          Book Description

The Closing Door is the first major critique of the effect of conservative policies on urban race and poverty in the 1980s. Atlanta, with its booming economy, strong elected black leadership, and many highly educated blacks, seemed to be the perfect site for those policies and market solutions to prove themselves. Unfortunately, not only did expected economic opportunity fail to materialize but many of the hard-won gains of the civil rights movement were lost. Orfield and Ashkinaze painstakingly analyze the evidence from Atlanta to show why black opportunity deteriorated over the 1980s and outline possible remedies for the damage inflicted by the Reagan and Bush administrations.

"The Closing Door is a crucial breath of fresh air . . . an important and timely text which will help to alter the 'underclass' debate in favor of reconsidering race-specific policies. Orfield and Ashkinaze construct a convincing argument with which those who favor 'race-neutrality' will have to contend. In readable prose they make a compelling case that economic growth is not enough."—Preston H. Smith II, Transition

            Book Description

In 1993, the author set out to try and gain some understanding about school and community in Havens, New Mexico--a place where she had the opportunity to be immersed in border culture, where she could learn how the border figured into everyday life, and where she could pay uninterrupted attention to the issues as they occurred in the personal and professional lives of those who taught in and administered the schools--and in the lives of the students who studied there. This book offers an interpretation that is disciplined by the long hours, days, and months spent in Havens, and by the personal stance the author brings to the study of a place and its people.

This book tells the story of Havens from the perspective of what it is, of the present in all of its complexity, and as a window on what might exist in the future in this border community. It begins with a description of Havens and its inevitable interdependence with its Mexican neighbors, followed by an introduction of three "cultural mediators"--two students and one teacher from Havens High School. Focusing on the relationship between the use of Spanish and English, the language landscape in the community and in the schools is laid out. This is followed by a specific description of the development of bilingual education programs in the district, and an introduction of the social structure of the high school, describing the students' interactions across cultural lines. The final chapter presents an alternative metaphor for thinking about the border and identifies markers of opportunity that already exist in Havens as it works toward defining what it means to be a bicultural and binational community.

              Book Description

Valley of Opportunity recreates an age when Indians, colonists, and post-Revolutionary settlers embraced a similar dream: to create a successful economy in the rural hinterland of the middle colonies.

Peter Mancall offers connections between the development of a particular region, previously overlooked by most historians, and the wide pattern of American economic change. Integrating a range of disciplines, from anthropology through ecology and geography to zoology, he seeks to answer the questions: what did different groups of people make of the natural resources of this river valley and how did they allocate the rewards? His answers provide a novel overview of the economic culture of eighteenth-century America.

Twelve-year-old Colin knows little about his father except that he must have fought in the war. His mother, totally absorbed by the nightclub where she works, says nothing about him, and Colin turns to films for images of what his father might have been. Weaving in and out of Colin's real life, his imagined film explores issues of loyalty and betrayal and searches for the answer to the question 'What is a man?'

Pat Barker's novel "The Man Who Wasn't There" is set in Britain in the bleak years following WWII. The protagonist is a lonely twelve-year-old boy named Colin Harper who lives with his mother, Viv. While the identity of Colin's father remains unknown, Viv, a waitress in a seedy nightclub, drops hints that are eagerly picked over and stored for future reference by Colin.

After passing his 11-plus examination, Colin attends a secondary school where he is socially out-of-place. He drifts in and out of an imaginary world, creating scenarios that cast him in the role of a WWII resistance hero. This imaginary world is becoming increasingly attractive to Colin, and consequently, he's drifting farther from reality. Unfortunately, no one seems to notice this. His mother is too disinterested to even sign his report card, and Colin's only friend is a much older ex-con turned zookeeper.

This slight novel marks Colin's mental shifts into the imaginary realm by including the scenes running through Colin's head. These scenes are written in the fashion of a script--with the stage setting and directions written in italics, and followed by the various spoken roles. Colin has the tendency to flip into imaginative reverie when he's got nothing else to do, or when he's distressed. For example, when he witnesses a scene of bullying taking place at school, he immediately leaps (in his mind) into an interrogation scene.

