        Book Description

A century ago, the forces of darkness overran Eredane and subjugated all its peoples to the will of the dark god Izrador. Almost. In what remains of their mountain holdfasts in the Kaladruns, the dwarves still resist. It has been barely a dwarven generation since the Shadow fell, and living dwarves still remember freedom. They have the finest weapons and armor on the face of Aryth, traps devilish enough to kill a thousand orcs, and a legendary stubbornness in the face of adversity. It is not enough. Every day in the world of Midnight the dwarves are losing their war against the numberless servants of Izrador. Hammer and Shadow includes: Dozens of forces, NPCs, and location descriptions for the Kaladrun Mountains and the armies that assault them. Maps, adventure hooks, and local rumors to incorporate into any Midnight campaign. New feats, prestige classes, charms, and equipment for both the brave defenders of the Kaladruns and the savage minions intent on destroying them.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but could have been better..........2007-07-15

Ever since the box set Fury of Shadow, detailing the forest of the elves of Erethor in the Midnight campaign setting, the fans of Midnight have fantasized about a similar product that would focus on the dwarves of the Kaladruns. This did not come, but a product about the dwarves was produced: Hammer and Shadow.

Hammer and Shadow is the 14th in the line of supplement for the Midnight line detailing the continent of Eredane after its conquest by the dark god Izrador. Following the same pattern as other Midnight supplements, Hammer is a 64-page, black and white soft-cover.

The cover art is, as usual, in full color depicting a single hammer wielding dwarf surrounded by dead orcs at the entrance to what appears to be a dwarven-hold. While the drawing is moody enough and fitting to the whole Midnight feel, the dwarf to me seems a bit... unnatural. Sure, dwarves are supposed to be short and heavily muscled but this one seems to be taken to the extreme with huge arms and hands. Perhaps he got some spell on him, I don't know.

The interior art is great, depicting both the dwarves and their enemies in equal measure. The regional maps, on the other hand, are bad; even bearing in mind that this review is of a PDF version of the product, the maps still are worse than other I've seen in PDF products. These maps appear to be just blown-up images from the main Midnight map that appeared in the Midnight 2nd edition book; hence they are fuzzy and appear out of focus, with only the symbols for the different villages, forts, ruins, etc. along with their names appearing sharp because they were plainly added on top of the original map. I believe FFG could have invested a bit more and drawn better, more detailed, maps for this product.

The book is divided into six chapters, but really has three main parts: the dwarves and their history, the current situation in the Kaladruns, and new rules.

Chapter 1 goes into great detail to describe the dwarven way of life. Everything from how they act within their own clans and other clans, to how they treat other races and the half breeds among them. Their language, government, beliefs and gender relations are all treated here, as well as a better understanding of the difference between Kurgan and Clan dwarves. Major dwarven and non-dwarven settlement are also described and given a short history. I think this chapter is great, and while not all information in it should be available to the players, a DM should consider giving any dwarf player a large part of this information so as to give the player a better understanding of the dwarven culture. And of course, for any NPC the DM is running.

Chapter 2 is all about dwarven history... war history at any rate. The dwarves have been fighting amongst themselves and with the orcs for almost 10,000 years after all. The chapter goes through the Ages of Eredane, and after each Age a defining battle in the dwaren history is shortly described whether it went well or not for the dwarves. The chapter is interesting enough, showing us how the dwarves came to be as they are in this Last Age of Eredane, after thousands of years of constant warfare.

Chapters 3 to 5 each focus on a different area of the Kaladruns Mountains going progressively from the north, to the central Kaladruns, and finally to the southern Kaladruns. These chapters describe nicely and in detail the history of the war in the area along with the plans ahead with each chapter further divided to focus on the Shadow's forces, their tactics, important personas, and locations, and with the same treatment given to the dwarves later. It might have been a matter of space, but I liked the fact that of the many possible NPCs detailed in this chapter, no space was wasted on their stats, and hence more space was used to portray the land and forces, instead each NPC mentioned had in parenthesis race, class, and level. Only the dragon Arynix, one of the Shadows' best weapon in the area, was detailed and stated and that is due to the simple fact that dragons in Midnight are treated differently (their abilities have no connection to their color).

