1 out of 5 stars Ugh. I"m returning this........2001-09-28

After a very shallow description of the types of resorts, and a plea for developers to be more sensitive to the natural environment, the book glosses over the huge planning phase and goes into how to turn a profit once the doors are open. All of the steps in between are dismissed with the understanding that you'll hire various teams of professionals to handle them. But THAT's what I wanted to know!

5 out of 5 stars Charming, but with a point.......2005-02-27

This is one of the late Pogo books, from the early 70s, and captures all the best there is of Pogo. It has a gentle mood, but still makes its points about our wasteful society (and who to blame). It also lampoons the political figures of the day, seriously, but with a light touch that today's cartoonists can't match.

Pogo is one of the best-loved comics ever, and this book shows why. Enjoy!

There just ain't no better than vintage Pogo. He's just as good as we'll ever get. Makes the swamp we all live in look better thru Ol' Pogo's eyes. You can see things the way they really are!

        5 out of 5 stars amazing later-years Pogo.......2000-02-14

This book has some of the most intelligent writing andbeautiful/creepy art in the Pogo canon. It's not very wacky, but whatit might lack in goofy friendliness it more than makes up for in elegance and subtle satire. If you like Stanley Kubrick's anti-war movies you should check this out -- not to say you won't still like it even if you hate Kubrick.

        5 out of 5 stars Vintage.......1999-02-27

If this be out of print, Pogo fans should track it down any way they can. This is Kelly's later years masterpiece, a skillful skewering of the entire Watergate mess, with an antipollution bit thrown in for good measure. As usual the artwork is stunning.

            Book Description

There's no place like home for the holidays ...which is a good thing when you have a family like Robert Earl Keen's. As Keen tells it in this wry send-up of all those impossibly sweet, "not like our family" Christmas carols, Mom and Dad got drunk at the Christmas party, sister and brother brought their dubious significant others, the relatives' motor home blew out the Christmas lights, and a convenience store supplied all the goodies.

Merry Christmas from the Family is the companion book for Robert Earl Keen's popular Christmas tune of the same name. Using authentic Keen family photos, recipes, and craft instructions, it illustrates all the verses of the song, which you can sing along with on the accompanying CD. Whether you're one of Robert Earl's legion of fans, or you've just had enough of Perry, Bing, and the other crooners, Merry Christmas from the Family is what you need to keep the holidays in hilariously skewed perspective.

            5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-18

I have always loved this song and was so glad that I bought this release with the book. The song is even better after reading the book.

5 out of 5 stars Hallelujah, Everybody Say Cheese..........2005-12-07

I have loved "Merry Christmas From the Family" by Robert Earl Keen since the very first time I ever heard it. I was initially exposed to this song on a cable access TV show, "Viva and Jerry's Country Videos" (which is hilarious in its own right). I hadn't caught the name of the artist, so I called Viva herself and she told me to look up Robert Earl Keen. I did so, bought a couple of albums and generally liked them, but this song (and his video that goes with it) remains my favorite of his works.

This book/CD combination is very nicely produced and is basically a funny color collage telling the story of the song. The CD has my favorite version of the song on it so you can follow along if you want, or more likely just listen and laugh.

I have given several of these as gifts over the last few years and they always get rave reviews. It's kind of sad that there is more than a little truth in the song, but nonetheless it's funny, dryly tongue-in-cheek, and very well done. While this may never overtake "Silent Night" or "O Come All Ye Faithful" in the pantheon of the world's most popular Christmas songs, it has a unique charm that is like nothing else, and I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Great stocking stuffer or intro to REK for your friends.......2002-01-03

Well, Robert Earl Keen himself said this was more of a greeting card than great literature. I think it's a delightful presentation of one of REK's best-loved songs. It's chockful of lyrics, pictures (did you know that Fran and Rita are both women?), recipes (for all those great drinks sung about), lists (10 Things You Can Do with Fake Snow, 10 Things You Won't Find in a Convenience Store), and Texas-style fun. And it includes a CD to boot, so you can listen while you read along. This is a hoot--and at this price, you can buy one for yourself and all your friends. Spread the love from the fam-o-lee!

5 out of 5 stars Laugh until you cry.......2001-12-24

This is by far the funniest thing I have seen, heard, and read in a long, long time! A must have for anyone with a sense of humor!

