Book Description
Highly successful in the mini-comic series format, Bumperboy's first adventure is now available in one complete book. Bumperboy Loses His Marbles is an all-ages story following Bumperboy - with his best pal, Bumperpup - on his frantic trek to find his missing marbles before the big Marble Tournament. Does Bumperboy have what it takes to win all the marbles?
Customer Reviews:
Simply wonderful!.......2005-12-07
Bumperboy Loses His Marbles is a great little book by a wonderful author/illustrator. Ms. Huey knows how to tell a story and her talent is obvious with charming characters in a wonderfully-drawn adventure. I read this book while sitting for an 8 yr old boy and he didn't want me to put it down. I can't wait to read the next installment!
I love Bumperboy as much as he loves his marbles!.......2005-08-27
This is truly an adorable and funny comic, and I'm very glad I ordered it. At first the drawings, storyline and dialouge may seem overly simplistic, but once you start reading the book will pull you in and you'll care about these little guys as much as any other beloved fictional characters.
Bumperboy of Bubtopia is ready to compete in the big marble championship, but all his marbles are gone! They're scattered throughout the land and he- and his faithful dog Bumperpup- must visit some really neat places to find them all. But his most important marble (given to him by his grandmother) was stolen and is in the possession of his arch-enemy, who plans to use it in the championship! Will Bumperboy be able to beat him without his lucky marble and get it back?
I'm in my twenties and I loved this book, but it's really perfect for very young readers. The book is very cute, but it's written sincerely with respect to the readers instead of a fake sugary-sweet way, which makes it appealing for all ages. The only drawback to this book is that it just flew by when I read it, and now I'm jonesing for more Bumperboy tales!
From the official Bumperboy site I also bought the "First Day of School" book, which was also superb and featured the other characters in Bumperboy's world. The author was even nice enough to include an autographed postcard as well! I hope lots more stories in this comic will come out soon from this wonderful writer- I'll be there to happily buy every single one.
I CAN'T IMAGINE THE WORLD WITHOUT BUMPERBOY!.......2005-07-22
I love BUMPERBOY LOSES HIS MARBLES!
That's it. No fancy shenanigans, no clever wordplay. I just love it. Besides, the book is full of fancy shenanigans and it has clever written all over it, so Debbie Huey has it more than covered. I mean, how can you not love a comic that has Onomatopeople with names like Bam or Pow? It's a credit to Huey's self-assurance that she has made a book for kids that gives kids the benefit of the doubt that they will even know what that means. It's a rare thing these days to find entertainment that actually remembers children can be clever, too.
Plus, there are dancing bananas.
Huey has self-published this collection of her minicomics using a Xeric Grant, and AdHouse Books are distributing it, so it's the most indie of indie comics. And yet, Huey manages to avoid all the hipster pitfalls that most indie comic book creators trip over when making books for kids. Too often such comics rely on an ironic pose to get them through, as if one jaded adult can only create such nonsense if other jaded adults can see him winking. BUMPERBOY LOSES HIS MARBLES! is played with a straight face, hearkening back to a time when we could all have fun without having to make excuses for it. Bumperboy's adventure is one every kid would want to have, and any adult worth knowing secretly wants to have it, too. It's a simple story: as Bumperboy and his faithful canine Bumperpup head off to practice their marble playing before the big tournament, their arch rival tricks them into dropping the entire bag of marbles through a Borp Hole, an interdimensional portal. The only way to get them back is to go into the hole themselves and search the strange worlds for the lost toys. With the deadline of the competition hanging over their heads, it's a bit of a challenge.
The line work in BUMPERBOY LOSES HIS MARBLES! is clean and charming, and Huey approaches each page with an eye that manages to be inventive while maintaining clarity. Her layouts aren't just simple grids, they move with the events of the story. The journeys through the Borp Hole become a constantly growing riff, and Huey creates wonderful montages to get us through the marbles tournament without cheating us on the action.
BUMPERBOY LOSES HIS MARBLES! is a graphic novel for anyone who wants to recapture the joy and remember what it was like to play a fun game--or read a good story--on a summer day. It's cliche to say it's for the kid who lives inside of all of us, but it really is. It's also perfect for those of us who are older comic book fans to share with a new generation of readers. I know my nephews can expect to get one in their Christmas stockings this year.
