Taking a page from Frank Miller's SIN CITY, Kirsten Baldock perfectly captures the pulp-noir genre she was aiming for. Everything from the frame compositions to the hard-boiled dialogue, if you love to drink-in the world of dirty, gitty, hard-times, where your gun mostly does all the talking and the dames are an eye-full, then you'll love this book.

Yeah, smoking is bad for you, but damn, do you look cool doing it.

This is a EDGEWOOD CHEMICAL BIOLOGICAL CENTER ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A206693. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: To address public concerns over the safe destruction of the U.S. chemical weapon stockpile, the Assembled Chemical Weapons Assessment (ACWA) program identified neutralization followed by biodegradation as having potential for destroying the chemical agent and burster charge fills of chemical agent projectiles. This report describes the pilot scale study conducted by the authors at the U.S. Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC), APG, MD. This research builds upon the neutralizationBIODEGRADATION PROCESS DEVELOPED AT ECBC and expands that process to include the burster fills found in mustard (HD) agent projectiles. A 1000-gal immobilized cell bioreactor (ICB) system was used to demonstrate the ability of an activated sludge consortium to degrade the chemical constituents of the US Army's 105-mm chemical agent projectile. The study demonstrated the ability of the Water Hydrolysis of Energetic and Agent Technologies (WHEAT) and the ICB to degrade 99.999% of hydrolyzed HD and its schedule-two breakdown products. During the test period, the ICB system processed 16,896 lb of HD hydrolysate and 660 lb of tetrytol hydrolysate. During the system validation, HD hydrolysate and its breakdown products were degraded to below detectable limits in all system effluents. Through a three-step process, 50% of the effluent was recycled into the ICB. Liquid effluents were characterized as non-toxic by the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). The ICB, process, and study findings are presented.

It was one of the ugliest feuds in the remembered history of the frontier -- a war between cattlemen and sheep-herders. Frank Rachel rode into the Basin with nothing but a powerful desire to start his own spread. Suddenly, there was fighting all around him, and Frank Rachel was forced to call on the naked nerve he didn't even know he possessed, to kill -- or lose everything. Based on a true story, "The Fourth Horseman tells of the Peaceful Basin War -- the bloodiest range war in the history of the West.

                    Book Description

Every year, Americans waste millions of dollars on books that promise to fix all their problems. We buy each new one, believing its promises despite the failures of all the previous tomes, continuing to hope for that nonexistent magic bullet. Tom Tiede, a former syndicated columnist and the recipient of numerous journalism awards, just might be able to cure us of this addiction. In Self-Help Nation, Tiede skewers the authors of self-help books, whom he compares to modern-day snake-oil peddlers exploiting our weaknesses. As he slashes his way merrily through his least favorite books, Tiede posits a larger cultural argument about why we as a nation have fallen prey to the self-help juggernaut. Waging an eloquent attack on the salaciousness and irresponsibility of the media, the self-absorption of the Baby Boom generation, our fascination with celebrity, and other cultural afflictions, Tiede offers insightful commentary on what we've lost in our hyperaccelerated culture and calls for a return to the timeless American value of self-reliance. In urging us to trust ourselves, Tiede is perhaps writing just another self-help book, a sure sign of the mess we've gotten ourselves into. Regardless, Self-Help Nation is a delight to read-wickedly funny, refreshingly candid, and ultimately profound.

1 out of 5 stars an expression of pure bitterness.......2004-05-21

Despite the Tom Tiede's smiling face on the dust jacket of the copy of this book I got from the library, his book is an unkind, trivializing, and ultimately bitter dismissal of a genre of work that he only partly understands.

Yes, there are many more self-help books than we really need. Yes, authors make more money on them than is reasonable. Yes, looking carefully at the self-help industry is a good idea.

But do we need this book? Should he be making money on it? Has he taken a careful look?

                    No, no, and no.

The author does show some insight into particular self-help writers, and like I said the industry needs examination, but he has a hard time expressing his insight without insults and smug scorn.

I think Tiede gives his reason for writing this book in the last chapter: bitterness at feeling no longer at home in his chosen profession, journalism, and at the rejection of the work he tried to do with the newspaper he ran. It's a pity that he chose to express his bitterness this way.

