Customer Reviews:
CAN YOU REPLACE MY ARM GRANNY?.......2005-12-30
After barely escaping with their lives from the murderous Scar, Ed and Al return to their hometown to get Ed's automail arm replaced. Al is in pretty bad shape too and has to be carried by their bodyguard, the overly vain and refugee from the Village People, Major Armstrong. The best workers of automail in the world are old friends Granny Rockbell and her granddaughter Winry, who is so happy to see Ed that she hits him in the head with a flying wrench! They're in a bit of a rush to get back to Central to find the notes of Dr. Marcoh, which contains the notes of his secret research of the Philsopher's Stone. But what are the kids gonna do after they find out that the library where the notes were hidden was burned down by the Homonculi?
Volume 3 of FullMetal Alchemist seemed to be missing much of the fluid action and emotional intimacy of the first two volumes. There was a bit too much goofiness and too little grit, with comedy undercutting some serious issues. Major Armstrong and Winry supplied the lion's share of the laughs while Ed and Al were a bit more distant as their quest for the secret of the Stone draws to an end. I think the anime does a much better job of developing the characters. Towards the end of this volume, the manga seems to get back on track.
The best one yet.......2005-12-20
Compared to volume two and one this is the best Fma yet. It is all I expected and then some! It has action, and all the suspence any manga reader would want. If you like good manga you should definitley buy this manga.(..)read the preveiw i know you'll love it like i do.
A great continuation to a great series.......2005-09-30
Volume 3 of Fullmetal Alchemist is absolutely wonderful. This addition finally brings in some characters from the Elric brothers' past, as well as enlightens the reader as to some of the horrors of their past.
The state alchemist serial killer from volume 2 is still on the loose, so the brothers are accompanied at all times by body guards. Those of you who have read 1 and 2, or are at all familiar with the show will understand how much the brothers definately do not appreciate that.
They continue to get into trouble as is always the case for the two of them, and there are some fun battle scenes in the last chapter. The last chapter of this volume, The Definition of Human, is the opening to a terribly sad arc which we will get to read in volume 4. I won't spoil it here, but I will say this chapter has some great battle scenes and some more plot twists are revealed for us to enjoy.
There are some wonderful extras at the end of the manga, like there usually are, and this volume also gives us a preview of the Fullmetal Alchemist book coming out soon entitled, "Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 1: The Land of Sand". It looks good! (This is a novel, not a manga, so I imagine there will not be any fun pictures accompanying the text). So check that out as well, and as always enjoy the incredibly entertaining artwork!

good nutrition lesson.......2007-03-27
This is a good book for people who need to learn good nutrition basics. Easy and fun to read and very easy to understand. I especially liked the brand recomendations.
simple, EZ, & easy to read.......2005-12-20
The book gives me a weight loss PLAN. Not, some crazy diet. A easy to understand guide (not diet) to lose weight and keep it off. She outlines the way to eat & lose weight. The author is smart but uses simple words, ideas, and a plan. This is not some flimsy paperback. She hits the nail on the head. My wife read the book & says "I have already lost pounds" by eating by the plan. ( she will not tell me the number of pounds???)
Strictly reference.......2005-05-17
If you want every diet book ever written, all in one book, this is it. It could be a textbook for junior high health class. It reminds me of
Effective and "user friendly" .......2004-10-30
There seems no end to the flood tide of "how to" books on dieting and nutrition. So it comes as a distinct pleasure to pick up Kerry McLeod's The Last Diet Book Standing and find that it's far and away more effective and "user friendly" than the usual title dedicated to help control weight and improve personal eating habits. Readers will benefit from McLeod's nutrition organizer, recommendations for designing a personal makeover plan to improve one's habits for a healthier lifestyle, and much more. Spiral-bound to lay flat for easy reference when filling out or consulting the recommended meal plans, The Last Diet Book Standing is an excellent, step-by-step resource for molding one's life and health for the better.
It won't be the last diet book standing on my bookshelf.......2004-08-21
This book gives lots of information in a condensed form for those who don't know what they are supposed to be eating. There is a formula for those who don't know how much they should eat. There is a formula for figuring out how quickly you can expect to lose weight. After that you are on your own with the many journal pages that make up most of the book. I notice that other reviews call it simple - I don't think so. It is a solid bite of reality, but I have this information in other diet books.

