Deja vu.......2003-07-05
Who said Latin wasn't useful? Henry Beard, in this volume and its predecessor, demonstrates that it is very useful, and not just for identifying a dish on a menu in Rome that looks suspiciously like the Latin word for 'eel'.
This volume begins on a fun note: French sounds even better in Latin:
Savoir faire = Scire facere
Nouveau riche = Novissime locupletatus
Merde! = Merda!
From there we proceed to philosophy:
Cogito, ergo sum
Sum, ergo edo.
Cogito sumere potum alterum.
(I think, therefore I am. I am, therefore I eat. I think I'll have another drink.)
And lest we forget, the memorable Latin phrase for use at a toga party:
Toga! Toga! Toga!
(memorise this, for it will be on the test)
There are things in this volume for sports fans, pop culture fans, those about to celebrate and those who want to be casual. If you want to sound intelligent while saying you think you've just spotted Elvis in the crowd, this book can tell you how to bring up the subject intelligently.
If Caesar had had this book, he might have rephrased his famous utterance as Veni, vidi, nates calce concidi! (I came, I saw, I kicked butt!).
Divinissimum est!
Proving once again, some people have far too much time on their hands. And we are more fortunate for that!
Great for e-mail signatures!.......2002-11-01

Book Description
"Bernard Gordon was the writer behind some of my favorite movies (but I never knew it). Now, he tells his most riveting story--that of his own colorful career. . . . Fascinating!" --Joe Dante, director "As a blacklisted screenwriter, Bernard Gordon was never completely silenced, but it is still thrilling to hear him have his say in a memoir of Hollywood's darkest era. . . . Gordon's story is a testament to the everlasting vitality of creativity in the face of scare tactics and coercion." --Kirkus Reviews "Gordon's book is . . . a remarkable story of how he not only survived, but lived a high life in Europe as a much-in-demand writer--although denied recognition [for] his craft--until 50 years later by both [writers'] guilds and the Academy." --Variety "His portraits of the brilliant Philip Yordan and Samuel Bronston, the producer-financier duo that virtually created the 'runaway' (offshore) production game, are unforgettable, as are his accounts of making, among a dozen other films, 55 Days at Peking, The Thin Red Line, Krakatoa East of Java, Day of the Triffids, Earth vs. The Flying Saucers and Horror Express. . . . His adventures as a writer and producer sparkle in this generous, well-illustrated account." --Foreword "A born storyteller, [Gordon] writes with warmth and humor, and there's an emotional edge to his razor-sharp recall." --Publishers Weekly The Hollywood blacklist, which began in the late 1940s and ran well into the 1960s, ended or curtailed the careers of hundreds of people accused of having ties to the Communist Party. Bernard Gordon was one of them. In this highly readable memoir, he tells a engrossing insider's story of what it was like to be blacklisted and how he and others continued to work uncredited behind the scenes, writing and producing many box office hits of the era. Gordon describes how the blacklist cut short his screenwriting career in Hollywood and forced him to work in Europe. Ironically, though, his is a success story that includes the films El Cid, 55 Days at Peking, The Thin Red Line, Krakatoa East of Java, Day of the Triffids, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, Horror Express, and many others. He recounts the making of many movies for which he was the writer and/or producer, with wonderful anecdotes about stars such as Charlton Heston, David Niven, Sophia Loren, Ava Gardner, and James Mason; directors Nicholas Ray, Frank Capra, and Anthony Mann; and the producer-studio head team of Philip Yordan and Samuel Bronston.Customer Reviews:
How an avowed communist dealt with the Blacklist.......2000-06-13
The book has two distinct parts but needs a third. First, he quickly explains why he was a member of the communist party. I still believe this fascination was a liberal viewpoint which was carried to an extreme given the recent depression. This section discussing life in Hollywood under fear of subpeona was very interesting and compelling as written from a struggling screenwriter.
Section 2 then deals with his life as a screenwriter working mainly in Spain and Paris. This section really didn't deal with the politics of the time but instead is a personal memoir into his life in the business. I learned a lot of the movie business from a different perspective but actually found this part to run a little long. His description of his side trips in Europe was also very interesting.
There are two important pieces I felt were left out. A more in-depth discussion of his involvement with communism and his current feelings. When he came back to America he talks of how pleasing the return was but he never closes the chapter on what his current feelings are about communism. I think anyone that condemns this man's thoughts without listening are short-sighted. But I also think that he should more fully explain his thoughts, how they have developed and what his thinking is now since that was the premise for the book.
The final item left out of the book were the last 20? years of his life. Since I invested this much time reading about him, at least he could have given a short description of what he has been doing once he left the business. What's happened in the last few years. He mentions what his daughter is doing. What about him? He does mention his wife dying and I was very touched as they seem to have had a very good marriage in a business where there are so few.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. It taught me and showed me a life with which I was not familiar. It also addressed some of my unanswered questions as to the fascination with Communism in the mid-century. But it also left some questions unanswered. If the Author reads this review, I wish he would contact me and explain some of his beliefs in further depth than the book.

Read about David Niven, Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner (not so good); Telly Savalas, Robert Shaw, James Mason (good) and many others. Most of all, read how Gordon, laughing much of the way, turned the tables, built a fascinating career and refused to be destroyed by the blacklist.
This book is not just about Hollywood. Europeans will be surprised to read of the involvement of their contrymen in the McCarthy period. The British and Spanish film industries gain new stature as places where Gordon finds he can work without having to suppress his independent spirit.

