2 out of 5 stars Just not Batman.......2007-10-02

Grant Morrison's Arkham Asylum: A serious house on serious earth is an un-nearving gothic tale of insanity and more specificly, what drives someone to become insane. It's well written, specificly the Joker's dialogue, and the narration is obviously filled with Morrison's usual psycho-analysis and heavy handed symbolism. It's also virtually entirely painted by Dave McKean, which must of taken an enormous amount of time, although the art is usally so dark it's difficult to actually see what's going on. But for all that it is, it's just not Batman.

For a start, the Batman in this story is a clueless idiot. He wanders directly into what can only be described as the Joker's most obvious trap ever and then procededs to compete in a game of hide and seek, a game in which the Batman makes absolutly no attempt to hide and the villains are never shown trying to chase him down (in fact Scarecrow and Black Mask do absolute zip all except for walking around aimlessly in one or two panels). Instead the rogues wait in various rooms, acting as bizarrly as they're drawn.

For instance the now paedophilic Mad Hatter calls underage girls "[...]" while smoking a hokkah, and Maxie Zeus hooks himself up to some sort of electrical device and shocks himself while collecting sparks in a mettalic bin. These characters are apparently drawn like this to spotlight the various aspects of Batman's damaged psyche. Uh-huh. Remind me again what exactly Maxie Zeus electrocuting himself has to do with anything let alone Batman? It should also be noted that in Morrison's depection of Batman's enemies, Clayface is drawn as the most embarassingly obvious metaphor for AIDs, simply for the fact of talking about AIDs in a comic book because that's 'different' and 'confronting to a comic book audience'.

Yes the more you actually read Arkham Asylum the more it becomes obvious Morrison doesn't want to tell a Batman story, but just write a reasonably interesting tale and fill it with as much confronting violent content he can get away with. In truth this doesn't need to be a Batman story at all. Hell, Batman's hardly in it anyway! The few panels he appears in having him usally overhearing the Joker explaining what he's planning to do with Batman's mental state, or getting surprised and screaming "jesus!". Really, there is no reason Morrison couldn't have written this same story with a new invented cast (he re-writes the characters almost all compleatly anyway) except adding the Batman title to it increases sales considerably. Considering the amount of copies this book has shifted, this shallow tactic seems to have worked.

I could go on, about how the plot won't make sense the first few read-throughs or how the art barely is able to vaguely represent whats meant to be happening, but how long can a review be? The simple truth is this:

Never read Batman and will never have an interest in him, but enjoy extreamly dark stories with paedophilia, decapatation of children, murder, vague suspence and almost visible art?
-Then you'll love Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth!

    Actually like Batman?
    -Avoid

the story could have been longer to set things up a little better but over all this was one of the best batman storys ive ever read

4 out of 5 stars Decent, But Not Quite What I Expected!.......2007-09-23

What can I say about Arkham Asylum? It is a decent Batman graphic novel and it is a must read for die hard fans, but it is not on the same level as so many other classic Bat Novels. This story seems fitful in its starts and stops and really is quite simple on its most basic level. Batman goes into Arkham Asylum because the lunatics have taken over and he, along with most of the inmates, questions whether or not he really belongs there. The story is peppered throughout with references to Arkham's history and does have some interesting reimaginings of Clayface and others, but I was expecting a lot more after I read the reviews and heard some hype from friends. This is a decent stand alone novel but if you like stories that stick to canon, and if you are easily disappointed when hype doesn't live up, Arkham Asyluum might not be for you!

4 out of 5 stars I bought this for my husband.......2007-09-14

I bought this for my husband. I wanted it for the art but i didnt like them, i thought they were gonna be more like the front cover however my husband did like them and he said the book itself really twisted and dark a lot different from alot of the other ones. Deffinatly not for kids.

5 out of 5 stars The best illustrated graphic novel ever!.......2007-09-02

The art in this book is incredible! Each panel is a painting in itself. Very expressive and atmospheric. The story is a bit pretentious but still engaging, and a lot more grown up and interesting than the usual Batman cliches.

It's just wonderful to see a graphic novel where the art is so lavish and sophisticated unlike the usual cheap, simplistic stuff you sometimes get.

