Book Description
It's not easy for teenage martial artist Ranma to remain victorious over his ever-vigilant rivals. But it's even worse thanks to a bizarre curse that turns him into a girl whenever he's splashed with cold water. With a keen sense of social satire, this episode has Ranma fending off the advances of a boy smitten with his female half.
Customer Reviews:
The mark of the battling god.......2005-10-25
Ryoga Hibiki has only two ambitions: Defeat his arch-rival Ranma Saotome, and win Akane's affections. Both of those come into jeopardy in the thirteenth volume of Rumiko Takahashi's "Ranma 1/2," where Ranma must deal with magical swords, old enemies, and less-than-festive goings-on.
Ryoga is wandering in the mountains when he encounters a wacky old hermit. The old man gives him the "mark of the battling god," which will make him the strongest man on earth -- except that it's a goofy smiley face. He can only erase it if he's defeated, and Ranma takes up the challenge immediately. But can he figure out how to defeat the world's strongest man, before Akane figures out Ryoga's darkest secret?
Christmas is less than merry when a pair of little kids, who believe Happosai is Santa, begin following him on his underwear raids. And Kuno wins it big when he gets a magical sword which grants three wishes -- and Ranma seizes the chance to be all man again. He goes on a date with Kuno (with Akane lurking around to make sure Kuno doesn't get frisky), and is about to get the final wish -- but only if he kisses his most loathed classmate.
Finally, an old enemy from Ranma and Ukyo's past returns: the Gambling King, who cheated little kids ten years ago, and whom the two kids defeated. Now he's come to demand payment for what Ranma bet and lost. Problem is, it's the Tendo dojo; Soun promptly kicks Ranma out until he can win it back, which he's determined to do. Problem is, Ranma is really lousy at gambling.
Ranma has always made enemies easily, and now we find out that he's been doing it since the age of five or six. And of course, the teenage martial artist has to deal with his frequent foils -- kendo-mad Kuno; Happosai, who makes his life a misery; and Ryoga. The ending of the Christmas story is a bit weak, but is made up for by Ranma's final line.
And this has some very fun (and tense) moments, like when it seems that Akane has discovered Ryoga's secret (he's really her pet pig). On the other hand, Takahashi throws in some funny physical humour, like Ranma scouring Ryoga's stomach, Kuno's assorted wishes, and poor Ryoga doing an unwitting striptease in front of a ladies' club.
One nice touch is the deepening of the Ranma-Ryoga relationship, which has always hovered somewhere between rivalry and friendship. Ranma admits this out loud, when he offers to help Ryoga because "you're the only man I consider my rival." Nice touch there. And of course, we discover that Ranma is a lousy gambler, and that there are things (kissing a guy) even he won't do to undo his curse.
Un-merry Christmas, same-sex smooches and stomach graffiti provide plenty of smiles in the thirteenth volume of "Ranma 1/2."
Ranma 1/2 will keep you laughing.......2000-03-01
ALrighty then. Rumiko-san has to have the oddest sense of humor there is. The plot line for Ranma 1/2 goes something like this; boy-hating girl has a father, who say's she's to marry the son of an old friend. Old friend shows up (as a giant panda) and brings a girl along. old friend explains that his son turns into a girl when splashed with cold water (and turns back when splashed with hot water). From this point on, some of the craziest whacks pop in and out of the story. There's Ryoga, Ranma's arch rival with no sense of direction (and lots of Bandanas and umbrellas). Shampoo, the chinese amazon who wants to kill the girl form of Ranma, and marry the boy form. Kuno, the girl obsessed overdramatic moron who runs around with a BIG sword, and his twin sister, Kodachi the black rose, who is equally insane and dramatic. Happosai (can't spell his name, sorry) the panty stealing perverted midget man, and Pantyhose! the love triangles (and quadrilaterals and pentagons, aw hell, everyone want's to marry someone, except Akane and Ranma of course) might confuse you of at first, but you'll get use to it. And the best part is the fact that cold water will turn up in the oddest places (you'd never believe how many old ladies will be washing they're houses before school). And then of course there's the odd assorment of weapons that the characters use (spoons, umbrellas, bandanas, anything can be a lethal weapon when Akane's involved) you just won't be able to stop laughing. If you're a fan of Clamp, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z or Slayers (Xellos-sama!) you'll love Ranma 1/2! And even if you have no idea what i just said, and are just nodding your head to keep me from talking anymore (just humor the crazy people they say) you'll like it! P-chan!
Who says 13 is unlucky?.......2000-01-31
Even though it may be volume 13 the good stuff keeps on coming! it all starts with Ryoga getting this crazy mark of the gods, that whenever someone charges him it triggers this involuntary spasm so that even Ranma is no match for him (GASP), but Ranma takes care of that! Then the little panty-stealing pervert Happosai *CRINGE* gets some new disciples (who thinks this won't end well)The next part is Ranma may just have a way to get rid of his curse, but it would mean a date with Kuno! Finally, never bet your life! If your a Ranma fan you'lle reheheheally be a fan of this book!
Great fun to read!.......1999-09-19
This book is a great continuation of the Ranma series. It has 4 stories with all your favorite caractors: Ryoga, Happosai, Ranma and the gang, Kuno and a new one: The Gambling King. You have to read Vol. 13!

