Book Description
Life can be tough for real estate professionals these days. Even with interest rates at historically low levels, the uncertain economy makes homeowners hesitant to relocate or trade up. There just aren't that many clients out there, and the few who exist generate fierce competition. In fact, it seems the single ""hot area"" is foreclosures. But that's not necessarily bad news.
Conti and Finkel's book is a good ""crash course"" for real estate brokers and agents wanting to understand this area and explains the intricacies involved in funding investment deals, using various buying/closing methods and employing exit strategies. Thanks to the book as well as workshops and seminars offered by the two authors, thousands of people each year learn the art of lucrative real estate investing.

Investing in Foreclosures.......2007-10-17
Easy to read and understand. The Foreclosure process and strategies are presented with real life examples that help you to apply and to formulate your own strategies. It is also a good reference book.
Powerful evidence .......2007-05-25
Making Big Money Investing in Foreclosures without cash or credit is a morally courageous examination of real estate investing!! Peter Conti gives powerful evidence of new ways of investing. In this successful oriented book the author minimizes risk taking and explores objective ways towards successful investing. Must read!!
Excellent overview of Foreclosure purchasing.......2006-12-22
I had run across my first pre-forclosure deal and needed to get a basic understanding of the steps and processes. Peter and David's book provided that wonderfully. I was able to use the steps and scripts to sign up a deal, provide help to a stressed-out seller and reach the proper department at the lender. The suggestions of how to talk to both the seller and the lender have been very helpful with dealing with the human side of things. I felt very comfortable with the style and the seller has been very appreciative. I didn't feel manipulative at all.
Making Big Money Investing in Foreclosures: Without Cash or Credit by Peter Conti.......2006-11-09
An official Library Weekly book review.
REVIEW:
This book generically highlights a few ideas on how to invest in
foreclosures and how to finance it without using cash or credit.
Part of the formula is the use of "double closings" which allows
you to simply invest with a minimal amount and use the sell price
as the payment during the title closing. The difficult aspect of
this is it doesn't truly describe certain foreclosure techniques
available in each state (generically applied). Additionally,
you may need to read this with a grain of salt with the current
real estate market conditions.

Another Finkel disaster.......2006-06-28
How to get the most money for your property. This topic, worthy of a book, gets a couple of pages which are platitudes. This is the second book of his I've read recently in which he talks about determining the market price. The approach he advocates will result in a variance with the market of 40%, if not more. And, he lumps apartment buildings in with houses as if they were valued the same way. Of course, they are not.
On the plus side, in this book he recognizes that people do tend to get legal advice before signing a contract. He tells you how to diffuse the lawyer's criticism before it happens.
During my years as an apartment broker, I dealt with more than a few lawyers, including clients. Maybe his approach will work, but I'd think not.
This is another feel-good, cheerleading book. Rich Dad, Poor Dad does a better job of cheerleading, but has even less substance than this lightweight work.
Once again, the author has silly sales techniques that don't work. Once again, let me point you to the best writer in sales: Neil Rackham.
Spare yourself time, money and effort. Pass on everything David Finkel writes or promotes (as I shall hereafter).

I agree with [previous reviewer].......2002-09-22
... I have been studying Real Estate for about a year and I was always a little confused by all the different information concerning foreclosures , REOs, etc., and this book is helping to clear it all up. It's probably due to the way the author takes you through the different scenerios with actual examples. To teach it this clearly he obviously knows what he's doing. At [money] in the bookstore it's a bit pricey, but at the discounted Amazon price, I think it's a must have! ...
A must read for all real estate investors.......2001-10-10
This is the best book that i found so far. It is easy to read and easy to understand. Unlike other books, this one walks you through the process of buying a foreclosed property with actual cases, documents, guidelines and helpful tips for avoiding mistakes. It is like having an expert there with you. Don't take my words for it. Read it and find out how good it is.
Come on now..........2000-01-08
I read through this book in the store and did find it to have some good info, but the other review in here goes way overboard. It seems like this person is talking about the bible and not this book. The review states this book is "a must-read", "an invaluable learning tool, as well as a must-keep guide for future reference", "an inspiring (yet mindful of pitfalls) strategy-packed book", and "leaves you wondering why he revealed all his secrets. "
Listen, if this is the author or some friend of theirs making this review, please don't insult our intelligence by making such a blatantly false review. This book may have some merit, but it's not the best thing since sliced bread.
Insightful, creative, and realistic strategies for investors.......1999-11-08
This book is a must-read for novices and experts alike. As a real estate appraiser and aspiring investor, I found this book to be an invaluable learning tool, as well as a must-keep guide for future reference. An inspiring (yet mindful of pitfalls) strategy-packed book with an empasis on the pre-foreclosure process. Leaves you wondering why he revealed all his secrets.

