Excellent Survey of Equity REITS But It Has Limitations........2003-04-13
This book is an excellent survey of the world of equity REITS. And it does sum up the value of buying each type of equity REIT. But if you're looking for a book which shows you how to invest in REITS and how to analyze the figures of a REIT, this isn't the book.
I also was hoping to find information on Mortgage REITS. There was only a paragraph or two on the subject --- certainly not enough information on this topic.
This book is geared more toward the analyst or someone with a tremendous amount of experience in REITS. It assumes you have a good background in REIT investing. And it certainly does not cover the entire field of REITS.
So it depends upon your needs as to whether or not this book would be a good addition to your investing library. I personally got three bits of information out of it that were worth the cost of the book. But I could have probably gotten the information elsewhere free.

Great Survey Of The REIT World.......2002-12-11
This book provided a great overview of the REIT industry. As an analyst, I found the summary data at the end of each chapter most useful. I also liked the interviews with the real estate titans, such as Sam Zell, they added a practical dimension to the "hard data" in the book. I picked-up some good practical insights from the interviews. It's a substantial but easy to read book.
A Must Read for Financial Planners and Seasoned Investors..........2002-09-19
This is a great guide for the sophisticated investor or financial planner looking to learn more about investing in Real Estate Investment Trusts. Mr. Imperiale outlines the history and characteristics of REITs as well as how investment portfolios can benefit from exposure to REITs. The interviews with succesful real estate investment professionals is also very insightful. This is a must read for the skilled investor considering purchasing REITs!
An Excellent Guide For the Wise Investor . . . ........2002-07-21
Richard Imperiale's book is a must read for the conservative investor considering real estate investment to substantially expand, strengthen, and increase the value of the assests in his or her current investment portfolio. . Mr. Imperiale's advice and strategies are sound for the investor seeking both short and long term investment portfolio gains.

Book Description
Pretty nightmares and disturbing daydreams. This is John Bolton's corner of the fantasy and horror neighborhood, and tourists are strongly advised to keep a tight grip on their sanity. Bolton's worlds of the bizarre have attracted legions of fans who delight in his dark macabre style and gothic sensibilities. A long-time comic art favorite, John's work has spanned several decades, many graphic novels, and a gallery's worth of decadently disturbing paintings. His collaborative teamings with such talents as Chris Claremont, Neil Gaiman, Clive Barker, Sam Raimi, Anne Rice, Christopher Fowler to name but a few has only burnished his reputation as a true master of fantasy illustration. It's time to celebrate those achievements with a full color extravaganza.
The Art of John Bolton is an oversized edition that contains over 100 magnificently reproduced paintings and illustrations on a luxurious heavy coated paper. Every page is a brilliant blending of both the artist's eye and the printer's craft. This is a hyper-caffeinated coffee table edition that allows the reader to savor every brushstroke and subtle shade of color, while experiencing the chilling wonder of the other-worldly subject matter. Fall into Bolton's dark realms andlet his visions envelop you with its wonder.

Customer Reviews:
Visionary author, poor packaging.......2007-07-19
Marvel's line of hardcover Marvel Visionaries books seem like a good idea, but there are a few that while they display the highlighted author's talents, they are poorly assembled. This hardcover TPB, which focuses on legendary X-Men scribe Chris Claremont, is sadly misassembled thanks to only featuring single issues of his various runs on different series' instead of full storyarcs, which really doesn't display Claremont's talent as a whole to begin with. The issues we get here aren't bad though: the penultimate issue of his legendary Dark Phoenix Saga from Uncanny X-Men, an issue from his Wolverine mini-series (featuring art from Frank Miller), as well as various issues from his runs on Excalibur, New Mutants, Iron Fist, and Daredevil. While what you get here isn't bad, if you start to dig the story you're reading and want to see how it ends, prepare to lay down more cash to pick up the whole thing in TPB form. There's nothing bad here at all, and Claremont is more than worthy of being labeled a visionary, but this poorly assembled TPB fails to display just how great and influential a writer Claremont was way back when.

Book Description
The party poopers at the humor magazine The Idler -- the same bunch who filled your brain with workplace horror in Crap Jobs -- now put a damper on the beloved annual getaway with hilarious true stories of nightmare vacations. Here, in all their hideous glory, are tales of leaky caverns, dodgy campsites, and bug-infested bedrooms in "luxury" foreign hotels. We've got dysentery disasters, land-mine-littered beaches, irretrievably lost luggage, and hours of exotic tarmac-sitting at the world's top airports -- not to mention Crap Vacation sex, crime, and toxic food you pay far too much for.
So if you're making plans to get away from it all, make sure you're not going somewhere you'll want to get away from. Let Crap Vacations be your guide down that old holiday road. Getting back to the nine-to-five grind has never seemed to tempting.