2 out of 5 stars Well-intentioned; Similar in ways to www.LiveReal.com.......2004-04-17

Self-help, when it's taken seriously, can often become a seductive, perplexing, mind-spinning jungle. I've been there and learned the hard way. I agree with most of the other reviewers of this book - this book is well-intentioned, it's raw, it's a sorely needed message, and it doesn't quite finish the job.

There are some parallels to a promising web site I've found, www.LiveReal.com. It's one thing to criticize self-help authors (which is pretty easy to do); it's another thing to offer valid and even better alternatives.

The key ingredient, which LiveReal nails, is that the issues addressed by self-help are intimately linked to keeper issues, and the ways that various issues are interconnected. For example, self-esteem is connected to relationships is connected to spirituality is connected to . . . and so on.

While LiveReal is also pretty rough and raw around the edges, in my mind, it's still the best I've found yet to do the whole job in one place.

                    3 out of 5 stars Self-Help Nation: The Long Overdue...Who are Sapping..........2003-06-08

This is a ranting, raving critique of the torrent of popular self-help advice books and of the growing swarm of advisors getting rich off the incomplete, oversimplified solutions they dispense. Tom Tiede, veteran journalist, spares no author, dead or alive, in his crusade to wean the world away from bogus helpers and healers. For this we are grateful.

It's about time someone stemmed the tide of publisher's hype, misleading titles, quasi-authorities, talk-show spiel and pure nonsense peddled as fact and honored as life-changing truth. I commend Tiede for taking on the thankless, largely hopeless task of getting through to the spiritually blind and deaf who compose the bulk of humanity. His topics hit home, covering relationships, marriage, addictions, loneliness, obesity, self esteem, alcoholism, sex and more.

Mixing reason with humor, satire, shock and insult Tiede tears down best selling authors, such as Deepak Chopra, Denis Waitley, John Bradshaw, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Dr. Susan Forward, Terry Cole-Whittaker, Leo Buscaglia and more. Any self-help writer of the last 30 or 40 years is a target for his piercing pen. Then he crosses the line of political correctness into religion, sacred books and saviors.

Sprinkled among the tirades are touches of time-tested wisdom where Tiede urges us to think for ourselves and tackle reality with all its ups and downs, its eternal challenges that will not go away with secret techniques and magic answers. We get the impression that Tiede himself has come through the fog and found fresh air on the other side.

Unfortunataly, his use of four-letter words and vulgarities and his attack on souls considered as holy prophets and great message-bearers will no doubt turn away the very folks who need a wake-up call. Or maybe the language is part of the wake-up. At any rate, I'm thinking this book would work better as stand-up comedy in an off-beat night club, than an invitation to sane thinking for the book-buying masses.

Another problem is that he attempts to explain through logic topics steeped in emotion. Tradition does not yield to common sense and neither does superstition. Sacred cows cannot be argued away. Nor does Tiede recognize the slow, incremental, untraceable, personal changes for the better that may qualify as major victories. Somewhere someone reading the books he decries may have been lifted for a moment or strengthened to step around another scary corner. What more can we ask?

It may take thousands and thousands of books from bad to mediocre to excellent before we respond. It may take years of wresting with a single sentence to get a glimmer of understanding. Patience! Patience!

Finally, it would have been helpful if Tiede had listed all the books with publishing details in a bibliography at the end. Readers could find them easily, test his theories and decide for themselves the merits or flaws of the self-help market.

3 out of 5 stars Too Many Books, So Many Problems, Only One Person.......2003-02-03

