Book Description
The PSI corps are a shady organisation within the Babylon 5 universe, generally acting with hostile intent to the good intentions of many characters. This lavishly detailed sourcebook provides a wealth of information on this sinister group, allowing players and games masters to make full use of the incredible abilities and resources that exist, whether it is for the players to take the role of members of a PSI corps investigative branch, or simply as a tool to thwart their own goals and ideals. As with all of the Babylon 5 books, The PSI Corps features original screen shots and frames from the hit series. Written by nominated author Gareth Hanrahan (OGL Horror, OGL Wild West), The Psi Corps is destined to grace any Babylon 5 player's collection and is sure to be an extremely popular addition to this best selling range.
Customer Reviews:
The Best of Bester.......2007-02-10
If you love Babylon 5 and are interested in Bester(a great performance by Walter Koenig)--you love to hate him--this is the book for you.
While it definitely can be used as an adjunct to the role-playing games associated with Dungeons and Dragons, it is written unobtrusively so.
Therefore , you can enjoy the book as a stand-alone book. It is a great companion book to the other ( Mongoose publishing) books which include a wealth of information suitable for either the role-player--or for someone wishing to learn about the history of Babylon 5 and the worlds and associations connected with it.

Book Description
Long before the Babylon 5 space station brought Humans face-to-facewith alien races, they discovered an extraordinary breed among their very own . . .
The year is 2115. Shock waves follow in the wake of astonishing news: science has proven the existence of telepaths. Amid media frenzy, panic, and bloodshed, Earth's government steps in to restore order--and establish tight control over the newfound special population . . . by any means necessary.
Ambitious senator Lee Crawford spearheads the effort, overseeing the creation of the Psi Corps--an elite unit charged with tagging and monitoring all telepaths "for their own protection." But the real agenda behind the crackdown is one of government control. Many question the telepaths' origins, while others view them as a coveted weapon. As the Corps tightens its iron grip, the stage is set for a cataclysmic confrontation--one in which the future of Earth will be decided.
Customer Reviews:
The Genesis of Psi Corps.......2007-04-03
Interesting in that it goes into some detail about a period of Earth history when telepaths started to appear, and how Earth society dealt with it (hint: not well).
Disappointing, though, to those Babylon 5 fans who expect something recognizable from the series. Because it mostly occurs a generation before the events of the TV series, you won't see any of your favorite characters in it. If that's important, then skip this one.
I feel my mind going..........2005-11-22
J. Michael Straczynski really fizzled when it came to the PSI Corps on the series Babylon 5. Getting the chance to have a fifth and final season, he builds on an impending war between the PSI Corps and normal humans ("Mundanes") then never delivers. Fortunately, he has allowed J. Gregory Keyes to flesh out the background of the PSI Corps, starting from its chaotic inception. The novels are somewhat dark and brooding. The first novel, DARK GENESIS: THE BIRTH OF THE PSI CORPS ends with Bester's birth and deliverance to the corps (after the loss of his parents). While it is interesting, most of it is hack.
The trilogy really takes off with the second edition, DEADLY RELATIONS: BESTER ASCENDANT, delineating Bester's PSI Corps training and rise to the top of the PSI Cops regiment. It is full of delicious details and insights. Unfortunately, it ends just as Bester is planning on going to Babylon 5 to round up Jason Ironheart.
The third installment (FINAL RECKONING: THE FATE OF BESTER) picks up the tale of Bester well after the telepath war is over. He leaves the fate of Lyta Alexander to speculation and instead concentrates on Alfred Bester and Garibaldi's quest for revenge. Many of the details of this novel read like a poorly written Danielle Steele novel, but in the end Keyes delivers a fine resolution that actually ties his triology together quite well. I will not provide spoilers, but this novel is certainly a must for anyone interested in whatever happened to Mr. Garibaldi and Mr. Bester.
Entertaining Story.......2005-10-12
Dark Genesis follows the recognition of telepaths and the formation of the Psi Corps on Earth up to just past the birth of Alfred Bester. It portrayed well the sudden impact of a telepaths on human society, and the reaction to this impact that resulted in the Psi Corps creating a monster like Bester.
Babylon 5 backstory.......2005-08-01
I very much enjoyed the details that "filled out" the B5 universe. The questions of how and why things became their current form has always interested me. The fact that J. Michael Straczynski has shared his detailed outline with other writers is great. I would have given this book a 5 star rating on content and story but I took a point away because of some technical writing errors. Any fan of B5 would enjoy this book.
The Mother and Father of the Corps.......2003-08-14
This book, based on an outline from Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski (so you know it's official), covers the period in B5's history detailing the discovery of telepaths on Earth in 2115 and the early years of the Psi Corps.
I was stunned at the revelations in this book, including the appearance of the ancestors of several of B5's (in)famous telepath characters and briefly touches upon the first contact with the Centauri. But the thing that got me the most, and this is a small spoiler (but it's right at the start of the book), but the discovery of telepaths was the result of a joke. Yes, two medical students had to write and research a paper on the most outrageous topic they could think of as part of a hazing ritual, so they chose mind-reading. Imagine their surprise when they tested and found people who could actually do it.
Keep that in mind the next time you're watching Babylon 5 and it's an episode involving human telepaths. Sure, it would've been discovered sooner or later, but you have to appriciate the irony involved that the discovery of telepathic abilities, and all their subsequent problems, is the unintended side effect of a prank. Highly recommended.