Purely entertaining.......2006-07-12
I picked this up in a bookstore and happened upon one of the funniest stories I've ever read. I think because the bookstore was rather swanky and the stories & profanity were so outrageous, I found myself in fits of uncontrollable laughter. I had to buy it - even paid full price for it! Not every story had me rolling, but I was totally entertained. Definitely for adults.
This book should come with a warning label.......2006-07-01
Yikes! I left this book on the counter after I received it without looking through it and my 7year old picked it up and showed me all the dirty words she found in it! The illustrations have more profanity and sexually explicit names than an episode of the Sopranos. I bought this book after The Today Show recommended it for a good summer beach read, but obviously not if you are on vacation with your kids!!! It is supposed to be a funny book but it is just trashy and not a bit funny.

The making of convention and cliche.......2003-01-09
This book maps a history of horror through literature, theatre, and movies. From the obscure to the mainstream, the author shows the depth of his research. He refers to such work as "horrid" literature. After reading, I don't think he intends to disregard the tradition, but I think he is trying to maintain distance.
The text follows a linear train of thought as it goes from the Graveyard Poets to more modern movies. As it progresses, the author continues to link how a particular book or film borrowed an element or two from a previous work. From this, all horror sounds formulaic and was stolen from some place else. This is misleading. Most works borrow from others. The thrill comes in mastering the elements or giving them a twist. I was disappointed that more was not said of H.P. Lovecraft, but that's just my wish.
After reading this book, I feel that the same came be done for most genres. Every genre has particular conventions and cliches that are used to get a specific response from the reader. Crypts create a sense of terror. A quest means growth or coming of age. A sandy beach at sunset means romance is brewing. This is what makes a genre a genre.
One of the benefits of the book is the bibliography. Any fan of horror, gothic or slasher, will learn of more books to read.
I would not recommend the book for casual reading. I would recommend it if you are a horror enthusiast looking for new authors.
A Condescending view of the genre.......2001-06-10
This book seems as if it were written to impress a tenure committee. The author clearly doesn't like horror literature, and his constant jibes at the works he discusses, though occasionally amusing, make one wonder why he has spent so much time on the subject. As you might expect from a critic who doesn't "get" the genre, his readings are shallow. M. R. James, for example, is portrayed as merely a skillful purveyor of gore. Worse, Kendrick reads all the works as having the same meaning. In his view, an attachment to such literature is puerile.
I did learn a few things from this book--for example, the history of horror in the theater was mostly new to me, and probably will be to many genre addicts. On the whole, though, the author simply knows less about his subject than most of his readers will.
A triumph of modern criticism.......1997-12-20
_The Thrill of Fear_ is the rarest of books -- a scholarly study that can be read and enjoyed by the layman. Covering 250 years of literature and art is an awesome task, but Kendrick attacks it with aplomb and pulls it off just as neatly as you please. This most entertaining book is highly reccommended to anyone with an interest in the horrid and the macabre -- from Gothic novels to EC comics to the gore-filled mayhem that passes for horror movies these days; it's all here!

