Fantastic.......2002-04-23
Winnowill is at her worst and Rayek is shockingly (almost endearingly) vulnerable as the target of her latest manipulation. So our arrogant SharpDark Highthing desires not only power beyond his wildest dreams, he wants to be loved...
True to the original quest, the book is packed with dramatics: the reunion of Dewshine and Scouter, Two-Edge's confrontation with Clearbrook, Tyldak being noble, a last minute rescue from a soul-brother, Leetah grappling with Cutter's mortality, elfin homocide, and the final destruction of Blue Mountain.
Of course, its always refreshing when an under-exposed character finally gets his chance to save the day. Go Dart! AOOOOYAAAH! ^_~ My only quarrel is with Aroree, who has been reduced to a powerless, doe-eyed victim whose only hobby seems to be stalking Skywise.
Great book.......1999-07-03
Fantastic pictures. Tells of how the wolfriders escape from Blue Mountain(again)and more.
Uncovers a lot of hidden secrets of Two-Edge, and of Willow........1998-09-08
This book is great, because it uncovers the truth about Two-Edg's birth and childhood. Also it gives more description on how Winllow used to be, before she became evil. For the first time you se what Two-Edg's father looked like. I rcomend this book to big Elf Quest fans every where.

Book Description
Nervous Laughter examines forty years of situation comedy, decade by decade, providing the first truly panoramic view of TV's most popular dramatic form. Within this context, Hamamoto traces what he describes as the dominant liberal democratic ideology implicit within situation comedy and explains its enduring popularity. Examining liberal democratic culture, politics, and society he demonstrates how the sitcom resolves social contradictions. Borrowing freely from the social sciences, history, and literary criticism he explains the curious grip the TV sitcom has had on its audience for over forty years. This book critically assesses the relationship between the media and society bringing questions of power, equality, and democracy to the foreground. Nervous Laughter is important reading for both the specialist and the general reader in its analysis of postwar American society. Nervous Laughter is a study of liberal democratic culture, politics, and society. It describes the ways affirmative aspects and contradictions of liberal democratic ideology are given form in television situation comedy. It provides a close reading of forty years of television texts. Arguing against mainstream theories of mass communications, the author presents an analytic framework that looks instead at conflict and contradiction within class society. Challenging the legitimacy of airwave control by non-democratic social institutions, Nervous Laughter concludes with a modest agenda that might lead to democratization of television.

Book Description
In 1801, the first complete mastodon skeleton was excavated in the Hudson River Valley, marking the climax of a century-long debate in America and Europe over the identity of a mysterious creature known as the American Incognitum. Long before the dinosaurs were discovered and the notion of geological time acquired currency, many citizens of the new republic believed this mythical beast to be a ferocious carnivore, capable of crushing deer and elk in its "monstrous grinders." During the American Revolution, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson avidly collected its bones; for the founding fathers, its massive jaws symbolized the violence of the natural world and the emerging nation's own dreams of conquest.
Paul Semonin's lively history of this icon of American nationalism focuses on the link between patriotism and prehistoric nature. From the first fist-sized tooth found in 1705, which Puritan clergyman claimed was evidence of human giants, to the scientific racialism associated with the discovery of extinct species, Semonin traces the evangelical beliefs, Enlightenment thought, and Indian myths which led the founding fathers to view this prehistoric monster as a symbol of nationhood.
Semonin also sees the mystery of the mastodon in early America as a cautionary tale about the first flowering of our narcissistic fascination with a prehistoric nature ruled by ferocious carnivores. As such,
American Monster offers fresh insights into the genesis of the ongoing fascination with dinosaurs.

