Underground comix are an obscure branch of art, and even if you've heard of them, you might assume they died along with the rest of the '60s counterculture. But comix are still with us at the dawn of the new millennium--though not the same comix, and certainly not in the profusion of the hippie daze. The best underground magazine of the early to mid-1980s was the anthology series Weirdo, edited initially by R. Crumb. Weirdo #2 contained the debut of one of underground comix's greatest talents, arguably the greatest after Crumb: Dori Seda.

Dori Stories collects Dori Seda's complete works: not only her comix (one previously unpublished) but also her foto funnies (one written by R. Crumb), sketches, posters, and impressive, full-color shots of paintings and ceramics. In addition, it includes several photographs of Seda; a bibliography; a spare, sharp introduction by Neil Gaiman; the moving tributes of friends and lovers (including comix by the cartoonists Krystine Kryttre and Leslie Sternbergh); and the award-winning story "Dori Bangs," an alternate history by Bruce Sterling in which Dori Seda meets the rock critic Lester Bangs--and they both live a lot longer than they did in real life. (Lester Bangs died in 1982; Dori Seda died in 1988, in her 30s, apparently of a combination of untreated car-crash injuries, alcohol abuse, flu, and emphysema.)

Seda's debut, "Bloods in Space" (a blaxploitation-style story about space men, written by K. Lambert), is pretty weak, but by the next year her artistic and narrative talents had blossomed. Her more or less autobiographical comix were the perfect vehicle. Confessional stories are hard to make interesting, but Seda's stories are terrific: well drawn, incisive, disturbing, and funny. Having read these confessionals, her fans were deeply saddened but not really surprised by her early death. "The Life Cycle of an Artist" shows an artist's evolution from creative isolation to hearty partying to, well, a reminder of why she hadn't been going out much in the first place. In "The Love Life of an Artist," a 30-year-old Seda, engaged to an extremely inappropriate man, ends up instead with a purple-haired teenage punk--a doomed relationship, but not for the reasons you'd expect. "The Artist Meets a Swinger, Or... Crabs Eating Raoul" portrays the sexual misadventures and conflicts that result when Seda's new man insists they both swing. If you're easily shocked, avoid Dori Stories at all costs. --Cynthia Ward

5 out of 5 stars A woman, a pen and her filthy dog.......2004-11-02

I discovered Dori Seda in college. I happened upon the classic "Twisted Sisters" compilation and I fell in love with Dori's stuff. Totally hilarious and gross realism, pitch perfect dialogue, great artwork. She's a slob, she drinks too much, she falls in love, she has an incredibly large and smelly dog that she has to shower with in order to get him clean. She also smoked too much and died too young, a tragedy. This is a great collection for lovers of Aline Kominsky, Julie Doucet, R. Crumb, Joe Matt, Harvey Pekar... RIP Dori...

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best underground comix ever made!.......2000-06-11

Someone else describes Dori as the 'queen' of the underground comix; I don't think I'd go there, and given R. Crumb as the 'king,' you'd have to consider Aline Kominsky, among others, as the 'queen.' Dori WAS a princess, though; AND a brilliant artist, and also a very good writer. She's definitely my favorite among the underground comix artists, male OR female. Her stories are among the best, and ARE the most entertaining, of the self-examining underground comix of the 70s. There was no subject too touchy for Dori, but she applied her keen sense of humor with a wonderfully gentle touch. Her artwork is incredible. There are few with a better command of pen and ink. This collection provides most of her work in one convenient place, and however you've gotten to this review, I know you have enough interest to appreciate the book. Buy it, you'll like it!

          Book Description

Jorie Green was a practical, level-headed graduate student when she got engaged to Barry Mark. But something happened once she had that sparkly ring on her finger: she went a little insane. Bride in Overdrive is a comic, quirky memoir of one bride-to-be's wedding planning adventures, by the popular Wedding-Channel.com columnist. While humorously exploring Jorie's obsessive concern over trivial wedding details, Bride in Overdrive also celebrates the excitement of one of the most important rites of passage in our culture, and the fears and joys that come to the surface as the big day approaches. The bride's adventures include: -The proposal and waiting for it -How to register without calling off the engagement -Life-altering decisions such as whether to order the invitations in cream, off-white, alabaster, or ivory -Succeeding on the 'slightly less painful than sawing yourself in half wedding dress diet' -Pondering how to tactfully request that Hollywood stand-ins be hired to replace eccentric members of the bridal party. It's a book that any bride who's given serious thought to what kind of underpants she should wear when she takes that march down the aisle will want to read at least once.

          1 out of 5 stars Not reccomended........2006-08-05

The author focuses not on marriage and the beauty of what she was going to experience, but on all the minor details that she became obsessed and irrationally focused upon.
Some humorous moments, but overall, not the best reading when you're preparing for marriage.

