Book Description
Chock-Full of Straight Talk About America. . . And Some Jokes, Too!
Larry the Cable Guy on . . .
NASCAR: It’s a lotta good old-fashioned fun started by a buncha moonshiners. Just seein’ all the ZZ Top–lookin’ folks drinkin’ beer, havin’ a good time, and not givin’ a darn is awesome. And that’s just the women!
Dieting: I once went on the “liquid diet.” I was supposed to drink nothin’ but liquids for a week. But I got so drunk and sick of that Jim Beam and Coke, I’ll never drink it again.
Why his catchphrase “git-r-done” is better than other catchphrases: Ya can’t be at a ball game with two outs in the ninth inning and yell to the pitcher “Bounty is the quicker picker-upper!!” It makes no sense. But you could yell “Git-r-done” and everyone would know what you meant.
The red state–blue state divide: Is Dr. Seuss runnin’ the government?
Larry’s mom on Larry’s book: “There’s really not much I can say here except for I apologize to everyone ahead of time for the crap you are about to read.” —Larry’s mom

Larry the Cable Guy is one of America’s funniest—and most successful—stand-up comedians, appearing solo and as part of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. Larry’s debut CD, Lord, I Apologize (2001), was in the top 20 on the comedy charts for nearly two full years and has been RIAA-certified gold. In 2003, a Comedy Central airing of Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie was the highest-rated movie in the network’s history. A year later, Larry released Larry the Cable Guy: Git-R-Done on DVD, which sold more than a million and a half copies, and since then he’s become part of the highly rated television show Blue Collar TV. His latest CD, The Right to Bare Arms, is the only comedy album ever to debut at number one on the country charts, where it stayed for four weeks, and is also RIAA-certified gold. Git-R-Done is his first book.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Larry's book is good........2007-05-14
I'm not the leading authority on comedy, but i did enjoy Larry's book. The one problem i do have is that i hate the word "retard" and this book has that word on almost every page.
But enough of the negative. The book is damn hilarious, and Larry does deserve the fame he's got and is getting. He has worked hard for it, and even his book shows his talent worth.
It's Comedy. Deal With It.......2007-02-20
The reviewer that wrote that the book is disingenuous must be an uptight New England Liberal or something.
It's COMEDY! It ain't rocket science.
We all know that Larry the Cable Guy's real name ain't Larry. So what? John Wayne's real name was MARION!
The book is hilarious. It's hard to read all at once, though. I had to give my abs some rest from laughing so hard.
[Note to parents: the material in the book is NOT for kids.]
Fun for small minds.......2007-02-19
To sum it up quite clearly, I don't like this kind of humor. It's dishonest and "Larry the cable Guy" is closer to the comedy of Andrew Dice Clay than anyone else, and he also claims that the person on stage is not the same as the man doing the show.
Right.
I didn't think it was possible to distill mental retardation and place it into a book, but here it is.
I tried to find out why people thought this guy was funny. I know now. They're stupid. The typical fan of Larry the Cable Guy lacks sophistication and wit, and observations beyond "Okay, I was lying" make thier minds hurt because it requires some thought.
A real waste, unless of course, you like this kind of tripe.
Disingenuous pandering, but hey, private jets need fuel........2006-11-18
This book was not actually written by "Larry the Cable Guy," but a gentleman named Dan Whitney. Whitney is the human being who plays the character "Larry the Cable Guy" in concerts, movies, TV shows, CDs, and now this book. What Dan Whitney really thinks about anything is up for conjecture, but he certainly knows what he wants people to think his character "Larry the Cable Guy" thinks. In that way, this book succeeds marvelously, it makes fun of all the things Whitney has observed as making LTCG fans mad, and like president they all voted for, he tells them what something is and whether it is good, bad, or funny (i.e., jesus = good, fart = funny, being retarded = funny, not supporting the Bush administration = bad) and requires only confirmation by repetition of the catch phrase title of the book, and purchase of sundry items bearing the same inscription. It is brilliantly targeted and presented for maximum cash-in value, with very little discussion and no thought involved at all. It is the easiest thing in the world to be a Larry fan because you don't even have to know what is funny, good, or bad, just wait for Larry to sum it up in the simplest little joke imaginable. That is because he has calculated that if he talks in a thick southern accent (the origin of which is never revealed because it is an amalgam) people will think "wow, he really must be a down to earth fellow to unabashadly parade his hick background instead of trying to "unhickify" himself to reach a wider audience. The unhickified Dan Whitney was boring and not funny, so he devised the Larry character to play on people who thought a brash, "honest" guy from the south was more funny. It's a beautiful formula, and Larry is a gazillionaire as a result. He may have paid a few visits to a Waffle House to take notes, but you can be assured that establishment does not cater the spread on Dan Whitney's Gulfstream V.
