2 out of 5 stars "Almost as exciting as a college anatomy textbook".......2002-09-13

I had high hopes when I purchased this book. I am sorry to say, I was not impressed. As a budding Real Estate student, I hoped to get a lot of great information on buying and selling properties. It seemed to me, that Dr. Powelsons only interest is to take advantage of unsuspecting victims (Caveat Emptor). That wasn't my biggest gripe, however. This book was just plain tough to read, It's not that it contains big words or anything, it's just plain confusing. I also felt that the print was too small. Almost every time I start reading it I fall asleep. Perhaps it is written only for advanced investors. I will keep my book as a reference guide,as there is a lot of great information in it. "The Real Estate Bible", as he calls it... hardly... Sorry, thats just my opinion. Modern Real Estate Practice, by Galaty, Allaway, and Kyle--now that is more like the Real Estate Bible. That book covers just about everything pertaining to Real Estate. This book is just about buying and selling for nothing down, etc.. As I've said, this book does have a lot of advise concerning creative financing, and I may have some of its information tucked away somewhere in my gray matter. Someday this book may make more sense to me, but not now.

4 out of 5 stars Change the way you see things........2002-07-11

I enjoyed reading this book. Lowry & Powelson made things simple to understand...and exciting. You cannot help but want to get up everytime you put the book down and go out to try the techniques put forward by the authors of the book.

Most of us have only been exposed to the usual ways of thinking. The usual models. The usual methods of dealing with real estate. Reading this book expanded my horizons and one cannot help but start to think and see things differently.

There are books that lecture you. This book inspires me to go out and do something - to try.

5 out of 5 stars A TEN OUT OF TEN--EXCELLENT.......2001-11-22

Since the book has received rave reviews from the LA Times and other national newspapers, this book is a must read for all those serious about gaining wealth in real estate transactions.

By ROBERT J. BRUSS, Special to The Times
If you are a serious real estate investor, or if you want to be, don't miss Richard C. Powelson's new book, "Formulas for Wealth." The author, a former president of the Illinois Assn. of Realtors, former director of the National Assn. of Realtors and a longtime real estate investment seminar instructor, knows his topic.

Powelson focuses on how to get started investing in real estate with zero or little cash and build a fortune. Along the way, he explains dozens of techniques he has used, such as land contracts, lease-options and wraparound mortgages. The author doesn't overlook the downsides of these investment techniques, and he shows how to avoid problems. For example, in the section on land contracts (where the seller retains title but the buyer is the equitable owner), Powelson emphasizes the importance of using an escrow agent to collect the buyer's payments, to make payments on the existing mortgages and to hold the property deed until the buyer is entitled to receive it.

If the book has a flaw, it is the unrealistically low prices in the examples. The author lives in the Midwest, near Kansas City, Mo., where realty prices are cheap. His low-price illustrations, such as being able to buy houses for $40,000 or $50,000 when the nationwide average is more than $100,000, test readers' skills in relationship to their local residential markets. This is a sophisticated book that novice realty investors will probably need to read several times to fully understand.

When I read my first real estate book back in 1963 by Nickerson ("How I Turned $1,000 into $1,000,000 in My Spare Time"), I outlined it to understand its unique realty techniques, which had never been explained in print before. Powelson's book, which is excellent, isn't quite in Nickerson's class. But it is a modern summary of dozens of real estate investment techniques. Not every method will work on every property purchase, but all you need is one.

The book's theme is "how to invest in real estate with little or none of your own cash." Along the way, the author shares creative techniques he has used to build his estate over his long realty investment career. Some methods seem more relevant than others, but it's up to the reader to decide which methods to use.

Although I don't agree with all of the book's advice, especially about using bonds to purchase real estate, this new book is a worthwhile read.

It is filled with old and new real estate finance ideas that most readers either haven't learned yet or have forgotten. On a scale of one to ten, I give this excellent book a solid 10.