Lately, I have been weary. After reading "Self-Help Nation", I came to the conclusion that I was tired of being bombared with books that tell me what's wrong with my life and then purport to tell me what I need to do to fix it. For the past 15 years I seem to have been in one big "change your life" blur. Nothing was ever good enough, or even just good. It couldn't be good, it had to be better.
Buddhism, Taoism, A Course In Miracles, Metaphysics, Hypnosis, Tony Robbins, Fit for Life, Self-Talk, Celestine Propehecy, Yoga, Meditation, Creative Visualization; you name it I've purchased and read a book on it.
                    No wonder I'm tired.
In "Self Help Nation", the author takes a scathingly funny look at the Wayne Dyers, The Deepak Chopras, the Louise Hays, of our world. Sometimes, he states, you just gotta take responsibility for your own life and make it on your own, without any outside help from these self-proclaimed 'experts'.
I would change that to pick a system of belief and stick to it, rather than going on the cafeteria plan and buying any and every book that comes out, hoping to glean yet another morsel from it.
The best part about this book is that it really opens your eyes and gives you a starting point in weaning yourself (and myself) away from the self-help and psychology section of your local bookstore.
The worst part is that the author takes way too many potshots at so many different authors. It's like watching your drunk uncle gripe about everyone in town, rather than giving you the good gossip on the mayor and the city council.
The last two words of this book are Self-reliance.
That's what it's all about. Relying on yourself. Remembering that everything you need to know is inside of you. Anything you want to change you already have the innate knowledge to know how to do it. Want to lose weight? Eat less and exercise more. There, I just saved you $20, so put down that copy of "The Zone".
Dig up a copy of Emerson's "Self-Reliance" and read it. It's free online in a thousand different places.
Then stack up all your self-help books, load them in the trunk of your car and give them to charity.
Or better yet, sell them here on amazon.com to other folks who haven't figured out what self-reliance is yet.

                      Book Description

The Hegemony of English succinctly exposes how the neoliberal ideology of globalization promotes dominating language policies. In the United States and Europe these policies lead to linguistic and cultural discrimination while, worldwide, they aim to stamp out a greater use and participation of national and subordinate languages in world commerce and in international organizations such as the European Union. Democracy calls for broad, multi-ethnic participation, and the authors point us toward more effective approaches in an increasingly interconnected world.

In one of Gingrich's most recent speeches, he "equated bilingual education...with the `language of living in the ghetto.'" While this argument is fed in snippets to the general public, the larger implications of such absurd rhetoric goes largely unquestioned. In "The Hegemony of English," the authors probe into some of the deeper and more poignant issues regarding the debate over bilingualism. They point to the fact that some of our policies go against the avalanche of research that supports bilingualism. If the education of our children is the most important issue, then why are we not listening to the educational research? Why are we still striving to create a monolingual society despite the fact that there are many positive aspects to being bilingual? Check out Language, Power, and Pedagogy: Bilingual Children in the Crossfire (Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, 23) for more information regarding bilingual education.

Not the best reading in the world, but definitely something that educators should be knowledgeable about. It is short book with a deep and important message.

                            Book Description

The relationship between a powerful United States of America and some of the central multilateral organizations in global society is an essential feature of contemporary international relations. 'US Hegemony and International Organizations' brings together a range of leading scholars to examine this crucial phenomenon. Its aims are two-fold: to describe and explain US behaviour in and towards a wide range of significant global and regional institutions; and secondly to examine the impact of US behavior on the capacity of each organization to meet its own objectives. The study explores US behavior and its consequences for organizations based at the regional as well as the global levels, for those located in different regions of the world, and for such issue areas as security, economics, and the environment. Although focusing on the period since the 1990s, each chapter places its findings in a broader historical context.

Malicious code and new exploit scripts are released on a daily basis, and each evolution becomes more and more sophisticated. Keeping up with the myriad of systems used by hackers in the wild is a formidable task, and scrambling to patch each potential vulnerability or address each new attack one-by-one is a bit like emptying the Atlantic with paper cup. If you're a network administrator, the pressure is on you to defend your systems from attack. But short of devoting your life to becoming a security expert, what can you do to ensure the safety of your mission critical systems? Where do you start? Using the steps laid out by professional security analysts and consultants to identify and assess risks, Network Security Assessment offers an efficient testing model that an administrator can adopt, refine, and reuse to create proactive defensive strategies to protect their systems from the threats that are out there, as well as those still being developed. This thorough and insightful guide covers offensive technologies by grouping and analyzing them at a higher level--from both an offensive and defensive standpoint--helping administrators design and deploy networks that are immune to offensive exploits, tools, and scripts. Network administrators who need to develop and implement a security assessment program will find everything they're looking for--a proven, expert-tested methodology on which to base their own comprehensive program--in this time-saving new book.

