Graaskamp on Real Estate.......2002-03-08
James A. Graaskamp was the quintessential thinker, renowned chairman of the University of Wisconsin's widely celebrated Department of Real Estate and Urban Land Economics ("The Program") and the foremost academic real estate leader of the past 25 years. Graaskamp on Real Estate, the first complete collection of academic treatises, unpublished materials, and class notes, was published by the Urban Land Institute as a tribute to "The Chief" shortly after his death in 1988. This "Landmark" should not be missed by anyone who aspires to understand real estate investment, profit centers and competitive advantage (i.e. "monopoly position"). All of Graaskamp's essential cast of characters are in this anthology...the risk manager ("pleasure, pain, and bailout"), the public policy problem solver (i.e. "tri-partite agreement creates cash solvency) and, of course, the fabled entrepreneurial genius. For Graaskamp's students and others who seek competitive advantage and need to stay on top of their game, this is simply the best book in its class.

Book Description
As the title indicates,
Essays in Honor of James A. Graaskamp: Ten
Years After, is a collection of essays written to honor Graaskamp's major contributions to the field of real estate education and practice over the course of three decades. Upon his death in 1988, the industry lost a major influence for advancing the real estate discipline, both as an academic field and a professional field. The authors in this volume seek to extend Graaskamp's contributions and move the real estate discipline forward. The papers address the challenges posed by the market to return our attention to real estate fundamentals, and to strike a proper balance between Main Street and Wall Street. The authors and editors hope that this book will influence the industry to incorporate many of Grasskamp's ideas into mainstream real estate education and practice.
Over the course of his career, Graaskamp made many noteworthy contributions to real estate theory and practice, ideas that if resurrected could offset some of the pressure in the industry to move away from market fundamentals. The authors try to capture the essence of Graaskamp's messages, and intend that the papers serve as a point of departure for discussing the future role and nature of real estate education.
Part I focuses on the major contributions to the real estate discipline made by Graaskamp and the Wisconsin Real Estate Program. Part II contains some personal recollections and photos of Graaskamp, and also a summary of the groups that make up the Wisconsin Real Estate Program, a major co-sponsor of this volume. The rest of the book's three main parts are structured around major topics that reflect the multidisciplinary nature of real estate as espoused by Graaskamp. Part III treats real estate feasibility and development, Part IV concentrates on real estate valuation, and Part V discusses institutional economics.

Book Description
The adventures - and misadventures - of a Pacific Northwest Boy Scout troop in the late 1930's create a story full of fun, nostalgia and inspiration. The troop built a great log lodge, traveled far and wide in an ancient bus, hiked with primitive equipment in the Olympic Mountain wilderness, won just about every competition in sight, and generated 50 Eagle Scouts. The book tells of a great time in a wonderful corner of our country and of building character for boys that carried them through World War II and into strong roles in building post-war America. Bill Gates, Sr., was an Eagle Scout in this troop.