    Book Description

Full Metal Panic: Overload! is not so much a sequel to the first manga series as it is a retelling of the FMP mythos. Originally serialized in a magazine aimed at slightly younger readers, Overload! has the same basic story with a lot more comedy and a lot more explosions! Sosuke has finally lost his mind - and his memory! Rehashing his previous exploits will keep Kaname busy, but it doesn't take long for the military mind of this soldier to bounce back with a bang - literally! He's locked, loaded, and back to his old self by first period, as bombs and bullets grace the halls of high school!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic FMP.......2006-03-15

I'm a huge fan of the series and an avid collector of all things Full Metal Panicy. The characters and how they develope interest me the most. The almost tragic relationship between souske and kaname is what keeps me so deeply intrigued. I mean how can you not love the way they act with each other??! Many a time reading this comic in the quiet spaces of my dorm have i just burst out in laughter causing my roommate to think i'm nuts, only because i say to myself "thats souske alright!"

Fantastic and hilarious start to this new series of comics! Shouji keep up the great work! I look forward to more of them, and i hope you other FMP maniacs will do the same.

    3 out of 5 stars WOW IT'S A PANIC AND A OVERLOAD WATCH OUT!!!!.......2005-08-31

I thick this one was alright it had no point thow. Just alot of bombs!!!!! I thick kids will like it thow i gese

    4 out of 5 stars A good laugh à la FMP!.......2005-07-07

Don't expect an actual rerun of the original FMP manga (or novel for that matter). This one emphasize more of the comic aspects of FMP! than the one done by Tetsu Tateo. The graphics are more comic-like and the plot not as complicated (think FMP: fumoffu). But don't get me wrong, it is still a good laugh. Sousuke is as much of a war-maniac as he can be (or maybe even more) while Kaname gets even more exasperated as ever and that's what really shines up in this new take of this popular serie. Don't miss it if you're a fan of FMP! (or not) and you liked the funny side of FMP!.

    Book Description

John Michael `Ozzy' Osbourne has been an icon for over thirty years, but of what? Of metal fans for being the wild vocalist of Black Sabbath and a hugely successful solo artist? Or is he an overblown rock casualty? Or a successful cartoon figure created by his marketing-genius wife? In the 1970s he was breaking all the rules and still is. In 2002 he is breaking all the records in the US as the star of The Osbournes, a fly-on-the-wall-documentary about his family that has beaten all previous MTV viewing figures. Here, the `tattooed, former booze-ridden, former drug-crazed sex god' is seen as the far-from-average husband, and father of teenage children. This is I Love Lucy meets

The Simpsons by way of The Addams Family and the public loves it! In this diverting, fast-paced read, Sue Crawford charts the extraordinary life and times of Ozzy Osbourne, with huge affection and wit. Hard-core metal fans will not be disappointed either. Ozzy is a true original, and we may be no less surprised and delighted than the man himself to find him still alive and well in the new millennium. This fascinating biography is that rare thing a genuine page-turner. With 32 pages of color photographs, and a full discography and chronology, Ozzy Unauthorized is a comprehensive, mind-blowing study of the past, present and, with its specially commissioned astrological chart, even the future, of a true survivor and a real star.

1 out of 5 stars Someone didn't check their facts.......2004-11-25

I was really disapointed with this one. Book states that Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin were influenced by Black Sabbath. However Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin came out before them.
Book also states The Band name Black Sabbath was taken from a 1930's Boris Karloff Movie, when the movie was made in the 1960's. Makes you really wonder what else is false about this book. Rubbish.

    2 out of 5 stars Half a diary of a madman.......2003-01-14

A good Ozzy biography is long overdue. Unfortunatly this is not it. The main text is sadly lacking in details including places and events. Ozzy's headlining show at the Donnington Monsters of Rock (16th Aug '86) doesn't get a mention and neither does his performance at the Port Vale festival (1st Aug '81) where he famously stood in for Black Sabbath. Almost crimainally, Ozzy's second guitarist, Jake E. Lee doesn't even receive a name check and is passed off as "...the first decent player that came along."
Positive notes? The discography section at the back is wonderfu. It's just a shame that the rest of the book is not as well researched.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent biography on Ozzy Osbourne.......2002-12-10

While I don't know the accuracy on all of the facts, this was a book I enjoyed reading. It gives you the real story, and quotes by members of Black Sabbath, Sharon Osbourne, and other people Ozzy is associated with; not rumors of Ozzy being a psychopath and Satanist as some sources claim. At the end of the book, there is a complete discography, including reissues and imports of Ozzy's solo albums and with Black Sabbath. There is also a great collection of photos in the middle of the book. I would definitely recommend this if you are a fan, or just interested in Ozzy Osbourne's life story.