5 out of 5 stars Network Security Assessment.......2005-07-20

explainsa variety of exploits and tells you how to harden your network. This book is very well researched and extremely well written and is reader friendly, as some security books leave the reader lost in techno babble, not this book however very easy reading it now sits on my desk as a ready reckoner.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book for security policy enablers and admins.......2005-05-29

This is one of the few books that I have come across that focuses mainly on the innards of security assessments. The services based security and counter measures are helpful for threat modeling. This book is really great for people in the security risk and threat analysis for a quantitative and qualitative validation. Good book to help in setting up corporate security policy model.

Other people have already provided a good chapter wise run-down so I will skip that here...

                                    Buy this book :)

5 out of 5 stars Good Methodology and Specifics.......2005-05-07

I've read a heck of a lot of books on security assessments. Some turn into hacking manuals, others turn into windy documents on documenting the process and why each piece of the process is important.

Network Security Assessment talks about the methodology of security assessments, the how of running nmap, for example with specific commands and a discussion of why. I have really appreciated the book for this reason. A methodology in this field is sorely lacking. Everyone seems to have their own (myself included). NSA gave me some added tweaks to my own as well as a few more tools to explore.

Tools, free and commercial, are part of our trade, and they change constantly, so almost any published book that references tools will be seen as out of date quickly. The author makes the effort, however, to discuss tools as wells as examples from the tried and true ones we all know and love.

The author chooses not to include wireless technologies, for which I have to "ding" him; he leaves it to "full-blown penetration testing," and I feel it belongs in any security assessment.

That being said, one of the best I've read recently, and I highly recommend it for what it DOES cover.

4 out of 5 stars Getting into the technical nitty-gritty of assessments.......2005-05-04

Recently I published a review of "Security Assessment - Case Studies for Implementing The NSA IAM". In other reviews of this book, one person was upset that it did not focus on technical aspects of security assessments, but this person missed the point of that book. What this person should have read, in addition to that book, is Network Security Assessment (Chris McNab, O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2004, 371 Pages). This book provides a technical deep dive into security assessments to complement Security Assessment.

Whenever I read a new book, I hope to learn something new that I did not know before. This book did not disappoint me as very early on the author presents an overview of assessment standards. In addition to the NSA IAM covered last night, this book offers an overview of CSEG Check, which is the British Standard to evaluate and accredit security testing teams in the UK to do government work. The author also recognizes the three levels of assessment in the NSA IAM and clearly states that this book only covers the assessment and Red Team levels, as these are the nuts and bolts that take place on the project. This recognition is what makes this book the perfect complement to Security Assessment.

This book is not for managers and sales people, it is for the people who need to do the actual assessments. The book provides detailed technical information on tools, shows how to test services, application testing and more. Now, this is not a book I run to excited to read for readings sake, but it is a reference that I can use to identify tools and tasks my teams may need to undertake or if I need to provide an independent review of a proposal for a client.

The author also provides a number of helpful tips for when to use and not use systems in a networked environment, which may be useful for practitioners. He also provides a number of mitigation strategies depending on what is being tested.

                                    Who Should Read This Book

If you do not have a desire or need to get into technical nitty-gritty details, this book is not for you. If you want a reference book for proposal development for your day-today job, this might be an ideal reference for you. But do not go into it expecting anything outside of the purely technical realm. You will end up frustrated and disappointed. The book for you is "Security Assessment - Case Studies for Implementing The NSA IAM".

                                    Scorecard

Birdie on a long par 5 (Good book, but nothing that really jumped out and grabbed my attention)

3 out of 5 stars Good book for assessments overview.......2005-02-26

Network Security Assessment is a quite good book. It lists many scanning tools and techniques appliable on different network aspects, reordering ideas to a confused security beginner.

I need to say it doesn't do an in-depth scanning analysis for any assessment aspect, and few chapters are more tools lists than else. I also disagree on subjects placement in chapters.
But it has a wide range of discussed arguments and I appreciated it very much.

Readers with no strong knowledge on scanning techniques should consider this book a good starting point for deeper studies on every argument quoted in it.
Readers with enough knowledge on widely used scanning techniques have nothing new to learn here.