Recommended.......2000-07-12
The author's vivid descriptions of the mountains and terrain, the weather and the trials and tribulations of hiking, camping, building log structures and the camaraderie of such an outstanding troop is nothing but masterful ! What the author has produced should be a legend for all those presently in scouting. I truly doubt that any other troop has ever been or will be as dedicated or productive as 511. Braman has really chronicled the true spirit of scouting in a way that will inspire future generations of scouts, even though I doubt that it will ever be equaled. Where "The Fuzzy Marmots Grow" is a work of art. This book was a pleasure to read, it captivates the reader and it's hard to put down. I certainly enjoyed it
Scouting as it was meant to be, FUN!.......1998-10-13
Very funny! Amazingly detailed memories. A great read-aloud for the whole family.
This book shines with nostalgia and humor........1998-10-09
This delightful memoir of boyhood is a chronicle of humor, nostalgia and charm. It's story-telling at its best. Unequivocally recommended to those who enjoy remembering, reliving, the spirit of youth - when the miracle of adventure was an everyday occurrence. Lovingly conceived, deftly written.
Delightful--a story to savour and share........1998-10-03
James Braman's book is a delightful, charmingly-told story about Boy Scout Troop 511 of Bremerton, Washington. The boys' rollicking adventures as they explore the wilds of the Northwest and venture forth in their ancient Fageol bus to view the wonders of Grand Coulee Dam are thoroughly entertaining. At the same time, the book subtly provides a recipe for building character and a foundation for success in life--simply bring together strong, caring leaders and eager, adventurous youth, and the effect can be powerful and lasting! Where the Fuzzy Marmots Grow is an enjoyable read for everyone--from preteens to grandparents.. Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
A melodrama, not a swashbuckling adventure.......2007-07-03
The book is a melodrama. The first part consists of the main character wanting to marry a 17 year old girl but her brother objects. Lots of talking. Very little action. A duel is almost literally described as "in a few minutes it was over". The second part consists of a woman urging her husband to dislike the main character. Scene after seen of this.
If you just read the plot it reads like a swashbuckling adventure. But the book expands the drama scenes and barely mentions any action. It is well written if you like melodrama. The characters are not all that deep but they are well written and distinct.
Escape Into Fascinating Characters.......2007-04-19
"Captain Blood" is adventurism with lots of action and good character studies. "The Sea Hawk" is also adventure but with far less action and more fascinating character studies. Sabatini invents intriquing thought processes for the leading characters that lead to the unexpected . He is almost as good as Tolstoy in opening up heads. The translation is excellent as the words just flow making it difficult to put the book down.
Action from cover to cover.......2005-03-17
I find it hard at times to pick up novels written a century ago or so, the language can be archaic, the pace a little slow... Not so this novel. It amazed me how quickly I could adapt to Sir Oliver and his world. The heroes were larger than life, the villains deliciously captivating. I found it incredibly hard to put down. It's just nice to read about a hero that stands for something, a person true to their beliefs. Purists would say Sabatini relies on coincidence to move his plot forward, but the world he creates makes it all believable. If you are hesitant about reading the prose of classic swashbuckling literature, read the first three chapters, I guarantee you'll be hooked ;)
No Superficial Linguistic Dust Here.......2005-01-21
Having recently read several modern novels by contemporary authors, I was transported by THE SEA-HAWK back in time to an earlier style of writing and a distinctly different use of language. How many books, for instance, have you read lately that use the verb "trepan" very frequently? Didn't think so.
Having found modern authors' use of language to be pretty bland and, in a few instances, actually to violate grammatical convention, I was thrilled to encounter Sabatini's 1915 novel with its beautiful, effective use of the language. For a lad born and educated in Europe, Sabatini wrote in English with a felicity that usually eludes native-born American writers, and, dare I say, quite a few British authors, too. Thinking of the modern American authors I have read lately, I can say with pleasure that reading Sabatini is like taking a fresh, invigorating intellectual shower and thoroughly ridding oneself of the superficial linguistic dust lingering from their various works.
Of course, there is far more to THE SEA-HAWK than its sparkling use of language. Sir Oliver, or, to use his Muslim name, Sakr-el-Bhar, is a complex character who responds to his changing fortunes as a real person who wishes to survive and even prosper, yet who retains his dignity in the face of undeserved adversities that could have easily crushed a lesser man. The plot is truly gripping, and the reader eagerly pursues the story to learn what will befall Sir Oliver next and whether he can somehow extricate himself from this new quandary and perhaps even turn the situation to his advantage.
All is believable. The settings in which the plot unfolds are exotic but realistic. Though he knows it is fiction, the reader can easily accept the reality of the setting, the characters, and the action. While certain fortuitous coincidences do occur from time to time, no miraculous escapes or incredible rescues are foisted upon the hapless reader. Nothing untoward jars him from his vicarious participation in this great adventure.
Enjoy THE SEA-HAWK for its wonderful use of language. Enjoy it for the variety and depth of its characters. Enjoy it as a swashbuckling adventure on the high seas. (One simply cannot write about Sabatini without using the word "swashbuckling" at least once.) Enjoy it for the reality of its settings and events. There are critics who say that THE SEA-HAWK does not reach quite the same degree of excellence as do some of Sabatini's other novels, such as CAPTAIN BLOOD and SCARAMOUCHE. However, I beg to disagree with them. If you have enjoyed any of Sabatini's other novels, do not hesitate to read this one, for it is equally enjoyable. If you are coming to Sabatini for the first time, you will find THE SEA-HAWK to be a fascinating introduction to his work, and you will be as motivated as I to follow it with several of his other novels. Once begun, Sabatini is habit-forming!
Marvelous.......2004-06-17
I hate to be another person to write a glowing review of "The Sea Hawk," but I can't help myself. Sabatini is one of my favorite authors, and this is one of my favorite books by him. It's the sweeping saga of an English gentleman's transformation into a Muslim pirate circa 1590, and its themes of family betrayal, religious revenge, and tormented love are worthy of a Verdi opera. Sir Oliver and Rosamond are familiar Sabatini character types, but I personally feel they have more depth and vitality here than, say, the leads in "Captain Blood."
"Hawk" does have a few problems though, shared by other books in the Sabatini canon. Like "Scaramouche," there's the slightly awkward three act structure. "Hawk" gets off to an exciting start, then bogs down a bit when it introduces the North African setting and the Muslim characters, and in Act 3 finally careens to a terrific and breathless finish. Also, as another reviewer pointed out, the Muslim characters, especially compared to their English counterparts, are not particularly convincing. In fact, their overly stilted and archaic dialogue bears an amusing resemblance to the historical speechifying satirized by Thackeray in his 1850 burlesque "Rebecca and Rowena." But all in all, these are minor complaints. "The Sea Hawk" is a ripping read by one of the 20th century's masters of historical fiction.
From beginning to end, "The Sea Hawk" is also irresistably cinematic, from the initial descriptions of Sir Oliver's mansion to the final shipboard embrace. However I don't expect that this will be remade into a movie any time soon, given today's political climate. I read this shortly after the Madrid bombings, and it was decidedly unsettling reading about a Western guy who converts to Islam and takes up a jihad against the wicked Spanish. Yes, times have certainly changed since "Hawk" was written in 1915. One wonders what Sabatini would make of John Walker Lindh...