5 out of 5 stars "Must" reading for Ozzy's legions of fans........2002-11-14

Ozzy Unauthorized by biographer Sue Crawford is an informed and informative charting heavy metal icon and unforgettable personality Ozzy Osbourne. Enhanced with 32 pages of photographs, a full discography and chronology, a specially commissioned astrological chart, this succinctly written biography offers a candid, no-holds-barred study of the man whose latest achievement is bringing record ratings to MTV as the star of uniquely irreverent "reality" documentary "The Osbournes." Ozzy Unauthorized is "must" reading for Ozzy's legions of fans.

    4 out of 5 stars Knew a little, learned a little........2002-09-14

Well, never being a true fan of Ozzy himself, yet enjoying his unique voice and solo music, I got this book to pass the time. That was all it was, a time passer. Being an animal lover I was disturbed about his antics of biting doves and bats heads off, but catching a few episodes of MTVs "The Osbornes" I liked the way he was and what he put up with with his own cats and dogs. I.E. cleaning up after them, walking them and showing genuine affection. But throwing animal insides back and forth at concerts, shooting every last one of his chickens, stabbing his aunt's cat... didn't settle well with me. Of course his drug and drink stupors are obvious and well known. But this was UNAUTHORIZED, and most of the authors words are either hearsay or from interviews she has seen of Ozzy. Maybe I will try the 'Ozzy in his own words' bio and take his own word for it. There wasnt anything else new to learn, same stuff that has been around for decades. The one great thing about this book is it has a listing of all of his recordings, films and even all of his tatoos. Why there is a big astronomy chapter of sagittaris and how it relates to Ozzy is beyond me, I couldnt even finish that chapter, it was so ridiculous. I think she should have left it at the simple fact that he was born in December and a sagittaris. But the book is OK if you have nothing better to read.

    Book Description

Photoplay editions—movie tie-in books published in conjunction with the release of the film—were first published around 1912, reached their height in the 1920s and 1930s, and continue, sporadically, to be published today. (And stage play editions go back to the 1890s.) For many lost films of early Hollywood, photoplay editions can be the most tangible reminders that they ever existed. The most popular, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, and King Kong, sell for thousands of dollars on those rare occasions when they are offered.

Two text chapters trace the history of photoplay editions to the present and discuss the major and minor publishers and the various formats that developed. The condition, popularity, demand, and value of photoplay edition books are also discussed. Part One is a list of American (including Canadian) photoplay editions listed by book title and including such details as the author, publisher, date published, alternate titles, type of dust jacket and the number of photographic stills, main credits, and the estimated value in U.S. dollars. Part Two is a simple list by author of these photoplay editions. Parts Three and Four follow the same format but are listings of British (including Australian) photoplay editions. Part Five lists stage play editions by book title (with full data) and Part Six is a simple list of stage play editions by actor or actress.

    Book Description

". . . succeeds in conveying the exciting and fascinating character of the concert party genre, as well as showing clearly how this material can be used to rethink a number of contemporary theoretical themes and issues." -- Karin Barber

Drawing on her participation as an actress in concert party performances, oral histories of performers, and archival research, Catherine M. Cole traces the history and development of Ghana's concert party tradition. Cole shows how concert parties combined an eclectic array of cultural influences, adapting characters and songs from American movies, popular British ballads, and local storytelling traditions into a spirited blend of comedy and social commentary.

A companion video, Stageshakers!, by Nathan Kwame Braun, brings the concert party to life for English-speaking audiences.

    Stage-Shakers! Ghana's Concert Party Theatre
    by Kwame Braun

A lively video documentary that brings Ghana's concert party theatre to life.