Great stuff.......2005-09-07
The first book in the series could get a little boring for some readers as it deals solely with the background and history of the organization, the Psi Corps in Babylon 5. Other than that I'd say the series was a success!
The second book features Al Bester (the loved Psi Cop from the popular hit series, Babylon 5) starting off his adventures as a young boy instead of the policy enforcing, back stabbing villain in the Babylon 5 series. Keyes does a downright amazing job of fleshing out the character of Al Bester. The only complaint is that Keyes skips portions of Bester's life midway through the book... then again though, it doesn't matter since what he has to present is just as good (if not better than) Bester's childhood.
Rich with details and imagery one wouldn't expect from a book made from a television series, Bester's childhood story and background behind why he thinks the way he does as an adult is matched only by the beauty of the last and final book. Many reviewers have said that this was their least favorite book but in my opinion it was just as beautiful as the second (his childhood meets what he's become and the convictions he must live with surrounded by the beauty of Paris, nothing can beat that).
Anyhow, great series - I certainly hope more people post their previous reviews for the independent books here instead showing their support for a series well-done.

Book Description
These Parent-to-English guidebooks are hilarious primers on understanding the true meanings of parental communication. Those who suspect that their mothers and fathers took closely guarded secret courses instructing them on "the significance of enigmatic utterances" won't be surprised to learn there are indeed clandestine languages for parents. And here are the books that decipher them. Finally, Dad's ambiguous responses like "Go ask your mother," cryptic commands such as "Don't make me pull this car over," and the puzzling question, "Do you think I'm made of money?" are explained in comic detail in this handy reference. And Mom's warnings, "Don't you ever let me catch you doing that again!" (implying that you can do it, I just don't want to find out about it) and probes, "Is that what you're going to wear?" are made clear. (Translation of the last Momism: "I wouldn't be caught DEAD in that outfit.")

