        5 out of 5 stars A Tarantula Ranch!! BWHAHAHAHA!!!.......2001-09-06

This is such a funny book which can be enjoyed without having read the previous book in the series (but it helps, plus, the first Duncan & Mallory book is very VERY funny as well)

Most of the notables return for this installment (plus one extra returning in another role, there's a hillarious bit about that early on) and are thrown together at, of all places, a tarantula ranch. Once again Robert Aspirin's prose and Mel White's artwork are wonderful and make this book and absolute riot. Highly recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2001-04-28

I picked this up along with the first book in the series for a dollar apiece at a closing out sale about 8 or 9 years ago. One of the funniest graphic novels I've ever read. The irreverant humor and hilarous drawings make it a real treat. I've heard that Robert Asprin and Melanie White had issues with the publisher, and only recently got the rights to the characters back. Ms. White is supposedly working on a new book in the series, so hopefully there will be more!

Writing and art should always be this much fun. Duncan and Mallory are a hoot, almost deveelishly clever...well, at least Mallory is...well, he is when he's not running in terror from...well, you're just going to have to read it to find out. This series is as amusing as the Myth Adventures graphic series. If you're looking for a good laugh with a few good chuckles and snickers thrown in, this is the book to read.

        5 out of 5 stars So clever.......2001-09-06

I love this book. I found it completely by accident at a used bookstore and immediately fell in love with it. The humor is pure Robert Aspirin (of the Myth Adventures series) and Mel White's illustrations are the perfect complement to the humor. (Trivia note: the two con artists in the book are modeled after Mr. Asprirn and Ms. White) In-jokes abound in both the text and the artwork: keep checking the backgrounds if you don't believe me.

And just to clarify an earlier reviewer's comment, Mallory is most definately a dragon. A small blue dragon. He comes from a family of dragons; this is a plot point.

I'm afraid to say much more for fear of spoiling it for new readers. In short, if you can find it, GET IT!

5 out of 5 stars Oops (was Nit).......2001-08-25

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent stuff!.......2001-08-24

First. Duncan and Mallory is hilarious, lavishly illustrated in the best comic style, reminiscent of Foglio. Who's stealing styles from who here? It's generally a good read. Like most full-color graphic novels, it's too flaming short -- about fourty double-sided sheets, if I recall correctly. It makes a great coffee-table book, even though it's paperback (8.5" x 11") -- people pick it up, start thumbing through (USE THE GLOVES!! USE THE GLOVES!!) and start laughing. If you buy it, buy the sequels the same day. My promise to you... you will read all three within two hours and laugh yourself breathless repeatedly. --Phil

5 out of 5 stars Before DragonHeart, there was Duncan & Mallory.......1998-04-30

Duncan & Mallory is the offspring of Robert Asprin's hilarious Myth Adventures, and Fan Artist Mel White's equally funny imagination. The story revolves around Duncan, a hapless adventurer and Mallory, a machiavellian, vegetarian dragon who is also an outcast. With Mallories 'Guidance' they get into many predicaments that still bring a chuckle today. If you like Asprin's work, his brand of humor abounds here. White's work is remeniscent of Phil Foglio's but retains a zany originality of it's own. If you want to read one of the funniest graphic novels of the early 90's, THIS is the one to get. 10 turnips!

            Book Description

In this little book a fictitious authority on stone-age education presents a series of lectures satirizing educators and education. Professor Peddiwell reports that the three fundamentals taught to youngsters in the paleolithic curriculum were (1) fish-grabbing-with-the-bare-hands, (2) horse-clubbing, and (3) saber-tooth-tiger-scaring-with-fire. When fish became too agile to catch with the bare hands and horses and tigers disappeared, schools nevertheless went on teaching the old fundamentals for their cultural value. The eventual revolt of the progressive educators against traditional curriculum is described in one of the most entertaining passages in this amusing satire.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book Regarding Education!!!.......2007-06-11

This is an interesting book regarding the process of education. It was required reading for a class I took entitled "educational philosophy." There is a lot packed into this book regarding educational philosophy and academia. It is funny to read and very enjoyable. I had to laugh out loud at several spots in the book. The main characters are a professor and one of his former students having a dialogue in a bar in Tijuana while enjoying their tequila shots. The storyline is very unique and innovative.

Another great book to read is "Trilogy Moments for the Mind, Body and Soul." This book introduces the new "Epulaeryu" poetic form, and it's also filled with great inspirational poems to stimulate the mind, body and soul.

