Another Great book ..........2007-03-30

Another Great book to visit the Patterson's with. "For Better / For Worse" has to be one of the best comic strips of all time. It really makes you think, "They are just like my family", and if you do not have kids, read the books so you know what to prepare for.

One of the best FBOFW collections..........2001-03-31

This collection from 1994 is packed with stuff to keep the reader moving. Michael's graduation, the death of a family member, Gordon and Tracey's engagement. Seeds are also planted for Michael's future career...

Johnston is best when she's juggling the subplots of different family members, and things go into high gear in this TPB, probably because there are now so many characters in this strip with their own lives! This is one of the best FBOFW collections.

I wouldn't recommend a newbie to start with this collection, though. I'd try a few of the earlier ones first so the payoff here is greater when you get to it.

So funny, I cried........1998-12-14

This collection has it all: laughter, sorrow, etc. I read it from beginning to end non-stop. Every page had something surprising. It was a pleasure to read. I'll start it again today.

Lynn Johnston is my favorite comic strip writer/artist, and FBOW is my favorite comic strip. Highlights of this edition include Michael's graduation,Gordon and Tracey's engagement and the death of Farley,which is truly moving.

I read this book almost a year ago, but I was prompted to write this review when I discovered (with horror)during a search for books dealing with contemporary Australian film that there was no customer feedback yet for this title! This book is a real treasure, even for those not remotely associated with Australian film. In fact, even divorced from film interests at all, this book is filled with interesting and engaging narrative from fascinating and colourful characters. As a film resource, it is unparralled. There is unfortunately a real poverty of material dealing with current Australian filmmaking that is this absorbing and entertaining. As a recently graduated film student, I would suggest this book as a great resource for film students in all nations, not just Australia. Australian cinema is unique, diverse, and booming on the local and global scene. This book is the most up to date resource that I could find, and by far the most enjoyable, it's just a really good read on so many levels. I really can't reccommend it enough, and I hope someone writes someting as good dealing with Australian film sometime soon.....

A theorist's look at Party and Protest.......2000-10-21

Party and protest is a comprehensive study of of two distinct subcultures: DiY Protest and Rave (party) cultures. Having a strong theoretical background in subculture theory (esp. the Birmingham school) I felt that this book has certain elements to offer the curious British subcultures student, but that the insider perspective causes some problems for the accountability of the essays. One would almost get the idea that McKay, while forming this anthology, was conscious of the relationship he has as a member of the academy versus the exclusive British subcultures. I would recommend this text as a study of DiY groups but one must keep in mind that the essays all seem to come from a nastalgic last-chance attempt at holding on to the "good old days".

Mostly interesting examination of new protest cultures.......2000-06-16

The face of protest is changing rapidly. What North Americans tasted in Seattle (Nov 1999) has been going on in Britain for a solid decade. The new protest movement is a fusion of environmentalism and anarchist theory, with a dose of art and drugs in the mix. These forces have come together in the aftermath of the Cold War, as Thatherite and Reaganite politics are eaten by the maggots of history. Now that we can dispense with the Red Scare crap, a new left movement is targetting greedy corporations, gluttonous consumerism, and ecocidal social practices. This book gives a good introduction to those protests in Britain, even as they are spilling into North America. Recommended for academics, punks, anarchists, and politically engaged people of all stripes and spots.

Enough about ravers, already........1998-12-27

Being a yank, I found the chapters in this book devoted to breathless polemics on the rave "movement" and the importance of ecstasy as a critical force in shaping a society devoted to Peace and Love(TM) suspiciously similar to the claims of Tim Leary et al of the magical powers of LSD. Here in the colonies, ravers are generally mid/upperclass kids with too much free time who get kicks in expressions of mass vapidity. Walking around stoned ain't gonna change the world, and The Man with The Gun won't take you seriously if you can't walk straight or operate a motor vehicle. The claims of the new disco prophets aside, americans take drugs to get f'd up. I would resent the efforts of a self-proclaimed Voice Of A Generation to portray my alcohol abuse as some sort of revolutionary statement. I have spent zero time in any british rave clubs (when i was in london i walked up to the door of the Astoria, paused, reconsidered my plans, and continued walking to the liquor store down the street), but I have a feeling that the scene is pretty much the same, granted with subtle differences due to the admittedly more restictive Brit class system. Intoxicants do not a movement make. The rest of the book, dealing with specific British DIY methods and campaigns, were a more inspiring. The superficiality of the middle of the book, however, tainted the whole enterprise. If this review seems a bit muddled, forgive me. Like most of the rest of America, I am at this moment suffering a severe Saturday morning hangover.

I was in the process of building a new computer for myself and shopped Amazon.com for some books to help with my build, Maximum PC hit the mark with a book that walked me threw the whole process.Not only was I so impressed with this book, I came back and purchased two more of Maximum PC's books. Thier books are bright full colored and easy to read. You can't go wrong with any of thier books.

great fundamental modding book.......2005-10-26

This book covers all the basics that a beginning modder would need to know. He also branches out into modding a computer out of found objects, using a swiss hard shell backpack as a working example. There are plenty of high quality, color photos that clearly illustrate all the processes he describes.

But my favorite aspect of this book is Paul's teachings of the proper mindset for a modder. Adventurous, inquisitive, creative, always looking for a new and/or better way to do things. He not only gives very practical advise about this mindset, but demonstrates it in the working projects he goes through in the book. It is refreshing to have the author show how he learns from his own work, instead of seeming to sit on a high throne from his 20+ years of experience.

For any computer nerd with a sense of self this book is a great guide on how to turn your favorite machine into a personalized spitting image of yourself. I found this book very easy to follow, and the instructions were easy to follow, with colour images and step by step instructions

This is a great book! The entire book is printed on glossy paper with full color printing - really, a quality book. The book has good, clear photographs on almost every page, and the writing clear and easy to understand. I've read most of the boks on PC modding, and in my opinion, this is the best one.
