family. There's Val, who raises two kids while struggling with workaday woes and finds sudden romance with a motorcycle cop. There's Holly and Alix, Val's daughters, who struggle as kids do against Val and against each other. There's sister Joan, who tries to raise two-year-old Max while running a copywriting service from home. There's Gramma, who lives with the lot of them and offers a constant critique of their lives and lifestyles. There's neighbor Wally, who, after a long and epic struggle, has at last made the romantic connection with Joan. A bunch of finely-drawn characters---in both the "literary" and "cartoon" sense.

It deals with any number of hot button nineties issues: the nature and place of women, life at work and home, the struggle to make ends meet, modern romance, child-rearing. Turn to nearly any page, and you're sure to find something profound and thought-provoking. Plots spin out over several pages, and one-strip gags are frequent. Certainly it held my interest.

My only regret: trying to catch up to the presently-running strips. I can only hope there will be further volumes.

Oh, and did I mention it's extremely funny? It's extremely funny...

Stone Soup: A great comic strip by Jan Eliot.......2002-07-13

Jan Eliot has put together quite a strip with Stone Soup. It's the story of a widow raising two young daughters. The comic strip depicts the day to day tribulations and challenges of being a struggling single parent who must balance her career and family without going crazy. Eliot's portrayal is funny because it's accurate--everybody will remember how hard it was to be a teenager. The family is not perfect--they quarrel and fight--but at the same time really do love each other, and Eliot is able to portray this with sincerity but avoids phony sentimentality. The name "Stone Soup" is taken from the old folk tale about making something out of nothing, which is appropriate for the strip. I believe Stone Soup will become one of the most popular family strips in the funny papers. Did I mention the art work is excellent too?

You must read this!! The story of two single mothers,always broke, three children, a grandmother, and a dog girl hyperactive interacting with the boyfriends of the two young mothers can be very boring or an amazing fun. You will start reading from page one to the end, and them try desperately try to buy the other two books of the collection. Remember that you can take a daily peak on your newspaper, and if not demand the editor to publish it.

Gosh who wouldn't love this book; each and and every character has a real-life personality to enjoy. Jan Eliot's comic strip is a must read for anyone with a good sense of humor. Every strip is fun to read, time and time again. I really like to see how the family grows. A MUST READ

Jan Eliot has done it again with her Third Collection of Stone Soup. I laughed all the way through the book the first night I received it. Stone Soup makes life look livable. To see what Val and Joan are going through is just hilarious! This book is worth buying and saving for years to come; too look back and laugh some more!

My Uncle Roy is the best!.......2004-07-15

Sure. I'll admit it. This review is predjudice because Roy Wilder, Jr. is my uncle. But in all honesty, I do enjoy "You All Spoken Here" and find it very resourceful in my southern lit. classes. Uncle Roy went to alot of work researching southern sayings and such, and enjoyed (almost) every minute of it. Countless fellow writers (including Charles Frasier, who owns a copy and who also wrote a book called "Cold Mountain"- maybe you've heard of it?) credit Roy with writing one of the most well researched, insightful and just plain fun to read books out there! All of his time and efforts paid off, because this book is definately worth the $15 they're charging you. So go buy it!

The absolute BEST collection of down-home sayings!!.......1999-08-23

I bought this book years ago and have bought many others like it since. But of all the southern expressions books I have, YOU ALL SPOKEN HERE remains my favorite. The sayings all by themselves are great, but the book is also sprinkled with other amusing tidbit treasures of life in the South. If you enjoy Southern humor, DON'T MISS THIS BOOK!! And Mr. Wilder, if you're reading this... Please Write Volume Two Soon!!! I'll be the first in line to buy it!

Delightful, if disorganized.......1999-06-04

I found this book about 10 years ago and have returned to browse through my dog-eared copy many times since. Wilder has a wonderful collection of sayings and lore here, and I never put down the book without thinking "I'm going to remember a couple more of those expressions and start using them." But be warned, the chapters and chapter titles seem to be mostly for decoration. They only loosely describe the rambling contents of each section. There is no index (at least in my edition), so relocating a particular express (now what was it he said about hot weather?) is a challenge. I almost always get distracted before I can find what I'm looking for. But I greatly enjoy what I find along the way.

Essential!.......2003-07-30

Norwood has written a treatise on how to play the Modern that is like an "insider's" guide. He know this opening, its ups and downs (and sideways). Even though it is called "Winning with," it is written objectively. In fact, it starts out with several lengthy chess quotes about he weakness of the king's finachetto. He tells you what to look out for, and teaches you the ideas and strategies for the most common lines. He discusses many important themes: transpositions, counterattack, restraint, and many others. This book has a nice index and is very well written. It is a gripping account of this wonderful defence. I have been so pleased since I tracked down and bought this book.

An unappreciated gem.......2003-03-05

David Norwood lives and breathes the Modern, and it comes through in this wonderful and highly unappreciated book. Norwood is a great writer, and better yet, he is cool. Not goofy cool, or "wow, isn't chess amazing" cool. Just cool. He gets it, and he knows how to teach it and how to express it. I love all of his works, and am sure that there are many chess fans out there who would love this book if they could only see it. There are lengthy explanations of the ideas behind the Modern, viewpoints of it, pro and con (for instance he quotes at length from a work of Akiba Rubinstein (1926) explaining why finachetto openings are not good.) I have never seen this type of frankness in a book like this. He really explains it well, and then shows how things work in many of his own games. If you like the Modern or the Pirc, you NEED this book, even if you already have Pirc Alert, Modern Defence (McDonald, Speelman), etc. This one is really great.

The Modern (Robatsch) Defense.......2000-01-19

Provides a wealth of insight into one of the more off-beat schemes of defense for the Black pieces. The system features the moves g6, Bg7, and c6 or d6 for Black, is easy to learn, especially for kids, because the same basic moves can be played by Black against almost any opening played by White. My 8 yr-old son's USCF rating has climbed from 500 to almost 1000 in just 4 months using this system. In my view, it is for Black what such straight-forward openings like the Colle are to White.

Buy one or the other, not both.......2002-10-09

I really wanted to like these books. Despite the hassles of ordering the two books by Ken Lyons and receiving only one of them (not once, but twice), I persevered and finally wound up with the two-volume set at the advertised price. And here is what I found:

I) "Winning Secrets of Football's Great Offensive Attacks": Similar in concept, if not scope or chronology, to Dwight "Dee" Hawkes' "Football's Best Offensive Playbook", this volume is an attempt to synthesize all offensive schemes since 1912 into a single volume, highlighting the best plays from each. It is a masterly attempt, and if it fails in its task, it does so by a very narrow margin (a few too many mistakes and mis-characterizations, to be expected in such a massive undertaking). What it DOES offer, however, is the single best football bibliography I have ever seen -- books, magazine articles, clinic notes and handouts -- Coach Lyons has collected an enormous wealth of football resources in his bibliography, which to me would alone justify buying this book.

II) "Make The Most of Available Personnel With Football's Modern F-L-E-X-I-N-G Offense": Hands-down winner of the Most A-N-N-O-Y-I-N-G Title award for a football book -- ever. Once inside the book, I'm afraid Coach Lyons fails to establish his thesis -- why his "multiflex" I formation attack makes better use of available personnel than any other offensive system. Beyond that, it is a competently-written description of an offense which takes 9 runs and 9 passes and presents them from multiple, shifting formations with the intent of confusing the defense. While entirely sound, this is hardly revolutionary stuff. I believe a high school coach looking for an offense to run could make a more than creditable start by purchasing Coach Lyons' book -- but I could say the same and more about roughly 20 other offensive guides...