Book Description
A comprehensive, fully re-mastered collection of turn-of-the-century rarities from cartooning and animation pioneer, Winsor McCay: "Tales of the Jungle Imps," "Little Sammy Sneeze," "Dreams of a Rarebit Fiend," and "Pilgrim's Progress." Best known for Little Nemo in Slumberland, and the seminal animated feature Gertie the Dinosaur, McCay puts his artistic talent and whimsical humor on full display here.
Customer Reviews:
Nice enough but rather redundant.......2006-02-23
The content is interesting as far as it goes (see below) but the reproduction quality on these volumes is rather spotty - some pages are quite nicely done, others not so great (the later volumes have some pretty atrocious prints in them - nothing here is too terribly bad, though some of the pieces - Jungle Imps in particular - have been reduced in size to the point where it's hard to fully appreciate them). No attempt at scholarship is made - all dates are approximate and no attempt is made to supply context for any of the works. One suspects that the dates that ARE given are untrustworthy.
My main interest in acquiring these volumes was to get the Rarebit Fiend episodes not already collected elsewhere. As such, this volume is rather disappointing as it contains a straight reprint of the Dover volume - no more, no less. Well, a little less, actually, because they don't reprint the title page or the whimsical introduction (and the Dover is significantly larger and easier to read). It's clearly taken from the Dover edition because Checker also leaves out the final mysterious 'politically incorrect' episode mentioned in the Dover intro. Some of these episodes are duplicated in later volumes as well.
The contents are approximately as follows: 60 pages of Rarebit Fiend (from the Dover), 40 pages of Tales of the Jungle Imps, 60 pages of Sammy Sneeze and 30 pages of Pilgrim's Progress.
The Jungle Imps are interesting, but not so much my cup of tea. Sammy Sneeze holds very little interest for me (and the better ones have all been reproduced elsewhere in higher quality). Pilgrim is moderately amusing, but not nearly so intetresting as Rarebit Fiend in my view. As such, this volume was rather a letdown.
A good selection of early work from the greatest cartoonist.......2004-02-22
Winsor McCay has had "Little Nemo in Slumberland" reprinted in full colour in multiple volumes over the past several years, but his earlier and less well known work hasn't been served quite as well. Checker Book Publishing Group has tried to remedy that, and this book is valuable for the sheer *amount* of material that it covers. Over 200 pages cover four of McCay's early series - Dream of the Rarebit Fiend, Tales of the Jungle Imps, Sammy Sneeze, and A Pilgrim's Progress. Most of the Rarebit Fiend strips printed here were already seen in the Dover edition of the strips. The Tales of the Jungle Imps strips are still gorgeous in spite of the fact that McCay's colours have been printed as grey tones and the drawings are reprinted at an almost microscopic size. The Sammy Sneeze pages fare a little better. Some of the better reproduction is saved for the Pilgrim's Progress strip, which is a treat because it's not one of McCay's better known works. The book measures about 7x10 and is printed on a good, coated stock. If I were to suggest some things that would have improved the book, I would begin by asking for better and more literate introductions to the strips. For instance, in the book's introduction, it's claimed that Winsor McCay invented animation, and that in the history of animation, before there was Winsor McCay "there was nobody." That point is arguable, since Emil Reynaud (1892), James Stuart Blackton (1900), and Emile Cohl (1908) all got there before him. Was McCay THE BEST? Without a doubt. A true pioneer and trail blazer? Absolutely. The man was a genius. But his achievements, which were so great, need no exaggeration. Also, in the introduction to "A Pilgrim's Progress," it's mentioned that it was named after "John Bunyon's" 17th century book about the "human lifespan" of the same title. Actually, the spelling is "John Bunyan," and Bunyan's book was not an allegory about the "human lifespan," but an allegory about a Christian's spiritual journey. Not to be sarcastic, because this really is a good book, but some proofreading and a few minutes' worth of research might have prevented just that error. McCay's Pilgrim's Progress is an allegory about man's journey, but it is a secular allegory. It deals with the mundane cares that we deal with in life - and in the strip involving the drug addict who has tossed his "dull care" to the wind, the Pilgrim wisely chooses to endure his burden rather than give in to a greater evil. But to return to the book overall . . . The introductions are kept brief, which is a mixed blessing. It's good to let the work speak for itself, but at the same time, we are so far removed from the world of 1903-1910 that some historical or social commentary on individual strips would have been nice. Publish dates at the bottom of each page would have been a good addition too. I also hoped to see a selection of the incidental illustrations that McCay often did for the Cincinnati Enquirer included. This last request may be answered in later volumes in this series of books - I'd be thrilled if that were so. Congratulations to Mark Thompson and his staff for helping make some of the dreams of this rarebit fiend come true. Now, how about a tab size, full colour album of JUST the "Jungle Imps" pages . . . ?