If positive thinking alone could strip weight off people, anyone reading this latest tome from the perpetually perky Denise Austin would be thin. Good vibes leap from the page, whether she's describing her own attitude toward life ("Happiness is a choice that is available to anyone") or simply introducing exercise information ("Burn the Fat!" "Build the Muscle!" "Get Flexible!").
Austin says that she gets more requests for advice on losing the final 10 pounds than on any other subject, and in response she's created a very solid combination of "eat less" and "exercise more," the twin pillars of any scientifically sound weight-loss prescription. Austin jazzes it up with some yoga- and Pilates-based exercises, an exhortation to move more throughout the day (she calls it "Fidget-cize"), and a "Mind-Body-Spirit" routine that serves as a cooldown for her three-times-a-week cardiovascular workouts.
Her meal plan is 1,500 calories a day, and includes weekly shopping lists, followed by easy-to-prepare meals that range from a peanut-butter sandwich to more gourmet fare like lemon herb-roasted chicken thighs. Sprinkled in with the meal plans are daily exercise tips ("Do tummy tucks while you sit in your car"), and a bit of philosophy from the school of thought she calls Denisiology ("A smile, a compliment, one kind sentence--those little things can make a person's day.").
The biggest strength of Austin's plan is that it combines good science with good variety; those who try it won't get bored with the food or the exercises. As for that always-upbeat tone, well, it seems to work well enough for Austin. --Lou Schuler

Customer Reviews:
those last ten pounds.......2005-08-19
As a person who is just marginally overweight at times, I have lsot and regained the same tem pounds on severa occasions.
I was therefore quite excited to discover a book with this title. While the advice was useful I was expecting a more scientific approach rather than the same diet lists that are in most books. None the less this book can still be of use even to those who need to lose more than ten pounds. SOme of the excercises were also quite useful
My first copy is worn out -- coming back for a second.......2001-12-08
We started this program 6-10-00 and lost 38 lbs at low point of 3-10-01. As of 12-08-01, I have given back 7 lbs but am still down 31 lbs. This program works.
One positive not mentioned in other reviews is that the the meal plan rationalizes grocery shopping. Prior to this meal plan, my wife spent time figuring out what to prepare and went to the grocery store nearly daily and sometimes more than once in a single day.
With Denise's plan, she does the main shopping once a week. I prepare the grocery list. The grocery list is sorted by aisles in the store, an extra bit of work to make up but more than justified by the overall time saving. There is some time (and likely even monetary) savings in the grocery shopping component of your life with this plan.
Most of the menus require preparation, on the order of 2 hours per day. For example, even a trivial breakfast of strawberrys and yogurt requires washing and cutting up strawberrys. The food is generally good and varied.
It is really the meal plan that has the highest time commitment impact, not the exercises.
It works, and it's Healthy.......2001-08-03
My wife came to me and asked me to help her get in shape. Being a workout fanatic most of my life, helping her with the exercise part was easy. But the eating part was tougher. I eat healthy but don't have any set receipes or methodology; so I bought Denise's book and followed it religously for the first three to four weeks, doing all the shopping, cooking etc. She lost more than 12 lbs, looks wonderful and really has liked the food. We still use the book has a guide but mix in receipes from other sources like Cooking Light magazine etc., but we maintain Denise's daily intake of calories (about 1500) and fat -- about 25 percent -- for my wife. Denise is so upbeat, sensible and fun to read and watch. Besides being beautiful, she is full of common sense about eating and exercise. If you want sensible, good food -- not "diet" food, buy this book and follow it. It works. Thanks, Denise. You're the best.
One of the best books yet!!!!!!.......2001-06-18
This review is mainly to tell you what the others (teacherwhocares & T.M.) didn't tell you. First off, I thought that this book was very helpful with tring to increase my recipe library and to also increase what I know about Fitness & Nutrition and the basics about exercises. I found this book to be very helpful!
The others that I meantioned earlier (teacherwhocares & T.M.)in this review must have been looking for some negetive things of some sort, or they just wanted to 'pick' on her book for whatever reason.
First off, the shopping list the is in week 1, you WILL use all of the things that are on the grocery list unless you decide to discontinue to use it in the middle of the week.
Second, the typical day that Denise Austin is talking about in the book is HER TYPICAL DAY! Shoot, if everybody was a fitness personality, buiness woman, wife, mother of two, and a avid fitness expert it would look kind of silly for her to just SIT AROUND THE HOUSE AND EAT BON-BONS ALL DAY! She does all those exercises to help give her energy throughout the day and if the person who wrote the review would at least TRY those exercises that Denise recommends then she/he would find them to probably be helpful. I don't exercise for "2 obessive hours a day" and I also do SOME of the 'fidgetsizing' that Denise talks about in her book everyday and it really works!
I think that people who are CLOSED MINDED shouldn't ever think about picking up this book, because that will mean more 'bad reviews' that shouldn't even be here! If you are serious about fitness and nutrition and are flexible enough to try new foods, then this book is worth EVERY PENNY!!!!!!!!!
A Cookbook way to lose weight.......2001-05-30
My husband and I have been doing this weight loss plan for 2 weeks now and find it a very manageable and educational scheme. It is very obviously based on the USDA's food pyramid, which is great for us. We're really starting to understand what it means to eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables everyday and how to better manage portion size, especially with starches and meat. It's given us some great new breakfast and lunch ideas, and I love the fact that the easy-to-prepare recipes can be doubled to two portions and leave no leftovers to fill up my fridge. Most of the recipes are pretty tasty, if simple, but the chicken breast dishes are on the bland side, requiring a little extra touch to make them better. Additionally, preparation advice can be a bit sketchy, leaving the reader to make assumptions about how things should be done. There are also some editing problems which add to the confusion, such as describing 1 oz. of linguine as "about the size of a quarter" in one recipe and "about a quarter of an inch in diameter" in another.
The exercise plan is very manageable as well, where I substitute my usual aerobics or exercise bike routines for her routines. Her toning routine is great - I'm already reaping the benefits in firmer muscles. The yoga/pilates routine left me a little cold, but has inspired me to find a video that may be more suitable for me.
Overall, I think it's a very realistic plan that should lead to better habits of both eating and exercise, which is really what matters.