Colin's life is interesting and full of fascinating characters--a psychic for example--who can't always predict when she'll have second sight and has to improvise. While there is some good stuff in this well-structured book, Colin's imaginative world is triggered frequently, and consequently, a great deal of the book is spent on these spy/resistance fantasies which are distracting and not nearly as interesting as Colin's real life. While the fantasies reveal various psychological qualities that would otherwise remain buried, nonetheless, this device distracts from the story and doesn't really offer much in return for their constant presence--displacedhuman

From the creators of Fargo and O Brother, Where Art Thou?

From the Coen brothers, "two of our most dependably provocative filmmakers" (Mike Clark, USA Today), comes a darkly funny thriller that harkens back to their earlier classics such as Blood Simple, Miller's Crossing, and Barton Fink.
Set in 1950s California, the film stars Billy Bob Thornton as Ed, a mild-mannered barber whose wife, Doris (Frances McDormand), is having an affair with her department store boss, Big Dave. Although Ed is initially apathetic about his wife's adultery, his life is turned upside down when one of his customers tells him about "the biggest business opportunity since Henry Ford"-dry cleaning-and he decides to blackmail Big Dave for the venture capital to start a chain. From there things go horribly wrong: Dave discovers Ed's identity as the blackmailer and tries to strangle Ed, who winds up killing Dave in self-defense, yet, ironically, it's Doris who the police arrest for the murder. As Ed tries to figure out what to do next his world begins to unravel, piece by piece.
Full of the same kind of slow-burn character studies, biting humor, and pitch-perfect dialogue that their fans have come to love, the Coen brothers' latest film is sure to take a place among their finest work.

4 out of 5 stars The Coen Brothers are at it again!.......2004-11-30

If you like the Coen Brothers (Barton Fink), Alfred Hitchcock, and Rod Serling then you will love this movie. Be prepared to sit back and relax. If you are already tense, this won't help you relax because you will be waiting for things to happen with a movie that shuffles as slowly as Prissy. Don't think I didn't like it because I did...laughed out loud at least 3 or 4 times, but I laughed AT the movie, not with it. If you like weird movies you will love this. I loved it even though it is a little weird. Pure Coen/Hitchcock/Serling!

5 out of 5 stars The Editor Who Wasn't There.......2002-01-12

This latest tale from the Coen Brothers is a perfectly realized portrait of modern man's plight as just another gear in the hair-cutting machine. Dread and laughs abound, in equal measure. And, by the way, Roderick Jaynes, the film editor who introduces the screenplay, doesn't actually exist. Whenever the Coens edit one of their movies themselves, they use "Jaynes" as a pseudonym.

4 out of 5 stars Another Solid Script.......2001-11-23

Even in their less succesful films, the Coen brothers never fail to deliver something interesting. TMWWT-their latest film, and areturn to the neo-noir territory of Blood Simple-is no exception. Even though it goes slightly off the rails in the last twenty minutes, the film is full of the entertaining oddballs one expects from them. The book is the shooting script, which upon first read doesn't appear to have any deviations from the finished film, along with a three page introduction by their film editor, Roderick Jaynes, in which he discusses the genesis of the title. Good reading for aspiring screen (and other) writers.

                                        3 out of 5 stars A decent thriller.......2003-07-15

Rex Carnaby, the famous actor, gets on a plane and, as is his habit, he adopts a fictional persona for his conversation with fellow passengers. This time he is Frederick Jackson Carnaby, the actor's twin brother, a wild animal dealer visiting Washington from Kenya. There's nothing unusual about Rex's flight or his performance as Frederick, but the next morning Rex finds a picture of himself in the obituaries. The fictional Frederick Jackson Carnaby, it seems, has met his death en route from Washington to London.