Chapter 6 is all about new rules specifically made for the dwarves and fighting in the Kaladruns. The complementary handful of feats along with two new Prestige Classes (the Ancestral Foe, self explanatory, which can be taken by either orcs of dwarves; and the Dwarven Loremaster, the dwarven channeler with the ability to etch powerful rune magic).

Also we are presented with Dwarvencraft Techniques which can be learned with an appropriate feat, a teacher, and the investment of some time and a few XP points. These techniques serves to show the excellence of the dwarven smiths; making weapons, armors, or items, more durable, sharper, better wielding, lighter, and more, without resorting to magecraft and enchantment, something the dwarves are no entirely trusting of. I'm not sure how much benefit a PC will garner from these techniques, but a DM could certainly use these guidelines to gift his PCs with good, non-magical, dwarven made weapons.

Tunnel Craft is a nice section describing innovative ideas the dwarves have come up with to better communicate and move around in their tunnels. Some optional rules are recommended to make fighting in the close-quarters in the belly of the Kaladruns more interesting, such as the possibility that a weapon would shatter on the walls after a natural 1 on an attack roll, or the best weapons to be used while fighting in cramped spaces.

Finally the Appendix takes a chapter out of the Fury of Shadow box set and gives an arc by arc account of the great and final attack (at least that is what the Shadow's minions hope) on the dwarves. It is written short and to the point describing the two main fronts, central and southern Kaladruns, and gives the reader both a feeling of despair and a glimmer of hope.

The focus of this book is clearly on the war being constantly fought on, and bellow, the Kaladruns, with every persona and location described in terms of what he, she or it has to offer to the war effort. What was missing for me from this book were places that might exist simply because they are there, or local legends and tales that might or might not be true but could certainly have an impact on the world of Midnight. These things, and others like them, are usually used to better flesh out the area described in the Midnight supplements; and while Hammer and Shadow is well written and interesting, these "branching out" of the main story of struggle that is Midnight were distinctly missing (for me) here. Other people, of course, might feel differently.

Like I said, this is a good book, and if you are a Midnight DM and are running a campaign in the area of the Kaladruns, or just want better knowledge of the dwarven culture, this is a good purchase. For those not playing in the dark and excellent world of Midnight, you would probably not miss out on much.

          1 out of 5 stars Horrendously inaccurate.......2001-02-18

I happen to have first-hand knowledge of what went on in the making of this movie, and this book bears no resemblance to that. It's inaccurate to the point of being slanderous to some involved. This book is just ignorant gloss designed created in hopes of recouping some of the buckets of money that were lost on this film. The movie cost about $30-35 million and still hasn't earned half of that back in the US. Of course there's overseas, but unfortunately the film was pre-sold over there so there's no more money to be made. The descriptions of the live action shoot and of what went on with the effects displays more imaginative fantasy than there was in either the writing or (especially) the directing of the film. Save your money. But then I'm sure you knew that already. PS: If I were allowed to give this book 0 stars, I would have.

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome ^^.......2001-01-10

I got this book after I saw the movie for the 3rd time. I was interested in how they made the movie with all the cool stunts and stuff. I was surprised to learn that most of the actors did their own stunts and the two things about the making of this movie that had me the most surprised were the fact that the actor that played Ridley did all his own stunts, including the axe jumping sceen in the Thives Maze. Another part was in the part of the movie where the characters Elwood, Ridley, Snails and Marina went into the sewer under Sumdall that it was really a real sewer. The book also tells how they created the red and gold dragons and other stuff. This book is a diffent must have for any Dungeons and Dragons movie fan.

          Book Description

The profound influence of jazz in French culture is addressed in this examination of the heterogeneous array of symbols that France associates with the art form. Since its debut at the end of World War I, jazz in France has embodied modernity, sexual liberation, and the promise of America, while also signifying an encroachment of American culture, African primitivism, social decadence, and moral decay. This study analyzes the production and reception of these symbolic associations as they appear in French cinema, music, literature, and cultural icons from de Beauvoir to Derrida.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good book that goes well with Vian's 'Manual of Saint-Germain-des-Pres.......2005-12-02

Well, this book came to me at the right time. In fact it would make a nice companion piece to the "Manual of Saint-Germain-des-Prés." Colin Nettelbeck's "Dancing With DeBeauvoir" is an incredible social history of Jazz in French culture - and how it affected literature, films, and of course the night life in our neighborhood of choice, Saint-Germain-des-Pres. Nettelbeck gives a fascinating background on how and where Jazz ended up in France - and how it affected key figures of French culture in the early 20th Century.

