a great buy.......2007-03-14
This is a must have!! A wonderful story;and great artwork.
I highly recommend both vol.1 and 2..
short but worth it.......2007-01-11
Although it is a quick and easy read, the delightful artwork make Inverloch well worth the purchase. Sarah Ellerton has made a delighful all ages comic with fun characters. I can't wait for the next one even though I already know what happens. Even my boyfriend, who isn't really into comics, likes this one. I recommend visiting the website as well. I have been a regular visiter there for over a year.
More Awesome..........2007-01-10
Well seeing as I said mostly everything I wanted to say about these two books in my first review all I have to say is again I more then recommend this book!
Inverloch 2.......2007-01-10
A great continuation to the first book, it's all quite hard to put down.

Pure Unrated Awesome.......2007-01-10
I first read the comics online and fell in love with them in no time, after reading them for a few months I decided to check out the rest of the site coming across the order page and was more then happy to see that two volumes of this very awesome comic were available. I ordered both, they quickly came and were read even quicker.
A great read, deals with many different situations like predjudice and racism with that good ole fantasy twist.
Huge recommend to everyone!
Inverloch 1.......2007-01-10
Well worth the money, it's great to have such a high quality book available for when I want to look back on the comic without going online.
A Truly Exemplary Work .......2006-08-19
Before I came across Inverloch online, I had regarded webcomics as being forgettable, dime-a-dozen newspaper strips without the paper (and a vast majority of them are just that). However, Sarah Ellerton's amazing accomplishment opened my eyes to the fantastic talent that the internet, as an artisitic medium, can showcase.
Simply put, Inverloch (both as a whole and in the form presented in Volume One) is a graphic novel that any American or Japanese comic company would be proud to publish. And yet, its not authored by a committee of experienced writters, illustrated by a master inkist, or funded by a major company. Instead, it is the work of a single, dedicated woman.
The most striking thing about the work is the sheer quality of the art on every page. Backgrounds are intricate and brilliantly textured. Characters, human, elf, and goat-dog da'kor alike, are sharp and detailed from every perspective. The mood of each chapter is expretly enhanced by pacing, lighting, and angle, be it the soft simplicity of a peaceful da'kor village, the uncertain dimness of a overgrown forest, or the dreary hostility of a distant human town.
Additionally, Inverloch's story, though relatively simple (or so it seems), captures and modifies well the fantasy style of Tolkien and other great authors, creating a believably unbelievable world that begs for further investigation. The plot is easy to follow without being overly simplistic, and is well supported by a full cast of characters, many of whom remain unintroduced by the conclusion of this first volume. As such, this book does feel somewhat imcomplete, but it is nonetheless worthy of purchase by anyone with even a passing interest in fantasy; after all, even the greatest of epics must be begun somewhere.
This is what comics CAN be.......2006-07-15
I had Inverloch bookmarked for weeks before I finally decided to start from the beginning. My husband had been reading it for a while, and it finally drew me in as soon as I looked at the first page.
The artwork is top notch, which is something that can't be said of some comics when they're starting out. The story is evolving, but you can tell that Ellerton actually PLANNED the story, at least an outline, before she started. Too often webcomics seem like they have an idea, but no set plot to speak of. I'm very happy this isn't the case here, because it makes the storytelling so much tighter and more admirable.
I work at a bookstore, and literally the second this came out of the box with our shipment, I grabbed the stack to put one on hold for myself and the rest on a display as my staff pick. I can't say enough good things about it.
Aside from just the story: the print quality is great, the size is comfortable. It's just a really well-rounded publication.
Fantasy at it's best!.......2006-07-14
The only reason why I haven't rated this 5 stars is because it gets even better in the future. Inverloch, read by many (including myself) as a webcomic, offers a refreshing usage of fantasy, dealing with Elves, Wizards, but also creatures invented by the artist. Such as the main character for this volume, a Da'kor.
The artwork in this comic is amazing (again, only gets better in the future of the comic) and the characters are entirely believable.
Even if you have read every single page as a webcomic, this is totally worth buying, as it's such a good story and having it on paper only adds to the intensity of it! New to Inverloch or not, this is a must-buy for any lover of fantasy!

