Customer Reviews:
Not necessarily his best.......2007-05-03
I thought this would be a nice compendium of Buscema's best stuff all in one volume, but it's really just a fairly random collection of stories with his artwork. I don't know what criteria was used in choosing these stories over the much better work he has done-- it seems as though the material was chosen randomly. The only truly great work here is Silver Surfer vs. Thor, though Thing vs. Hulk is also good. Buscema looks best when inked by either himself, his brother Sal or Frank Giacoia. Where is the Sub-Mariner in this collection? Where are the great Avengers issues with the Vision vs. Ultron-5? Where is the truly stupendous work Buscema did in Thor vs. Mephisto? Instead we get ordinary, work-a-day issues inked by guys with no inspiration and little grasp of how to handle Big John's pencils. I can see reprinting a panel or two of "early work" to see how far he came with maturity, but to take up space with two whole stories from before his art was up to par is just using it as filler. Some stuff in here I've never seen before, and it barely looks like anything I would call classic Buscema. One awful- and long- section where somebody did 'colored pencils' over John's layouts- allegedly- is completely out of place here. I could have put together a far more historically significant book than this from memory. What was the editor thinking? I'd like to check out the other "Visionaries" books, but if this is an example, forget it.

Customer Reviews:
Visionary author, poor packaging.......2007-07-19
Marvel's line of hardcover Marvel Visionaries books seem like a good idea, but there are a few that while they display the highlighted author's talents, they are poorly assembled. This hardcover TPB, which focuses on legendary X-Men scribe Chris Claremont, is sadly misassembled thanks to only featuring single issues of his various runs on different series' instead of full storyarcs, which really doesn't display Claremont's talent as a whole to begin with. The issues we get here aren't bad though: the penultimate issue of his legendary Dark Phoenix Saga from Uncanny X-Men, an issue from his Wolverine mini-series (featuring art from Frank Miller), as well as various issues from his runs on Excalibur, New Mutants, Iron Fist, and Daredevil. While what you get here isn't bad, if you start to dig the story you're reading and want to see how it ends, prepare to lay down more cash to pick up the whole thing in TPB form. There's nothing bad here at all, and Claremont is more than worthy of being labeled a visionary, but this poorly assembled TPB fails to display just how great and influential a writer Claremont was way back when.
Book Description
The acclaimed national bestseller-a no-holds-barred account of what you can really expect when you're expecting
Oh, the joys of pregnancy! There's the gassiness, constipation, queasiness, and exhaustion, the forgetfulness, crankiness, and the constant worry. Of course, no woman is spared the discomforts and humiliations of pregnancy, but most are too polite to complain or too embarrassed to talk about them. Not Jenny McCarthy!
In the New York Times best-selling Belly Laughs, actress and new mother Jenny McCarthy reveals the naked truth about the tremendous joys, the excruciating pains, and the unseemly disfigurement that go along with pregnancy. Never shy, frequently crude, and always laugh-out-loud funny, McCarthy covers it all in the grittiest of girlfriend detail. From morning sickness and hormonal rage, to hemorrhoids, pregnant sex, and the torture and sweet relief that is delivery, Belly Laughs is must-read comic relief for anyone who is pregnant, who has ever been pregnant, is trying to get pregnant, or indeed, has ever been born!
Customer Reviews:
A nice change of pace..........2007-09-12
I bought this book seeking something other than the typical "What to expect when you're expecting", and that's exactly what I got. I am a sarcastic, slightly cynical person... this book was perfect for me. Jenny McCarthy is straight to the point, and shockingly honest. The book is sincere, but with the comedy edge that makes it less cheesy than most pregnancy books.
Great read for every pregnant woman.......2007-09-10
The book is very honest and very funny. Jenny does a great job at sharing all her embarassing pregnancy stories and reasures us that what we are expieriencing is in fact normal!
more comical than informative........2007-09-07
This book is easy reading however, its not as informative as I'd hoped. I am pregnant for the first time (writing under my husbands name!), and was looking for something funny AND informative. The best book for this topic I've found is "The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy" by Vicky Iovine. She is hilarious, and VERY informative and covers every topic. This book basically tells stories of Jenny's pregnancy - which is great - but only one persons story.