Buy it, read it, love it........2005-07-21
Simple character designs and minimal detail give Bumperboy the visual appeal of a newspaper comic strip, and Debbie Huey's effortless humor and casual pacing are evocative of the best Nickelodeon cartoons. Bumperboy and his dog, Bumperpup, wear some sort of full-body suit that makes them look like astronauts, and live in a world inhabited by, among other characters, a sock-wearing bear, a pair of bananas, and a malicious bird, Frederick, who'll stop at nothing to win the big marble tournament. It's Frederick who causes Bumperboy to lose his marbles in a "borp hole" hours before the tournament begins. Borp holes are teleportals that randomly send Bumperboy to places throughout Bubtopia as he tries to find his marbles, particularly his shooter, a legend in his family, given to him by his grandmother who won several tournaments with it.
I've never played marbles in my life, never had the slightest bit of interest, and yet Huey makes the 56th Annual Marble Tournament as compelling as last year's Yankees/Red Sox playoff series, including a bit of a similarly unexpected twist in the results at one point. That she doesn't take the most obvious route to get to the ending is both appealing and her least notable achievement here.
I repeat: SHE MAKES A MARBLE TOURNAMENT COMPELLING! IN A COMIC BOOK!
Bumperboy Loses His Marbles has jumped into my Top 10 list for 2005 and I recommend it to everyone without qualification. Buy it, read it, love it. It'll make you a better person.

This collection of essays from the late, lamented Might magazine deserves a place on any post-boomer's bookshelf. Shiny Adidas Tracksuits bristles with interesting thoughts and novel turns of phrase; most pieces are short (fewer than five pages), and all are well written and precisely observed.
Referring to Might's editorial principles, the editors write: "One rule was that every issue of Might had to have a lot of swearing in it, ideally in the headlines. Another rule was that, even though we had about a month or two to put each issue together, the magazine had to go to press with somewhere between thirty and forty egregious spelling and grammatical errors. But the one rule that really got us into trouble, the one that basically doomed us from the start, was this one: We would not publish anything we didn't care about.... In observing this rule, the one that said we had to like the things we printed, we were precluded from publishing the sorts of things that might have kept the magazine afloat: namely articles about celebrities, clothes, electronics, makeup, cars, video games, beer, nightlife generally, and beer." Instead, the writers in Shiny Adidas Tracksuits and the Death of Camp describe quirky personal quests, examine pop-culture doodads, and spout crackpot theories. The book, like the magazine, somehow avoids the creeping contagion of irony and remains absolutely fresh, vigorous, and friendly.
Apart from David Foster Wallace, most contributors aren't national commodities (which is sort of the point), but they deserve to be, and deserve your attention. This book is a fitting epitaph to a sparkler of a magazine. --Michael Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Funny Funny Funny.......2004-08-31
In A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, Dave Eggars talks a bit about the short-lived magazine he and a group of friends founded. This is a collection of the best articles from that magazine. Very intelligent, sarcastic, and funny if not always important, they cover such topics as the annual meeting of Phil Campbell's from around the world in Phil Campbell, Alabama (written by Phillip G. Campbell), why black people are cooler than white people, how the world's conflicts can be solved through simple design principles, and "The Thing About Men and Nail Polish." A good friend bought me this book, which was very nice because it was one of those rare gifts for no reason that make you feel especially good. Now I will lend it back to him because he should read it too.
Wait for the real one.......2000-03-23
I recently saw the former editor of Might reading from his book and he mentioned that his new magazine, McSweeney's, would be publishing books, and that one of them would be a 'much, much better' version of this book. He was complaining about how this Shiny book was cheap-looking and that the publisher had screwed up the cover, etc, so McSweeney's would put a new collection together, in a hardcover I think, and it'd be out sometime in the next six months or so. I saw this Shiny book in a store and it did look kind of cheap. Why do they print books with that newsprint type paper? Anyway, I think I'll wait for the real version.
something to remember Might by.......2000-02-19
I cried the day I got my last issue of Might Magazine. Not because I had just bought a subcription and was out 19 bucks, but because I felt like I was loosing a friend. Might was smart, funny, and lovable. Buy this book and experience some of the Might genius.
eclectic, interesting mix.......1999-12-18
I originally bought this book through Amazon.com because I first learned about it as having an article written by Mark Dougherty, the vocalist for a music group called Soul Coughing. I was intrigued because, in addition to being briliant, wacky musicians, the lyrics to much of their work are some of the funniest, catchiest, nonsensical clips of genius that I have ever heard.