Book Description
Titanic scholars contend that the demise of "the unsinkable ship" left more behind than a memory of April 15, 1912, as an important point in history. Through books, films, stories, and songs, the archetypal shipwreck has endured as a metaphor for the perils of mankind's hubris and the fallibility of technology. In 1985, the discovery of the long-missing wreckage two miles below the surface of the Atlantic revitalized interest in the Titanic and spawned a new generation of books, films, and, for the first time, websites, and computer games. James Cameron's blockbuster Titanic became the biggest movie of all time and engendered still greater popular interest in the tragic event.
This bibliography is a survey of the immense volume of literary, dramatic, and commercial endeavors that came out of history's most compelling shipwreck. Organized by genre in accessible categories and short entries, the book includes Titanic-inspired documentaries, narrative films, children's books, histories, short stories, novels, plays, articles, essays, software, websites, poems, and songs. Each entry includes a brief review, bibliographic information, and the technical details of the specific source. The reviews include subjective analysis designed to reflect the usefulness of the source and to be of benefit to researchers and scholars. Five appendices include lists of the actors appearing in more than one Titanic film, brief film and television appearances of the Titanic, films never or not yet released, books that survived the wreck, and books written by passengers.
Customer Reviews:
Nice book - but too pricey for what you get!.......2005-04-22
I would have liked to rate this book far higher than three stars - but when comparing value to content - the book doesn't cut it. Softcover, OK paper and absolutely no illustrations, save the cover - it's simply not worth $35.00 ($37.49 with shipping and handling). Comparing it to Beveridge and Hall's book which was self-published - at $18.95 (on sale now for $16.95) the book seems even steeper in price.
The author says that the book "Art of Titanic" by Marschall is "pricey" - compared to the price of this book for what you get the Marschall book is a bargain!
The author did a great job of compiling all the sources, and it's a good source book for books, films and the like. I just have reservations concerning the price.

What finer medium for conveying culture than the alphabet? The dictionary form is especially apt for pop culture, which relies less on logical connection than random association (witness, for example, roller disco or rock opera). Thus, this volume shows us that Stephen King belongs right next to Martin Luther King. Once you see "superheroes" side by side with "surfing" you'll kick yourself for not having made the connection before. Every tiny article in this hefty hardcover is an invitation to further reading and cross-referencing, providing in capsule form the highlights of many histories. Each page is bordered with richly reproduced color photographs. Even the layout of these pictures provides added insight, as when a Ronald McDonald balloon from the Thanksgiving Day parade breaks the border of a reproduction of Norman Rockwell's "Turkey Day." This volume is an almost endless occasion for cultural cross-pollination.
Customer Reviews:
Treasure Trove.......2006-11-26
I love this book because it presents me with a better understanding and insight about the things I encounter in the American culture on a regular basis.
interesting but too light.......2001-01-12
As a newcomer to America there's lots of trivia I don't know about but am exposed to every day, so anything which lists the things Americans take for granted is useful. This book is amusing and a bit informative, though the subjects are in the main so well known that there's nothing new to be learned.
By its very nature this has to be a light book with brief one paragraph descriptions for most things, so sometimes an item which is worth more detail or possibly a book of its own is under represented.
All in all it's like reading the small filler articles in a magazine (it's published by Readers Digest), interesting to spend a couple of minutes dipping into but nothing you'd read from cover to cover or use as a reference book.

