        Book Description

"Girls in Trouble with the Law offers readers a brilliant window for re-viewing the gender, race, and class politics of juvenile justice. Readers will be filled with outrage, and yet fueled by Schaffner's passionate sense of possibility and vision for 'what must be.'"--Michelle Fine, Distinguished Professor of Psychology, The Graduate Center, CUNY "This is a superb work, intermingling poetry, narrative, interviews, and examples to create a fascinating overview of what girls experience in the juvenile corrections system, as well as how they are perceived by the people entrusted with their care. Schaffner's book is well-conceived and beautifully written."--Lynn Chancer, author of High Profile Crimes: When Legal Cases Become Social Causes In Girls in Trouble with the Law, sociologist Laurie Schaffner takes us inside female detention centers and explores the worlds of those who are incarcerated. Across the country, she finds that an overwhelming majority of young women are from ethnic or racial minority groups, and most have experienced some form of sexual or physical assault. Focusing on the girls' experiences of violence and the inequities of the juvenile corrections system, Schaffner explores three central questions. How have changing social norms of sexuality and emotional expression influenced adolescent girls' trangressions? What do authority, consent, and choice mean to urban women in trouble? How do they experience and understand violent episodes in their lives? Offering a critical assessment of what she describes as a gender-archaic juvenile legal system, Schaffner makes a compelling argument that current policies do not go far enough to empower disadvantaged girls so that they can overcome the social limitations of gender, sexual, and racial/ethnic discrimination that continue to plague young women growing up in the contemporary United States. Laurie Schaffner is an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. A Volume in the Rutgers Series in Childhood Studies, edited by Myra Bluebond-Langner.

        Book Description

Her classroom was the last stop for a group of troubled kids. Teacher LouAnne Johnson, the petite ex-Marine of Dangerous Minds, was their last chance. The boys, like handsome Latino Julio Escovar, expected to end up in jail. The girls, like regal, golden-skinned Simoa, often mysteriously disappeared. But not in LouAnne Johnson's class.Risking her life, and her heart, LouAnne cajoled, bribed, and loved these teens. She went out on tough urban streets to track down Simoa, she faced a dangerously angry father to get pretty, talented Araceli into art school, and she fought drug pushers, trouble-making dropouts, and burned-out teachers to leave her kids alone. Her goal was to get her kids to graduation. Her method? Believe in them....until they believed in themselves.

I've worked in high schools for the past several years, and now am trying to get a job as a teacher. This book will be on my shelf to assist me with dealing with my class. Her methods are great! Too many teachers are so uptight that they are the cause of their own classroom problems. This author shows that great results can be had with compassion, a sprinkle of humor and a true love of her students.

5 out of 5 stars Feel the LOVE!.......2006-01-17

What a wonderful book, for teachers, students, parents, anyone who might need to be reminded of how much we have to give, if we just "will". The author shows her love for her students in every passage, and it was well written, witty, and a wonderful read.

Highly recommended as an entertaining, and insightful, book on teaching children who need love desperately.

        5 out of 5 stars Fine Teaching.......2002-03-15

I had the wonderful chance of reading this book. This book made me laugh and cry and jump in suspense. Ms. Johnson is a wonderful teacher who deserves awards beyong awards. The book taught me to see other parts of education. I really enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to anyone who is going into the education field

        5 out of 5 stars I can relate!.......2001-12-09

This should be required reading for every education major. I teach in an urban school; Ms. Johnson had something some of my young colleagues who quit teaching after a year do not have--resolve, persistance, and determination. There are no "bad" kids, there are kids who do "bad" things or come from "bad" environments, but as Ms. Johnson writes, it is possible to save the kids by giving a lot of ourselves.

4 out of 5 stars How can she bear such a heart pain?.......2001-02-21

I'm also an English teacher who have been teaching teen-agers for 10 years. Teaching teenagers is hard work, very stressful, depressed by themselves and the surrounding of them. I don't have such energy of love to my students as Louanne Johnson. But I can feel her pain in heart because I myself love my students. They are devils and angels at the same time. If they were devils, I could ignore them. If they were angels, I could just smile, do nothing, and just ignore them. But they are irresistable.

I agree with Hal, her master teacher. He said to her, "Teenagers are supposed to be ungrateful little brutes. They're supposed to trample your tender feelings, break your heart. It's their job." He is always right. I wish he would be with me!!!

As I was sitting in my Art History class I suddenly remembered this book. The detail was amazing - I remember reading this book in my childhood for hours, just exploring the different intricate details. I realized suddenly that this book is part of the reason I'm getting my degree in the specific field of art history I am. This book plays on the imagination and the child yearning to explore.