Waste of time and money.......2007-09-06
This book was a complete waste of time (the whole hour it took to read it) and money. I found many other books much more informative, upfront and honest.
COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN.......2007-09-02
I LITERALLY COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN UNTIL I WAS FINISHED WITH IT. I LOVE HOW TRUTHFUL SHE WAS IN IT. I AM GLAD SHE WROTE THIS BOOK! I JUST LET ONE OF MY FRIENDS WHO IS ALSO EXPECTING THE BOOK. I HAD TOLD HER ABOUT IT AND SHE WAS WAITING UNTIL I WAS DONE. I WILL BE PURCHASING MORE BOOKS BY HER :o)

Ok book.......2000-04-17
This book was ok. It was cute at times but not really funny. Some of the stories would make you smile but not really laugh. You will probably get better stories from the girls in the typing pool at work.
Mirthful Moments of Motherhood scores again!.......1999-10-27
I loved Belly Laughs 2 just as much as the first book. It was easy to relate to and laugh about the hysterical misadventures of becoming a parent. It makes a great gift for anyone who is going to, has had or has ever been a baby. I had to give each of our four grown-up kids a copy and am encouraging them to submit the stories of our grandkids arrivals to the Stork Search of 99 Contest -- a real bonus to reading the book and recalling those hectic days and nervous nights. This book helps put it all in the right perspective. You are not alone!

Customer Reviews:
I didn't put this book down until I had finished it!.......1999-02-17
Belly Laughs and Babies is simply delightful! It brought tears and laughter and evoked a great many memories about my own experiences with pregnancy, childbirth, and baby days. It was very easy to read and I finished it in one sitting, eager to read more and to share my own stories. Any mother/father, young or old will recognize themselves in some of the stories or recall thier own as they delight in this collection. A fun read!!
Throughly enjoyed the variety of funny anecdotes.......1999-02-03
I loved Belly Laughs and high recommed it to anyone who has ever experienced the fun and foibles of parenthood. It makes a great gift for a new parent, especially if given after they have experieced those sleepness nights and need a few laughs. The variety of chuckles, heartfelt smiles and OhmyGod-how-awful anecdotes are sure to lighten a harried heart.
Not what expected.......1999-01-20
I would give this book 1/2 of a star or a 1/4 of a single star... One customer's review said she "laughed till her sides hurt" which is why I bought the book. I for one did NOT laugh at the book, it really wasn't even funny. The stories are VERY dry and dated. I am 40 pages into the book and its awful. I can't believe the copy write is 1997 because the stories all seem to come from the 1930's and 50's. What was the author thinking? Couldn't she find some 80's or 90's women to share their child birthing stories? I couldn't at all relate to the women in the book. Very disapointing read, save your money on this one and put it towards your baby's nursery room. If your interested in a better book I highly recommend, "From Here to Maternity" by Allan Zullo with John McGran, very funny outrageous but true pregnancy stories.
Great Humor for the Frazzled Expecting or New Parents.......1997-11-18
Mary Sheridan has put together a collection of truly humorous stories from parents in the pregnancy and newborn stages of making a family. You will see your husband, your child, or yourself in at least one of these stories (at least I did). You will really laugh at the more outrageous things some people have done and you will have a smile on your face several times as you think to yourself, been there, done that! If you know anyone who has those frazzled days of pregnancy when she just wants the baby to arrive so she can get a decent nights sleep again or someone who worries too much about the childbirthing compentency of the man she chose to share parenting with, this is just the book to lighten the load, bring a smile to her face, and renew her faith in the father to be. Surely he wouldn't do that (and if he does anything that outrageous, just send the story to Mary for the next edition!).

