Book Description
The greatest adventure epic since Beowulf continues in this full-color series.
Hal Foster's Prince Valiant, about a noble knight in the days of King Arthur, began in newspapers in 1937 and continues to this day. It was Foster (1892-1982) who introduced illustrative techniquesand the sensibilities and standards of such greats as Howard Pyleto the comics page. Realistic depictions and sophisticated compositions had been curiously absent before him.
Fantagraphics' deluxe, full-color library editions of Prince Valiant each feature close to a year's worth of full-page Sunday strips, with this volume collecting strips from 1973-1974, written and roughed-out by Foster and finished by Foster's prodigious assistant, John Cullen Murphy, who took over much of the strip in 1971 and continues with it today.

Customer Reviews:
Not impressed........2007-09-26
It is difficult to have faith in a book on comedy that is so painfully unfunny.
Great Book on a Challenging Topic.......2007-07-11
How do you teach someone to be funny? I mean, can you teach someone to be 6 feet tall? One might think either you are - or you aren't.
So I approached this book with caution, in particular after reading the dreadful 'Comedy Writing' by Josefberg. To my surprise, 'Writing The Comedy Film' is excellent and actually seems to distill the essence, the science of comedy. And rather than being a treatise on how to tell jokes, it's foundation is in solid narrative and character. As a plus, it makes NO reference to sitcoms... this is about movies, folks.
Perhaps the only downside is that some of the films referenced - like the potty-humor remake of The Nutty Professor - are not exactly high points of film. This seems unnecessary when there are so many great comedies to choose from.
On a interesting side note, the book helped me better understand scripts I've already written. Sometimes they were funny, other times they weren't (often painfully so). I have a clearer understanding why.
Great book, highly recommended.
PS - ignore moron:forest review below. While many product reviews on Amazon are flooded with fake 5-star reviews, I doubt that's the case here since the reviews are pretty evenly distributed between 2 and 5 stars.
Good on analysis, less so on the practical side.......2007-05-19
Stuart Voytilla is primarily known as a specialist of the Hero's Journey theory of screenwriting, so to see him collaborate on a book focussing writing comedy film is somewhat surprising. As was to be expected, the aforementioned paradigm is the structural model used in the book. Voytilla and Petri delve into what it takes to write a successful comedy screenplay, and they start off with the absolutely essential basics: finding a comic voice, and the physics of comedy. These consist of three elements: comic distance (if you're emotionally involved, it's not funny), surprise and suspense, and the rule of three. They also discern 6 tenets which are present in every comedy: truth, deception, conviction, conflict, wish-fulfilment and worst fear, and chaos. After covering these primal building blocks, they then go into a lengthy discussion of the different comedy genres, and the structural approach specific to each. They differentiate between 10 genres, ranging from the fish-out-of-water tale to the mockumentary. Unfortunately, these genre discussions are fairly brief and less interesting than one might think. The structural elements are generally applicable to every subgenre, so the reader doesn't really get enough of a sense of their uniqueness. Moreover, at least one subgenre is too generic and overlaps with several others (the ensemble comedy). The first half of the book gives good advice on the basics of comedy, but on the whole it is somewhat lacking on the level of providing actual gag-developing techniques. As a whole, a book stronger on analysis than on practical application.
caution other reviews.......2006-01-27
I would give this book 2.5, but you can't give half stars. It had to be 2 rather than 3, because I think all the other reviews are written by the writer's mates. The book has some value, but is poorly structure, spends too much time talking about standard screenwriting form and illustrates points inadequately pointing to only a few films to make each point.
Writing the Comedy Film.......2003-05-08
Writing the Comedy Film by Stuart Voytilla and Scott Petri is such an amazing book. I am the President of Shriekfest, The Los Angeles International Film Festival and Screenplay Competition, so we see many scripts come through our doors. I am not a writer myself, but I do know that many writers should adhere to the rules that Stuart and Scott have laid out. They tell you what comedy is, how it works, the rules of writing comedy, and how to write every single type of comedy out there. They break it down into simple rules, it's so well written, it makes me want to take up writing myself. What I liked the most was that they refer to comedies that we have all seen. So, if you need help writing the fish out of water comedy, the romantic comedy, the sports comedy, the crime comedy, the military comedy, the teen comedy, the farce, or the black comedy this is your book. They break each one of these comedies down, by telling you what each one needs and how to lay it all out. I was really impressed by this book.