Product Description
Paring a novel into a two-hour film is an arduous task for even the best screenwriters and directors. Often the resulting movies are far removed from the novel, sometimes to the point of being unrecognizable. Stanley Kubrick's adaptations have consistently been among the best Hollywood has to offer.
Kubrick's film adaptations of three novels--Lolita, The Shining and Full Metal Jacket--are analyzed in this work. The primary focus is on the alterations in the characters and narrative structure, with additional attention to style, scope, pace, mood and meaning. Kubrick's adaptations simplify, impose a new visuality, reduce violence, and render the moral slant more conventional.
Customer Reviews:
Valuable Book - But Why Only 3 Films?.......2005-04-08
I was particularly interested to read this slim volume because unlike most film books I read, which are full of information on films I've never seen, I had actually seen all 3 films, and read all 3 books. I plodded through a rather tedious introduction where he lays down the matrix for which he examines each film/book (I've found that most academic introductions can be skipped) and this is by far the weakest part of the book. In short, he examines the differences and similarites between the respective novels and films. You really don't need to know any more than that.
While well-written for the most part, I kept wondering, why only three films? I don't remember (even in the introduction) why these three were selected? They are not chronological - Lolita comes at the beginning of his film career and the others were the most recent films he had produced. Nor do they have any stylistic or thematic similarities (either the books or the films), so why these three and not all of Kubrick's work? (99% of which has been adapted from novels or short stories).
It could also be argued that the author chose three "lesser" Kubrick films (although, as a huge Kubrick fan, I love all three). Why not Clockwork Orange? Why not Dr. Strangelove? Why not Paths of Glory? All three are considered by most critics and fans to be three superior films to the ones discussed.
That's one question, but the most important is: Why not all of his film adaptations? At 173 pages this is a rather slim volume and when you deduct notes, introduction and space for a few photos, it makes one wonder why more films were not discussed.
Another flaw is that he seems to miss the basic point of Kubrick's adaptations. Kubrick was never trying to make a great adaptation of a novel. He was trying to make a great films. He took what fit his obsessions (as well as the spine of the film) and discarded the rest. In some cases he drastically altered the story, its focus, and its meaning, to meet his ends. In every case for me but the Shining, the one thing Kubrick did achieve is prompting me to read the original work (I had read the Shining a year before the film, but in all other cases, I sought out the book after seeing his film). To me this is the true test of a successful film adaptation, as opposed to what changes are made in the attempt. I've read more books than I can count because I loved the film version. That is the true power of film adaptation.
In the end I can't say that this out of print volume is worth paying the price you'll have to fork out, but for academic Kubrick fans its certainly worth seeking out at your local library.
An excellent look at a much neglected subject........1998-12-01
Jenkins writes a book that needed to be written for the longest time: an in-depth examination of the process by which Kubrick has created his various masterpieces. Save for his films made prior to "The Killing", Kubrick has only worked from adaptation. And he has chosen material that has stumped filmmakers, material that in some cases was considered unfilmable. An outstanding, well written, researched, and thought out book. Highly recommended for writers, students of film, and devotees of Kubrick.