5 out of 5 stars Good read with poignant undertones........2002-05-14

If you are looking for a fun and interesting commentary on the "evolution" of our current educational system, you will enjoy this book. It is tongue in cheek while hitting the mark about trends in the educational system. This book comments on everything from religion to marriage to economics to afterschool programs.

The characters Wayne and Peddiwell are wonderful, especially after they down several tequila daisies.

            5 out of 5 stars Don't let the 1959 date fool you........2001-10-20

Don't let the 1959 date fool you. Or the reference to curriculum. We have yet to learn and employ the lessons this book provides in education, in the military, in the analysis of clinical trials, and in socal policy. (Aren't we about to build a multi-trillion dollar missile system to keep out knife-wielding terrorists?)

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on education!.......1998-08-05

Paleolithic education will still be fashionable in the 21st century if educators of today are not going to do some reflections.

5 out of 5 stars Witty, Caustic, and Creative Indictment of Academia.......1997-09-12

This book is in the form of a narrative dialogue between a professor and a former student in a Tijuana bar over the course of a few days. This bar in Tijuanna is the last place the former student (now a failing salesman) expected to find the straight-laced processor slamming tequilla shots and lecturing on the "History of Paleothic Education". The professor's lectures explore the reasons why the education system, generally, and academia, specifically, have failed to innovate and evolve, by spinning an allegorical tale of the history of the educational curriculum in a paleolithic tribe. Funny, witty, entertaining, and a very fast read (I read it in around 3 hours), this book is a must read not only for those in academia, but for anyone that had, or has, to do dogmatic, antiquated, and non-sensical tasks in their school and/or workplace. A true gem

            Book Description

The 65th-anniversary edition of an educational classic proves its relevance in examining today's educational quandaries

McGraw-Hill first published The Saber- Tooth Curriculum in 1939, and it has remained a classic bestseller to this date. The book is just as relevant and applicable to the key questions in education today as it was when it was first published.

With tongue firmly in cheek, Peddiwell takes on the contradictions and confusion generated by conflicting philosophies of education, outlining the patterns and progression of education itself, from its origins at the dawn of time to its culmination in a ritualistic, deeply entrenched social institution with rigidly prescribed norms and procedures.

This fascinating exploration is developed within a fanciful framework of fictional lectures, given by Professor J. Abner Peddiwell, doyen in the History of Education at Petaluma State College. In a humorous fable, Peddiwell illustrates the progress of education and give valuable insights into how it could continue to develop in the decades to come.

I doubt THE SABER-TOOTH CURRICULUM would be produced today, a sad commentary on our times. No contemporary publisher would distribute the first edition to educators for the sake of discourse and no doubt a little shrewd marketing like McGraw did in the late 1930s, and no pointed but whimsical and very funny satire on pedagogical history in the age of theory rendered in opaque language would get very far. What is a better commentary on our times is that this wonderful book is still in print and still venerated despite the trouble it would have in getting born now.

A thumbnail sketch: a man, Raymond Wayne, the putative author (actually, the real author is Harold Raymond Wayne Benjamin, who died in 1969 and is still admired as an educational thinker), is in a bar in Tijuana, knocking back tequila daisies when he runs into his old professor, J. Abner Peddiwell, Ph.d., who, with considerable help from the daisies, agrees to embark on a seminar illustrating the history and issues of pedagogy. His witty example is told through the story of the cave man who first decided that children needed to learn the essentials of fish-grabbing, little horse clubbing and tiger-scaring. Out of this grows a complex system that includes teacher accreditation, higher education, Ph.D. programs, progressive theory, conservative theory, teacher unions, the rise of phys ed. and the question that never goes away, do we teach children how to think or what to think?

It is enlightening to read how fresh the issues are nearly 70 years later. One only wonders what hay Benjamin would make with the likes of today's educational soup of politics, law, economics and the headlining controversies that plague the profession.

                            Book Description

Comic Visions by David Marc is the most influential critical history of American television comedy. This Second Edition updates the subject matter and takes into account how new technology, especially cable TV, has affected this popular form of home entertainment.Marc examines the roots of television comedy beginning with the influence of Vaudeville, cinema and radio on the variety shows and sitcoms of the 1940's and 1950's. He then moves into television's response to the turbulent 1960's and the great expansion of situational comedy popular in the 1970's. A completely new chapter looks at recent developments such as Comedy Central and the proliferation of stand-up comedy and also includes an engaging analysis of why shows like Seinfeld and The Simpsons are such major hits in the 1990s.Witty, lucid, and engaging, Marc combines historical research with cultural analysis to provide a study of television comedy that is deeply rooted in the diversity in American society.

