Customer Reviews:
The most hilarious series I have read in a while..........2006-11-21
I bought this book under the recommendation of a friend of mine and was a little hesitant because it was a Korean Manhwa, not a Japanese manga, of which I was more familiar with. I love it! I was laughing out loud at every page. It is hilarious, sweet and the art is great. I highly recommend it for anyone who likes their shojo with comedy. I guarantee that you'll love it too.
Book Description
Those super-powered teenaged stars of the Cartoon Network are back in a third volume of adventures! Dont let its small size fool youthis book is packed with bigger-than-life adventures for Robin, Beast Boy, Raven, Cyborg and Starfire and features the stories Countdown, Magic Misdirection, What Time Is It, Mr. Wolf?, If You Cant Beat Em.... and Pop Quiz.
Customer Reviews:
Simple and fun.......2006-09-23
Teen Titans Go! is the comic book tie-in to the Cartoon Network TV show (rather than the original monthly Teen Titans comic). The book has the same target audience as the show, and is appropriate for all ages.
It helps if you've already watched the cartoon, because not much of the history of the characters are explained. In addition to our main characters of Robin, Cyborg, Beast Boy, Raven and Starfire, we have appearances by Terra, Speedy, Slade, Plasmus, Mumbo the magician, and Kitten (Killer Moth's daughter) as well as one or two new faces.
The artwork is solid, illustrated in a style similar to the cartoon. The stories are almost all action, not much by way of character development (this is a tie-in, so the TV show is where you'd go for character development).
This collects five issues of the monthly comic. The presentation is a little weak because they don't break up the individual issues in any way, so unless you catch the little "the end" icon at the bottom of the page, you suddenly find yourself in the middle of a new fight.
Oh, and there's knock-knock jokes! Enjoy!

Duckie doesn't float upright.......2007-08-19
Even though the book talks about the research that went into making a rubber duck that floats upright, this one doesn't. I have to really work at it to get to float correctly as most of the time it just falls on to it's side.
I'm not happy with it.
Great gift for anyone.......2004-07-10
I have been a rubber duck fan since I was a kid, and this little book - that comes complete with its own collector duck, just touched my heart. I have a new grandson and I am starting him out right in the best of bath traditions!
Collecting rubber ducks has taken on quite a cashe way beyond the original child's toy, and Jodie Davis's book gives a through duckumentary on all stages of the charming little fellow through the ages. Loved it! Sue Ann Taylor

Book Description
François Truffaut called The Innocents “the best English film after Hitchcock Goes to America. ” Tennessee Williams said The Great Gatsby was “a film whose artistry even surpassed the original novel.” The maker of both films was Jack Clayton, one of the greatest English directors of the post-war era, best remembered for the trail-blazing Room at the Top. This is the first full-length critical study of Clayton's work. Neil Sinyard draws on the director's private papers for a fresh analysis of the individual films. The book contains new material on Clayton's many unrealized projects and includes his previously unpublished short story The Enchantment --as poignant and revealing as the films themselves.

Book Description
Spearheaded by Harvey Washington Wiley, the Pure Food and Drugs Act of 1906 launched the federal regulation of food and drugs in the United States. Wiley is often lauded as a champion of public interest for bringing about a law that required healthful ingredients and honest labeling. Clayton Coppin and Jack High demonstrate, however, that Wiley was in fact surreptitiously allied with business firms that would benefit from regulation and moreover, that the law would help him build his government agency, the Federal Bureau of Chemistry.
Coppin and High discuss such issues as Wiley's efforts to assign the law's enforcement to his own bureau. They go on to expose the selectivity of Wiley's enforcement of the law, in which he manipulated commercial competition in order to reward firms that supported him and penalize those that opposed him. By examining the history of the law's movement, the authors show that, rather than acting in the public interest, Wiley used the Pure Food and Drugs Act to further his own power and success. Finally, they analyze government regulation itself as the outcome of two distinct competitive processes, one that takes place in the market, the other in the polity.
The book will interest scholars concerned with government regulation, including those in economics, political science, history, and business.
Clayton Coppin is a management consultant and historian, Koch Industries, Wichita. Jack High is Professor of Economics, George Mason University.

Better understand "Food Wars" between the USA and Europe.......1999-06-25
This engaging and colorful account of the history of U.S. food regulation provides excellent perspective for better understanding the recent spate of high-profile, food regulation trade disputes between the U.S.and Europe, and within Europe, such as the "Banana Wars", "British Beef", and "Genetically modified corn" incidents. A must-read for anyone who who has interest in the unique nature and psychology of government actions in dealing with issues around "our daily bread". This book appears to have been subjected to a very rigorous "peer review" and I expect it will become a classic reference work.
a positive review of an excellent book.......1999-05-22
a brillant, insightful exposition of a fascinating subject -- a must read for historians and all persons interested in government regulation.