Fine Episode in Long-Running Sci-Fi Comic.......2005-05-03
"Les Spectres d'inverloch" [The Ghosts of Inverloch] is episode 11 of the long-running sci-fi comic strip "Valérian, agent spatio-temporel" which originally appeared in 1984 in the legendary French cartoon anthology, PILOTE. Together with episode 12, "Les Foudres d'hypsis" [The Thunder of Hypsis] (1985), this two album story arc takes future space-time agents Valérian and Laureline from contemporary Scotland to the distant planet Hypsis in the future. A series of mysterious nuclear accidents is leading towards a worldwide disaster, and the investigation leads to a mystery ship sailing the waters of the north Atlantic. The corrupt alien race the Shingouz provide key information that leads Valérian and Laureline and their allies to the cause of the crisis.
Note that this album and its sequel contain some nudity.

Following the Archmage's strange advice (and with a little help from some magic), Acheron and his friends journey west to find the mysterious Silvah and see what he knows about Kayn'dar's disappearance. But the world proves to be a more dangerous place then Acheron ever expected, and he soon discovers what fate befalls any da'kor foolish enough to venture so far from home.

Not bad.......2007-08-24
There are lots of good problems in here, but many times the instructions are poor so you arrive at solutions which are valid yet don't use the trick they are trying to get you to use. Some of the solutions are downright wrong, again because they fail to use proper instructions and correct terminology. Still, it's good for the brain, and there is some good stuff in here.
May have mistakes?.......2006-11-29
My nephews have this book on their shelf. Being a math graduate student, I flipped it open to see what's inside. It looks interesting, and certainly has some cool stuff.
However only after 5 minutes, I ran across this (keep in mind composite numbers are numbers which are NOT prime):
"Are there ever 1,000,000 consecutive composite numbers?"
I know it's true by an abstract algebra theorem. I was curious how they would explain it to a young adult reader. This was how:
"The answer is an emphatic yes. THe 1,000,000-term sequence 1,000,001+2, 1,000,001+3 all the way up to 1,000,001+1,000,001 consists entirely of composite numbers, becuse 1,000,001+K is always evenly divisble by K for any K in this range."
Firstly, I'm pretty sure you can check online to see there are lots of primes between 1,000,000 and 2,000,000. In the second place, their assertion about divisbility is ridiculous. According to that statement, 1,000,001+2=1,000,003 is divisible by 2.
I honestly don't know how many spots there are in the book that are this way. Maybe I just got lucky finding this one question.

Book Description
Bike Lust roars straight into the world of women bikers and offers us a ride. In this adventure story that is also an insider's study of an American subculture, Barbara Joans enters as a passenger on the back of a bike, but soon learns to ride her own. As an anthropologist she untangles the rules, rituals, and rites of passage of the biker culture. As a new member of that culture, she struggles to overcome fear, physical weakness, and a tendency to shoot her mouth off-a tendency that very nearly gets her killed.
Bike Lust travels a landscape of contradictions. Outlaws still chase freedom on the highway, but so do thousands of riders of all classes, races, and colors. Joans introduces us to the women who ride the rear-the biker chick, the calendar slut straddling the hot engine, the back-seat Betty at the latest rally, or the underage groupie at the local run. But she also gives us the first close look at women who ride in their own right, on their own bikes, as well as a new understanding of the changing world of male bikers. These are ordinary women's lives made extraordinary, adding a dimension of courage to the sport not experienced by males, risking life and limb for a glimpse of the very edge of existence. This community of riders exists as a primal tribute to humanity's lust for freedom.