Customer Reviews:
Good Book- Poorly Written.......2001-03-20
Having read most of the books available on WWII PT Boats, I find this work full of factual and biographical material, but alas, very poorly written. I would wonder how the publisher let this text material reach the publication stage without some severe editing and/or rewriting.
PT boats are a great subject for memoirs, but..........1999-11-16
One of the most neglected aspects of World War II combat was the service of the shallow water hunters, the PT boats. These small warships, the most heavily armed for their size in the war, and their brave crews did some pretty extraordinary things. This memoir by a boat commander and later squadron commander could have benefited from some editing. Not for errors necessarily, after all the events recounted occurred 50 plus years ago, but to clean up the writing. The author repeats himself and it almost seems that he was thinking that he would be paid by the word. The style itself is bombastic and full of braggadocio in places, but is frequently leavened with rather straight-forward recitations of brave events. The author too recounts his amorous exploits, thankfully not in too much detail as that really would be bragging, and that detracts somewhat. Makes you wonder what the sailors were doing while the officers squired the nurses around... All told, this is a fairly good read and has the advantage of being written by someone who actually rode the boats into battle.
Great Read!.......1999-07-20
Great summer reading. This whopping tale of one mans service in the PT boats is great history and adventure. There are awkward bits but all in all I think this adds a key element to the PT story!

Book Description
This 1940 swashbuckler is one of the best examples of the old Hollywood studio system at work. Scholars and film buffs will learn much about collaborative filmmaking on an exceptionally large scale as Rudy Behlmer traces step-by-step the evolution of The Sea Hawk. The very anti-thesis of an auteur film, The Sea Hawk illustrates the ways in which creative input from just about everyone on the Warner Brothers lot—producers, writers, art directors, director, cameraman, special effects team, editor and composer-conductor—resulted in a film in the familiar Warners house style.
This book includes the complete screenplay.

Book Description
In 1936, a 20-year-old artist using the name Willis B. Rensie jump-started the comic-book medium. Writing and illustrating an action-packed weekly serial called Hawks of the Seas-a pirate adventure series set in the 18th-century Caribbean-the artist created one dynamic strip after another, honing his storytelling craft and shaping the comics medium with each one. That artist was none other than comics grand master Will Eisner! From 1936 to 1938, Eisner's Hawks of the Seas weekly stories were translated into several different languages and distributed all over the world, and now they're collected here in this handsome hardcover edition. The stories themselves stand the test of time, as thrilling and exciting as they were almost 70 years ago. Featuring an introduction by comics veteran Al Williamson and a new foreword by Eisner himself.

Customer Reviews:
One of a handful of fan analyses I turn to.......2003-09-11
I disagree with the two earlier reviews - they are probably from a single person who didn't like the book or perhaps did not understand the theories which underpin the evidence and stories presented in the chapters. The theoretical support of the book is quite cross-disciplinary and the areas described by the contributors cover a wide range of fan behaviors and phenomena. That could lead to a sense that the book isn't cohesive, if the reader is not careful to note the "throughlines" between the pieces. Remember that fan lit is still a relatively new area and solid theoretical categories in which to place all observations of fan behavior have yet to be established. Perhaps they never will. I have been reading *everything* available in the fan literature area for the past year and this one remains a book I keep turning to, along with my copies of Jenkins, Camille Bacon-Smith, and Lisa Lewis. These are foundational, even though some do not even address internet fan culture. This one does, however, to its credit.
Good introduction to the topic, lots of information.......2003-09-10
This is a good all around book to learn about fan fiction culture.
Superficial.......2002-12-27
This book was obviously dashed together in a hurry. The authors' assorted essays--the book bears little evidence of editorial cohesion--are of middling to poor quality, and the conclusions are generally facile.
superficial.......2002-12-21
This "pop research" book shows all the signs of having been written over one or two weekends by a bunch of friends who could not take the time to read each others' contributions. The conclusions are as facile as the methodology.

"Complete" means COMPLETE.......2000-04-03
This book is an outstanding resource for anyone with even a passing interest in Car Wars. It combines all vehicle body types (including cars, bikes, tanks, helicopters and airplanes!) as well as the equipment and weaponry from all previously published material. In college, I bought 2 copies -- one for me and one to circulate around my gaming group. This book contains equipment for those who prefer the classic slugfest, but also stealth, sound-systems and sound enhancement systems useful for ROLE-PLAYING.
As a side note, for anyone who plays other RPGs but needs good vehicle combat rules, give Car Wars a try. The vehicle combat rules are quick and clean. In the early 90s, there were even groups adapting Car Wars vehicle construction for use in GURPS and Shadowrun.
If you like Car Wars (or just need some good vehicle construction rules) get this book.