"Heroin Heroes".......2004-11-20
When one thinks of drugs, particularly, illicit drugs, it is usual to think of them in terms of black or white. In other words, drugs are either good or bad, legal or illegal, healthy or unhealthy, &c. Concerning illicit drugs, the customary portrayal is that it has a diabolical dimension, as if the drug itself was actually sentient and its intentions were nothing but malicious. Contrarily, that same drug which at one point was contextually portrayed as evil can as easily be portrayed as a redeemer, a healer - again, almost as if it were a sentient thing - this time possessing good intentions. Is it, however, reasonable to bestow on drugs human attributes? Of course, no one would really ever admit that it, in fact, is reasonable (unless you're in Harry Potter-land), yet - Heroin has that exact kind of human status - in this case, it is wholly evil. And, by association, those who use Heroin are by default branded evil; these distinctions can lead to interesting conclusions, such as: Heroin is evil; you use Heroin; therefore you are evil. In this case, the attributes of the user are based on his or her use of the drug, and not the natural disposition of the user. Of course, logically considered, this assertion goes against all sense, yet this is how the propaganda against Heroin and its users or "fiends" have been articulated in the political arena as well as in the media. The author, Th. Metzger, considers this odd twist of unjust identification by analyzing the origins of opiate use in America and how it went from having an exalted status to that of the demonic, something bereft of any medical utility. Heroin, is, in and of itself, not only useless - but and especially morbid. A perfect and modern example of this, not mentioned in the book, can be easily seen in the hysteria over the BRAND of opiate, Oxycotin. Other than who manufactures the pill and how it is designed to work as well as its potency - there is simply no difference between it and other opiates, hydrocodones included.
Like Richard Lawrence Miller's excellent thesis of what societal role drug users play in American life in his book, "Drug Warriors and Their Prey," Metzger's book is an excellent survey of the more irrational side of the virulent American obsession with drugs, which has manifested itself in what is commonly referred to as the "drug war." In his book, Metzger mainly sticks to the topic of Heroin and the Heroin user and therefore other drugs are rarely mentioned.
This book is an excellent source for those not only interested in the role of drugs and drug users in society but why it is an issue in the first place - in fact, this book can provide many interesting directions for further study.
Metzger is an academic, but his writing is devoid of all the usual abstruse language and verboseness that attends typical scholarly writing. This work is well documented - however, I do wish that there were an index included in this work! Otherwise, Highly recommended.
Enlightening.......2002-11-04
Great book. I learned a tremendous amount from Metzger's details. I was shocked to find out the truth behind what company was the first to deal heroin (so to speak) and the real people and dates of addiction, eugenics, and the demographics of the heroin addict at different times. It's full of information that "I always wanted to know" but would never have found out if it weren't for this book.
Useful Research.......2000-03-07
Having recently written my Masters Thesis on Heroin in Contemporary Film, I found Metzger's book informative and interesting. Metzger focuses largely on the link between the eugenics 'cult of purity' of the early 20th century and the emergent anti-drug attitudes of 'mainstream' culture. At times Metzger may veer towards the hysterical himself, but his analysis of the beginnings of the criminalisation of heroin goes some way towards understanding the cultural formation of illict drugs and is a must for anyone wishing to explore the construction of the heroin addict. The book redresses the imbalance of 'legitimate' narratives, which simply take a moral stance on drug issues without a historical perspective. It's also an enjoyable read.
Customer Reviews:
Well handled.......2005-10-31
Grand Master Raymond Keene handles his subject with fluency and eloquence, as can only be expected of the chess correspondent for The Times and The Spectator. His annotations, as in most of his books, are excellent, and the examples he uses to illustrate his points are always apt, and adroitly used. As part of the series on the World Chess Championships, this book is a necessity for any collector, but more than this, Keene puts emphasis on a player frequently under-represented in the world of chess literature - Wilhelm Steinitz, bohemian, champion and in many ways the father of the world chess champions. Some of the matches here are perhaps not as interesting as others, and may not compare well with those in a few of the other books in the series, but they are handled well, and this more than makes up for the occasional dragging game.
A Great WCC Book --But not the best games.......2004-11-23
This is a superb example GM Keene's writing brilliance. The analyses are prosy, and don't contain too many moves from random games. Instead, he includes moves from games that feature similar themes or that demonstrate the folly of the text move. I highly recommend this book if you want to collect WCC books or just liked the match.
However, if you are looking for a book of great games--don't go here. As a book this is 5 stars. The annotations are masterful, and so his Keene's style. However, as a match, it probably deserves only 2 or 3. Games 1, 13, and 14 are (IMHO) the only good ones. Many were short draws, and in games 5 and 8 Kramnik's huge preparatory blunders hurt the match. Therefore, I recommend Zurich 1953 by David Bronstein if you want great games.
A superb book with masterful annotations.......2004-11-23
This is a superb world championship book. GM Keene has published an incredible number of books and is one of the best chess authors in the world. We uses a great deal of prose to keep the reader interested. In addition, he has notes from other players. I highly recommend this book if you want to look at a piece of history.