Dave Mckean is some kind of genius.

2 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

This book was very disappointing when it came out. The graphical novel craze was starting, and you had funky painting and things like that being popular, but the story, here, was just not very good, or anything other than a garden variety, run of the mill Batman tale. It was definitely not worth the money.

3 out of 5 stars Not so sure about it's "Best of" status........2007-03-20

Yes, the novel is really cool. Yes, the artwork is phenominal. And yes, Batman is nearly broken in this. But, really, would you consider this "essential" Batman? I am new to the scene, and have only read about 4-5 trade paperbacks, the last of which was The Long Halloween. I found Batman's dialogue to be trite and unintelligent, as Batman never is. It doesn't get dark until halfway through. I almost wanted to put it down at first read. It is worth getting, don't get me wrong, but not essential unless you like the visuals more than the story.

    5 out of 5 stars Poetic.......2005-11-24

First founded in the 1920s following the death of his insane mother, Amadeus Arkham converted his late mother's house into a mental institution, knowing little that he had set in motion a chain of events of horrific consequence and bizarre circumstance. Years later, the asylum had become a living Hell on earth, a mental hospital for the deadliest criminal individuals in Gotham City, the enemies of the legendary Batman. April Fool's Day has arrived, and the inmates have all escaped and, led by The Joker, have seized control of the asylum and drag the one man responsible for their incarcerations, Batman, into the madhouse and put him through a mad funhouse of mind cancer. Learn the disturbing origin of Dr. Arkham, and dive into the minds of some of the inmates!

I have always considered the Batman to be such a poetic character, and so this story is unique and fun to read in such its own unique, psychologically thrilling way. Writer Grant Morrison's idea in his book are mystic and focus mainly on the symbiosis between Batman and the insidious psychopaths he has time and time again helped incarcerate. "A Serious House on Serious Earth" is a Bat tale unlike any other, because the characters each represent something. Everything in the story is depicted as some form of symbolism, and include the works of the psychology of Carl Jung, the works of Joseph Campbell, and Lewis Carroll (Bat villain Jervis Tetch, the Mad Hatter, plays a particularly symbolic role here). The villains-Joker, Two-Face, Clayface, Mad Hatter, Maxie Zeus, Killer Croc-each represent important symbols, even Batman himself is a form of symbolism in this tale; Dave McKean's chaotic and mystic artwork is very effective in backing this up (each page actually feels like the inside of the mind of a madman). The main point of "Arkham Asylum" is about madness and facing one's own sanity and fears. Even Batman himself questions his own rationality and wonders if he is really all that different from his enemies. Because it is such a symbolic and poetic tale, "Arkham Asylum" is one of the prizes in my ever-growing graphic novel library. It seems to change every time I read it, and I appreciate it more with each rereading. The story is also brutal and frightening, and more fit for mature reader (it has a pedophilic Mad Hatter in it!). Batman graphic novels have become MUCH darker and more serious ever since the 80s, particularly thanks to Frank Miller and his instant classic, "The Dark Knight Returns." It makes me sad to think that all too many people remember Batman as a campy, comedic icon.

Amazon couldn't find this title for me, and had to cancel my order.

