Delightful on a whim discovery.......2005-06-29
My boyfriend chanced upon this book at our local library where we were perusing graphic novels for a lark. Not only is Eden cleverly written but the art work is fantastic! I loved the section at the end with cover pictures and rough sketches.
The characters are endearing, its hard not to fall in love with the adorable antics of duckling Truman, and his best friend, weiner dog, Oscar. Both of the main human leads, Frank the vet, and Brandy, the psychiatrist are also likeable and I found myself rooting for poor Frank to finally get the nerve to ask Brandy out. Their relationship alone is enough to keep me reading!
Overall a very smart, very funny comic strip that I have now bought for myself and am collecting the rest. A must have for any comic fan and a must read since this book starts from the beginning of the strip.
Frank Cho is a master story teller.......2005-05-12
From University^2 to Liberty Meadows, Frank Cho has created a masterpiece. The humor is fresh and laugh out loud funny. The best part about the comics, or in this case, the trade paper back, is that the strips are unedited.
If you want to laugh about something clever this is the book for you. Oh, and the art is great, too.
KHAAAAAANN!.......2003-09-25
Before its voluntary departure from the Washington Post, "Liberty Meadows" had gained a loyal following that brought it back from possible cancellation more than once. Now this kooky strip and its bizarre characters are back in this book, "Liberty Meadows 1: Eden."
Welcome to Liberty Meadows, an animal preserve overseen by timid vet Frank and beautiful animal shrink Brandy. As Frank tries to muster the courage to ask Brandy out, the two of them also have to deal with the nutty animals there: a crazed Cow, Leslie the hypochondriac bullfrog, Ralph the tiny belligerant bear, Truman the water-fearing duck, and Dean the chauvinist pig in rehab.
This loony crew tries to deal with dates (where Brandy's crazed ex tries to kill Frank), the evil catfish Khan, camping trips with psychedelic mushrooms, falls into mine shafts, severed noses, truck-sized ticks, the insane stalker Cow kidnapping a celebrity and -- worst of all -- Dean's trip through the land of Cold Turkey.
You'd be hard-pressed to find a weirder comic strip than Liberty Meadows. Frank Cho combines the realistic drawing style (Frank and Brandy) with more traditional cartoon styles (the animals, and supporting humans like the handyman). Filled with wry pokes at pop culture and political correctness, it's refreshing and amusing in a sea of stale comics.
If you weren't lucky enough to read "Liberty Meadows" during its stint in the papers, check out "Liberty Meadows: Eden." Silly, weird, bizarre, and immensely entertaining, this is definitely worth a read.
1 to 2 MONTHS??!!.......2003-09-10
First of all, this book was supposed to come out in August. Now, the availability is 1 to 2 months? How long till the next book? 1 year?
I gave this 3 stars because:
5 stars: I love Liberty Meadows
1 star: The time for waiting
An suprisingly Intellectually Challenging Comic Strip.......2003-01-10
I first picked this book up thinking it was just another stupid anonymous comic book that I'd glance at and put down immediately, but upon browsing a few of the pages I started chuckling and then laughing out loud, and at one point I laughed so loud that I startled myself because I realized of course that I was in a book store and it was very very quiet except for my LOUD laughing.
A fantastic read, with realistic and believable characters that I suspect are probably taken from either the authors life or his dreams and imagination. I'd recommend to EVERYONE, however some of the jokes are aimed at older at least teenaged people, and some adult themes are weaved throughout.
The main characters are short-but-average-joe, a bunch of super-smart but WIERD animal-like characters, and the tall beauty naned Brandy that pretty much makes the book.
I wouldn't say I'm anxiously waiting for the next Frank Cho book because I have other interests that take up much of my time, but really, I'M WAITING ANXIOUSLY FOR FRANK'S NEXT BOOK! lol
Thanks for reading, I hope this review helps you decide on whether to purchase or not.
Book Description
Liberty Meadows is an animal sanctuary where the animals run the show! There's Leslie, the hypochondriac bullfrog, Ralph the midget circus bear, Dean the male chauvinist pig (who really is a pig), and the beautiful animal psychologist, Brandy, among others. Liberty Meadows is a bit Bloom County mixed with pop culture satire and sometimes (but never salacious) humor. It's life and love as usual in Liberty Meadows animal sanctuary, where anything and everything can happen. See how it all began in a new widescreen landscape format with completely remastered and uncensored comic strips.
Customer Reviews:
Funny As Heck.......2006-07-31
This reviewer first was introduced to Liberty Meadows when she was spending one of her many hours at a Barnes and Nobles.
The plotline, she had to admit, was a little strange, but seemed to work: a dorky vet by the name of Frank working at an animal shelter for some of the most eccentric animal characters known to man.
There's Leslie, the hypochondriac bullfrog. Dean, the obnoxious pig who smokes, drinks, and fancies himself a ladies man (ladies pig?). Truman, the duck who cannot fly. Ralph the midget bear inventor. And so on.
The comedy is often of a slapstick nature. Dean the pig's attempts to woo the ladies usually end up with Dean getting hurt (in one memorable instance, Frank has to remove a high-heeled shoe from where the sun don't shine after one of Dean's many attempts).
Ralph and Leslie are constantly either pulling pranks on each other or the other inhabitants and trying out one of Ralph's cockamamie inventions. Not to mention owner Julius' obession with outsmatring Khan the catfish, Frank's clumsy pursuit of Brandy, the animal psychologist, lots of sight gags involving other comic strips, and the occasional appearance of cartoonist Frank Cho, in the form of a chimp. You have been warned.
All and all, this writer doesn't know what drugs Frank Cho was on upon creation, but she wants it.