5 out of 5 stars The Looking Glass reflection of my life!.......2001-11-11

If you are a fan of Rober Earl Keen- I mean a fan of all his stuff from the rowdy staples "Road Goes on Forever" and "Copenhagen" to the skillfull subtle songwriting exhibited in No Kinda Dancer, and West Textures.

If this is you, then you will aprreciate this book. In short it is a hysterically illustrated version, verse by verse of his epic Chrismas Song "Merry Christmas From the Family". It is designed by esteemed Nashville graphic designer Buddy Jackson, and it is done with wit and humor in keeping with the songs' lyrics.(...)

To coincide with the big-screen release of Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, Dark Horse released both a graphic novelization of the movie and this, a separate miniseries set decades later. Collecting all three issues of The Human War, this trade paperback follows the progress of a brutal civil war between human guerillas (along with their sympathetic ape compatriots) and a beefy, well-armed gorilla army. Things aren't going so well on the simian side, and there's even been some grumbling in the senate about negotiating with the human rabble. The descendants of some of the movie's main players--including the evil Minister Shiva, mongrel granddaughter of General Thade--duke it out in a war that threatens to escalate to genocide. --Paul Hughes

              Book Description

Several decades after human astronaut Leo Davidson`s adventure on the ape world, ape society has been torn apart from within by a horrible civil war that`s erupted between ape rebels advocating human integration and the fearful but powerful ape regime. Is the ape Seneca and his scattered but loyal followers of humans and apes enough to defeat the charismatic Shiva and her imposing ape army? The conflict has reached a bloody stalemate. But Shiva has a deadly secret that will end the war...and wipe out mankind! After all, the only good human is a dead human!

If they would only make a movie of the book - now that would be fantastic...the other two movies have their place and are fun but a movie that actually matched the book would be impressive and given the story line not hard to accomplish.

1 out of 5 stars The Lost War.......2004-05-14

I was very disappointed with this comic. The art is very nice. However, the story is dribble. The writer assumes that you've seen the new movie and know the past characters.
Not very well written or creative. Good for a collectors item though I guess.

              1 out of 5 stars It's a MADHOUSE!!!! A MADHOUSE!!!!.......2002-06-24

Planet of the Apes: The Human War commits the cardinal sin for a movie tie-in: It assumes you've seen the movie, and loved it so much that you'll buy into a story that really has nothing in common with it except the basic framework.

Considering that Tim Burton's film wasn't well received by either critics OR fans (I liked it, though!), maybe Dark Horse's decision to have this book revolve around a trip to Calima (Astronaut Leo Davidson's downed ship, from which all Ape and Human life on the planet evolved) wasn't such a good idea...Why not? Well, because they assume the reader KNOWS what Calima IS, and what it's secret is, so they never tell us...we're just supposed to KNOW. I knew, and I was still unsatisfied, so I can imagine how a casual reader would feel after putting this book down. I was also disturbed by the totally out-of-place art, and the slang the Human characters use...."I am SO gonna kick your butt!!" doesn't scream out Planet of the Apes to me...it screams out sloppy writing, which surprised me, since I only bought the book because of Writer Ian Edginton, who is usually rock-solid.
All in all, a terrible effort, which makes it easy to see why Dark Horse's Ape revival only lasted a pitiful six issues. Avoid at all costs!

3 out of 5 stars Not great but entertaining.......2002-03-11

I picked up this comic book since I liked Tim Burton's movie a lot and wanted to read some other stories in this world.

It takes place at least 40-50 years after the movie. The main characters are grandsons of some of the characters from the movie.

The story is pretty interesting. I liked how it was linked up with the movie. The characters were fairly good.

The artwork is somewhat cartoony and not for all tastes. I found it to be satisfactory. Because it has more of a cartoon feel, it is colorful and also clear. Although I like lots of detail in comic art, sometimes it gets annoying in the action when everything is too cluttered. This comic avoids that.

Regarding the content: there is some graphic violence and some brief cursing.

All in all it was a brisk, entertaining read. Followed by an on-going monthly series published by Dark Horse, which continues with this story and characters. I read the first three issues of that series and found it to be along the same quality, perhaps a little better.

Worth checking out if your an APES fan. If not, you might want to steer clear of this.