Customer Reviews:
Interesting observations..........2006-05-05
Since the end of the Second World War, America has exerted a considerable influence on European popular culture. According to Sabrina P. Ramet and Gordana P. Crnkovic, the editors of "Kazaaam! Splat! Ploof! The American Impact on European Popular Culture Since 1945", these impressions can be seen in areas ranging from music, television, fast food, product branding, UFO sightings, and religion. The editors compiled articles by 13 different authors, both European and American, and arranged them into two areas of concentration; Western Europe and Eastern Europe. Each author examines a different facet of European popular culture and attempts to explain how it has been affected by American cultural influences.
Despite the fact that there isn't a unifying thesis present in the book, each author does express varying degrees of concern over the dynamic power and appeal that is inherent in American culture. In the essay entitled, "Does Mickey Mouse Threaten French Culture? The French Debate about EuroDisneyland", the author, Marianne Debouzy, chronicles the problems faced by French citizens as well as state and local authorities during the opening of EuroDisney. While some of the concerns outlined were seen as an attack on French culture by American culture; EuroDisney employees are expected to bath daily and wear deodorant, much of the outrage was focused on the use of American-style free enterprise tactics in negotiating work contracts and real estate purchases. In the essay "Fear and Fascination: American Popular Culture in a Divided Germany, 1945-1968", Uta G. Poiger examines the fascination that German youths on both sides of the Iron Curtain had for American style rock and roll and the fear that this attraction engendered in German authorities. The West German government was able to use this American cultural influence to their advantage in the political and cultural battle carried out against East German communism. With the inclusion of the piece entitled "UFO's Over Russia and Eastern Europe", by one of the books editors Sabrina P. Ramet, the topics are taken from the sublime to the ridiculous. In this essay American popular culture is seen as an influencing force on UFO sightings and crop circle formations in Russia and Eastern Europe. The author constructs a thin argument in which she blames the proliferation of UFO sightings, UFO magazines, and UFO clubs on the influence of American culture, despite the fact that recorded UFO sightings in Russia go back as far as 1910.
What struck me about many of the concerns that the essayists had was that they are many of the same concerns Americans have expressed about our own culture. The French fear of the overarching power of the Disney Company is the same fear that many Americans have about the monolithic power of companies like Wal-Mart and Microsoft. Many Americans complain that television programming is banal fluff with little redemptive power. We say we want programming with meaning and significance, but as an official for Hungary's HBO was quoted as saying in Beverly James' essay "Two Cheers for the Red, White, and Blue: Hungarian Assessments of American Popular Culture", the people don't want to be enlightened, they want to be entertained. Perhaps this means that we are all much more alike than we are ready to admit. That does stand to reason if we keep in mind that the strongest influence on American culture has come from European immigrants. The book raises questions that aren't addressed but deserve to be looked at. Is all American culture nothing more than popular culture? Can America's cultural contributions be no more significant than Jerry Lewis, McDonalds, and Disneyland? The authors presented in this book would leave the reader with this impression. While the authors don't come out and say it explicitly, the reader is left with the conceit that because American culture is seen as a negative influence on European popular culture, Euro pop culture by default has more value and worth. If that is the case, then why doesn't European pop culture have as much appeal in America as American pop culture has in Europe?
This book is important in helping American readers understand the impact that their culture has had and continues to have on Eastern and Western Europe. With the exception of two of the articles, one mentioned earlier concerning UFO's in Russia and an essay written about the exploitation of Russian ?migr? artists by American children's book publishers, the book provides initial insight into some of the issues facing U.S-European relations in an increasing global age. While not intended for readers interested in an in-depth causal analysis, it does make an adequate jumping off point for further discussion.
Product Description
Wars Past. Wars Present. In the 3050's, the discoveries of long-buried Star League records led to a plethora of new cutting-edge BattleMech and vehicle designs by the end of that decade, resurrected from the blue prints of design firms centuries old and thought lost to antiquity. Now, ten years later, these designs have moved from novelty to workhorse, as the Inner Sphere once more finds itself at war! Fully updated to circa 3070 and still containing the same fantastic art by Duane Loose, Classic BattleTech Technical Readout: 3058 Upgrade launches these designs into the current time frame, including notable MechWarriors/pilots, as well as new variants. Additionally, a battle armor section has been included, providing full Classic BattleTech stats, and updating the histories for these twenty venerable designs.
Customer Reviews:
FASA's last success........2004-01-07
Truth be told, TRO 3058 seems to be a culmination of FASA's previous experience with earlier tech readouts. That being said, it's quite apparent the effort was well worth it.
No artist captures the feel of Battletech like Duane Loose. Rest assured he does not pull any punches with this one.
The revamped vehicles are impressive, as are the rediscovered Battlemechs. Most of the goodies in this book are fairly well designed. Ballistic weapons are typically given workable quantities of ammunition (and supplemental energy weapons) and the majority of Battlemechs have sufficient heat sinks. Just the right amount of background information too.
Well worth the cash, gang. Technical Readout 3058 is the best of the bunch. Do yourself a favor... avoid TRO 3060 (and TRO 3067 for that matter); it's not worth the paper it's printed on.
More mechs and uninspired.......2000-10-02
This Tech readout is more of the same churned out of the FASA factory. More mechs than you can shake a stick at, and hopefully they get you to buy the overpriced minitatures. However, that being said, there are a lot of mechs here, enough for even the most ruthless player. Thankfully though they left out the "Typhoon", and "Gauzzilla" mechs. Mechforce North America rubber stamped pieces of junk that get away totally from the spirit of the game. Good background information on the mechs however, and good illustrations. How does Duane Loose do it?
Not bad!.......1999-09-12
There are some of the best available 'mechs in this book, clan and IS, and although some of the pictures stink, they are mostly of hansome 'mechs. The vehicles are good, some even appealling enough to use. There are some excellent 'mechs and vehicles in this book, their write-ups are good and there are pictures that, if not excellent, do portray the look of the 'mech well enough. This is a good TR to buy, but perhaps shouldn't be your first.
Not bad but 3060 is better.......1999-08-19
I realy like the Turkina, and the Kodiak(but the pic for the Kodiak stinks). However the rest are a little bland for my taste. If you get only one tech readout, get 3060, but if you get two, get 3060 and 3058.