Steve Jackson Games comes through with another good one........2003-06-04
It's something of an open secret that many who buy supplements for the Generic Universal Roleplaying System (GURPS), don't actually play the game. GURPS is certainly a sprawling nightmare of overlapping, and even contradictory, rules, but it's products like BLOOD TYPES that demonstrate why gamers keep buying GURPS products: they're very, very useful.
Taking a step away from the roleplaying game that swallowed the vampiric subgenre whole (VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE), BLOOD TYPES aims to be the definitive resource concerning the bloodsucking creatures. As with the best of the GURPS sourcebooks, BLOOD TYPES answers every question one could think to ask about the given subject, presenting exhaustive research in one easy-to-digest package. Also as per usual, the rules included are a turgid mess, but that doesn't make BLOOD TYPES any less of an engaging read.
Author Lane Grate seems to realize what a drag the GURPS rules can be, and delays their inclusion until nearly fifty pages into the book. He begins instead with an overview of the symbolic meaning of the literary/folkloric/filmic vampire, and the segues directly into an examination of the development of the vampiric legend in various world cultures, not overlooking "human vampires" like Elizabeth Bathory. His treatment of the Victorian literary vampire is quite interesting, and will likely spur readers of BLOOD TYPES to break out their old copies of Bram Stoker's DRACULA.
Grate does his best to keep the rules portion of BLOOD TYPES as painless as possible. The remainder of the book is occupied with vampiric character types and how to build them. One method presented is to select one of the more than a dozen archetypical vampire types from around the world and use the package of advantages and disadvantages given for them. Another is the DIY approach, where Grate provides a toolkit of "typical" vampiric traits, thereby encouraging GMs to create unique vampire types for their games.
The only real disappointment in BLOOD TYPES comes from the Game Master section of the book. Whereas in many GURPS titles this is a beefy chunk of the text, in BLOOD TYPES it's somewhat slender. After the in-depth discussion of the topic that precedes it - scarcely a topic is left unaddressed in the character-type and historical sections, for example - the GMs' advice seems weak by comparison. In contrast to some of the better GURPS books, Grate doesn't provide extensive suggestions for building and/or maintaining a vampire-centric campaign, but simply hits the high points, addresses crossovers with other GURPS titles in sidebars, and leaves it at that.
Taken as whole, BLOOD TYPES is a worthwhile purchase and a surprisingly entertaining read. As usual, the rules sections aren't useful for anyone but GURPS gamers, but the wealth of background and detailed research on vampires cannot help but inspire and inform GMs looking to create a vampiric campaign, or to incorporate these classic horrors into their existing game. From the stunning Timothy Bradstreet cover to the last page, BLOOD TYPES is good stuff.
Probably better than Vampire the Masquerade.......1998-08-30
I am a fan of Vampire the Masquerade and the GURPS books. The background info in this single book is far more interesting and the Vampires more versatile than in V:tM. If you haven't read it, I'd suggest you at least pick it up and give it a try. Highly valuable for GURPS GM's.

Not a Reference.......2007-08-23
If you are an experienced coder looking for an strict HTML, XHTML, or CSS reference, I suggest you move on to another title. If you are a novice in HTML using a WYSIWYG editor and want to start getting into the HTML code itself, then this is a good book for you. I bought this book to refresh myself in HTML, and CSS being away from it for several years. I program in VB and VC++ and have many programming references that are excellent and very concise. Unfortunately this book is neither. The writers persistently wander off on long winded tangents that seem to ramble on and on.... and on! The analogies had me scratching my head wondering just what exactly the comparative
was? There are many small chapters in the last half of the book that are nothing but fluff and offer no real information.
In closing, there is useful information in this book for the novice. However it is not complete or in any particular order. Happy hunting.