    5 out of 5 stars An inside look at a madman's nightmare........2005-07-08

First, there are two things anyone interested in purchasing or reading this title should know about it beforehand. One, that it is probably not for everyone's taste as it isn't your traditional Batman vs. the villain-of-the-week sort of story, but rather a darker, more disturbing kind of tale that focuses on a deep, complex exploration of madness, told alternately from three different points of view: that of Amadeus Arkham, founder of the asylum, that of Batman and his other persona, Bruce Wayne, and of course, that of all the madmen locked up at the asylum, including the super villains.
Two, that it is "Suggested for Mature Readers" on the back cover as it's probably one of the most unnecessarily violent and ghastly graphic novels ever published under the Batman title, although, I definitely think - regardless of it being at times a bit too disgusting for my taste - that it's also one of the most original and beautifully illustrated narratives ever created for the genre. The superb artwork is perfect for the story with its surreal, dreamy, and suggestive look, even if, on occasion, it gets a little difficult to follow, especially with certain clashing combinations of colors and typographies. Still, the lavish intricacy of the compositions and the broad range of techniques used by the artist are a spectacular visual feast worth the price of the book alone.
The dual story, told in a nicely interwoven parallel, on one hand, explores Arkham's past and how his reasons for founding the asylum derived from decisions he made during the most crucial points of his life, and on the other, focuses on Batman's present day mission to go inside the asylum and, while confronting the insecurities about his own sanity, regain control of the facility after it's been taken over by the Joker.
Arkham's story is from beginning to end an emotional journey through the situations and escalating tragedies that can slowly drive a man insane. It's marvelously shrouded in a veil of mystery and superstition, and brilliantly placed in time during the beginning of the 1900's both by the overall mood of the art and the historical details sprinkled here and there, including, among others, having Arkham meet and learn from both Carl Jung and Aleister Crowley.
Batman's story, told from both his point of view and that of the inmates' is, on the other hand, a lot darker, more twisted and sadly less consistent. Our hero's mischaracterization, present throughout the whole story, is obvious from his first line of dialogue, with which he's not only portrayed as a constantly daunted man, but also as one who reacts with shock and disbelief to the inmates' atrocities and maniacal behavior that he's so used to fighting. Contrastingly, the clever analysis of Joker's psychosis is brilliant right to very last page of the book, even in spite of the endless sexually perverted innuendos from him - who even hints at a homosexual relationship between Batman and Robin - that somewhat lessen the impact of the story's emotional momentum.
The story concludes with the most satisfactory ending I've so far encountered in any graphic novel - worthy of a 5-star rating on its own -, an excellent comparison of the contrasts and similarities between Arkham and Batman's sense of duty, the ghosts of their pasts, and the skeletons in each one's closet.
As you'd expect from the title, along with the Joker, a fair amount of villains make an appearance, enriching Arkham Asylum's decadent milieu, among them Two-Face, Mad Hatter, Scarecrow, Killer Croc, Clayface, Prof. Milo, Dr. Destiny, Maxie Zeus, Black Mask, etc. The constant references to April Fools' Day and Alice in Wonderland, the changes introduced to Two-Face's alter ego, Harvey Dent, and the re-imagining of some of the other super villains, are truly delightful as well. But where the most pleasant surprises of the story lie for me are on Batman's iterated questioning of the "cures" administered to the inmates by the asylum's doctors, and the contemplation of the possibility that madness might not only be a physical illness but that it could also be a contagious disease.
Despite the fact that this book could use some degree of fine-tuning in a few places and a little less unwarranted violence in others, overall it holds its own and delivers a fantastic story about how different people perceive the world around them when they see it through their own demented biases.
This volume is definitely a must-have addition to any serious Batman collection.

Although a bit better than his "Hollywood and Whine.....," this book is rather unfunny for the most part. There were some quips that made me smile, but, as a whole I was just slightly pleased with this book. It is full of quotes by celebrities about each other. It is good to read at least once.

A wonderful collection of mostly bitchy quotes from stars on stars, stars on directors, directors on stars, etc. Most of it was taken with a grain of salt by this reader though, since I tend to doubt the veracity of much that is quoted by reporters - especially entertainment reporters. A few more quotes of a friendly, more supportive nature would've been nice to find (I'm just as fascinated by Hollywood freindships as I am with thier fueds) -but I guess "that's showbiz, kids"! One of the most delicious reads you could have from the biggest blabbermouth on the planet, "Babble On" is delightful. I was fortunate to get an out-of-print hardback copy. The book is in excellent condition and the packaging couldn't have been safer. I had been looking for this book for years and it was always sold out everywhere until it finally went out of print. I wasn't looking for truth and wisdom when I sought this book out. I was looking for a good old salacious read and that's what I got. "Babble On" is consistently interesting and often hilarious. Just how factual the quotes are I couldn't say, but I couldn't put it down. Let's face it, pretentiousness can be very funny and Hadleigh delivers the goods here.

