Comprehensive, clear and pleasurable book on a complex topic.......1999-07-06
This is by far the best book on Hong Kong taxation I have ever come across. It is presented in a clear and readable format suitable for study and as a professional reference. As a tax professional, and having followed this book since 1994-95 to the present 1998-99, I have found Hong Kong Taxation: Law and Practice to be much like a fine wine, improves with age. The revised chapters now have unsurpassed clarity in explaining the complex issues such as source of profits and the effects of changing legislation and case law on Hong Kong Taxation. David Smith, the current bearer of the torch, has applied his clever writing style to the book and annually updated the book to include the latest changes in case law and legislation as well as recently adding two new chapters on Stamp Duty and Estate Duty to make this a comprehensive reference on all Hong Kong tax ideal for both the tax professional and student. What keeps me coming back to Hong Kong Taxation: Law and Practice year after year is that it is updated annually, Smith and to a lesser extent now, Flux, have a clear writing style aimed at the tax professional (cases are described in just enough detail for the reader to understand, but not so much that the point is lost - emphasis on quality not quantity), changes from year to year are clearly highlighted, and new concepts/changes in legislation are explained clearly and with detailed examples. Lastly, what makes this book very credible is David Smith is an active and prominent member of the Hong Kong tax community respected by his peers and colleagues for his keen insights into all aspects of tax. Hong Kong Taxation: Law and Practice and the Davids actually make tax a pleasurable read!

A reliable reference on the subject of Hong Kong taxation........1997-10-04
The best part is that this book is updated by KPMG Peat Marwick annually to incorporate the latest changes in Hong Kong legislation, even after Mr. Flux's retirement. It is a useful guide for novices as well as professionals. I have been using it as a reference manual for 12 years.

Hoping to further the manga-anime craze, Takezou sets up a sister shop in the United States. Watch as this zany new bunch of cute otaku girls match wits with other fans in this humorous and offbeat romp through the world of Japanese fandom!
Customer Reviews:
Junk Volume 3 (Junk).......2007-10-03
This manga is similar to the Guyver, however there is a twist. The twist is the fact that the main character faces the decision of how he wants to use his new ability. Unlike other stories, where it is determined that the main character uses their powers for good. This manga is worth the investment and is very intriguing.
RIVAL MANGA CLUBS.......2006-03-22
Shinano's all-girl school prepares for a shock as it merges with an all-boys high school. Even as female students have visions in their minds of yaoi love affairs, Shinano's manga club faces a more practical concern: the boys school also had a manga club and in typical male chauvanist fashion they think they have first dibs on the facilities. While trying to strike compromises with the boys, the two groups must come up with what they want to do at the school festival. One of the funniest bits of the book is when Shinano and Isuzu break a full-size hand-crafted anime character statue and must do everything in their power to piece it together again. And we all know what happened to Humpty Dumpty. And when Shinano and company attend a special event for one of their favorite anime shows, they're in for the shock of their lives. Another funny part is when the manga club comes face to face with their favorite anime voice actresses and find them wanting.
The best thing about Pretty Maniacs is that if you read it and you are an anime and manga otaku, you feel as if you're reading about your own life. I've been a fan of Kurihashi since the previous series Maniac Road, and I hope there are more manga out there of this quality. The art is well-done and NEVER grows cluttered or hard to follow. All the lines are clean. The characters are great within the context of a comedy comic, but you shouldn't expect complexity from a book like this. The only complaint about Pretty Maniacs is that there is only one more volume after this.
The Plot Thickens... well... not really........2006-03-14
Pretty Maniacs' second volume again follows the exploits of young Miss Shinano (the younger sister of Maniac Road's main character Takezou) and her quest to honor the otaku spirit by keeping her high school's manga club alive.
That's not so easy as her all-girls school is about to turn co-ed by merging with an all-boy's academy who just so happens to have their OWN club... one with more members and a charismatic reader.
But all is not lost, Shinano even gets her own devoted fan... in the form of an effeminate kohai (younger student) who isn't too adverse (maybe he's just that weak willed) to get the male members of the manga club to dress up in cross-play for an all-boy maid cafe for the school festival. There's even a sequence at the Maniac Road with appearances from Haruna, Aoba, and Isuzu (the three aspects of female fandom from the first series).
The art and flow is just about the same ole Kurihashi goodness, so no complaints there. My only wish is the the insulated stories had as much insight as the previous volume, let alone the originating series, Maniac Road.
All in all, a decent book for fans of the series, and worth a read in it's own right, but not without going through the rest of both this series and the previous series (Maniac Road) as well.
Book Description
Most people think by the time they reach middle age, they soon will be enjoying retirement with their mates. But for millions of folks worldwide, life hasn't turned out that way. Because of divorce, sickness, and death of a mate, they find themselves alone, lonely, and confused. They would like to enjoy their later years with a partner. Dating again becomes necessary, and people don't know where to begin.
This book will help them get started. It's a collection of 50 stories written by a man who had to start all over again at age 54, when one Xmas evening he came home to find his wife of 7 years gone and the house cleaned out. Boom. No warning. He wasn't prepared for the shock, nor was he prepared to start dating. He hadn't gone to school to learn how to begin dating. This book describes his mainly humorous, sometimes sad, often reflective journey to right himself again. The book and author appeared on the NBC TV Today Show in the summer of 1998.
Women readers will learn how and what men think about middle-aged dating. They will gain understanding, support, and encouragement when taking that first big step to "get out there again." Each easy to read, down to earth, told from the heart and stomach chapter ends with a comments section from the author's newspaper columns, which he started writing based on his experiences. Lauraine Snelling, author of 27 books, says, "Tom Blake shares stories and comments that remind us all that life is easier when we learn to laugh at whatever state we are in. So lighten up and enjoy."
The author is a syndicated columnist who has written over 225 columns on the subject of middle-aged dating. Country music singing-legend, Johnny Cash, says, "In the 20 years I have known Tom Blake, he has become an authority on dating and relationships."
Customer Reviews:
Buy It Now.......2005-06-29
If you are in your 50's or above and are getting back into dating, this book is for you. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Tom has written almost 1000 articles for Southern California newspapers and has appeared on national television four times (i.e. Good Morning America, Fox News, CBS) talking about different subjects like internet dating, how to meet men/women, do's and dont's of dating for people just getting back into the dating environment, etc. I could not put it down. I bought many for friends as gifts. Both his books are worthy investments.
BETTER THAN THE BRIDGET JONES DIARY.......2001-08-07
THIS BOOK IS A GOOD READ AND WOULD MAKE AN EXCELLENT MOVIE. IT CONTAINS MUCH HUMOR AND COVERS MANY OF THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF REAL LIFE. TRY IT, YOU WILL LIKE IT!!!!
Better than The Bridget Jones Diary.......2001-08-03
A good read. Lots of humor, would make a good movie.
I couldn't put it down!.......2001-04-29
Being able to laugh at one's self is a gift and Tom Blake has that gift. I was wiping tears of laughter from my cheeks. This is a must read...at any age. There is a lot of wisdom wrapped up in this author's humor. I'm putting Middle Aged and Dating Again at the top of my gift list!
Review of a Review.......2000-10-04
With reference to your first editorial review The Midwest Book Review, October, 1997", please see line three wherein it reads: "..and there fore fairly unique in the 'cannon' of dating..".
If I were you, I would add [sic] after that [mis]spelling of canon.
[Sigh] Guess I've been a copy editor too long.
Best to you. I love this website.