Book Description
This quirky cultural criticism extols the value of relaxing, retreating, and watching the world whiz by from a specific vantage point: the American porch. While taking life a little slower offers such medical rewards as lowering blood pressure and regulating serotonin levels, "porching" is also presented as a lifestyle that draws from past days of old-fashioned hospitality and neighborly banter. The ironic and tongue-in-cheek tone provides an eccentric and inspirational perspective on contemporary life.
Customer Reviews:
For Porchers Across the Country.......2003-11-15
I found this humourous look at "porching" to be very witty and informative. Who knew America's Favorite Pastime has been documented throughout history, back to the ancient Romans and Greeks? The photography is spectacular; a documentation of porching in its own right. Porching, according to the author, influences every aspect of life, from courting to relaxing to managing family relationships. I have never read a more enjoyable book on the subject. This is truly a book for everyone to relish, young and old, while doing what Americans enjoy most: porching.
great coffee table book.......2003-10-16
Anyone who has ever stepped out onto a porch to eat an icecream cone and with good company is going to enjoy this book.
Dr. Buchino's musings on the leisurely activity are well orchestrated throughout "Porching." No, he's not advocating sloth. Rather, he's meerly encouraging you to rethink the best way to spend the limited number of heartbeats you have left. And in a light-hearted, witty way.
Buchino lends his advice on why you should porch, porching and love, and the overall medical soundness of porching. Quotes like "I porch, therefore I am" should inspire you to go out on your porch and nap the afternoon away.
The good doctor's brother, another Dr. Buchino, has provided more than 20 vivid photographs of porches, stoops, gazebos, etc. from around the country.
Kathy Finnegan's illustrations are the perfect compliment to the humorous text.
Overall, it's a wonderful comentary. For the $20 price tag (even better when discounted), it's a great book to leave on your coffee table (I've had several guests flip through it and smile since I got my copy in September). It also makes a great gift for Christmas, Chanukah, Fathers Day, or birthdays.

i've seen the light.......2000-06-25
I use to hate post modern art and the idea of appropriation until i discovered that one could take what already existed and create a completely new work of art from it. Greenaway is a genious of such, and his exhibits in Europe prove it, as do this book. This book is a fine example of the next step in photographic arts via the computer age using manipulation. A must for the visually aware of art and photo.

Book Description
Flights of fancy and fear, ecstatic highs, dreadful falls, and beckoning skies: these are the images British filmmaker Peter Greenaway collects and dissects in Flying out of This World, the second volume in a series developed by the Louvre and devoted to innovative writing on the visual arts.
As guest curator, Greenaway selected from the Louvre's collection of European prints and drawings ninety-one masterpieces that illustrate the human longing for flight. Greenaway's text, a compilation of brief commentaries that combine description, allusion, and interpretation, illuminate the images as depictions of flight desired and denied. Including works by Redon, Goya, Brueghel, Michelangelo, Mantegna, Rubens, Poussin, and Delacroix, this volume offers a combination of literary and visual art, of sight and insight.
A pursuit through the Bible, classical mythology, cosmology, theology, etymology, ornithology, and meteorology, Flying out of This World is not just an illustrated history of imagined flight, but a meditation on its meaning as a metaphor for the human condition, caught between a weighty body and a soaring spirit.

Each annual volume examines key issues pertinent to the multilateral trading system, as well as regional arrangements and policy developments at the national level. Each volume also provides assessments of the World Trade Organization 's recent Trade Policy Reviews. The 2003 issue focuses on the influence of politics on the operations of the International Monetary Fund. Great!.......1998-07-11
This book is a really comprehensive (maybe a bit too comprehensive!) work on PG's films. It is divided in tidy parts, one part for one feature. There are a few omissions like, PG's exhibitions and more in-depth review of his earlier, more experimental films but the book is truly worthwhile to read as it is. Steinmetz's writings are objective and rewarding. Greenaway's writings, which might be called some kind of background information on the films, are very instructive and thought-provoking. The books biggest plus may be the high quality images from the films and of PG's drawings (which probably serve as personal story-boards). Highly recommended.