While it's still a nice introduction, it has become dated.......2003-04-27
At the time of its writing this book filled a void, since there was not much "out there" covering performance tuning in general as well as for Sun boxes in particular.
Mike Loukides' "System Performance Tuning" still hung around in its 1st edition, and thus had established itself somewhat as the grand-daddy of UNIX performance tuning books, but was already pretty outdated. It's 2nd edition was still years away.
While Adrian Cockroft's "Sun Performance and Tuning" today still provides some interesting insights, and therefore could be a welcome addition to a Sun system administrator's bookshelf, there's another book which should be considered first: "Resource Management" from the Sun BluePrints series, which he wrote in collaboration with Richard Mc Dougall, and various others.
only if you're just starting out.......2001-10-25
If you're just starting out with Sun administration and do not know a lot of the unix commands to administer and monitor a Solaris box this book will help. The book does cover much of the basics and background that someone starting out needs. The book does leave out a number of higher level concepts and doesn't cover all tunable parameters so it doesn't really help much beyond already available text/webpages which you'll still have to research and scour to really learn the whole story on Solaris performance and tuning. But if you already know some of what you're doing you're money is better kept in your pocket.

The easy way to solve a performance problem--and the one to which hardware manufacturers love to call attention--is to apply more horsepower to the application in question. It's safe to bet that a server upgrade will speed things up. True information technology professionals, however, won't take the easy way out when dealing with an increased workload for older systems. They'll do their best to wring top performance (with required reliability) from existing hardware, thus improving their organizations' return on capital investment and demonstrating their own engineering skills. The second edition of System Performance Tuning offers advice on where to look for bottlenecks in applications--both local and networked--that run under Unix. It also offers advice on provisioning new systems, which is to say it offers advice on deciding how much computing power is enough for a new system to be implemented.Emphasizing Solaris 8 and, to a lesser extent, Linux, the new version of this book represents a significant revision (the first came out in 1990 and was pretty badly obsolete). There's coverage of advances in hardware--multiple processors, RAID storage, faster and cheaper memory, and networked devices--as well as consideration of changes in the demands placed on machines (after all, few people were concerned about Web server performance in 1990). Administrators will get plenty of value from the authors' discussion of what goes on during, for example, a series of large store-to-disk operations, and be better able to optimize their systems. --David Wall
Topics covered: How to get top performance from computer systems (those running Linux and especially Sun Solaris 8) without adding processor capacity, memory, and other resources at potentially great expense. The authors explain the ways in which operating systems and applications use processors, memory, persistent storage, and networks, and point out potential bottlenecks. They also show how to use tools--such as execution timers--that you can use to benchmark performance changes.
Book Description
System Performance Tuning answers one of the most fundamental questions you can ask about your computer: How can I get it to do more work without buying more hardware? In the current economic downturn, performance tuning takes on a new importance. It allows system administrators to make the best use of existing systems and minimize the purchase of new equipment. Well-tuned systems save money and time that would otherwise be wasted dealing with slowdowns and errors. Performance tuning always involves compromises; unless system administrators know what the compromises are, they can't make intelligent decisions. Tuning is an essential skill for system administrators who face the problem of adapting the speed of a computer system to the speed requirements imposed by the real world. It requires a detailed understanding of the inner workings of the computer and its architecture. System Performance Tuning covers two distinct areas: performance tuning, or the art of increasing performance for a specific application, and capacity planning, or deciding what hardware best fulfills a given role. Underpinning both subjects is the science of computer architecture. This book focuses on the operating system, the underlying hardware, and their interactions. Topics covered include:Customer Reviews:
Thoroughly Disappointed.......2006-03-08
Indispensable place to start.......2005-07-25
Good when it's right, but be careful..........2003-05-14
Many parts of this book are top-notch. It does an excellent job of drilling down the process tree, caching processes (memory and disk, and the structures of both), and bottlenecks such as latency. I learned a lot, and I've got a fair background in performance tuning.
However...
The "Solaris and Linux" part is a joke--they could have eliminated all of the Linux tuning instruction/reference, and the book might have lost 15 pages. Clearly the authors aren't nearly as familiar with Linux as they are with Solaris. Not a big deal, but it's misleadingly marketed.
Furthermore, there are many MANY mistakes in the text--mistakes that, if read as given, run absolutely counter to the way the system behaves. Weren't there ANY proofreaders for this book? Also, the sections on disk performance and reliability (i.e. RAID arrays) were confusing and inconsistent. This is a subject I know and know well, and can only assume that the authors simply don't 'get' some of the stuff they're trying to present.
Buried in all of these mistakes and shortcomings is a 5-star book just screaming to get out. If they fixed the things I've mentioned, this would be THE standard reference--the performance tuning version of Evi Nemeth (et. al)'s Unix sysadmin handbook.
As it is, it's very useful, but get a second reference on anything you can't puzzle out--you might be right.
A comprehensive, "user friendly" technical sourcebook.......2002-05-06
An excellent guide to system performance and architecture.......2002-02-15
The book is great for both introductory and advanced administrators, and covers the full gamut of performance, from code to disk to CPU. What is especially refreshing is the focus on practical performance tuning, helping to make tuning you do have maximal benefit for your applications.