Book Description
Food preferences and tastes are among the fundamentals affecting human existence; the sociocultural, physiological and neurological factors involved have therefore been widely researched and are well documented. However, information and debate on these factors are scattered across the academic literature of different disciplines. In this volume cross-disciplinary perspectives are brought together by an international team of contributors that includes socialand biological anthropologists, ethologists and ethnologists, psychologists, neurologists and zoologists in order to provide access to the different specialisms on the topic. Helen Macbeth is chair of ICAF (Europe) and Honorary Research Fellow of the Anthropology Department, Oxford Brookes University.
Book Description
Charmingly rendered paper doll and 8 distinctive, carefully researched American Indian costumes. Traditional outfits for the Hopi, Zuni, Navajo, Pawnee, Sioux, Apache, and Arapaho tribes and the Acoma pueblo. Also, full-color accessories and tribal artifacts: basketware, jewelry, blankets, toys and footwear. 1 paper doll. 8 full-color costumes.

Historic Costumes.......2000-12-17
Suzy, the Indian girl, wears the different costumes of the Southwest Indians. The book includes a Sioux ghost dance dress, a Hopi dress with her hair done in large buns on each side, and many more. The dresses are lovely, and this is the perfect book for young children, as the material is very durable. They will need help cutting it out, though, because the paper is so thick. But this would be a perfect stocking stuffer, or a nice birthday present for a small girl. I'd say the age range would be from 3-8.
Book Description
Dress 1 doll in 8 fringed and beaded costumes of the Sioux, Blackfoot, Crow, Arapaho, Cheyenne, Osage, and Dakota.
Book Description
Carefully researched mini-collection features a little Navajo girl with a contemporary wardrobe of jeans, T-shirt, and sneakers and traditional tribal skirts, tops, and footwear. 1 doll, 26 full-color stickers.
Book Description
1 doll, 23 sticker illustrations — fringed skirts, tops, leggings, feather headdresses, masks and jewelry — teach youngsters about native tribal life and customs.