Finding your place in the world.......2005-07-02
This book is about identity and the various Harley sub-cultures. It has little to say about metric cruisers, sport-tourers, or any other type of motorcycling.
It is not a textbook. It is for riders or wanna-be riders. It is for fun, for personal enjoyment.
And I did enjoy the book. It helped me learn that I should not waste money on a Harley when I replace my metric cruiser. Apparently I belong with the sport touring folks who wear high-visibility protective gear and top-of-the-line full face helmets by choice, not law.
I enjoyed the book, although the author's opinion of helmet comfort is misinformed and probably based on ill-fitting headgear.
I know I don't want to be part of the culture she describes, but I recommend the book. I disagree with her on many points, but I recommend this book. It's really a treat to read.
Participant-observation as Being There.......2003-02-10
BIKE LUST is a unique, forceful and informative ethnography in which Barbara Joans takes the reader inside the minds and hearts of an emergent, important and incompletely understood American subculture. She tells much of this story in the language and with the forcefulness of a cultural insider.
I know of no account of Harley culture like it. The examples are clear and cleanly and drawn, not only in the manner of a professional anthropologist but also as a storyteller with a sharp ear for language.
Joans comes to the task with particularly apt credentials, and the originality of her technique illuminates the character of the group she represents. An accomplished anthropologist with an established reputation in the field, Joans
has not written simply an anthropologist's monograph, but by adopting the voice of her study population, she brings the reader inside the community; she makes the events and the people come alive. This combining professional precision with subcultural patoise, enhances the portrayal. You find yourself seeing through biker's eyes, hearing and absorbing biker terminology and world view, and feeling the clamminess of water-soaked clothing after a stormy night's ride.
Because of Joans' highly accessible style, often invisible prose, and the intrinsic interest of the material, the work will have broad appeal. "Bike Lust" should find extensive readership among the general public because of its readability,
and because of the adventures it recounts. A significant part of Joans' contribution to this literature is her use of both masculine and feminine perspectives in equally engaging ways. For this reason it might be argued that Joans' work is the first effectively ethnographic study of this subculture.
If you read only one book on motorcycling . . ........2002-05-14
...this shouldn't be it. As a woman, I agree that someone ought to write a book about this subject, but Joans hasn't done it justice. She admits speaking with only one "Biker Chick" (author's caps) and nevertheless produces a whole slew of generalizations--based on what? Observation without interview doesn't make anthropology. Many premises are established (shakily) and then contradicted only pages later. Apparently she "interviewed" a bunch of her friends, threw together some poorly supported conclusions and wound up with this book. The scholarship is too poor to make it an academic work, and there aren't enough good stories to make it a general interest work. Save your money, or read The Perfect Vehicle instead.
Informative and enjoyable read.......2002-04-03
This was an informative and enjoyable book, especially for the targeted audience. As an earlier reviewer wrote, it is not a scholarly treatise with data, so if you're an academic looking for such, you'll be disappointed. But for the motorcyclist and passenger, especially the Harley owner, it's a good read. Basically, the female author offers her opinions on Harley owners and passengers, based on her fairly recent involvement in the lifestyle. She categorizes and describes both male and female enthusiasts. Being female, and since females constitute most of the passengers and are such statistical outliers as riders, the author spends most of her time on female related issues. Her anecdotes, and those of the females she interviewed, of their riding experiences are both informative and entertaining. As a fairly recent Harley owner, I really benefitted from her insights, and I recommend the book to all my riding friends, especially the females.
A Lackluster Book.......2001-11-26
Don't be fooled by the title of this dull book. It offers neither "lust" nor insight into what is a very interesting subject---women Harley riders. We may speculate about why someone would write such a book, possibly to exercize the author's ego or to fullfill some requirment to "publish or perish". But why would anyone read this one?
I bought the book with high hopes because I'm interested in the subject: women who ride big motorcycles. The book is really a cheap exploitation of people's interest in a "trendy" subject. The only real insights are those the author quotes from other books on the subject. The endless interviews with members of Harley-Davidson clubs are tedious and cover no new ground. Most strange is the author's glib treatment of the racism and antisemitism of some riders, as displayed by wearing of swastikas and making racist comments. Her analysis only goes so deep as to state that since most of "working class" white America is racist, why shouldn't Harley riders be? This is both an insult to working class Americans as well as to the reader's intelligence. I hope that this kind of crude apologism for racism is not widespread in anthropology, the discipline in which the author has her degree. Given the shallow analysis in the book, the author's gimmicky claim to be a rider herself is suspect and I wondered after reading it if she got most of her information from biker magazines.

Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Step by Step will tutor you through many of FrontPage 2000's components and options, allowing you to build your site without actually having to learn HTML.
Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Step by Step walks you through the site design process. You quickly learn how to create new Web sites and make them viewable on the Web with or without FrontPage Server extensions. Besides the basics of Web page creation, the book also covers the application of FrontPage themes to a site, using cascading style sheets, incorporating FrontPage components such as a marquee, a hit counter, page banner, and table of contents. The forms and frames tools are covered in exceptional detail.
The book's strength lies in the high level of interactivity the text plays with the accompanying CD-ROM. Each lesson in the book (each chapter comprises a lesson) has one or more related instructional files on the CD-ROM. To bring a story line to the tutorial, the book places you in the position of a Web developer designing for a number of clients. The files on the CD-ROM allow you to jump into a project and work with the featured tools without having to create all of the pages required at that point in the project.
If you are upgrading from FrontPage 98, the book includes a very helpful troubleshooting guide outlining upgrade issues. If you are a more experienced Web site developer, you might want to consider the Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Bible as an alternative source of information. --Rob Frankland