5 out of 5 stars I grew up reading this book the Illustrations are beautiful........1998-06-09

I grew up reading this book, the illustrations are wonderful and are so detailed. The best pictures are at the beginning of the book, with a map of the area, which details the cold winter land to the north and the warm summer land of the trumpets to the south. The pictures use real wildlife and down the side of each page their is a numbered key, which relates to the specific item on the picture. Such as Ladybirds, Robins and Blackberries. The story is marvellous, as the trumpets hibernate through the winter, and have to take a underground train to their lair. But trouble is in store for them when the enemies of the north advance. But with the help of the animals, the trumpets save the day.

                  Book Description

Trouble with Girls features Parker Hayes--a likeable guy looking for love and sex--at various points in his life in ten interconnected stories, from junior high and high school to post-grad and thirtysomething living in the real world. He's struggling to figure out how to be a man, and how to get--and hold on to--a woman.

It seems that girls aren't paying any attention to Parker, or he's prematurely breaking up with women he's still in love with, or he's stringing along exes just to fill the time, then driving himself crazy trying to win them back. His best intentions never seem to turn out quite right. Though he hardly wants to admit it, it's obvious that Parker has trouble with girls. ?

a delightful, insightful, entertaining coming of age story that will resurrect a ton of memories from your adolescence to young adulthood. You should read/watch this rising young fiction star -- he will eventually fill a whole shelf on your bookcase.

                  3 out of 5 stars Young lust.......2003-04-29

This is a well-written but inconsistent collection of short stories, intended to be read in order and therefore attempting a form somewhere in between an anthology and a novel. But I think other books that have used this form or something like it have executed the concept more successfully, in particular Charles Baxter's The Feast of Love and David Schickler's Kissing in Manhattan. Some of the stories here work quite well by themselves, but the device of connecting them to a book-length narrative adds nothing. Besides featuring the same protagonist, an introspective but unremarkable dud of an everyman named Parker Hayes whose life the book tracks in chronological order, there is no continuity. Parker is given such meager characterization and his adventures synthesize so poorly that each story may as well have given him a different name and been presented independently. Other than Parker, only one character appears in more than one story (and she in only two), and no other common threads link the stories together. Sometimes this just seems careless. In one story, Parker has a pet cat, which subsequently disappears altogether, leaving readers silently to question every so often, "Whatever happened to the cat?" (Maybe this cat is Schroedinger's Cat, dramatically sealed in a box disclosing no certain facts about its fate.)

Fortunately, readers who resolve to approach each story as its own individual work will be rewarded by several clever and perceptive pieces. "New Wave" was clearly written by someone who has forgotten none of the salient sociological facts of high-school life. The story is a funny and touching account of the teenage tendency to assert one's individuality by thoughtlessly gravitating towards one or another cliquish movement (often based on musical taste) and the existential angst suffered when these affectations challenge one's authentic personality. (I would be remiss not to note a passage running from page 81-82 that hilariously captures the arbitrary allegiances of rock-and-roll fandom. Read the whole story for this bit, if for nothing else.) The other two highlights in this collection for me were "Grub Worm" and "Between Things." The former is a story of modern heartbreak with the usual accompanying self-pity, but Parker picks up almost enough self-knowledge to soften the blues. "Between Things" chronicles another staple of contemporary romance, the post-relationship relationship with the same person with whom one has ostensibly broken up. Which stories resonate best with any given reader will depend on the nature of his own troubles with girls. Female readers may be irritated by the one-dimensional characterizations of the women in Parker's life, some of whom appear to have been written according to Jack Nicholson's advice from As Good As It Gets: "I think of a man, and I take away reason and accountability." But Boswell doesn't breathe much life into characters of either gender, and the one-dimensional supporting women prove far more captivating than the zero-dimensional Parker Hayes. Boswell's insights into human relationships would have succeeded more vividly had he developed a persona to which readers could actually relate.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2003-04-26

This collection is for all you lovers of Paul Weller, all you readers of Trouser Press. It will make you wonder where all the friends of your youth have gone, those who grew up 'in various and sundry ways' without you. Lovely.