2 out of 5 stars good writing, bad behavior.......2005-07-22

I am a fan of the author's writing for [...], and her writing style is very good. "Bride in Overdrive" is well written and tends to be humorous, but I cannot say that I enjoyed it. I understand that the author is writing from her personal experiences, and that many brides get carried away in all the planning, but reading about her whiny, bratty, and self-important antics made me extremely angry. The book seems like more of a pat on the back for "bridezillas" instead of an attempt to laugh at the lengths brides will go to for a "once in a lifetime" event. The entire book seems like the author's attempt to justify the bad behavior she exhibited during her own wedding planning.

1 out of 5 stars Good book to read if you are a self centered bridezilla.......2005-06-18

that only cares to fit into a size 4 dress. This book was annoying to read and had very little humor. I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, funny and great comic relief........2005-03-30

As a bride myself, I loved this book. It was nice to see that what I was going through was somethign everyone else was going through.
Loved this book, I highly reccommend it, you'll get great laughs out of it.

3 out of 5 stars a bride definitely in overdrive.......2004-12-15

Bride in Overdrive is a diary of author Jorie Green Mark's Path toward Marriage. The reader gets to learn her inner-most thoughts and share her encounters with pre-marital brattiness. Her anticipation for the worst case scenario is combined with comedic overtones. It is not just herself trying to plan a marvelous wedding. Her story includes her best friends and extended family members and also an extraordinarily wonderful future mother and father- in- law. All contribute to fulfill her most lovely wedding day. The author does seem to possess a conceitedness about getting her own way - which at times she unabashedly admits.

            Book Description

Although it may not be the goal of every filmmaker, most of us learn something when we watch movies. They make us think. They make us feel. Occassionally they have the power to transform lives. In her book Reel To Real, bell hooks talks back to films she has watched, as a way to engage the pedagogy of cinema--the way film teaches its audience.

bell hooks comes to film, not as a film critic but as a cultural critic, fascinated by the issues movies raise--the ways cinema depicts race, sex, and class. Reel To Real not only brings together hooks' classic essays on films such as Paris Is Burning or the infamous "Whose Pussy Is It" essay about Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It, but also newer work on Pulp Fiction, Crooklyn and Waiting To Exhale. hooks also examines the world of independent cinema. Here, conversations with filmmakers Charles Burnett, Julie Dash, and Arthur Jaffa are linked with critical essays, including a provocative piece on Larry Clark's Kids, to show the radical possiblity of cinema--that it can function subversively, as much as it functions to maintain the status quo.

In its review of Outlaw Culture, the New York Times wrote of bell hooks: "She brings to the task of cultural criticism an astute eye and courageous spirit..." In Reel To Real hooks enhances our visual experience of movies, enabling us to see in a new way. Her work, like the best films of our time, provoke thought and create a context for dialogue. The essays and conversations collected here bear witness to the passion and pleasure of critical engagement.

            5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read.......2005-12-19

bell hooks is as critical and analytical as ever. Of all bell hooks' books that I've read, this is the best. The synopsis above says it all. Now all you have to do is read it. Filmmakers, pop culturalists, and people who think will be in pig-heaven

5 out of 5 stars bell hooks really gives good information in this one!.......2000-12-25

An excellent book that really gives you something to think about as she examines race, sex and class in America through the movies. I really enjoyed reading her feminist views, and her interviews with filmmakers Charles Burnett, Camille Billops, and AJ (Arthur Jafa).

Are you hip to the zine scene? Whether your answer is "absolutely!" "sort of," or "what's a zine?" everyone can learn from and be inspired by the funky, funny, fertile ideas set forth in Zine Scene. Written by Francesca Lia Block, author of the Weetzie Bat books (collected in Dangerous Angels), and Hillary Carlip, author of Girl Power: Young Women Speak Out, Zine Scene is both a tribute and a how-to guide to zines. Zines (as in magazines), are a righteous, radical form of creative self-expression. There are no hard-and-fast standards for zines, but they may contain one or more of the following: newsletters, journals, comic strips, artwork, photography, collage, poetry, and/or scrapbooks. The sky's the limit when it comes to production and length--from three pages of glossy paper to 30 pages of grainy photocopies. Block and Carlip teach by example, providing a plethora of reprints and excerpts from the tremendously diverse sea of zines. The range of zine creators, or "zinesters," is evident in the strong personalities that leap off the pages: the 21-year-old author of "Velvet Grass," who teaches her readers how to make arts and crafts (like duct tape shoes); "Flaming Jewboy," a 26-year-old drag queen whose manifesto includes "Thou Shalt Wear Heels"; the 17-year-old creator of "Private Catholic," who vents her feelings about private school; and 16-year-old Seth, master of several zines in which he discusses whatever he feels like--including his obsession with chicken fingers.