As with each entry in the Classroom in a Book series, this one is used as part of Adobe's official training and certification program. Adobe PageMaker 7.0 Classroom in a Book (With CD-ROM) offers practical, step-by-step, timed lessons covering all of Pagemaker's features and tools and ensures that readers master the application. In addition, it provides clear explanations on how and why things work the way they do and supplies elegantly professional artwork on which to practice.
Each lesson is well organized, from the opening rundown of what will be covered to the final chapter review, complete with quiz questions (and answers). Projects are the sort of practical challenges that most desktop publishers face today: flyer, letterhead, project proposal, CD jewel-case booklet, brochure, print and Web-based newsletters, color catalog, and more. You learn how to work with master pages, styles, and inline graphics and how to format a sidebar and use the story editor.
Each project also addresses real-world practicalities like spot colors, trapping, registration, bleeds, and other prepress issues. Understanding how each of these affects your print piece will be invaluable when it's time to talk with your printer. In addition, readers learn how to format and generate an index and a table of contents and how to use the version 7.0-enhanced Export PDF command.
One of the more compact books in this series, Adobe PageMaker 7.0 Classroom in a Book won't leave readers buried under excessively detailed projects. There's no wasted space and the trim, to-the-point text makes it enjoyable to work through the exercises while learning the software. Customer Reviews:
Very Frustrating.......2007-03-31
I am a college student majoring in Multimedia Publishing. This book was used as the Pagemaker textbook for my digital publishing class, and I found it very frustrating. The step by step instructions were very unclear on some parts and hard to follow. I felt as if steps were being skipped, and things just weren't explained well enough for me. Also, the fact that some of the needed fonts were missing from the disc did not help matters. If not for my class instructor, I'm not sure I would have learned anything with this book alone. I know this is supposed to be one of the better books out there, and it may be good for tips for those who are more experienced, but if you are a beginner like me, I STRONGLY suggest that you find another book!
Where is the Birch Fornt?.......2005-06-10
I have used PageMaker before starting with Version 6.0. I used an after market book "Teach Yourself PageMaker 6.0 in Twenty Four Hours" to learn it. Unfortunately they did not Publish the same book for 7.0. I had to brush up my PageMaker skills so I thought I would get Adobe's Publication "PageMaker 7.0 Classroom In A Book". To say the book is confusing is an understatement. The book gives you an estimated time that would be suffient to finish each lession usually two hours. All I can say to that is, In your Dreams! Try 3 to 4 hours. There is a set of mysterious fonts one of which is Birch thus the tittle of this review which certainly wasn't on the accompaning CD which is used through out the book. Has anyone ever found this mythical font. I was a good boy and loaded the fonts in Adobe Type Manager off of the CD and starting in lession 2 I didn't have the Birch font. Trusting soul that I am I loaded the CD back in the drive opened ATM and the birch font was nowhere to be found. If anyone has located it please tell me, I am sure it was one of things Adobe put in the book but not on the CD to drive users crazy, and for me that is a short trip.
Over all the content was good and the example give you a good overall feel of the product.
PageMaker 7.0 Classroom in a Book.......2004-07-27
I found myself very frustrated using this book. I kept going back as I thought I had missed something. For example, the author claims that all the needed fonts are included on the disk, but they are not, and without them, the examples do not look like they should. It is apparent that the book was not closely edited. REference is made to vertical rules when the action described must be a horizontal ruler! These types of errors make it very difficult for the novice to learn the application. Not that every thing is terrible, but when you spend hours because of omissions or mistakes trying to do what should only take a few minutes, it is frustrating. I do not recommend this book to anyone new to the application because unlike some of the reviewers, I do not know where to find the missing fonts. I also do not know enough about the application to know when I've followed the lessons and have gotten bad the results that it is not because I have made a mistake, but because the instructions were incomplete. So I found myself starting over and over again with the hope of getting it right. Frustrating!
Classroom In A Book - still the best series!.......2003-05-07
If you're the sort who likes to buy software and then use it without consulting the manual you probably own a Mac. That's fine, because that is precisely what the folks at Apple wanted to produce, a computer that needs no manual!
Still, the software that goes on that Mac or on that manual-required-before-you-start Windows=driven PC can get downright ornery. And the accompanying manual is as confusing as some passages in the Bible!
If you're one of the rest of us and have bought an Adobe product, I advise you to get the Classroom In A Book tutorial. The book and accompanying cd are terrific for any new pagemaker user.
If you work for on on a newspaper, newsletter or magazine you also should get Publication Production Using Pagemaker. The two go great together.
Great book, but hard to find accompanying files.......2003-04-02
I downloaded the e-book version of this title recently, and was very impressed with how easy it was to get started. However, I had to visit the publisher's website to download the Classroom files (you need them in order to do the exercises), and was only able to get the first three lessons. Very frustrating! I emailed and called the publisher to see if the files could be emailed to me (you can submit a form to receive the files on CD, but who knows how long that would take). To date, I have not received a response. Again, I like the book. It is very thorough, it is easy to read and follow, and after completing just the first 3 lessons, I already feel more confident using the program. But be prepared for a headache if you order the e-book!