My Health "Bible".......2003-03-01
I bought this book back in 1993 after listening to Larry North's Saturday afternoon radio show while living in Dallas, Texas. It was an "easy" read and made such perfect sense. Larry North is just simply inspiring.I have referred to this book on and off, rereading parts of it again for almost 10 years now. Each time I am reinspired and more motivated. This is not a fad diet or exercise program, it's a way of life.
The best book I have ever read on fitness.......1996-10-23
I read several newsletters and magazines on health, nutrition,
fitness, and longevity every month, and have read dozens
of books on health and fitness. GET FIT is the ONLY book I've ever
read where I could find NO misinformation. (Believe me, I looked
hard!) And this book covers
a lot of ground. Granted, GET FIT is no literary
masterpiece, but it's easy to understand and enjoyable to read.
If you're tired of fads and quackery, Larry North
is the real deal.

After reading countless diet books over the years, it was refreshing to finally stumble on a a spoof that shows how silly most dieting extremes can be. I highly recommend it for anyone who is tired of the "serious" side of dieting and doesn't mind a big belly laugh. Cute cartoons and hilarious copy.

I am very aware of my body and the state of my skin, paticuarly my facial skin. This book wonderfuly explains how to understand your skin better in a way that is easy to read. I just happend to pick it up in the "teenage" area of my local library while waiting for time to pass. I found the scriptures and comments on the side of each or every other page refreshing and uplifting, you could not find such truth or LIFE in Cosmopolitan Magazine. Kim Boyce has found a wonderful way in helping teens (and even adults) find a healthier way to look at yourself your skin and even your soul in her book "Beauty To Last A Life Time"!

Even my psychiatrist loved this book!.......1998-12-11
My psychiatrist, Dr. Sam Snatchaway, reccomended this book. What can I say? I was resistant, but I tried it. This book made me once and for all give up the foolishness of dieting and accept myself, and laugh at myself, for who I am. I call this book "Ha-Ha Therapy." Run (or if you can't do it like me)... walk to get this book!!!
The sassiest diet book at which I have dared to glance!!.......1998-12-09
This book restores my faith in humor of a darker nature. It will not help you lose weight unless you are laughing so hard you are too sore to eat, or are too depressed because you look like the fabulously full figured model (could she be the author?). It's not exactly politically correct, and it's not for the faint of heart, which is why I love it. Buy it. Enjoy it. Eat it. Give it to a friend with a sick sense of humor.