In addition to cheering on writing and art as a means of speaking out, Zine Scene also offers nitty-gritty details about copyrights, design, and distribution. But the emphatic, lasting message of this punky paean to self-publishing--and indeed the battle cry of zinesters themselves--is to be yourself, whatever that may be, with self-confidence, sass, and style. --Brangien Davis

5 out of 5 stars The best book on zines out there, sereoiusly.......2003-02-08

This is my fave' book on zines ever!!! I absolutely adore this book. It's done in a format like a zine so it's not just a bunch of boring tips, it's got Photos and photocoyped picture it is the greatest. It also keeps the reader in mind, its not telling you to go out and spend $50.00 on some zine making device, it comes in mind that most zine makers are dirt poor, liek me. (sorry i'm not trying to be sterotypical)I had been plannign to write my own zine for a while but this really got me inspired. It also has a bunch of snippets from real zines that people write. That was probably my favorite part...

                    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous! Inspiring!.......2000-05-02

I've published newsletters/zines for over 20 years, and this book open my eyes to so many new approaches. It's brilliant, inspiring, and liberating with so many "why not?" ideas. Whether you're a beginner with only the vaguest idea that maybe you'd like a zine, or a seasoned pro who wants to recover a fresh & innovative view of publishing/writing/zines/newsletters... well, this book is a MUST-read. Something for everyone, from fan to writer to publisher. There's not another book like this one!

4 out of 5 stars it rocked my little world.......1999-11-15

this had to be one of the best books that i have read so far on 'zines. it includes great little snippets to inspire those of us who have been working with 'zines for years to even those who are just beginning. great how-to photos on what kind of format to put your 'zine in and a great variety of self-published articles and essays. it was just good fun to read!

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE COOLEST BOOK EVER!!.......1999-10-24

This is an awesome book. I didn't even know what a zine was when I got this book and now I'm obsessed with them. This book shows you what to do from start to finish. I luv this book. Read it, you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars WOWOWOW TOTALLY F'ING AWESOME DUDE!!!!!!!@@@@@@@!!!!!!!!!.......1999-09-26

i thought this was the best book ever and it was so good and this is the only book i have ever read all the way through except for one of the babysitters club books but i forget which one because theres like a million of them and i never read anything because i never used to like reading books in sk00l because they were not about like who i am n stuff like that. but now i know about zines and they are so much better than regular magazines which are like oppressive and stuff like that and they just talk about makeup which is really stupid and not where the revolution is. zines are the revolution and grrrl power is tha bomb and francesca lia block is the best writer ever and i am going to name my zine after weetzie bat because nobodys ever done that before and i am a original.

                    this is AwEs0mE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Intro to Excel 2002.......2003-07-31

As an Excel programmer, I needed a "base-text" for setting up VBA. I gave it a 5 star because it has the main material I need to setup the next step to make Excel do the max. This is an intro Excel text that covers many areas essential to my work. I noticed the rather weak reviews of this text an I am surprised. I wonder if they really read the book! For VBA work, I use MS Excel 2002 Power Programming with VBA by John Walkenbach. The combination of these two books makes working in Excel very easy.

                      4 out of 5 stars I'm glad I bought it.......2002-06-13

Contrary to the other two reviews that existed when I wrote this, I found this book to be just what I needed. I have years of experience with every version of Excel, but only at a modest level. Because I do my work in SQL Server, I never needed any of the more obscure (to me) Excel features, until now. This book answered several of the how-to questions I had with its examples.

I have to agree with the reviewer who wanted more depth. While this book has met my immediate needs, it is clear that it is going to leave me wanting more, very soon. I will certainly have to buy a more advanced book, but I would not have been happy with a very advanced book before I used this one.

My advice is to take a look at the sample pages on Amazon and only buy the book if it addresses your specific issues.

3 out of 5 stars Microsoft Excel Inside Out Version 2002.......2002-04-02

The book is a rehash of the authors' 1999 publication "Running Microsoft Excel 2000." Both books have the same problem, i.e. a lack of comprehensive examples. Of the two, this book is only slightly better. Some of the examples appear to be extracted from the Help file rather than providing additional needed information.

Also, for someone learning or attempting to advance in Excel, neither of these books follow the [helpful] format of the rudimentary "Step by Step Microsoft" books that include, in the margins, pictures of the buttons. These give the relative novice potentially quick aid in navigating the system.

3 out of 5 stars NOt up to it's title.......2001-12-27

This book is not a bad introduction to Excel, but for me, it falls short of it's title. If you need explanations on such basic operations as "Altering Cell Contents" -or - "Formatting a Cell", then this book is no a bad choice. It's well organized and the writing is clear. It just doesn't contain the kind of depth I expected. I would think that a book with an ambitious title like " Excel from the inside out" would at least contain some information on advanced subjects like creating addins but it doesn't. The CD that comes stuck in the back provides nothing of additional value. I think the authors just compiled some useless odds and ends they had laying around in order to have a CD to include - possibly hoping it would improve sales.
If you are not at all familiar with Excel then you could do worse than this book but if you are looking to extend your knowledge beyond an introductory users manual then this is not the book you want. In fact this is the kind of book that Microsoft should be providing to you free - as part of your purchase of the software. Come to think of it, if you are new to spreadsheets and haven't made a purchase yet, do the industry a favor and buy Lotus 123, or QuatroPro and skip this book and Microsoft both.