Optimizing Oracle Performance
ASIN: 0596002688 |
Book Description
One of the most important challenges faced by Oracle database administrators and Oracle developers is the need to tune SQL statements so that they execute efficiently. Poorly tuned SQL statements are one of the leading causes of substandard database performance and poor response time. SQL statements that perform poorly result in frustration for users, and can even prevent a company from serving its customers in a timely manner.
In this book, Mark Gurry shares his in-depth knowledge of Oracle's SQL statement optimizers. Mark's knowledge is the result of many hard-fought tuning battles during his many years of providing Oracle tuning services to clients. Mark provides insights into the workings of the rule-based optimizer that go well beyond what the rules tell you. Mark also provides solutions to many common problems that occur with both the rule-based and cost-based optimizers.
In addition to the specific problem/solution scenarios for the optimizers, Mark provides a number of handy SQL tuning tips. He discusses the various optimizer hints, telling you when they can be used to good effect. Finally, Mark discusses the use of the DBMS_STATS package to manage database statistics, and the use of outlines to specify execution plans for SQL statements in third-party applications that you can't otherwise modify.
Customer Reviews:
Well written and to the point.......2007-07-07
I typically like these little pocket reference books from O'Reilly and this one is no exception. However, this is more than just a reference, it's a nice primer on Oracle SQL tuning. It's a pretty safe bet that you'll get your $10 worth out of this book pretty quickly.
Practical Oracle database tuning guide that provides best overall return.......2007-05-26
Purchased a few years ago, this little guide has provided the best return on investment when compared to more bulky works on the subject of Oracle database tuning. The word "reference" was probably chosen over the word "guide" in the title of this book because the former would seem to imply usage solely for quick lookups on various related subjects. However, this work is really a step-by-step primer that can be used alongside online Oracle database reference manuals. Because this book is so short, it can be digested in a matter of hours. During such a short time period, the reader is exposed to topics ranging from Oracle rules-based and cost-based optimization to database statistics gathering and SQL hints. And all this information is presented in a practical manner that includes many examples that will help the reader start off on the right path.
Essential guide for tuning Oracle SQL.......2003-05-22
This is the best book I've seen for tuning Oracle SQL.
It is well written, up to date (includes 9i info), and full of examples and real world experiences. All packed into 100 little pages!
Many of the Oracle books I've purchased (especially the tuning references) are just sitting on the shelf collecting dust. They're too big, and filled with a lot of 'dead weight'. I've already read this pocket reference twice (it's suprising how much more of it 'sticks' the second time around) and gathered more useful knowledge than all my other sql tuning books combined.
I know this is called a pocket reference simply because of it's size, but it's really more of an instructional manual than just a reference.
Every Oracle developer and DBA should read this book ...at least twice.
Worths to own one!.......2001-12-29
Yesterday, I saw this pocket book, then I decide to buy it because...
* Clear clarification on which optimizer (cost-based and rule- based) is used for a specific situation and its problems.
* Sorts, indexes, IN/EXISTS, OR/UNION, Loop, joins with tables...etc related performance issues and rating , giving a reader a reminder on the criteria to write a well-performed SQL.
* What is bad SQL?How to use SQL Hints?
* How to analyze table with DBMS_STATS package?
* How to pre-define outline for your execution plan ?
I have bought DBA checklist and Oracle with UNIX, they are my nice partners as well. Haha...I still remember I deal with a staging database problem in my work, I cannot find a solution from a THICK and HEAVY book but from them.
If you need handy guides, pocket references are excellent and light, haha...I want to buy RMAN reference later :D, they seem a series of fiction.