I'm Furious.......2006-04-15
I read the reviews and bought this book. It states: "Eat Less!" large font, approx. 50 pages. That's it. Not funny. I actually paid money for it.
Even my psychiatrist loved this book!.......1998-12-11
My psychiatrist, Dr. Sam Snatchaway, reccomended this book to help loose weight. What can I say? I laughed so hard I couldn't eat! This was a truly enjoyable book, with funny pictures. It actually made me laugh at myself and feel a little bit better about being who I am. Consequently, I had more willpower to take charge of my eating habits and be forgiving of myself when I wanted a little extra something. I say, "get it."
A very, very, very funny book........1998-08-02
Short and to the point. A must for all those trying to lose weight.

The first thing that Agnes Parker and her best friend Prejean learn at camp is that they won't be in the same cabin. Ugh. Now Agnes is all alone in a cabin full of weird strangers who all know one another already. And to make matters worse, she's stuck with a bunk buddy who's anything but her buddy, and everyone keeps talking about how Prejean is so beautiful and exotic. All Agnes can think is: Good-old-shoots-milk-out-her-nose-when-shelaughs Prejean . . . a beauty queen? What if she starts acting like one? And then something happens that makes Agnes wonder: Has she already?

the basics.......2005-07-27
A good basic starting point, especially for first time campers. The inclusion of a flashlight and whistle with the book is a great idea, as we train to carry a whistle and light in their pocket 24 hours a day in the woods. The book starts with the most essential information of all, what gear do I need to buy and what do I pack. It covers the selection of how to dress, food preparation, hiking safety, wild animals, and other solid information. Good safety stuff here, camping can get dangerous after all.

I might not camp out a lot, but I do love my barbeque! And this book satisfies that, with delicious recipes you can make on an indoor electric grill or on your deck. Even better, you don't need a grill for the side dishes, salads and dressings and desserts. I love the cornbread recipe and the Rocky Road Fudge is to die for! Easy to read. Binding lays flat so the pages don't turn while you cook. It's become a staple in our house.

Very Happy RV Camper.......2003-07-16
I like easy recipes when I'm camping and that's exactly what this book offers. The book features recipes from a variety of cuisines, so you don't get bored with the typical casseroles and repetitive fare offered by many camping cookbooks.
The extensive supply and equipment list is very helpful. I tailored a personal list based on the author's suggestions, and now I don't forget important items.
I didn't think I would use the substitution list, but it's been handy when camping as well as in my kitchen at home.
Not exactly for a camper.......2001-07-12
I was looking for more basic recipes with a minimum of supplies. The basic shopping list/supplies/cooking utensils she uses consists of 5 pages alone. Not a good book for simple weekend campers, who have minimum space/time to cook. Many recipes were based on an oven in an RV, which wasn't what I was looking for.
A great cookbook and useful reference for campers.

The Happy Camper's Gourmet Cookbook, besides being a great cookbook, also offers loads of practical camping advice. Joyce Ryan has drawn on her experience as cook and traveler to address the concerns of the traveling gourmet.
Selecting Your Equipment: Joyce considers the pantry to be a "personal affair". The utensils and items one uses depends on individual cooking habits and techniques. Her checklist is an ideal master item list for stocking most any pantry.
Loading Your Camper: You'll find advice on placement of supplies, how to choose storage containers, and how to label them.
Coping with Problems: Cooking in the extremes of desert dryness, rainforest wetness, and mountain altitudes are all covered with helpful tips and suggestions.
And 248 Recipes: recipes for everything: appetizers, beverages, breads, main dishes, side dishes, and desserts. My wife and I tried several over the holidays and we enjoyed everything we tried. Two which we especially liked were Baked Chicken Pecan and Pecan Rice.
I highly recommend this book be added to your camping checklist.