Viva Liberty (Meadows).......2005-09-11
Before its voluntary departure from the Washington Post, "Liberty Meadows" had gained a loyal following that brought it back from possible cancellation more than once. In a sea of snippy animals and dysfunctional families, Frank Cho's strip brought us something fresh and original: Complete madness.
But in case readers weren't lucky enough to catch Cho's strip initially, it has been immortalized in "Liberty Meadows 1: Eden." Expect nothing but madness, mayhem and a bit of wistful romance, and this kooky comic will not disappoint.
Welcome to Liberty Meadows, an animal preserve overseen by vet Frank and animal shrink Brandy. Nerdy Frank is instantly smitten with busty, kind-natured Brandy, but lacks the self-confidence to ask her out. As he struggles to admit his feelings, he must get to know the residents.
Unfortunately, those residents include a crazed cow, hypochondriac frog Leslie, chain-smoking chauvinist pig Dean, Truman the aquaphobic duck, and Ralph the tiny bear.
It's hard to find a comic strip that is as relentlessly weird as "Liberty Meadows," and it's amazing that Frank Cho managed to keep these off-the-wall jokes going for so long. Or, for that matter, that he managed to make them up at all. Mad Cow kidnapping William Shatner? That one was priceless, I have to admit.
Cho straddles the line between realistic and cartoonish artwork -- on one hand, Brandy and Frank are very realistic looking. Especially Brandy's, um, "details." Their actions are all-too-human, and our hearts bleed whenever Frank's nerve fails him. On the other hand, the animals and some of the supporting humans are goofy-looking, and act accordingly.
"Liberty Meadows" was a refreshing, too-brief reprieve on the comic page, and fortunately the stories of Brandy, Frank and the loony animals can be easily revisited in the first collection.

Have some sand - the gritty side of love.......2000-12-30
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the only complaint I would have was that I wish it had more pages! Its humerous and the postcards are wonderful, in fact I have one framed it appealed to my sense of humour. It is worth purchasing, the comical little sayings will bring a sparkle to your eye! I read it is now out of print, it would be worth anyones while to try and get a copy, you will love it. I went to Melbourne on holiday and this book was the best thing I'd bought!

Book Description
The strangest, sleaziest, most unusual periodicals ever published! Bad Mags illuminates the darker recesses of "pop lit" by providing an extensive overview of the hundreds of magazines and tabloids published since the '60s. The publishers of magazines like Gunpro, Crime Detective, Shocker and Go! Go! Big, cared little for good taste or decency and today succeed in presenting a view of America and its pop culture which is far removed-and much more -earnest-than the likes of Time and Life. As well as analyzing trends and key subjects-such as Sharon Tate, punk, Mad clones, hippie sex, early adult movies, gore, weird science, strange beliefs and drugs-Bad Mags provides full contents listings and background information on each magazine.