Book Description
Sixty percent of adult Americans don't know the name of the president who ordered the dropping of the first atomic bomb, 42% of college seniors can't place the Civil War in the right half-century, and 24% think Columbus discovered America in the 1500s. Meanwhile, more American teenagers can name the Three Stooges than the three branches of the federal government. Applying the metaphor of Alzheimer's disease to our national state of mind, Bertman offers a chilling prognosis for our country's future unless radical steps for recovery are taken. He offers psychological insights into the nature of memory with perspectives on the meaning and future of democracy. With compelling evidence, the book demonstrates that cultural amnesia, like Alzheimer's disease, is an insidiously progressive and debilitating illness that is eating away at America's soul. Rather than superficially blaming memory loss on a failed educational system, Bertman looks beyond the classroom to the larger social forces that conspire to alienate Americans from their past: a materialistic creed that celebrates transience and disposability, and an electronic faith that worships the present to the exclusion of all other dimensions of time.
Customer Reviews:
One of the greatest books I have ever read.......2007-08-08
It truly is a live changing book. I am only 19, but this book has been one of the true foundations I will use for the rest of my life. It has opened up and entire world into understanding and securing my culture. It is a shame not many people will be able to read it, especially my age group. I am trying to get my friends to pick it up, but it is a battle.
I reccommend this for any reader! Do yourself a favor!
Cultural Amnesia: Americas Future and the Crisis of Memory.......2000-07-18
At first glance, I thought certainly I would be disappointed with this book. Not only was it short (and expensive), but broken down into many "sub-chapters". Fortunately I was wrong.
The author begins the book with a necessarily abbreviated synopsis of the history of cultural memory. He then examines how the invention of writing, the printing press, the television, and the internet affect cultural memory.
After establishing that there is a decline in America's basic education level and collective understanding of our culture's history, the author thouroughly examines root causes. He also talks about how losing a sense of cultural heritage, as well as the transfer of basic educational information can negatively affect the U.S.
This book is thoroughly researched, well organized, and ties together well many seemingly unrelated topics.
I highly recommend this book, especially if you are, like me, intent on examining why our mainstream American culture is so mind-boggling ignorant

Customer Reviews:
Too Confusing To Follow.......2007-08-06
The author definitely knows his stuff but does a horrible job relaying it to the reader. He often has you follow steps for creating part of your website and abruptly ends with no final results and suddenly starts a new topic.
This book has some good elements for a reference book, but if you're new to web design and looking for a set-by-step book to build a site in Photoshop and Dreamweaver - this is not the book you want.
This book can give a good solid base to web design beginners!.......2007-07-26
I came across this book after having built three full functioning websites by self-teaching and muddling through the technical difficulties of Dreamweaver. I was already good at Photoshop, by the way, and a graphic designer.
However the more sites I've built, the less confident I was. I felt like I was standing on a non-solid and very shaky ground of technical knowledge in web design. There were things I knew very well, and simple things that I didn't know at all.
So I came across this book "Photoshop and Dreaweaver Integration". Sounded good, so I decided to give it a shot. At the time, this book was already two years old. And I had known before starting that it would only cover the laying-out-by-tables method. There was nothing about layout-by-CSS method, which is growing very strong in these days.
I've had gone through the book page by page carefully. I didn't follow the suggestions of the author trying to design your own website while following the technical guides of the book. Instead I tried to do exactly what the author did in the book. The reason for this is that I just wanted to learn the technical skills. I wanted to know exactly how to do what the author did. I didn't want the design and aesthetic problems get into my way before I got a solid technical skill base. And I was a designer, I wouldn't have to worry that I couldn't create.
So the result of going through the book page by page, twice, is that now I feel very confident as a beginner. The book covers everything that a beginner needs to know: from planning, drafting, make a comprehensive sketch in Photoshop, to transfer it to ImageReady, add button and rollovers, and then transfer again to Dreaweaver, where you can build your template page, build the whole site, add E-commerce and interactive functions, and finding a hosting service.
Many of these things I had already known about, but I still went through them with the book anyway, because then I could see the whole process.
Of course there's a lot ahead for me to learn, like laying out with CSS, but I'm not anxious anymore about the shaky ground that I once stood on.
I hope the author will update the book with new knowledge. But for now it is still a good book for starters.
Fantastic Book.......2007-02-28
I have very little knowledge on web design, the last page I built was with FrontPage 2000 and it was as basic and boring as possible. After going through this book I have made drastic improvements to the quality of my site and my comfort level with Dreamweaver has increased immensely!
If you are new to web design and want to learn how to create a web site from a basic picture all the way to getting the site uploaded to your host, this is the book for you.
This is the one for me..........2007-01-29
This book is perfect for those of us just starting out in web page creation. The book walks you through all the steps used in Photoshop, and then continues with the Dreamweaver portion. I had actually purchased several other books on the topic, but quickly dropped them for this one due to its step-by-step explanations.
Great Starter Book for Photoshop and Dreamweaver Fans!.......2006-11-07
This book was a great starter and just want I needed. It has full color photos which provide very helpful information about some best design pratices to use. This book requires some working knowledge of using Photoshop, not recommended for total newbee. Tells how to use roll overs, tables. Gives a good tutorial of creating website from start to finish in Adobe and then transfers to Dreamweaver.