Snap-On or OUT?.......2007-03-24
I was not happy with this book for a small time collector that I am. I collect many things and one of them being Snap-On (items). I found in this book with Tools ONLY being about 10 pages of pictures not enough about these items as well as many items that have been left out. The same go's for these other two catagories. Tool Boxes ONLY about 6 pages and Commemorative items only about 8 pages. I understand we can not meet ever catagory for ever collector in the Snap-On world. But it should have been covered alot more and or better on it. It was NOT just the above mentioned catagory that I found this it was as well as other catagories not mentioned in this book. Also I notice not much information was spoken on most of the items in this book. Such as how many have been made, They should of shown the diffrent types of commemoratives items, tools, tool boxes, ect. that Snap-On put out. Well you be the judge of it for youself. I wasn't happy with this book for the price, nor with Caroline's imput. I guess that's why it's called UNAUTHORIZED guide to Snap-On.

Very Comprehensive, Well-Written Guide.......2007-07-17
Mary Ellen Bates has created a very well-written, informative work that covers all of the salient aspects of starting one's own information services business - including those that someone looking into the field would never even think to ask about. Ms. Bates' writing style has a personal feel that is at the same time very professional. Her personality as a no-nonsense, savvy, and yet friendly information services professional comes across on every page.
The book really covers two important but somewhat distinct skill sets: how to start and run a successful business and how to be a successful information services professional. Ms. Bates' apt writing style weaves these two elements together quite seamlessly.
I suggest reading "Building & Running a Successful Research Business" cover to cover before spending your time reading any one of the more generic books available on the topics of how to find information online or how to conduct research. Once you have covered all of the bases with Ms. Bates' work, it would then be prudent to pick up some of these other works to dive more deeply into the areas where you need additional support.
An outstanding resource .......2007-01-10
Mary Ellen Bates is an internationally-known presenter on business information and research topics, however in this book she talks not about where to find information, but about how to build a business doing just that. The book is practical, inspiration, and actionable, but also makes it clear that the life of an information entrepreneur is not for everyone. A great resource for those considering this career path, or those already in it who need a bit of professional, albeit friendly, coaching.
Many Pages, Minimal Useful Content.......2006-08-20
There are a variety of approaches to starting a Research Business, and this book simply does little justice to providing business-smart content for doing just that. If you want to embark into a research business on your own, this might give you a vision but it will certainly not give you the business smarts you need to really start and manage your new business. Best to look into resources on starting a consulting business and other resources about starting any business.
Best of luck.
- Dissapointed
Finally -- a handbook that does what it says.......2006-02-27
So many "how to" books are filled with airy reiterations of the obvious or catchy but useless "10 Ways to..." Build and Running a Successful Research Business, on the other hand, is dense, useful, funny, insightful, honest and inspirational. A true page-turner in a genre that so rarely sees this caliber of writing or thought.
Great book on how information pros work.......2005-08-09
I bought this book hoping for tips on research, and I got what I wanted. I was also impressed by how this book was organized. It contains a LOT of information, and it seems to me that this information is all relevant and useful. If finding information and doing research is part of your career, this would be a good book to have. I'd also recommend it for people who are likely to hire information professionals.