                                    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Usually Dummies books are good, but this one...........2004-08-07

A horrible book to introduce you to Flash and a waste of money. At the end, I really didn't understand how the program worked - only how certain tasks are done. There's a lot of fluffy chapters. A much better book is Rosanna Yeung's Flash MX 2004 Hands-On Training.

I bought this Dummies book based on the quality of other Dummies books I have, but this one was a real disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars OK, but feels like a copy/paste from old book/flash version........2004-04-20

This book is pretty good but has some flaws.

                                    1. Although I haven't read the previous Dummies book for Flash MX (non-2004) by these authors, I get the feeling that the book inherits much of its content from it. Some of the features mentioned in the book just don't seem to exist in my copy of Flash MX 2004 Pro, like the common sound library. I purchased & downloaded my copy of Flash from Macromedia, so perhaps I didn't get the sounds because of that. Next time, I'll definitely get the CD...

                                    2. The examples from the CD are old and most of them give the warning to save in Flash MX 2004 when you close them, that is, they are from previous versions of Flash. The first example even uses an image file that I had to load & export using a graphics program to correct the transparency of the image. That said, the examples are not horrible, but most are contributions from others and not designed/developed by the authors.

                                    3. There are some worthless chapters and appendixes like some of the top 10 chapters and how to install Flash appendix. Considering how sites come & go on the Internet I'm surprised space was used to list the authors top 10 favorite Flash sites. It's only a couple of pages, but might fit better on the authors web site where updates can be more current.

Overall, about 90% of the book will be relevant but there may be other books that are more focused on the MX 2004 version of Flash. If you don't know anything about Flash, you'll come away knowing how to do a lot of the basic stuff after reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for those starting out.......2003-12-22

Before reading this book, I had never used Flash and had only created websites by writting my own HTML. After reading the first few chapters, I was able to create my first movie! This book is definitley for beginners like me and is a great book to get you up and running. I would certainly recommend it for those starting out.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction and reference for Flash.......2003-12-06

Finkelstein and Leete have written the perfect introduction and reference for Flash.

I recently started using Flash because one of my clients' legacy websites had a couple of Flash animations that needed to be updated. I stumbled around with Macromedia's documentation and a couple of online websites, but somehow Flash kept doing things I didn't expect.

Finally, I found this book and read it cover to cover. "Oh, of course!" I kept saying as I read. "There's a neat technique for layering. That's how to reduce the file size. That's how to make it run faster. That's how to get the sound to synchronize with the motion." On and on. Macromedia should just ship this book with their software. Plus the book comes with a CD-ROM packed with useful stuff.

My client is thrilled with my new versions of his Flash animations.

I want to especially commend the authors on Chapters 12 and 13, "Putting it all together" and "Publishing your Flash files." This is where I found that information that showed me how to put out a clean professional final product.

I've gotten so into Flash that I rewrote a complete interactive game in Flash. It used to be in Java, was 500,000 bytes (not to mention the 2Mb Java library), and only seemed to run correctly on a handful of machines. In Flash, the whole thing is under 100,000 bytes and runs EVERYWHERE no problem.

I couldn't have done that rewrite without this book.

When you're done reading this book, I also recommend "50 Fast Flash MX Techniques" by the same authors, to take your animations to "WOW!"

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource for Newbies.......2003-11-30

I am writing to thank you and Gurdy Leete for your wonderful book. I am creating an animated, web-enabled presentation for our non-profit association and consider myself an expert in PowerPoint. Many of my PowerPoint presentations include audio/video which plays through several slides. I have learned through my Microsoft research that when converted to HTML many of the wonderful effects and transitions in PowerPoint do not work. Thus I made an investment in Flash.

I spent about 15 hours working with my new software via the help menus. I was so frustrated by this past Friday that I went in search of help. Thankfully I found your book. It is Sunday and I have created a one scene, four frame small example with a movie clip on the first slide, compliments of the included CD. It will run slide by slide or you can select automate with the button. I am so pleased.

I am sure in your world this is a small accomplishment, but I just wanted to let you know that your book covers the simple to the complex in a clear and orderly manner. Being able to complete the animated logo by page 28 provided much needed positive reinforcement for me.

Again, thank you for the excellent training manual. I am sure it will serve as my major point of reference for a long time to come.