So if you're wondering whether Larry sounds like he's from east Texas, western Louisiana, central Alabama, northeast Arkansas, Northen Florida, southern South Carolina, or smack dab in the middle of Georgia, don't labor too hard, he comes from Nebraska and the accent is fake. Just like all the heartfelt nonsense in this book he is simply describing what he thinks the big fans of LTCG want to hear. So if you want to be told what you want to hear by what is basically a cartoon character, instead of engaging in thought about a real human being, then welcome to the world of Larry The Cable Guy. Just like Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, and Jesus, he's not real. Is that un-PC enough for you, Dan?
Laughing so hard I;m doing #1 in my uderbritches.......2006-11-17
Just when you thought you've heard all Larry has to offer... it gets WAY better... I've only just started reading it the past 2 days, but I have to say it.. I DON'T CARE WHO YOU ARE THAT'S FUNY RIGHT THERE!!!!!
He's got hte downhome Good Ole Boy humor mixed 9at least i see it that way) with a good interpretation of how ALL "blue coller" working class people are. I may be a yankee.. but I'm from the great city of PITTSBURGH PENNSYLVANIA..... AND WE LIVE AND THRIVE ON GOOD OLE AMERICAN LIVING. Funny how Redneck verbage and Pittsburghese IS errily SIMILAR. Makes me PROUD to wave, wear and salute the red white and blue.

Yes, I read this, why, I don't know........2001-08-03
I won't go as low as hating it but I was stretching it by giving it two stars. More like 1 1/2. I never saw the movie so I have no idea which is better but if the big screen version was the same as the book, then I can understand why my friends said it was terrible and don't bother seeing it. This book was boring from page one. I'm one of those people who have to finish a book once I start reading it so I had no way out but to read to the end. The main character comes across as a complete nutter to be honest. A lonely nutter at that. He decides to befriend one of his customers who really wants nothing to do with the cable guy. As much as he tries, he can't rid himself of him though. And that's the whole plot of the book! Pretty exciting huh! NOT. Don't bother. Unless you see it for a penny at a yard sale.
Better than the movie.......2001-01-24
The cable guy by Harriet Grey was just like the movie, it was exactly the same. The book was a lot better than the movie just because the book went more into detail why things where going on. The book was very funny, if your like comedys this book is for you, also if you like serous movies because you could kind of take it as a syco type movie. But I think its better for people who like comedys.
Better than the movie.......2000-08-13
I think this book was based on the movie (or is it the other way around?). In my opinion, it is way better than the movie, which I found to be pretty dull. It doesn't have any slow parts, and the climax is truely exciting...you'll want to read it again and again. I read this book two times, it's really good.
But unfourtunate for you, this book is out of print. Good luck finding it.
good.......2000-04-02
a good book like the movie. it is the screenplay.

From the supplier: White House correspondent Brian Williams of NBC News played a hunch on the future success of cable television by moving from an established broadcast network to a job as anchor on MSNBC, a news cable channel started jointly by NBC and Microsoft. However, it was not such a risky undertaking because Williams, 37, is in line to become Tom Brokaw's replacement when he retires. Williams will be able to move back to Connecticut and spend more time with his wife and children.

Synopsis.......2007-07-09
This scholarly essay in intellectual progress over the chess board shows how the pessimists who thought chess played out - destined to become victim to the death of a thousand draws - were refuted by the dynamic risky games of Alexander Alekhine, whose legacy lived on in the games of Soviet and Russian champions such as Mikhail Tal. With computers taking an ever increasing role in modern chess and challenging the modern champions Kasparov and Kramnik, the author's thoughts on the inexhaustible creative potential of chess assume even greater significance. R.N.Coles was a chess writer of great distinction with a number of books to his credit, including a biography of the Indian genius Sultan Khan, and co-authorship with Ray Keene of the standard biography of Howard Staunton. Coles was a regular contributor to the British Chess Magazine and Dynamic Chess is his acknowledged masterpiece.
Dynamic Chess.......2000-04-01
This is a very interesting and well written book on chess. It shows the evolution of many openings and concentrates on the contributions made to these openings by the Russians in the first part of the 20th century, up to the 1960's. The book is divided into two parts. The first part describes the evolution of hypermodernism. The second part is about the Russian school. It shows how the Russians took openings that were considered inferior, because of structural weaknesses, and revitalized them by learning to exploit the dynamic chances available in the positions (particularly the Kings Indian and Sicilian defenses). The chapters are categorized by opening. The book uses grandmaster sample games to show ideas. Another interesting point of the book is that it gives a historical perspective on how Russian chess rose from the ashes to become the dominating power of the chess world. Very interesting for those of us who were not alive back then.
Book Description
The Domain Name System (DNS) is the system created to map domain names to IP addresses, and is largely responsible for the widespread popularity of the Internet due to the convenience it offers in calling system resources by an easily recognizable name rather than a cryptic number. Given the critical nature of this technology for ensuring smooth operation of Internet-based resources such as Web and mail servers, it’s imperative that users fully understand key configuration, management and security principles.