5 out of 5 stars troubled by girls.......2003-04-23

Marshall Boswell's TROUBLE WITH GIRLS is a well written, emotionally compelling, and just plain smart collection of stories. By poignantly revealing the ennervated soul of the post-modern American male, he creates a protagonist that we want to grab by the collar and shake ("You're blowing it!) and yet sympathetically cheer on to find fulfillment. Propelled by prose both Proustian in its circumlocuitous convolutions and yet obviously contemporary in diction and manner, these stories unfold in sequences reminescent of the slo-mo scenes of your favorite relationship car crash. Boswell knows his material--boys and girls, the seventies, eighties, and nineties as the threshing floor of American malehood, dating, grad school, "the real world"--and in these ten pieces, he uses that knowledge to engage the reader fully in the plight of his narrator's movement from naivety to experienced naivety. A great book.

5 out of 5 stars Sadam May Be Dead But Boswell's Sure Not.......2003-04-23

Marshall Boswell's collection of stories is simply wonderful, but they are wonderful in a painfully poignant sort of way. They focus on the life of a likeable young man alternately struggling and delighting in the quakes and throes of youth in Memphis, Tennessee during the eighties. These stories give the reader a jolt of pleasure and recognition--they take you back to those days, whether you were a parent, a child or an ageless hanger-on. There is not a whiff of false nostalgia here, either. Boswell is such a careful observer that one is translated back in almost Proustian fashion--swiftly, indelibly, body and soul. The tone, true to the collection's protagonist, is unassuming, cautious and at the same time full-blooded. But brooding over the work is Boswell himself, who knows very well--as his protagonist does not yet--that those aches and terrors of teenhood are worth the price that must be paid. The story "Born Again" is a masterpiece. To read it is to yearn mightily to return to one's youth, eyes and heart wide-open. Splendid.

Cynical detectives, femmes fatales, rain-washed streets, and a single streetlamp shining in an otherwise pitch-black night. That’s the beauty of film noir, a genre that portrays humanity’s dark side—and one that’s now enjoying revived popularity. Fans will find in this treasure-trove of noir facts all the information they could desire: a definition of the style and its roots; the classics and the turkeys; the key directors; the iconic characters and the stars who played them; and the authors (from Dashiell Hammett to Jim Thompson) whose novels inspired many of these movies.

                      Book Description

In this revealing social history, Daniel Thomas Cook explores the roots of children’s consumer culture—and the commodification of childhood itself—by looking at the rise, growth, and segmentation of the children’s clothing industry. Cook describes how in the early twentieth century merchants, manufacturers, and advertisers of children’s clothing began to aim commercial messages at the child rather than the mother. Cook situates this fundamental shift in perspective within the broader transformation of the child into a legitimate, individualized, self-contained consumer.

The Commodification of Childhood begins with the publication of the children’s wear industry’s first trade journal, The Infants’ Department, in 1917 and extends into the early 1960s, by which time the changes Cook chronicles were largely complete. Analyzing trade journals and other documentary sources, Cook shows how the industry created a market by developing and promulgating new understandings of the “nature,” needs, and motivations of the child consumer. He discusses various ways that discursive constructions of the consuming child were made material: in the creation of separate children’s clothing departments, in their segmentation and layout by age and gender gradations (such as infant, toddler, boys, girls, tweens, and teens), in merchants’ treatment of children as individuals on the retail floor, and in displays designed to appeal directly to children. Ultimately, The Commodification of Childhood provides a compelling argument that any consideration of “the child” must necessarily take into account how childhood came to be understood through, and structured by, a market idiom.

Marketing to children is tricky business. Just what is a child? Are children naturally innocent? And is it appropriate to direct advertising to children as if they are capable of making consumption decisions? Daniel Thomas Cook's wonderful book guides us through many of these issues as they applied to America in the twentieth century. He discusses competing notions of childhood and motherhood and how advertisers and merchants appealed to an array of sentiments. But marketers increasingly pitched their goods to a child's viewpoint rather than a mother's. This shift, which Cook labels `pediocularity', decentered the adult view and privileged the child's. In this process parents had to be educated to understand the importance of seeing from the child's point of view. And children still needed to be educated so as to discern quality and value, but the very meaning of quality and value became constricted and tied ipso facto to the market.

Cook's sources are trade journals and he makes good use of these sources, but some case studies of particular companies might have strengthned his argument. But as the blurb on the book's back cover says it is `a must read for all scholars of consumer society'.