Anything that could have possibly gone wrong since The Human War did. The human rebel Esau and the ape leader Seneca are facing a trial for crimes against the ape state. Once triumphant, they now await a hangman's noose. Never in their wildest dreams did they think they would be rescued mere seconds from certain death by the once great gorilla warrior, Attar! But Attar has an ulterior motive. Usually reclusive, he has received a cryptic message that could finally lead him to his friend, the long-disappeared chimp, Ari. Soon hunted by the implacable Commander Kharim, Esau, Seneca, and Attar head deep into the uncharted wilds where they find a besieged outpost of apes and humans, masters and servants, fighting side by side in a battle with a primal, ancient evil...one that reveals the dark side to the origins of ape and human alike!

                    Book Description

John Dickson Carr is known as the master of the “locked-room” mystery—the “impossible crime.” But Carr also wrote short stories, radio plays, essays, introductions, and book reviews. S. T. Joshi has written the first full-length study of Carr’s entire work and pays particular attention to this author’s three best-known detectives: Henri Bencolin, Dr. Gideon Fell, and Sir Henry Merrivale.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful designs, excellent sizes!.......2001-10-03

The floral representations are beautiful, and the designs are the perfect size for most hand-worked embroidery projects. Unlike many iron on transfer floral designs, the patterns are not overly large. These designs are elegant and realistic looking, and will be stitched into beautiful and sentimental projects. I liked it so much this is my SECOND purchase of this book of designs (my embroidery students like them too!).

Microsoft's Component Object Model is one of the most important concepts in software development today. Developer's Workshop to COM and ATL 3.0 provides an in-depth treatment of COM and shows how to adopt a component framework, namely ATL, to help lessen the burden of repetitive code. Every chapter contains integrated lab assignments that give you numerous opportunities to build COM clients and servers using raw C++ and IDL, as well as the Active Template Library.

                    5 out of 5 stars Must Have.......2007-01-16

This book is the perfect example of a good "Computer" book: It teaches what it needs to teach in a way you understand.
It covers all the important stuf like BSTRs, Smart Pointers, DCOM, TLBs, IDLs and other buzz-like acronyms.
I used it as an only reference for learning COM and I was doing complex COM projects within weeks. Andrew Troelsen is 'the man'!

                    Best regards,

5 out of 5 stars This book is GREAT!.........2006-07-05

Apart from the fact that so many customers gave 5 stars to this book, there's another indicator of its value: it looks like nobody wants to resell it after they are done reading it. I, for one, intend to keep it for reference...

I've been programming in C# for a few years, and now I needed to learn COM. This book was the best tech manual I've ever read.

My recommendation is: if you need to learn COM, do not waste your money on any other book until you've read this one.

                    5 out of 5 stars outstanding.......2006-03-04

I NEVER write reviews; however Mr. Troelsen for this effort has earned it. He has written by far one of the best written tech books on C programming I've ever read, and for COM/ATL this book makes writing interfaces for VB both understandable and accessible. Coverage and background is sufficient, and equally important for those who don't do this every day for a living, the depth in setting up projects in Visual Studio is also there so one unfamiliar with technical setup issues involved in setting up an ATL COM project are enabled to create their own. All I can say is well done, please keep up the good work, very much appreciated. Looking forward to your next releases.

                    Sincerely,
Dr. Mathew G. Pelletier, Research Engineer

5 out of 5 stars Classic COM and ATL book.......2006-02-16

Describe low level COM and then ATL internals and interfaces which can let reader easily understand such complex mechanism. Though the book is a little bit old, it can still be served as a good reference.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, maybe not for the absolute beginner.......2005-08-02

My current project at work required me to learn COM. I purchased several books to assist in the learning, and I must say that this book is absolutely indispensible, both as an instructional medium and as a reference. I highly recommend this book to anyone needing to learn about COM.

What's inside? It starts with a basic intro to COM, useful (dare I say it) for managers as well as the developer to get the big picture. Then it goes into a discussion of ATL and design patterns. This second section is incredibly important since ATL is for COM as STL is for C++. It finishes off with some of the more advanced areas of study in COM. Only a few advanced topics are not covered (custom marshalling for one), but considering it starts from an assumed ignorance of COM, it does reach a good level of detail.

Who am I? I studied computer science in University. However, I had never previously developped on Windows. I am primarily a C++ programmer, with some experience with Java. Knowledge of C++ (I would say more than just a familiarity) should be a prereq. to reading, but that's about it. It introduces most OO topics you need in the first chapters that most experienced developers can probably skip.