The heart of the book of course is Boris Vian and his social world - which did a lot to promote American Jazz artists in Paris. But also special mention to two key figures, Hugues Panassié and Charles Delaunay who really started the ball rolling with respect to introducing the aesthetics of Jazz to their fellow citizens. Reading about Panassé and Delaunay's running disagreement about New Orleans Jazz (Panassié only liked that type of Jazz) and Be-Bop (Delaunay a fan but also admired the Trad artists as well) is both amusing and how both were passionate about music.

This is a first-rate book that also covers Louis Malle and Jean-Luc Godard's interest in using Jazz as soundtrack music to their films. After reading the book, I am more than ever fascinated with Paris via 1950's.

What do such celebrities as actor Dustin Hoffman, radio host Garrison Keillor, former Vice President Dan Quayle, and writer Ayn Rand have in common? They're all quoted in cryptograms! Each celebrity's words appear on his or her birthday, and there's a quotation for every day of the year. There are two other sections to help "clue" you into the puzzles. Once you've unraveled the mystery, you'll know director Cecile B. De Mille's thoughts on filmmaking; Michael Jordan's feelings about hard work; attorney Clarence Darrow's view of the presidency; food writer James Beard's sly comments on cannibalism; Harry Truman's distinction between recession and depression; David Byrne's and Bono's opinions on music; and Marilyn Monroe's downbeat description of Hollywood. Every cryptogram has a different code, of course, so you'll have to tackle each one separately!

          Book Description

Juniper Networks family of NetScreen and SSG Firewalls are second only to Cisco in worldwide unit sales. These devices are becoming increasingly sophisticated as threats to networks continue to grow exponentially. This is the essential reference for any IT professional responsible for configuring and managing the devices.

Configuring Juniper Networks NetScreen & SSG Firewalls is the only complete reference to this family of products. It covers all of the newly released features of the product line as highlighted by Juniper Networks, including:

Deep Inspection firewall extends stateful inspection to detect application level attacks and stop them at the network perimeter.

Integrated Intrusion Prevention for unmatched application-level protection against worms, Trojans, Spyware and malware in the enterprise, carrier and data center environments.

Centralized, policy-based management minimizes the chance of overlooking security holes by simplifying roll-out and network-wide updates.

Virtualization technologies make it easy for administrators to divide the network into secure segments for additional protection.

Built-in high availability features allow pairs of devices to be deployed together to eliminate single points of failure

Rapid Deployment features help minimize repetitive tasks and administrative burden associated with wide spread deployments.

          * All you could need to know on Juniper Networks NetScreen and SSG devices
          * Covers the materials found on the NetScreen NCSA exam
          * Provides clear configuration examples that help simplify an otherwise complex process

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-07-18

Book is easy to read and understand. Most books like this are so technical that they dont make any sense. Has some repitition to burn important things into your head. I wish more networking books were like this.

2 out of 5 stars Broad coverage - poor in the details.......2007-06-11

Definitively one of the worst technical publications I've ever bought.

This book will be useful only if you want to gain a general understanding on how netscreen firewalls work, but under no circumstance this should be considered a technical reference, or configuration guide.

HUGE lack of examples, and those present are extremely simplistic. Just driving through clicking on the NetscreenOS interface is not an example. The book is also plagued of grammatical inconsistencies.

After having read each one of its 743 pages I'm still on the same place I was before starting.

If you need a little more detail on what's behind the NetScreen & SSG architecture, use the Reference Guide from Juniper (more than 2,000 pages of rich examples, scenarios, and explanations... and the best... FREE!!!). That's exactly what I'm doing now.

To the publishers: thank you for making me post my first review ever.

          2 out of 5 stars A Golden Opportunity.......2007-03-28

Really good Juniper Networks security documentation is still lacking and the free info is typically better. There is still a golden opportunity for a technical author to write a really good book on best-practice design and implementation, to effectively leverage and integrate Juniper technology -- not just more reference material.