Only for absolute beginners.......2003-04-29
Although the book description says it is for beginning to advanced users, this books is really only for absolute beginners to web publishing and to Windows apps as well.
This book is really just a collection of examples (hence the step-by-step) to walk you through. However, the text is probably 3 times longer than it needs to be. The book repeats very simple steps (do you really need to show the user how to go to File...Save in every single example?) in all the examples and also pointless steps. For example, many of the examples have the same two or three steps to open the file (click on open, highlight a file, press OK). These steps could be combined into one in future examples.
Further proof is that there is a whole Appendix on an intro to Windows. For example, how to click with a mouse, open and close windows, etc.
Overall this book should probably be called Frontpage for Dummies. If you are an absolute beginner to Windows applications and web publishing, this book would be good for you to get going quickly with Frontpage. However, if you are already comfortable with Windows applications or you have done any sort of web design, this book is simply too beginner.
I'm giving it 2 stars only because it would be good for absolute beginner. However, it is misleading to say it is from beginner to advanced. If the book clearly stated it was only for beginners or was called something like Frontpage for Dummies, I would rate it higher.
If you want to be a FrontPage expert, do not buy this book........2001-10-23
I purchased this book because this was made by Microsoft Press, hoping that this book has a complete information on using FrontPage 2000. However, upon completion of reading and following procedures on every single page in 2 days, I found that it only covers certain basic features and does not cover any of the advanced features. (e.g. editing frames, creating search menus, using data base, displaying and replying to comments, etc.) I have to buy another book on FrontPage and wasted money and time on this book. If you want to be a FrontPage expert, do not buy this book, but buy the book with more detailed explanation on advanced features. (Running FrontPage 2000 from Microsoft or FrontPage 2000 Bible from IDG are good choices.)
You will be designing webs in two days............2001-07-19
Step by Step is exactly the correct title. This book is great for the person who buys software and wants to start using it right away without having to read a 4000 page novel. I was able to cover 6 lessons in two days (approximately 10 hours). To move this quickly, you should have a good foundation of Windows. Once you have completed all 10 lessons, then you can move on to the advanced books. This book covers planning, hyperlinks, adding style, tables, sound, images and video, creating forms, using frames and finally publishing and managing the web after it is published. Excellent.
Just the Book for a Newbie.......2001-04-01
Learn by doing. This book leads you through a series of exercises and reviews which teach you the basics of FrontPage 2000. There are some missing areas (buttons has been mentioned), but for a beginner the book can give you the confidence to construct a moderately sophisticated web site.
I read through the book and completed the exercises within a weekend. The exercises use files included on the accompanying CD-ROM as starting points, and lead you through modifications and enhancements. There are some AVI files on the CD showing some of the techniques in video.
A big plus, if you are on the fence about using FrontPage 2000, is that there is a 45-day demo of this program on the CD. During the demo period you may use the unrestricted program to determine whether you want to buy your own version.
As has been stated, you will probably have to buy a more advanced book if you will be doing heavy programming, but for beginners, this is the one to get.

Really Learn to Create a Website for Dummies.......2007-05-13
Skip the "for dummies" series and use this workbook. Step by step, you learn and build on the rudimentary skills you already possess or you wouldn't be reading this review.
Starting from zero..........2001-10-15
If you want to learn how to use FrontPage 2000 from scrtach, then this isthe book for you. They touch on all the main topics, but only in brief. If you know nothing about FrontPage, like I did, a book like this is quite useful. But be forewarned that any previous experience with FrontPage will make this book child's play, and in turn quite boring. It is truly a book made for those beginning from nothing. If you are coming from such a background, then you will be pleased at what this book has to offer.
An Introduction to beginners.......2001-07-30
This book is good for beginners, however it needs to have more exercises for the reader. It lacks a section that lists how to publish a web site, even though is a very simple process, is not listed on this book. Nevertheless it contains a glossary that people who are having their first drink of the internet will find handy.
GOOD BOOK FOR STARTERS.......2000-04-26
This is one of the good books for starters. IF you are a new bee to web related technology, you can read and understand this book very fast. But, if you are already good at any of the HTML editors, you don't need any of this kind of book at all because Microsoft products are self explanatory.