Politics and Entertainment.......2005-02-16
Entertaining The Citizen: When Politics and Popular Culture Converge by Liesbet Van Zoonen (Critical Media Studies: Rowman & Littlefield) (Paperback) One day, while researching for this book, I came across an excited text from an American student who had to watch The West Wing, an American television series about life and politics at the White House, for her political science class. Did I envy her! I remember reading All the President's Men and watching the movie in the Netherlands in the mid-seventies, when I was in my teens. I found it electrifying; what an amaz¬ing arrogance of the Nixon administration, what a daring investigation by the Washington Post journalists, what a right and proper outcome of the democratic process. How exhilarating politics could be! I don't re-ally remember whether the book and the movie made me go to univer¬sity to study political science, but I do recall my surprise and frustration in my first year that politics could be made so tiresome. We did not get movies at my Dutch university, but there were lots of readings, endless theorizing, enigmatic statistical logics, and discussion-always more discussion. On only a few occasions did a teacher manage to convey some of the passion and vitality that motivates people to become involved in politics or to study political science. More often I found my-self struggling with the abstract concepts of "the state," "ideology," and "the public sphere." I found out only later that my bewilderment as an eighteen-year-old (Where is this public sphere exactly?) was a running gag among scholars working with the concept. Had they told me then, I may not have ended up with such a love-hate relationship with politics and political science; much of which also had to do, as I understood again much later, with being one of the few women to study this pecu¬liar discipline.
After my first disappointing year, I turned away and focused on re-search methodology and media studies. These proved to be much more concrete and fun; apparently I was not cut out for the intense and solemn business of politics and political science. Some two decades later I have managed to shrug off my inevitable sense of failure and turn the issue around. I started to wonder if there was a deficiency in politics and polit¬ical science itself. Perhaps my difficulties with the discipline were not the result of my frivolity but a consequence of how politics and the belonging discipline framed itself. It seemed likely that I was not the only one who was terribly bored; after all, political interest and student numbers seemed to be declining, at least in the late nineties in the Netherlands.
Obviously, age, experience, and position enabled me to ask the ques¬tions that I thought were trivial when I was eighteen. This book is the re¬sult. It is meant as an agenda to think about entertaining politics, instead of simply discarding it as irrelevant and dangerous to citizenship and the democratic project. It is meant as a starting point for debate, and it is meant to stimulate and entertain students and all others reading it.
Excerpt: Can politics be combined with entertainment? Can political involvement and participation be fun? Can citizenship be pleasurable? These and similar questions have forced themselves upon us again and again in the past years: they were, for instance, raised by Arnold Schwarzeneg¬ger's election as governor of California. They were implicit in the meet¬ings between U2 lead singer Bono and world leaders, which concerned Third World debts. They were behind the outcry that greeted the pro¬posal, by American cable network FX, to run a televised political popu¬larity contest in the vein of American Idol, with the purpose of selecting presidential candidates. They were inherent in the acclaim for the award-winning television series The West Wing, a fictional portrayal of day-to-day political processes in the White House. They were heightened in the dispute about the portrayal of Ronald and Nancy Reagan in the 2003 tel¬evision series The Reagans, which made CBS decide not to air the show on network television.

Customer Reviews:
Good overall review of metrics and methods. .......2007-02-14
A very thorough treatment of Software Engineering metrics. Good graphics. Good explanations. Much better than other books in this area.
Great book!.......2006-04-11
This book is a must have for all the managers and profesionals that need a complete and detailed reference for software metrics. It provides clear explanations and examples. It is very easy to read and very practical.
Real World Proven.......2005-08-18
As the System Test Team Leader for the Quality Technology area, I had to certify many of the tools and procedures used by Stephen Kan. Prior to that, as a System Administrator, I had to run software metrics on those tools, like those shown in table 6.3. As a design review moderator, I was charged with leading a number of IR, IE and I0 reviews.
THIS STUFF WORKS!