          5 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-03-10

Got this for a friend so that he could use it to learn and increase his knowledge of the products to further his career. He said its a very helpful book.

3 out of 5 stars Broad coverage, but limited by production nits.......2007-01-02

Juniper NetScreen firewalls have become a market leader for performance and features, and it's no wonder: they really are that good. As such, more people need to learn how to use them and configure them to do a wide range of activities. With this in mind, "Configuring Juniper Networks NetScreen & SSG Firewalls" attempts to fill that gap.

This book is similar to the well known and respected books from Cisco Press, and is basically a large scale product manual. As such, it's important to compare it both to the Cisco Press books in terms of production quality and clarity, and also to the docs that Juniper provides for free on their website. When you make this comparison, you find that "Configuring Juniper Networks NetScreen & SSG Firewalls" comes up short in both areas. That's not to say it isn't trying, but there are enough problems to make it just an average book.

Chapter 1 is the common basic firewall and Internet threat overview. Nothing too groundbreaking, and probably included for completeness. Chapter 2 is a nice overview of the Juniper Netscreen product line, and some of the basic concepts and technologies within them. Again, useful and probably included for completeness.

Chapter 3 covers "Deploying Juniper firewalls", focusing on basic options and introducing you to the web-based UI. Most of the material here is available in the online help or the free Juniper docs. Most of the instructions in this chapter are clear. Chapter 4 focuses on policy configuration and uses both the UI and the CLI to do so. Again, stuff that you can pick up with the free docs (granted the CLI help isn't as rich as docs, but the help is there nonetheless, especially for the UI), and again the presentation and examples are pretty clear.

Chapter 5 covers advanced policy configuration ideas, but focuses on bandwidth management. Some decent material here, but some of the CLI stuff gets a bit long and you can start to drown in it if you're not careful. Chapter 6 covers user authentication, and by this point the book (which, admittedly, is a reference book at heart) gets to be mind numbing. I started noticing some production errors here, usually in the typeface and presentation of the material. Some of the "settings" stuff gets to be a bit unclear to me at times, perhaps I need to study it more closely.

Chapter 7 covers routing (ie RIP, OSPF, BGP) and virtual routers. The size of this chapter and its examples is huge (100 pages), and if you're not careful you'll go blind. Again, this doesn't have much over the free Juniper docs, which are a bit better organized. Chapter 8 is a bit more managable (50 pages or so) and covers address translation (NAT, PAT, etc). at times it just becomes a series of examples, but the presentation is similar to the previous chapters. Not much over the free Juniper docs. Chapter 9 is another similar chapter and covers transparent mode. Decent presentation and examples, a few nits here and there that I find in this set of chapters.

Chapter 10 covers attack detection and defense, and I think the material is better organized than the more traditional networking materials. The examples are fewer and more focused.

Chapter 11 covers VPNs and was surprisingly short. The configuration stuff is either surprisingly simple and foolproof to set up or this chapter was very hit and run. The screenshots in this chapter are probably the weakest in the whole book, but in general they suffice. I'd probably say hit the Juniper docs, instead. Chapter 12, covering high availability (failover, redundancy, etc) is better, and has more examples and material. I think this is one of the better chapters balancing presentation and examples.

Chapter 13 covers troubleshooting, but I would have expected a bit more material. Perhaps if you pair it with the previous chapters on specific matters and features it would help. Chapter 14 ends the book with a tidy, concise and pretty clear unit on virtual systems (ie sub-interfaces).

Before you buy this book, you should look at the free documentation for ScreenOS and many Juniper products. I suspect that you'll find that their quality meets what you want, and they're clear and concise. That said, review this book (see if you can look inside and flip through it), seeing if it's worth the price for you. "Configuring Juniper Networks NetScreen & SSG Firewalls" attempts to be the authoritative source of information on NetScreen devices and does OK, but there are enough nits in the presentation and production to warrant any potential buyers to really compare it to the existing docs.

2 out of 5 stars not enough concept explanation, too much other minor detail.......2007-01-18

Important are not explained in depth enough. ex; attack objects, Deep inspection. It spends more time explain how to setup a certain thing than why this needs to be done or under what circumstance this need to be done.