Naturally, I had to read-on.
What I found was something that I didn't even know existed: a semi-underground, irreverent and now extinct publication called 'Might Magazine'. Although I was never exposed to it firsthand, I can see how many might have considered this publication to have a lot of potential, if uneven and frustrating at times.
There is such a thing as too much tongue-in-cheek, and the collective smirk on the faces of all the contributors included in this book could create enough energy to power the sun for a year. This wouldn't be so bad if, after reading all that, one weren't left with the feeling that half these guys are making the smug and annoying assumption that they are smarter than you.
Still, this collection has a lot of things going for it, including some truly quirky and original humor. Three of my favorites are: 'Are Black People Really Cooler Than White People?', the story on Adam Rich's death, and the essay attacking outdoor extreme sports as a trendy fetish. Many others, like the essay on the ubiquity of the American caesar salad, seem truly trivial in a weak attempt at quirky, camp humor. In fact, many of these essays make you wonder, 'Why would anyone ever want to write on this subject?', and on more than one occasion, I sometimes wished that they would stop.
Despite this, the celebration of camp culture is a topic that is very worthy of publication. This book comes as a recommendation largely for that reason alone.
Two Words: Adam Rich.......1999-12-17
I purchased this book for one reason and one reason only... Might's post-mortem tribute to "Eight is Enough" star, Adam Rich. Of course, it was just a parody of such tributes and Adam was in on it, but it started one of the better celebrity death rumors to run rampant on the internet.
The other articles range from bitingly funny, to mildly amusing, to the kind of pseudo-intellectual stuff written by people who *think* they're a lot more intelligent than everyone around them. It's an interesting mix.
Overall... I kept it as a bathroom book. Worth the lettuce if you like eclectic reading and have a decent education. But if you listen to Top 40 radio and love shows like "Boy Meets World," it's probably going to be too weird for you.

Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004 is the leading software tool for the creation of Web sites and other HTML interfaces. It's remarkably capable, able to deal intelligently with everything from fonts and images to JavaScript for client-side data validation and embedded Java applets. In most cases, Dreamweaver will save you time over hand-coding--and yield better-looking pages to boot. The program's learning curve, though, isn't trivial. That's why Dreamweaver MX 2004: The Missing Manual is worth having on hand as you learn to use Dreamweaver, and worth keeping within reach as you tackle increasingly difficult Web development work.
David McFarland wrote this book, but the influence of esteemed series editor David Pogue is obvious in the careful coverage of features and frequent touches of humor (books about applications can be whangingly dull; the books in Pogue's Missing Manual series consistently manage to avoid this problem while maintaining comprehensiveness). The two men treat Dreamweaver's numerous features (and the even more numerous ways of putting them to use) cleverly, with a combination of procedures and side information that clarifies many oddball situations as well as straightforward conditions. --David Wall
Topics covered: How to create HTML (XHTML and CSS, strictly speaking) documents using Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004. In addition to the basic stuff (text, images, links, and frames), the book shows you how to build forms for data submission and embed Flash movies and Java applets. There's also a lot of helpful emphasis on Dreamweaver's productivity features, like snippet libraries and file transfer utilities. A special section shows you how to do some server-side work with databases.
Book Description
Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004 offers a rich environment for building professional web sites, with drag-and-drop simplicity, clean HTML code, and dynamic database-driven web site creation tools. Customer Reviews:
Dreamweaver Manual.......2007-04-11
Fantastic, really simple tutorials and suggested websites for further info. Deals with the basics to get an extemely powerful website online.
There are many more aspects to web design but anyone from the total beginner to intermediate should find this book helpful.
Good Book.......2006-11-10
Better than Dreamweaver MX 2004 "Training From the Source". This is a step by step book for beginners thru experts. I found it easy to follow and understand. It is also a good reference book for the experienced, which I am not. Why Macromedia could not furnish a book like this with there software I will never understand. The same goes for the new Dreamweaver 8. They want you to buy there product but not show you how to use it. This is a good buy.
Very good manual.......2006-07-13
So many software books are so confusing and difficult to understand, I really appreciateone that is clear and truly helpful, which this one is.
Fantastic.......2006-03-16
I have read this book cover to cover. You can read it in front of your computer and perform the tutorials or you can simple read an look at the illustrations. Both provide you with a very accurate experience. The online web site allows you to download all of the necessary files to perform your labs if you desire. It is simple, elegant, and well thought out book. You can't walk away from this book and not say that you did not truely learn to use Dreamweaver MX 2004. I struggled to learn this program, after reading the book, I have built several complex websites, complete with dynamic database integration. This book is that good!