I can attest personally to the great effort and many find minds that worked together to develop and implement fine tools such as DCR, PTR, PTF and APAR, as well as the brilliantly simple, effective ways of implementing Continuous Quality Improvement techniques such as DPP. What Kan has written is real-world honest and true, not some academic exercise.
Kan is dead-right on the money. If you want to track, predict and manage things in the real world, this is how you do it. At PSQT '97, Tom Gilb told me that SEI should create a new CMM "Level Six" designation for the way Kan and the others at IBM Rochester have dealt with software quality. That's how good the stuff in this book is.
I am particularly impressed by how Kan has woven in not only his work and IBM Rochester as a whole, but also the work of others throughout the industry in such a simple, clear, easy to understand manner.
Yet, given that the book is an easy read, that many of the techniques are easy to do, and that I see this book on the shelves of many IT managers, it baffles me why so few people and so few companies actually implement this stuff. I suspect that politics and corporate culture is what's holding back so many companies from enjoying the success, efficiency, and frankly the FUN of working in a continually measuring, continually refining work environment such as Kan describes.
For example, Defect Removal Effectiveness is a very simple metric to gather. In a typical medium sized software company, or in the I.T. department of a large company, the head of testing and the head of phone support could easily enough get together and compare the number of bugs found in testing the last release with the number of bugs found in the field after that release was deployed. Both areas already have their problem logs, and if they can't directly pull counts and totals, it's typically only a few minutes work for the right programmer. So what's the hold up? It's not that the metric is hard to understand, or an academic exercise, or that the numbers are hard to get. It's that people have a hard time admitting that "their baby is ugly". The good of the company, stopping bugs from getting to the field, conflicts with the good of the testing manager, who doesn't want to risk admitting that problems got past them.
Therefore, I think it would be a fine addition to this book if Kan could write another chapter which deals with the human side of the equation. The book thus far presumes an interest in software metrics and appropriate management support from the top levels down. What would move this book from worker's bookshelves to their desks, and keep this book open and used on a daily basis, would be some ideas on how to garner and build support for implementing software metrics and TQM practices across an organization. People want to do this; that's why this book gets sold. Unfortunately, people aren't empowered to do so, which is why many times this excellent book sits on a shelf.
Paul Walchak
Second Ed. even better!.......2004-07-09
This is one of the most highly regarded books on software quality. If you have never read the first edition it was one of the few books that covered software quality in depth, going well beyond metrics and models into strategies for achieving quality, and understanding the underlying principles and mechanics. That edition had a lot of life left in it, but this second edition is one of the most complete rewrites of any technical book I've read in recent memory, and if you own the first edition you may want to consider retiring it and investing in this edition.
While the first edition packed a lot of information in 344 pages, the 560 pages that comprise this edition reflect new chapters and expanded content in the chapters that remain. Here is a list of the new chapters:
- Chapter 10, In-Process Metrics for Software Testing
- Chapter 12, Metrics and Lessons Learned for Object-Oriented Projects (in lieu of the old Chapter 12 titled AS/400 Quality Management)
- Chapter 13, Availability Metrics
- Chapter 15, Conducting In-Process Quality Assessments
- Chapter 16, Conducting Software Project Assessments (the project assessment questionnaire example in the appendix is a valuable companion to this chapter)
- Chapter 17, Dos and Don'ts of Software Process Improvement (contributed by Patrick O'Toole)
- Chapter 18, Using Function Point Metrics to Measure Software Process Improvement (Contributed by Capers Jones)
Among the new chapters I most like are Availability Metrics (Chapter 13), because of the direct tie to production, and Dos and Don'ts of Software Process Improvement (Chapter 17) because of the practical and objective advice. This book will remain, in my opinion, one of the definitive texts on software quality and is one I highly recommend.
Review.......2003-07-02
Solid information which not covers the basic development lifecycle and it's components but also the bigger picture e.g. predictive analyses, reflective metrics, customer satisfaction measurement, etc. A good read, informative and it won't scare a novice. Recommended.