very good.......2007-01-12
i think this was a very good bio into the life of Mr.LaVey. After reading most of his books, this gives a better understanding of who he was and how he came to be the founder of the Church of Satan.
Anton LaVey - The Secret Life of a Satanist.......2007-01-09
Interesting read to say the least. The man portrayed in the book had one of the most interesting lives ever. However, his entire childhood and most of his early adult life until the creation of the Satanic Church was complete fiction. It is ironic though that the man who was the representative of the Father of lies just happened to be an enormous liar.
One who trully lived Satanic!.......2006-01-29
I notice lots of individuals enjoy pointing the Finger On this Devil of a Gentleman on the truthfulness of his life.Lets not forget that one can also say the same about the Life Of Aleister Crowley. For one who talked so much of secret cheifs,HGA,The crimson drips of saints blood on Babalons chalice and union with Ain etc He love to beat on his Scarlet women, lived from his followers purse once his inheritence ran dry,and died in poverty a Herione addict. The late Mr.Lavey has done lots in Both mundane and magical views of approach for one who doesnt like the RHP blah blah of Other Occultnik Viewpoints. HAIL SATAN!
Secret Life of a Satanist: The Authorized Biography of Anton LaVey.......2005-10-12
I recommend this book to anyone who really would like to know what a true satanist is. It explains the life of Anton LaVey from how be began his life to how he found the Church of Satan. And his erotic involvements with Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield. There are alot of interesing things to find out.
Hell's Own Carny Barker.......2005-08-03
I never knew Lavey. Sometimes, reading about him, one wonders whether anyone ever really did. If you can read between the lines though (too few can), there are some deeply funny and even profound brushes which can be had with the man.
In choosing to either deify or villify him, both his sycophants and his detractors seem to get it all wrong. Lavey is best evaluated warts and all, but also with an eye to the card hand that his critics desperately hide. A quick survey of the characters (or lack thereof) of his three biggest antagonists (the sources of basically every negative accusation making the rounds) speaks for itself. But to whitewash him of any fault would equally leave an impression unworthy of what his legacy suggests.
Much has been made about the fact that Lavey seems to have invented a large part of his 'past' and I feel, from reading this book that this is evidently true. This is supposed to prove that Lavey was a fake and that any of his ideas are suspect. If this is so, then the works of Andy Warhol, Vladimir Nabokov, Jim Morrison, B. Traven and Orson Welles should all be dismissed as counterfeit.
According to Freud, we all make up our 'personas' and attendant 'pasts' as we go along. However, if this book is any record, we don't all do it with equal skill or taste.
Perhaps Lavey's greatest feat of Black Magic was his ability re-enchant the world by awakening an interest in all that is lost, forgotten or damned by consensus reality. Perhaps... but even if he was nothing more than an endearing curmudgeon with a renaissance grasp of junk culture, all his 'artifacts' would still be worth a million kewpie dolls to those with eyes to see.
Yankee Rose indeed.

review of chess technique.......2002-12-02
the author an international master selects the most important openings and shows how chess has developed by analysing them. the conclusion that the queens gambit and ruy lopez are crucial was vindicated by the most recent world championship match between kasparov and kramnik.

AutoCAD 2004 Bible.......2005-09-11
I bought this to get refreshed in Autocad for a new job and would recommend it to anyone. I can't do without it.
Excellent & Worthwhile.......2004-09-28
A marvellous and first class, well written and referenced, extremely clear and as if having an AutoCAD instructer sitting next to you. I was a new user to this product and I feel today very comfortable to do my tasks on AutoCAD and feel that this book will be a good guide even for advanced users. Thanks to Ellen Finklestien and I laud your efforts and higly recomment the book to all.
Best book of autocad I ever read........2004-07-13
I have read various book of autocad, but they all seem very complicated and dificuolt to understand. I found this bible and let me tell you that is the best book I have ever seem. I recomended to a friend of mine who wants to learn autocad. This book will challenge you as a beguiner, intermedite or advance user. It has lots of examples and this author know what she is talking about. Believe me this one of the best if not the best autocad book I have seem in the market in my 10 years of autocard experience.
Yea - it's worth it.......2004-05-24
I have hundreds of books and manuals on various techie subjects and Ellen's AutoCAD 2004 Bible ranks high on my list for books worth the purchase. I have used AutoCAD for years but after moving up to Acad 2005 from Acad 2000 I thought I could use some tutoring. The book didn't disappoint. For nearly every topic there is a step by step, hands-on, example that the reader can perform. There are around 160 drawing files on the accompanying CD; one for each example in the book. You can open that file in Acad and follow the steps in the book and experiment to your heart's content.
All in all, this book won't disappont you like some I could mention.
Excellent AutoCAD Book - Something for everyone........2003-11-14
I have had R14, 2000 AutoCAD Bibles on my shelf for many years now. I picked the 2004 Bible to use as a textbook in an advanced AutoCAD class that I teach 6 or so times a year.
I was very pleased with how well it meshed with the way I have always taught this class (13 years last month.) Plus it is a nice "value added" item that the students can take back to work. My first class was very pleased about getting to use the 2004 Bible while in class and also about having a reference to study after the class.
It was funny because I started saying "take your Bibles and turn to page ..." it was like we were in church! I can not say enough good about Ellen's writing style, her use of graphics throughout the book and her expertise! It is all there in the Bible.