Disappointing Read.......2006-04-22
This book lacks credibility. It gives a weak high level outline for crypto and has some very embarrassing inaccuracies when detail is attempted to be covered. It's also shockingly dated in places and very poorly written with disorganized statements. Save your money and visit some websites that would give you better general and specialized information and not cost you a bean. This book is not value for money.
Disappointing.......2005-12-05
Not a good book in many ways. Lots of slapdash comment, quite a few innacuracies and badly edited. Seems like it was rushed out to fill a gap in the market. I've worked in banks for years, and followed cyrypto development and written crypto policy, we bought this book to introduce the subject to some of our new guys, and we quickly fell out of favor with the content.
Save your dollars and buy something a little bit more credible!
Pretty Good Intro to Cryptography.......2005-09-30
I've stumbled across cryptography for about the past year, so recently I decided to go ahead and learn some basics (as I think the subject and InfoSec is really interesting). Most cryptography books out there are for the advanced and are mathematically rigorous. While I gladly welcome math, I needed an overview to bring me up to speed, prepping me for more intermediate (and eventually advanced) texts later.
I've never read a Dummies book dealing with computer technology before, because although they're written for absolute novices, the low-level writing style irritates me, usually takes too long to get to the "interesting stuff", and the "yippity-skippity!" attitude will eventually make me go seek a more advanced text. Basically, Dummies books "hold your hand", and if this is what you need, they're great! But if not, they can be rather slow for you (as for me).
However, Cryptography for Dummies is pretty good, aside from a few misses. By this being a Dummies book, the impression of this text being for complete neophytes is false - if you don't have any experience with basic computer science topics (e.g. binary, binary-to-decimal conversions, bits/bytes/words, etc.), the first couple chapters may be a little hard to understand, as the author assumes you at least know that stuff.
Aside from that, the author does a good job explaining the basic topics one needs to understand cryptography and its inner-workings. However, the author's writing style leaves much to be desired at times. At points, I found myself scratching my head, re-reading passages several times, trying to figure out what the author meant. At times when he should explain the nuances of something, he doesn't, leaving you to go, "HUH?" (A good example of this are the early parts where he talks about keys but doesn't explain what a key is or how they interact with other parts of a cryptographic system.)
There are other sections where the author leaves entire descriptions of things out, where you'll have to figure it out for yourself. Perhaps this is purposeful, so he won't get too far into the topic, as this book is basically an overview. Something else I noticed too is the vast amount of errors the book has! I'm not sure if Dummies has an 'Errata' section on its site.
While this book is by no means a complete text (probably not even a 1/3-complete text), overall, it's good for those who want an overview of the subject, and plan on venturing further, as I do.
Great intro into Cryptography.......2004-12-01
This book was excellent for getting you over that hill of understanding. If you don't have much back ground in cryptography or don't need to know the nitty-gritty details of how it all works then this is the book for you. The book is well indexed and fairly up to date. The only problem I found with this book is that sometimes it went back over some things already covered but, this is a minor issue. I used it extensively for doing an intro research paper on cryptography.
Good intro to cryptography.......2004-10-03
Cryptography is one of the most intimidating aspects of computer security, conjuring up, as it does, such concepts as hash functions and public-key infrastructures. For the average user who wants to know about cryptography without gaining the proficiency of a cryptographer, Cryptography for Dummies is the perfect introduction.
The book details the core elements of cryptography that the average user needs to understand, leaving the theoretical topics to more long-winded texts. Emphasis is put on simplicity and straightforwardness, with as little gibberish as possible. Screen shots and illustrations are used effectively without being condescending or insulting.
As the book progresses, the chapters plumb more detail. Those wishing just a quick introduction should stop after part one. For the more ambitious, sections on public-key infrastructures, secured sockets layer, authentication systems, and virtual private networks lie ahead.