4 out of 5 stars analytical, insightful and entertaining.......2003-03-11

This is an excellent psychological, socio-historical overview and analysis of the behind-the-scenes casting and creation of many famous and not-so-famous sitcoms, that is not overly academic in style, but is in-depth in analysis, i.e., this book is for all levels of comprehension. An added bonus is the funny commentary and musings that the author adds (Bill Bixby is a "low-rent Alan Alda" etc.,A shortcoming though is the little analysis of big sitcoms like the Jeffersons and Seinfeld. The Last chapter especially needed more information on sitcoms of the 1990s. Overall a fantastic read, and David Marc is really nice and answers your email questions promptly.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Unique Vision.......2002-02-20

Marc has a unique vision of American situation comedy. He sees it through the lens of classical criticism, seeking themes, genres, and other Greek-sounding nouns. He places American sitcoms in historical contexts. He does all of this so brilliantly and in such a readable yet erudite manner that a reader familiar with both "Bewitched" and "Beowulf" will find the book a treasure. I have never found a better book about American comedy in the post World War II era. So much of that comedy was televised that David Marc owns the patent on its intelligent criticism with this book.

Susie Bright celebrates the first amendment, lesbianism, single motherhood and fantasizes an eventful night with Dan Quayle in this uninhibited and quirky collection of essays, articles and book reviews written over the past few years. Offbeat and sexy, Bright defends Madonna, attacks Dr. Ruth and is snubbed by Camille Paglia herself in this rather amazing and outspoken collection. Bright is gay and proud of it and considers herself a serious and first-rate pornographer. She gets into endless trouble with right-wingers and kicks and screams her way out of it thoughout these pages. Witty, fearless and thought-provoking.

Ah, the delectable Susie Bright. This book, though several years old, is fabulous. In it, Ms. Bright cunningly explores several themes and individuals with wit and intelligence. Her description of a discussion she had with adult film (and I do mean film) director Andrew Blake on her dislike of his lack of realism in his films' lesbian scenes is right on. Another great tale is her fantasy involving Dan Quayle. Yes, that's right, J. Danforth himself is lucky enough to have been the subject of one of Ms. Bright's sexual fantasies, or, at least, she will have us think so.

As is true of all of her books, Sexwise by Susie Bright is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Takes a Broad Subject and Does It Well.......2006-04-18

Once upon a time, computers came with big, thick, intimidating manuals filled with every bit of arcane knowledge the designers thought that the user would need. Nobody ever read them, partly because of their size, but mainly because it was tedious, time-consuming work to sift throught the manual to try to find the answer you actually needed.

Eventually, manufacturers stopped making these massive manuals - instead, they printed up short "quick-start guides" to get people started. Unfortunately, these guides served much the same purpose as detour signs do in road construction. They take you just far enough to get you lost and then leave you there with no clue what to do next. Readers end up like drivers: lost, confused, and frustrated.

PCs: The Missing Manual is designed to change that. This book, like each of the other Missing Manuals books, gives users a base of knowledge to build on. Unlike those early computer manuals, the book does it in a way that people can understand and follow, and it doesn't just drop you off in the middle of nowhere. Also unlike the early manuals, it goes beyond the PC itself and covers many popular peripherals and accessories - including scanners, digital cameras, and MP3 players.

When writing a book like this, covering such a broad topic as PCs in general, it's easy to go into information overload. That's something that Rathbone manages to avoid, mainly by offering a lot of content online through O'Reilly's Missing CD web site.

The most valuable resources in the book are the troubleshooting guides. Printer troubles, camera problems, even network difficulties are covered and in enough detail that the average user can solve the most common problems quickly and easily. There's also a section covering security and maintenance, including combating spyware and phishing schemes.

PCs: The Missing Manual is basic enough that average computer users can read it and make good use of it. If you are looking for something that will teach you details about modifying and upgrading your system, this isn't the book for you - you'll want to get a different O'Reilly book - Repairing and Upgrading Your PC (review forthcoming).

I don't know about you folks out there, but I would never even dream of opening up the computer case. Frankly, I wouldn't even know where to begin. And I am not a novice at fixing "stuff". I could change a washer, and simple electrical things like changing a light bulb (grin), but certainly not anything within the CPU. I was so timid about it and I became so anxious that I had to leave the room when anything had to be done to my computer.

Thank the good Lord,-- O'Reilly Press, Publisher, and Andy Rathbone, collaborated and has finally put together a book that I can read and understand. My normal instincts are to dive straight into a new application and play with it, and it is only when I get stuck that I finally get down to brass tacks and read the instructions and/or the manual. When it comes to my CPU, I decided that I had to have some better information before I attempt anything, and this book is what gave me the courage to do "battle" on my own.