RPG.......2007-09-03
A new version of the Marvel Super Heroes game. This is where it gets annoying for the licenced properties and game thing, someone else gets it an does a completely new game.
One thing that was so great about the FASERIP version was the decade of support and heaps of stuff.
Planned obsolescence to sell new stuff is not fun, but the card mechanic here is interesitng.
Written for the 60's not the 90's.......2001-06-08
Wake up Magic the Gathering. This game is not compatable with the internet. It uses an old card style system. The older system was and still is the Best system for the internet. Since, it used a 100 dice system. The even though the older system was written for the 80's it is very compatable with a lot of chat programs in the late 90's and 2000.
Same thing with that Star Wars 6d system too. Magic the Gathering destoryed that system too. Even I can write or design a better game system.
Adequate System.......2000-11-14
A somewhat fast-paced role-playing system. It uses a deck of cards instead of dice, which makes an interesting change of pace. Another interesting quirk is that the gamemaster/narrator doesn't...well, _do_ anything. If an opponent/non-player character tries to hit your player, your _player_ makes the determination of success or not (by dodging). Kinda interesting in that it lets the gamemaster worry more about the story then endless die-rolling.
Despite several explanations and re-explanations, there are some parts of the rules that are still kinda vague. As someone else noted, character stats are rather...thin. Presumably the nice quality deck of 96 or so cards boosts the price up, but hey, I've seen it in bargain bins for much less (the game is out of print).
Basically, it's a nice "fast" game to pick up, and you won't have to spend a lot of time explaining to folks. Like the original TSR Marvel SuperHeroes RPG, it's fast-starting and players should catch on to it pretty quick.
I'll stick with the old game. Thanks........2000-06-10
The original role-playing game based on the Marvel universe was one of my favorites throughout the 80's and early 90's. The system was such that play was never bogged down with complex rules, which allowed the action and fun to flow naturally.
When this new Marvel game was released, I decided to give it a try. I rounded up some of my friends and former players, and sat down to dive in. We were utterly disappointed.
The SAGA system, which uses cards instead of dice, is an interesting idea, but often hard to swallow for experienced role-players. The game seemed to still maintain its emphasis on fast flowing action, but was not on par with the original (now out of print) game.
If you played the original, I suspect you will not embrace the SAGA incarnation. However, if you have never played the older version and can't manage to pick up a used copy, then you may want to give it a try.
If all else fails, you can always place it on Amazon auctions, right there next to the copy I bought.
Hey there fellow true believers!.......2000-02-06
The Marvel Super Heroes Adventure game is part of TSR's Saga system, which is touted as being a diceless RPG. "DICELESS! ," you cry....yep, you heard me right, it's uses a special variant form of playing cards. I guess this is the Magic(tm) effect, in that all new games must be ground breaking and innovative, i.e. use some form of cards. Fortunately, this isn't always a bad thing, as it fits the nature of this product. TSR's old Marvel game was just a variant of it's Gamma World system, and it was an awkward fit at best. The Saga system seems to be a good match, as it provides for fast and fun play, more of a beer and pretzels RPG (just keep the beer away from the cards, please). Don't expect volumes of tables and modifyer charts, 'cause this is not a game for rule-lawyering; Characters only have four main attributes, experience is determined by the number of cards you are allowed to hold in your hand, and most everything based upon the Narrator's (aka DM) judgement calls. My only major quibble is how little you get with this boxed set: The rule book, a quite slim colection of stats for some major Marvel heroes and villains, and the deck of cards. It would have been nice to have a larger collection of stats, but at least those included are the classic versions of Marvel favorites, except for Wolverine, who is presented in his more current non-adamantium form. Overall, this is a nice little game, and is great for those gamers looking for a light bit of gaming, and for those new to the field who would like an introduction to the new world of non-traditional RPGs. Now, if you pardon me, It's clobberin' time....

Yes, this is a time travel adventure, as you would expect. You have a
chance to take your heroes back in time in this adventure, and if
unlucky, get shot at a real lot.
If you are lucky, you will only be shot at a little, and the villains will not beat you up too badly. A fair bit of fun.

A so-so adventure.......2000-04-01
This work features the X-Men, Marvel's mutant heroes extraordinarire, in a battle against the parasitic alien race known as the Brood. The Brood are wonderful foes and this could have made for an interesting work, but much of the action leaves one indifferent. But all in all, not a bad buy for a Marvel fan -- especially one who follows the Children of the Atom.

Mistake.......2007-05-30
I made the grave mistake of buying this book. I wanted a book that would show me how to use Joomla. It's something else entirely, and it's about the size of the Yellow Pages. Not for n00bs.
BUY THIS BOOK!.......2007-01-18
If you have any need to know about content management, document management or information management,
buy this book! This book dissects and discusses the subject at various levels of detail, so any reader will be able to find the correct level of discussion for his or her needs. I am going to be working on a CMS system, so I
devoured this book. I believe I have a good feel for the problems and pitfalls I will run into on the project. And I know I will be referring to this book as the project progresses.
Thank you so much for writing this book! It's a life saver!
Perfect for all kinds of content management needs.......2007-01-10
I am working with a company to design and manage their new CMS system, and this book really got me off on the right foot. I was actually quite surprised how detailed, specific and up-to-date the book was.
Also, the author writes with the insight of someone who has worked for a long time in the industry. He'll make a little comment about how committees get things done, what management likes to see in a project proposal, how projects get stuck in the red tape, etc. and it would spark a memories of things that have actually happened to me. "Yes," I would think, "Committees DO have that problem!"
Chapter by chapter, the book walks you through the nuts and bolts of content management - what it is, why you need it, etc. It covers issues such as:
- If you're buying a pre-built CMS, what steps you should go through to ensure you're getting the right system.
- How to step through the many hurdles of management to get buy-in and to get the right product.
- If you're building your own CMS, how you should build the product plan, which features you should look at, what kind of staff you should have, etc.
- There is also a great chapter on why you should format your data with XML (which I was very happy to find as I am a big believer in XML).
- He also discusses choosing hardware, implementing the system, etc.
- And, lastly, he goes through different data types and specific features that you need or should know about (such as author permissions and metadata).
I was extremely happy with this book and definitely recommend it to anyone charged with planning or implementing a CMS.
Informative, helpful, written well, a must for your collection on CMS.......2006-03-22
This book is a required textbook for my online graduate publishing course at Pace University. I have enjoyed the book and the wealth of information it provides. It is informative and written well for anyone to understand. The examples and diagrams are terrific as well as the snippets from people in the business industry using CMS. At the end of my course in May 2006, this book will definitely be on my bookshelf and used on the job. I highly recommond this book for anyone.
It's a worthwhile purchase.......2006-03-19
Good book. It's clear, very well organized and planned book. It's a complete guide and knowledge repository for those who want to start understanding the Content Management paradigm and to the experienced ones who want to improve their skills as well.