Bones of contention.......2006-12-24
In this interesting, well-written book Paul Semonin examines early (first half of the 18th century) fossil discoveries made in NY and along the Ohio River in terms of what scientists thought they were from to how people came to interpret them based on religious convention and, ultimately, national pride. When mastodon teeth were first found near Albany in 1705, they were first thought to be from giant man-like creatures; Cotton Mather wrote extensively on this belief, citing the giants mentioned in the Bible as his source. The fossils were also used to prove the Deluge: these bones were the "wreckage" of the Great Flood. As the fossils made their way to Europe, different interpretations took root: in France, George Louis Leclerc de Buffon declared that the fossils "proved" the idea of American "degeneracy" and "inferiority." This naturally brought about a strong reaction from Americans who were forging their own national designs at the time. Debate and speculation was intense and involved many of the leading lights of the day, including Franklin and Jefferson and the major scientists of Europe. Semonin traces all of the elements of these arguments and their implications thoroughly and clearly. For a while, before dinosaur fossils were discovered, the mastodon was the "king" of prehistoric beasts (ironically, when the first full skeleton of a mastodon was initially displayed in Philadelphia the tusks were put in upside-down, corresponding with the theory that the beast was a carnivore). This book should be enjoyed by those who have an interest in American history (the chapter on the discovery of fossils along the Ohio River is strong on exploration) as well as those with an interest in natural science.
Dig it.......2004-09-29
I bought and read this book because I recognized the name of the author as initiator extraordinaire in the '60s and '70s of two art forms, unnamed, unfunded, and unreviewed then, whose practitioners today reap the rewards of what foundations and critics deem "hot:" performance art and appropriation art. Both forms blur the lines between everything and make you see the world with which you know you are quite familiar in ways that would never have occurred to you before and as a result of which you see everything differently thereafter. Semonin started both trends under several other names which he doesn't refer to on his book jacket and his publisher doesn't either. So I will leave that mystery to readers curious enough to dig it out for themselves. What Semonin, the artist, gave artists who "got" it,
Semonin, the scholar, gives scholars who "get" the American Monster. Read it as a scholarly work of art, as artful scholarship, savor the surprises of accompanying our American forebears' digging their mystery, the root of our popular culture.
A Wonderful Blend of Science and History.......2001-05-10
This book was a delight! The author recreated in a wonderful style the amazing story of the earliest finds of large American fossils along the Hudson River and the Kentucky frontier, the scientist-naturalists of the time, how they worked and thought, and how it all fits into our early United States history. This book bridges several disciplines. As an environmental geologist I loved learning how a niche of my science fits into the historical scene. I recommend this book to scientists, university science classes, and the interested reader to add social and historic breadth to science understanding. How many scientists know of Thomas Jefferson's role in these early fossil debates? And, this book weaves together hundreds of details and several stories that tie religion, exploration, and social science theories to science. To top it off, there are 50 stunning illustrations. One of my favorites is the 1756 drawing of a "giant grinder" by the French mineralogist Jean Etienne Guettard. In this Internet age of instant communication it amazed me to realize that it sometimes took a year or more for scientists to share their data and theories on the "American Monster".
American Monster.......2001-02-05
In his preface, the author quotes his wife as saying, "Don't ramble-get to the point." Semonin never takes her advice and thus this is a book that should have been no more than half as long as this disjointed collection of digressions. There are really several stories in this book. I wish the author had decided which one he wanted to tell. Semonin can be an engaging storyteller and the discovery of fossil mastodon bones in North America came at a formative stage in American history. Too bad the author didn't find an editor who was willing to make him take his wife's advice.
American Monster.......2001-01-26
For anyone interested in how today's myths of the prehuman past came to be, this book is essential. There ar more than 30 pages of footnotes, as well as a lengthy bibliography, but American Monster is written for general readers as well as specialists. Semonin's style is fluid, well-paced, and rich in detail yet precise, and would be the envy of a novelist.

A wonderful children's book but suitable for all ages.......2002-06-17
When I first saw the cover, I thought it was Reepicheep from the Dawn Treader, the talking mouse of Narnia. It had a feather on its head, a needle of a sword and it stood on its hindlegs. This book deserved better attention, unlike blood and gore and cynical world weariness which seemed to pervade most fantasy books today.
Mus of Kerbridge is almost like one of Grimm's or Han Christian Anderson's fairy tales - of knights and castles, ladies and love, magic abound and courage renowned.
In a magical world which was not named, centaurs, humans, satyrs and harpies dwelt together within the same kingdoms. A political intrigue led to an accident which created another sentient race - the mouse of which Mus was the first. Mus was forced to infiltrate the chamber of Miriam, a centaur lady. Turning against his tormentor, and swore to protect his lady.
As war threatened the kingdom, Mus became the source of inspiration to battle-weary soldiers to rally against the invaders.
This book is very much written to relate to children, but cynical adults could learn a lot from it, if only to open themselves to the possibility of beauty and kindness.
Paul Kidd managed to re-create the fantasy feeling of childhood days in an expanded puss-in-boots fantasy.
Coming back into print!...?.......2001-10-17
From the website of original publisher TSR regarding Paul Kidd: "Up and coming novel releases may include... Mus of Kerbridge (2nd release by Streamline)..."
Those of us who have taken immense pleasure from reading and re-reading "Mus of Kerbridge" will be glad to see a second printing hit the shelves. Notice the quote says "may include" - it would be helpful if Mus fans wrote to Mr. Kidd via TSR and to Streamline to help facilitate this reprinting!
Perhaps it was the cute and rather silly picture on the cover, but "Mus of Kerbridge" didn't sell nearly as well as the story inside the cutesy cover deserved. I bought it when it first came out, in spite of the cover... and loved it! The story is as enjoyable for adults as it is for children; it has been a well-received and well-read gift many times. It has certainly kept my attention throughout the years and I still enjoy it quite as much as I did the first time!
The dialogue is occasionally a bit overdone in my opinion, but can not detract from the overall charm of this well-told tale. The plot is well-woven and the characters have substantial personalities and emotions. They are admirable people, even the enemy queen, showing strength of spirit and courage and a great lesson in appreciation for life.
I can't believe it's out of print.......2001-06-13
Mus is one of my favorite books, so I thought I'd share it with a teacher at my school; little did I know it would take a lot of effort to find a new copy of my own. This book is one of the best examples of fantasy I can think of, and I just adore it. It's on my top 5, and that's saying a lot. Let's get it back into print! It deserves it a lot more that most books out there now.
the return to an old friend.......2001-04-16
I have already left a message here, but I feel that something else is necessary. After I left a review here, the author was kind enough the email me and thank me. I was too shy to email back and thank him. But I would just like to say that I love this book and that I hope it returns to print. It should,it really should. Even after a couple of years, It is stil my favorite book, and I have read many books. The other people here have reiterated their wonder in the quality of this novel so I will not be redundent. But, let me say that I find the book a sort of sanctuary where I can return to after I grow weary or depressed. Not that I am obsessed or anything. I only read it about 6 times :0)
Great Book.......1999-08-28
I have read this book many times, but to me, it never gets old. It is my favorite book of all time, and that is a large statement. I think it is well written, action packed, sweet, and very comical. I would reccomend this book to anyone in search of a good novel. There is never a dull moment, but it has enough depth to make it great.