The report of Frederick's death is the first in a series of events orchestrated by a certain "Follensbee"--we find out the mastermind's true identity only near the book's end--who is trying to drive Rex mad. In the weeks following the appearance of the obituary, Rex is haunted by voices in his house, by the creeping suspicion, cleverly planted by his tormentor, that he killed his own father as a child, and by the unwelcome attentions of a new member of his therapy group. Follensbee's reasons for persecuting Rex are not clear until his plot is finally revealed, but we do know that he intends for Rex, in his madness, to murder his own young son--the only full-blooded relative he has. As Rex's sanity unravels--rather too quickly--according to plan, it seems inevitable that he will act out the scenario Follensbee has conceived.

The plan of attack Follensbee has devised is indeed ingenious, though it depends on the assumption that a man driven to a state of "primal madness" must necessarily commit the primal crime, the murder of a family member. This assumption of the inevitability of Rex's murder once he is driven mad, however, is difficult to accept, and so one cannot be quite swept away by the book's plot. The Man who Wasn't There is nevertheless a decent, quick read that will keep you guessing, if not wide-eyed and glued to your seat.

"The Man Who Wasn't There" was an enjoyable ride into the depths of the human mind with all its ups and downs, and ins and outs. This story takes you to a place you can't help wanting to go while at the same time you know you shouldn't be there. It was good, clean mystery, mayham, and MacLeish.

                                              Book Description

                                              - The only book written for undergraduates about the social construction of reality that is also historical and comparative. In addition, it includes chapters on the social construction of time and space, as well as the more traditional chapters on race, class, and gender.

                                              - This book shows how these social constructions of time, space, race, gender and class intersect with each other to produce particular social phenomena that are enduring and significant for our society. No other book for undergraduate teaching has ever done this … this is a real first!

"If the goal of this series is to broaden the students'' vision, no book is more ambitious toward attaining that goal than Making Societies. Roy helps students question the most ''natural'' of categories: time, space, gender, race, and class. Leading them through examples drawn from around the world, he shows how these categories are social constructions; historically formed, ideologically loaded, and subject to change. This may be profoundly unsettling, for students will be encouraged to question not only what they know but also the conceptual frameworks they use when they claim to understand anything. As Series Editors, it is our belief that this provocation will open new ways of thinking about the social world, how it is, and how it might be."

--Wendy Griswold, Series Editor, Northwestern University, from the foreword

"I love the organizing concept of the social construction of reality and using a cross-cultural historical comparative approach to analyzing key themes: space, time, race, gender, and class. I particularly like the focus on space and time first because it illustrates how deeply embedded the social construction of reality is."

--Joanne Defiore, University of Washington, Bothel

"The book is intellectually strong; it is driven by ideas and engages important processes of social life."

This is an updated edition of Sybex's lab manual for the A+ certification sponsored by CompTIA (Computing Technology Industry Association). A+ certifies the competency of service technicians in the computer industry. Revised exams are due out Q4 of this year. A+ candidates must pass two exams—Core Hardware and Operating System Technologies. The new hardware exam will cover latest memory, bus, peripheral & wireless technology and the new O/S exam will include added coverage of Windows Me & XP.

                                                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good labs, but could use more........2003-09-30

Having taught the new Comptia A+ exam twice already and I am beginning a new class soon, I was amazed atht heamount of information you have to retain to pass. I was also amazed at how books are beiung released for the new exams with any exercises to work with.

This lab manual has over 50 labs designed to breakdown the objectives of the ew exam and cover the topics. The labs do require that you have several peices of hardware and software avialable, so I think that this is a perfect companion for any school.

The labs for the hardware side are very good, I think that there could be more, but you should have enough for the exam. On the OS side, there needs to be labs covering all the operating systems, 95, 98, ME, NT workstation, 2000 & XP professional.

The book is a great companion for the Sybex A+ Study Guide Deluxe Edtion and overall a few updates and additions and this is the go to manual.