Pro DNS and BIND guides readers through the often challenging array of features surrounding DNS with a special focus on the World’s most diffuse DNS implementation, BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain). Readers will learn not only about key DNS concepts, but also how to effectively install, configure, deploy and manage BIND in enterprise environments.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book for both novice and expert!.......2006-12-13
This is by far the best book available on DNS. It is very informative and yet the reading style is entertaining (not fluffy though). Overall, it is a joy to read. The author is able to communicate effectively to both the expert and the novice. Look no further than here for a great DNS reference book. Way to go Ron Aitchison!
Definitely the Best!.......2006-07-06
Ron Aitchison's Pro DNS and BIND packs a whopping 550 pages of material which is easy to read for the novice or ongoing DNS administrator, and which is very well written (I greatly enjoyed the author's style). After a short introduction in which I learnt some interesting facts about the provisioning of the root servers, the author implements a first zone describing the necessary concepts such as resource records, queries and zone transfers very clearly, followed by the different types of DNS setups (master, slave, caching, forwarding and stealth servers); these are covered in depth in chapter 7. Chapter five covers IPv6 and its relevance to BIND. Throughout the book, references to other DNS server implementations are given, but the primary focus is of course BIND 9.3.0.
Aitchison leads the reader through detailed installation of BIND on Linux, FreeBSD and even Windows (ISC has an installer for Windows in its portfolio), after which common DNS tasks are discussed (how to delegate a subdomain, how to define SPF records, etc. read it on-line here) as well as a chapter on tools.
The third part of the book is dedicated to securing DNS configurations with topics ranging from simple administrative issues (chroot jails) through securing DNS updates and zone transfers with TSIG and DNSSEC.bis which is covered very extensively in chapter 11.
Chapters 12 and 13 provide extensive commented references on BIND configuration and Zone files. There is of course plenty of on-line reference information on these two topics (including the author's very good DNS for Rocket Scientists) but I like to have reference information on hardcopy (in the event my DNS servers fail, and I can't reach the on-line documentation :-) )
In part 5 the author shortly covers programming with the BIND API and the resolver libraries, and he follows that with an interesting chapter on DNS Messages and Records, good to have if you want to sniff your way through DNS traffic.
The publisher's web site carries a sample chapter as well as the source code to the book which is also available in TAR format on the author's web site together with complementary information and pointers to further resources.
My only complaint about this otherwise excellent book is that on two or three occasions I read a paragraph that I thought I'd just read before; some duplication must have taken place (or I was tired). For the next edition, I'd like to read a chapter on interoperability between BIND and Microsoft Windows DNS servers, specifically regarding DNSSEC.
This book is an absolute must have for anybody who needs to understand DNS in the first place (irrespective of the implementation he or she plans to use), and it is a must have for a systems administrator who is either intending to deploy or has already deployed BIND 9.3. I wish I'd read this book before the first mentioned above.
Online VS. Hardcopy version.......2006-01-31
After reading several of the chapter sections at the authors website, I needed a bit more understanding about how to install and configure Bind 9 onto our Windows box. I wanted to use Bind on old hardware running NT4. I fired off an email to the author and got several pointers that fixed the problems I was having. I realized the pointers he had given me were all covered in his book. After purchasing the book, I not only found out lots of stuff about what all the parameters are but also discovered how to manage bind over the LAN in a secure way. This book is a must have for anyone that wants to use Bind 9 for the first time. It has helped me several times already.
To understand DNS and BIND get this book!.......2005-12-12
The Domain Name System is a critical component of any large network or any computer connected to the Internet. While a home user would not need to setup a DNS server, business networks of any significant size would benefit from an internal server, DNS caching router or other components. This book takes the reader through a very good explanation of DNS and BIND, how it works, how to set it up, how to test it, and how to troubleshoot it. There are many books on DNS and BIND but most either assume a certain level of prior knowledge, provide theory without implementation information, or provide implementation information without any theory so you have no idea how to troubleshoot a problematic implementation. Author Ron Aitchison does an excellent job of discussing both theory and implementation in this book so you end up with a thorough education. He even covers the implementation of a secure DNS server. This book actually takes the reader from a level of complete novice through advanced DNS administrator and does an excellent job of it. Pro DNS and BIND is highly recommended and one of the better books on the subject available.
GREAT Book about DNS and BIND!!.......2005-11-30
while the reference from Paul Albitz/Cricket Liu is sometimes hard to read and long winded, this text from Mr. Aitchinson covers everything and yet stays very clear and simple. I could configure and start a caching only DNS server in less than 30 minutes (well, after omitting the first few introductory chapters ;-). If you want to look up sth., there is also a big reference section. There is also an errata-page at:
http://www.netwidget.net/books/apress/dns/notes.html
I also found this book *much* more useful as the first, because of the fact that it is much more up-to-date!
I can recommend this book to everyone, who
*) wants to install/configure/start/maintain a DNS server
*) wants to get informed about the Domain Name System in general
Up to now, this book is really an insiders' tip!!