    Indiana University Press

For the first time, Western audiences have access to the power and intensity of Ghana's remarkable concert party theatre through Kwame Braun's 100-minute documentary video. Stage-Shakers! brings its festive atmosphere to life by showing backstage preparation - touring, making-up, and practicing - as well as live performance footage. Interviews with key performers, both pioneers and current practitioners, reveal the concert party as a dynamic form of entertainment that is in step with popular fashion, music, song, dance, and social issues. Researched and filmed in collaboration with Catherine M. Cole, this video companion is an important extension of her book, Ghana's Concert Party Theatre.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing short of superb.......2001-08-02

Cole's study of concert party, a traveling musical theater in Ghana, is nothing short of superb. Not only does she manage to show the history of these itinerant performers and the world they made and remade with every performance, but she uses her analysis of concert party as a way to talk about and problematize the theories and obsessions of our time that sometimes have overdetermined analyses of things African. That concert party performers imitated women, or wore blackface, all complicate our own academic ideas about the performance of gender, or of race, and how those might be different in Africa than in the US or Latin America. Cole's manuscript gives us a history of an African musical form in more detail than anything we have had before, and in so doing she gives us a history of class and culture in Ghana that I think will make a strong impact on African history. But it also challenges scholars to think anew about how to understand and interpret African cultural forms, and shows how limiting it isfor Africans and for academics to pidgeon-hole those cultural expressions into examples of buzz words and jargon. This is a book that doesn't just interrogate culture and pronounce it complicated. This is a book that looks the complications firmly in the eye and encourages them to stare right back. Cole animates the complexities and contradictions of popular African culture to make us think more seriously, more carefully, about how race and gender take on meanings and shed connotations in societies increasingly aware of their place in the world.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars full of errors, theory is pretty good though.......2006-08-20

Although to me some of the errors were obvious but for a beginner they might not be that obvious and you could get stuck with an error screen for hours and hours thinking YOU are wrong and the book is right, before finally discovering you need to adjust cause the book is just wrong.

they add four menu items for example, while in the image you see it are five. then in the code they work with five so you have to make the fifth one yourself and discover its name etc. Also they tell you to rename the buttons but in their code you can't follow anymore cause they didnt rename their own buttons.

This was just in chapter 1, the third day, which is the first real code writing lesson.

I can't understand why someone would give this book a five star rating. It's very confusing for a beginner with all the errors. But if you have a decent basis and you can easily discover the errors it might still be ok, but not highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars The difference between knowing, and being able to teach ..........2006-04-04

This might be the book for you, if:

      - you need a crash course in VS.Net,
      - you're pretty well-versed in Visual Basic 6.0
      - you're pretty good at filtering out irrelevant praise for the product
      - you are willing to skim through examples, getting the jist of things without actually trying to make them work
      - you can't find a more carefully-written crash-course book covering the same ground

Then again, if you're that good to begin with, you can probably learn VS.Net without a crash-course book.

2 out of 5 stars Cannot recommend this book.......2006-02-20

Unfortunately, the code examples in this book are fraught with careless errors. What's the point of picking up a book to learn VS .Net if the code examples don't work? Moreover, the author's claim (p.3) of a website featuring code samples, fixes, and other helpful materials to supplement the book is simply untrue. That website (http://www.vbasp.net) exists, but has nothing uploaded. I wasted many hours trying to get code examples to work before learning through Amazon.com Reviews that others have had the same problem. How disappointing.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2005-08-31

As other reviewers have pointed out, this book has a lot of mistakes in it. How sloppy does an author/publisher have to be to put out a beginner's book where many of the examples don't work? It's a lot easier and more effective to learn this material by using the documentation that comes with Visual Studio.

1 out of 5 stars Regrettably, it sucks........2004-12-21

I did not read the reviews before I bought this book on a friend's recommendation. I made a big mistake. The critics are right on target. This book needs major editing before it will be an aid to anyone. And while I've marked mine up and cannot therefore recover my $30, maybe I can save you yours.

Maybe if sales of this book die as a result of the reviews these publishers will think twice before rushing out so flawed a product. They should truly be embarrassed.