In very academic prose, Cook manages to make the case for his provacatives views. He finds in the history of the children's clothing industry in the US from 1917-1962, a growing ethos to see the world from the "child's point of view" (something he awkwardly calls "pediocularity"). In painstaking detail in some places, Cook shows how the growing clothing industry increasingly shaped the fixtures, floor plans and overall design of children's stores to be oriented to kids' viewpoints rather than the mothers'. One result, he claims, is that children have gained the status of persons in our culture because their "needs" and desires are catered to, not just by the clothing industry, but by all parts of our culture--often even over adults. Among the interesting cases are: how the "toddler" was invented by industry and the "preteen" girl in the 1950s as the forerunner of today's "tween." If you are into this sort of reading, it pays off well.

As with the previous 4 volumes of Marvin Kananen's Bible crosswords, these are fun and fair, honest, not cute and provide an excellent review of Biblical verses. The NIV text makes the puzzle solutions more intuitive and the spelling less chancy than the earlier KJV volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Good book with good examples.......2007-04-24

Before I read this book I took more of a waterfall approach to my design projects. My clients weren't really involved much after the discovery meeting, proposal, and payment date requirements. Pay half now, pay half when we're done. That was the model we used. This book has taught me to take a more iterative approach, which really gets the clients involved. Our team can more effectively manage change and adjust our projects to meet the ever evolving needs of today's web clients.

The authors did a great job presenting "not so fun" information in a very digestable manner. They did so without being foolish "dummies". They also responded to a few of my email queries on subjects that I didn't immediately comprehend. Nice work guys.

3 out of 5 stars Great Book.... But minor editorial issue!.......2007-02-10

This book is a great book about project management for the web. It is insightful and provides very useful information. I especially liked Chapter 5 - Managing Change - and how the authors addressed common problems by providing a bulleted list of the symptoms and solutions to each type of problem. The authors' use of bulleted lists throughout the book work well and assist the reader with identifying key issues and/or things to think about. They also make it easy for the reader to quickly refer back to things and skim.

However, with that said, there is a minor editoral issue with this book. Everytime a bulleted list is presented the text leading into the list ends in a period (.) rather than a colon (:).

                        To illustrate:
                        - on pg 66, "Here are some tips for conducting a needs assessment." And the bulleted list follows.
                        - on pg 186, "...and they will be testing for bugs or defects in some or all of the following areas." And the bulleted list follows.
                        - on pg 268, "Here are some examples of successful Open Source products that are in widespread commercial use." And the bulleted list follows.

Having served as an Editor for several professional academic journals, this drove me absolutely mad every time I saw it. If the authors/editors of this book are going to be wrong, at least they are consistently wrong 100% of the time... which I believe is actually less maddenning then if they had gotten it right only some of the time.

If you can get past this minor editorial glitch that appears rather frequently, then definitely buy the book!

5 out of 5 stars Great reference guide for any web development PM........2006-12-13

Anyone working in Interactive Marketing, whether as a Project manager or Account Manager, should keep a copy of this book on their desk for everyday reference.

The authors provide a great information source for web projects, with chapters covering everything from the basic definition of the PM role within an interactive/web development project, to a detailed list of responsibilities for every team member. The chapters on team roles and Communication Cues are a must-read even for seasoned PMI certified PMs.

The rest of the chapters follow the standard PM process (Project definition, planning, managing the various stages of the project, QA etc), putting everything within the web development perspective. The real life case studies are a great learning tool, and anyone who has worked as a PM on a web/interactive project will undoubtedly must have already faced similar challenges.

Extensive chapters on Technical Build and QA are written without inundating the reader with tech acronyms and confusing jargon. On top of that, the book includes an appendix which addresses specific projects such as brochure ware, B2B portals, e-commerce web sites, intranets and e-marketing projects. Even better, a second appendix offers a great overview of what you really need to know regarding technology as it applies to the needs of a web development project manager.

Whether you are new to Project Management or a seasoned PM, this book is a must read and great reference for the next time you will find yourself managing a web project and a number of cross functional team members who all seem to have a different vision or agenda.

If nothing else, get this book for the CD. The content includes such useful sample forms like the creative brief, an issues log database, need assessment sample forms, and an excellent template for the dreaded technical specifications form among others. In fact, the CD content, along with the real life case studies, makes this a worthwhile purchase.

I'm working with a design studio that is now offering web services to its clients. This book has been very helpful, giving us a look at web projects and procedures.

It is skewed to larger projects than we will likely be involved in.

The best parts of the book are the descriptions of real projects and real problems.

Humor helps the message get through: that these kinds of projects frequently change, new problems crop up, people don't always react the way you'd expect and that it's all part of the job.

I was wondering: Why, given clints and good "implementors"-developers and designers (we are a small team), things go ugly every time?
This book gave me the answer - Poor management!

P.S This is my first book review ever.