Could Use a Few Tips for Day Trading Online.......2006-06-26
This book was very good back in the "buy and hold years" of 1998-2001. It's still a good read and very enjoyable.
These days, in my opinion, a trader needs more practical and up to date strategies especially if he wants to start day trading online on a regular basis.
Stock trading is all about making buy and sell decisions. When you make a trade either your going to lose money or your going to make money, and some other times you will break even. When you win some body else will lose and so forth, but that's NOT what's important.
The most important aspect of day trading is the "know-how" strategies you employ to make your buy & sell decisions. There are many "surefire" systems outhere, but you need to test them in order to discover which ones help you the most. That's part of your homework as an online stock trader. Test, test and test again.
Complicated systems that rely on a truck load of technical analysis indicators can make you slow, and being slow in this game can be as dangerous as not knowing what to do in the first place.
I think the worst thing that can happen to a beginner trader is to get information OVERLOAD. It's better to go step by step, and test a simple trading system that can show you how to focus on concrete ways to profit day in and day out.
Fortunatly there are some good sites on the web today that can show you how to trade in a practical and effective way. One of those sites is Smart Day Trading (SmartDayTrading com)
In the end, day trading is all about buying and selling according to your knowledge FILTER. Once you master and follow youre proven filter parameters like a clock, you can expect to start making serious amounts of cash on a consistent basis.
Investing Online by Gray and Menche review by Ellen Hochman.......2001-07-14
Excellent and interesting, not stuffy at all. Easy to follow with practice lessons at the end of every chapter. Good essential information for the beginner investor, not just for online traders. Covers the "how-to's" of analyzing stocks and mutual funds to add to your portfolio put in easy to understand and fun terms. By: Ellen Hochman
Very detailed book on all aspects of online investing.......2000-05-25
This is a very detailed book which covers all aspects on online investing. Most people can skip chapter 1 which shows basic Internet browsing and navigation. The rest of the book shows web pages you can look at. I like this book because the authors highlight and explain the different parts of each of the web pages. At 400 pages, this book is short enough so that you won't get bored and long enough that the author just don't explain a concept in a sentence or a paragraph. The authors give enough detail so that you can understand and profit.
Pleased Reader.......2000-01-17
"Teach Yourself Investing Online", by Thomas S. Gray and Claire Mencke, is the ideal book for online investors, both novices and old-timers. The information is easy to understand, easy to read, and very interactive. There are sites to visit, quizzes and worksheets to fill out, and pages and pages of screenshots and sidebars and intriguing reading. This book can be used for quick reference or for straight-forward research. Very up-to-date and needed in this fast-paced Internet world, with online catalogs and stock trading sites, this book is your manual to succeed in this day in age. The book covers such subjects as stock quotes to saving for your child's college fund to shopping online. I was clueless and, frankly, frightened of the stock market and Internet investments before I peeked at these pages -- now I'm hooked, making extra money, and learning how to budget my finances. This book is for young and old investors alike, and it's easy to follow, with clear language and straight-forward visuals. It was obvious to me that these authors know what they're talking about. A must! If you think you could never make it in this busy online investing economy, you need this book! If you think you know all there is to know, you need this book! Finally, I read something I needed so much!