I thought Juniper own documentation sometimes provide more useful concept than the book.

2 out of 5 stars Better off waiting for a Second Edition..........2006-06-05

I read a lot of books, and while I don't review all of them, I am often compelled to write a review when a book stands out, either for it's clear leadership and technical distinction in the marketplace, or for it's extreme lack thereof. In this case, I was compelled to write the review based on the latter.

Seeing as this is the only Netscreen book on the market, I had high expectations for it. When one looks at the credentials of the numerous authors, it reads like a veritable list of leaders in the Security industry. As such, I was rather excited when I picked up this book. As I began reading this book, I quickly realized that it was not going to meet my expectations. Clearly this book was rushed to market, another sign that the primary concern of many publishers is not in producing quality, but rather quantity. This book suffers from many of the same problems I see with other books on the market with multiple contributing authors, which is that the voice isn't consistent throughout the book. Some chapters have diagrams, screen shots, or CLI commands outlining various procedural steps, whereas these details are noticeably absent in others.

In addition, this book is littered with many errors throughout, both typographical as well as technical. In some cases, as other reviewers point out, sentences simply stop abruptly mid-sentence. The text often refers to diagrams which don't even exist. There are numerous references to find additional information in other chapters which are non-existent.

With regards to technical content, the authors certainly could have added more detail, especially considering the number of authors who contributed to this text. For example, the chapter on Routing does a good job of telling the reader how to enable BGP, but provides no details on how to actually configure a BGP neighbor. Another example is URL filtering which is discussed in the chapter on Attack Detection and Defense. While the authors do a good job of describing the various modes to support URL filtering (redirect vs. integrated), there is no explanation of how redirection actually takes place and no diagrams to provide for comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.

I can't blame the authors entirely for the many flaws in this book, as any decent technical editor should have been able to spot many of these errors prior to publication. One wonders whether the technical editors even read the book as many of the errors are so blatant that it's inconceivable that so many managed to slip through. I'm disappointed in Syngress for publishing a book with so many errors, and this has definitely led me to believe that Syngress does not want to maintain a leadership position of publishing technical content of the highest magnitude, but rather they are only concerned with being the first to market with a particular product.

I will give this book 2 stars in that it is indeed a noble attempt at covering a wide array of topics, as well as for being the only book in the industry which covers this subject matter. I suggest that the authors should examine the possibility of releasing a second edition which may fix these blatant errors, as well as hiring some decent technical editors.

5 out of 5 stars Fit for Purpose.......2006-05-19

If you wish to employ a Juniper/Netscreen Firewall out of the box tyhen this is the book to buy. Together with Junipers own documentation it will form a good basis for studying for certification. I can't quite understand what Mr Uphill Gardener found wrong with this book as it does do what it sets out to do and achieves its aims. His review seems as substantial as the rest of his reviews (?) check them out.

          5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-02-27

This book provides in-depth explanation of firewall fundamentals, principles, concepts and instruction. Comparable to a $3,000 instruction class. It speaks to the novice and advanced reader. Money well spent.

1 out of 5 stars Falls Short of the Mark..........2005-12-14

This book has several serious shortcomings. There are numerous spelling and grammatical errors, and sentences sometimes just end abruptly right in mid-sentence. The typography is uneven with run-together letters and spaces breaking words into pieces. The writing style is often choppy and hard to follow. In short, this book has the appearance of a first draft that has not had the benefit of editing. The editors were really asleep on the job to let this one slip through.

Aside from all of the issues mentioned above, the real problem with this book is that it doesn't have any examples. Sure, it has examples for each configuration command, but so does the vendor documentation, and this just appears to be a rehash of that information. What are completely missing are detailed examples describing how to configure a Netscreen firewall in a real-world environment. I would like to have seen comprehensive examples of configurations for remote office, small office, and enterprise environments that include setting up VPNs, DMZs, and other complex tasks.

Bottom line: this book is riddled with mistakes that should never have gotten past the editors and falls far short of the mark when it comes to providing real-world configuration examples. It's no better than a poorly done rehash of the vendor documentation available free on Juniper's website.