Book Description
This exploration of violence in films questions why adults are often entertained by films that social and cultural consensus considers extreme and brutal. Hill argues that understanding the process of viewing violence is one way to open up the current debate concerning the effects of violence to include objective and broadminded responses to this phenomenon.
Book Description
Paul Krassner has been making countercultural history for more than forty years. He was a cofounder of the Youth International Party, the Yippies. A former Merry Prankster, he has counted among his friends Ken Kesey, Lenny Bruce, Groucho Marx (who took LSD with the author), Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, John Lennon, and Larry Flynt. Founder/editor of the journal The Realist, funded by Lyle Stuart in the late 1950s, Krassner is considered by some to be the most outrageous cultural critic of his era.
Writings collected in this volume include recent articles from the Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly, Playboy, George, High Times, In These Times, and Penthouse. From John Lennon to JonBenet Ramsey, from Charles Manson to Monica Lewinsky, from Timothy McVeigh to America's New War on terrorism, Krassner once again proves that he is one of the smartest, funniest, and most incisive political and cultural critics writing today.
Customer Reviews:
excellent collection of Krassner writings.......2003-08-09
This is a great collection of Paul Krassner writings, some of which have been turned into standup material on his recent CDs. While a number of the pieces in this book have been published elsewhere, this collecton is quite distinct from most of Krassner's other books, with the exception of a few stories that appear in different form in his autobiography (one of my favorite books of all time). I recently read Ronald Kessler's book on the "secret history of the FBI," and was disappointed that he missed some of the FBI dirty tricks recounted in the first section of Krassner's book, "The Federal Bureau of Intimidation." Other highlights of this book include the sections on Krassner's friends who have died (Jean Shepherd, Robert Spencer, Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsburg, Anita Hoffman, Terence McKenna, and John Lilly), a section of articles on the "war on some drugs" and the section on "countercultural icons" (Lenny Bruce, Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Garcia, Ram Dass, and Ken Kesey). Highly recommended.
On a side note, this book recounts a prank by Jean Shepherd that may have been the first instance of a "flash mob" (pp. 78-79).
a fine wine.......2002-07-31
The cultural revolution we know as the Sixties happened because a unique breed of creative activist/anthropologists gotinvolved in making American culture live up to its ideals. Some of us were "trained" while others developed and applied their own exceptional intuitive anthropological self-cultural awareness.
Paul Krassner, besides being a child prodigy musician, a funny stand up comic, an outrageous satirist and founder and editor of the Realist, sometimes described as "the first underground newpaper", and a great friend to many great people, is also one of the key Sixties activist anthropologists who was present and involved with just about every important juncture of the cultural revolution. To this fellow participant observer, he was/is a model culturally aware activist and unlike most anthropologists, he was and is funny. Best of all Paul is still going strong into the new--rapidly aging-- millenium
Reading Paul's stories in "Murder" about his fascinating Sixties, Seventies, Eighties, and Nineties, friends--Lennie Bruce, Steve Allen, Abbie Hoffman, John Lilly, Ken Kesey, Jerry Garcia, Ram Das, and best of all, other fabulous people you haven't heard of- is like sharing a great bottle of Burgundy wine or some fine grass. Read this book...
PS. (The Seinfield viagra scenario is hilarious--Classic Krassner.)
Great Book.......2002-06-22
This is my first encounter with Paul Krassner's work. He is a '60s legend, and he still manages to write fresh, entertaining pieces, that really offer a different perspective. I enjoyed the pieces about Ken Kesey, Lenny Bruce, Hunter Thompson, Abbie Hoffman. I wasn't bored with any of the topics he covered, even the Monica Lewinsky affair, which is old news by now. It would have been boring if it wasn't dealt with Krassner's wit, humor, and knack for coming up with original story ideas, and ways to tackle an assignment. As a journalism student, I've learned a lot from Krassner, and I want to say, Thanks for the great book man.

Customer Reviews:
better than admin I (OCA) book.......2007-02-06
i have passed my ocp 10g exam last month, thanks to this book and bersinic & watson book (ocp all in one exam guide). i have to say overall this book is better than the admin I book also by sybex. the thing i like about this book is it covers more than the exam needs, e.g. how to create the rman recovery catalog, which is not found in other ocp preparation materials (including oracle's student guide for admin II training). i also find the flashcards helpful (also available in sybex oca), and the two bonus exams. but just be very careful when assessing the answers to all the questions, there is a few misleading answers i found, although it is very rare. the best way to find the right answer is to test the question on a practice database, or find the exact answer from Oracle's documentation. i would still say it is a good and pretty complete reference for your OCP 10g exam.
Not enough to pass the test.......2006-12-06
This book is jam-packed with info that the Oracle 10g DBA will need to know...unfortunately, its not enough to pass the exam. The book isn't necessarily at fault - the exam is full of so many trick questions and obscure references that cooincidentally are all spelled out in Oracle's training material (which you'll need to shell out three thousand dollars to attend the class and get the books).
In order to get OCP certified, you have to attend an Oracle class anyway, so skip this book and get the training from the source.
Proof-reading needed.......2006-09-15
This book apparently underwent no proof-reading. Careless and obvious mistakes abound. The publisher's errata page is of little use although the book has been published for nearly two years. Considering that this is a book you rely on to pass an exam, this is close to irresponsible.
I've only read half of the book, I hope the remaining is better.
Very complete coverage.......2005-04-30
I just passed my Oracle 1Z0-043 test after using this book as my sole study source, in addition to an Oracle installation I set up at home. The book does a great job of covering all the material I encountered on the test.