The Dreamweaver Missing Manual Rocks!.......2006-03-15
I admit I'm biased because I've had Dave as a teacher and he's a great one, but his book is like his teaching -- clear, comprehensible, practical and most importantly, funny. Who wouldn't want to work on the National Exasperator pages? His tutorials are excellent, easy to use and fun.

Book Description
As the Web's popularity continues to skyrocket, so does that of Macromedia Dreamweaver, one of the most elegant and powerful Web-page creation programs available. Dreamweaver offers a rich, well-designed, WISYWYG environment for building cross-platform, cross-browser Web sites; but unlike most visual editors, it doesn't clutter up the underlying HTML programming by inserting unnecessary HTML tags that make large Web sites difficult to manage. Dreamweaver is a favorite of multimedia designers, thanks to its smooth integration with other Macromedia applications, like Flash and Shockwave. Dreamweaver MX (for Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, and Windows) marks the historic union of Dreamweaver and Dreamweaver UltraDev, a package of Web-database language modules once sold separately. The new, unified program offers even more power--and Dreamweaver MX: The Missing Manual offers even more easily understood, witty lessons for harnessing it. As in his highly regarded Dreamweaver 4: The Missing Manual, author McFarland livens the book with unique, live examples, that let the reader see and test--on the Internet, itself--real Web pages that follow the development progress of the book's chapters. There's even a step-by-step tutorial for creating an interactive Web database using Microsoft's ASP programming language, new to Dreamweaver MX. In collaboration with Missing Manual series editor David Pogue, McFarland brings Dreamweaver MX to life with clarity, authority, and good humor. Armed with this book, the first-time or experienced Web designer will have little difficulty using DreamWeaver to create stunning, interactive Web sites.

Not bad at all........2007-03-14
This book covers dreamweaver pretty thoroughly. My copy doesn't get much use anymore, but It was a good read.
Dreamweaver MX: The Missing Manual.......2006-04-12
The tittle of this book says it all and it's not kidding . I have an associate degree in art in Internet Services Technology and I code by hand using a variety of languages such as VB.NET ,C#, Actionscript, etc ,and own a lot of programming books ,but I write my code using Dreamweaver as a tool and the The Missing Manual as a resource. I have found information in this book that is not even in advanced dedicated programming manuals so it is allways the first book that I grab when I get stuck. My personal website photo gallery:http://www.sigmacumlaude.com was ,coded using a combination of asp.net and Flash MX Pro. The process was much facilitated by referencing The Missing Manual and I recomend it to any web programmer of any level .
A Reference Book I Couldn't Live Without.......2005-10-15
I use Dreamweaver MX to create interactive training web sites for a government agency. When I first started learning Dreamweaver MX, I bought three reference books. I don't even look at the other two books now. This is the one that sits on my desk at all times. I've never had a problem that I haven't been able to find the solution to with the help of this book.
I highly recommend it.
The Best for Learning Dreamweaver.......2005-08-23
Hands down this is the best book for learning Dreamweaver. This author is very informative and his style is very encouraging to the new user who may be daunted by the sheer complexity that Dreamweaver can possess.
Using Dreamweaver MX 2004, I expected this book to be somewhat outdated. Nevertheless, I had a great time learning how to use Dreamweaver since there are very few major differences between MX 2004 and MX.
Well-written, Comprehensive, Simply the Best.......2005-01-19
I've had a bit of experience with Dreamweaver, but this book rounded out my education. It contains all the information I needed (and more), has clear & well-written text, and an excellent structure that allowed me to access the information very quickly (they even made the binding in such a way that the pages lie flat). Not only is book accessible, but it continues to be a valuable resource on my bookshelf. As others have mentioned, one of the great things about this book is the fact that it also talks about Dreamweaver's limitations; options (such as frames) that could lead to problems later on. By the time I've gone through computer manuals, I usually riddle them with post-its in an effort to organize the information; this book is so well thought-out that so far I haven't needed to.
Earlier I'd bought the Visual Quickstart Guide's Dreamweaver MX manual (filled with post-it tabs in response to poor organization and because the information was so difficult to extract), but ever since I bought the McFarland book, the Quickstart Guide been collecting dust.