This is a bible for beginners, written in clean and simple language. For me, it has been the ideal reference. For somebody just beginning in web design, I recommend pairing "Head First HTML..." with this book, as the "Head First" series takes more time teaching certain basic concepts.
It is both a reference and a chapter by chapter teaching guide. All in all, it has been very helpful.
DO NOT BUY!.......2006-07-22
This book is not worth your money. It is poorly written, does not explain code, and is very incomplete. Bible in its title is very misleading...
Perfect Textbook for Beginners.......2006-01-05
I have used this book as a textbook for an "Introduction to HTML" class I taught. I looked at several references prior to choosing on one, and this was by far the best formatted and most appropriate for those with little to no existing knowledge of HTML.
The previous reviewer's complaints are mostly unfounded, in my opinion. The appendix contains a more or less comprehensive listing of all HTML tags and their usage, etc. The chapters are well organized, easy to read, and comprehensive. If this book spreads itself a little thin at times trying to cover so much ground, it is necessary due to the inherently connected nature of HTML, XHTML, and CSS. Covering only HTML would not be useful for beginners who want to gain a basic understanding of these technologies. I assume the "HTML 4 Bible" by the same publisher is more what the previous reviewer was probably looking for.
I highly recomend this book to anyone wishing to learn HTML.
Disappointed.......2004-12-30
The title is misguiding. It's everything but an HTML, XHTML & CSS Bible. Title should read "Become a webmaster in a month". I expected to have:
- The full HTML Specification with an example for each definition
- Same for XHTML (DTD, rules to respect, validation, etc...)
- Same for CSS and *PLEASE*, at least the basics of tableless CSS layout
If the book were to expose the aforementioned information, it would exceed the 800 pages, and the author wouldn't have had to put some more information that is useful, I agree, but it's off-topic, sorry. The author should stress a lot more on standards. Standards are important, and one can't call a book a "Bible" if it only covers 75% of HTML, 50% of XHTML and hardly covers basics of CSS.
It lacks information on the PNG file format (open source). Mention of the Opera Browser is almost non-existent, even if it's the most standard-compliant browser. Using tables to create a layout is old-fashioned and many good books (by Dan Cederholm, Jeffrey Zeldman or Eric Meyer) proove that one should *NOT* use tables for layout so that structure and content are clearly seperated from presentation. Without this discipline, the web won't be able to evolve toward XML.
The book talks about image retouching, which again is off-topic, pretty much like SMIL, multimedia, FTP, maintainance, databases, weblogs, PHP & MySQL.
I noticed several errors, and then I stopped writing them down. These are some of them:
- p.93 PNG, is stored without being compressed doesn't loose color or image quality, and does support transparency. At least this can be achieved in Photoshop CS.
- p.108 I find it sad that the author doesn't show how image maps are done with circles and polygons
- chap.9 "Special characters" should show a sample for every single entity
- p.184 The author puts the e-mail address into the code. How is it possible?! With all the spam problems people keep complaining, how come the author doesn't display the e-mail address thanks to a javascript to hide it from spambots?
- p.188 in Part III instead of in Part II
- p.210 He forgot that the label tag can nest the radio button and the text without ID.
- p.284 div.div1 table should read div.div1>table
- All examples are shown in IE or Netscape 4. Why not show modern browsers (Opera 7.8, Mozilla 1.8, Firefox 1.0)
- p.379 user agent is not Opera but Firebird
This is not a bad book, it has a lot of useful information, but what drove me nuts is that I wanted a "Bible" for these 3 languages. I had to buy other books. I hope now people who buy this book know it's a general-purpose book on web design.

Customer Reviews:
Inaccurate content.......2007-09-17
I purchased this book to assist me in the switch from GoLive to Dreamweaver CS3. While the book contains a lot of information, much of what it contains is inaccurate. I have now come across several occurances where the book is explaining a technique, and the menu items that you are told to select are either completely mislabeled, or just not contained in the menu at all. I have found myself using the applications built-in help more than this book. Unfortunately the quantity of words is not a substitute for quality.
Very informative and helpful.......2007-08-23
As a newbee in designing web sites with Dreamweaver I purchased quite a few books on how to get the best out Dreamweaver. This is by far the best. For any problem that accured, it was a great referance. If you are already building your sites in dreamweaver you can skip the first 2 or 300 pages, which still leaves you with hundreds of pages. Like all the "bibles" its over 1000 pages and even the CD is working (in a lot of "bibles" the cd is unusable). Until now I found the solution for every unclear Dreamweaver behavior in the book. It has a lot more information than I propaby ever need, but still, it ist good having it.
All you need to master DW CS3.......2007-06-27
This book does what no other book can do; teach you everything you need to know about DW CS3 and how to utilize all of its significant features. Want to learn how to master the css panel to streamline your css processing without having to stare at code all day? check. Want to learn how to incorporate complex javascript behaviors without having to learn how to handcode js? check. Want to learn how to incorporate the holy grain of future web applications, ajax, with simplicity and ease? check.
If you're going to spend money on resources this book is a must have. It's easy to understand, well-laid out, and an easy reference guide. This book is so good and so much in line with dw cs3 that adobe should make it part of their cs package! A must have, no question about it.
My Idea generator........2007-06-27
Not only is this a fantastic reference, it also serves as my idea generator.
I use the book to refine techniques as well as get new ideas on how to better the content I've already created. I'm old fashioned enough to need a manual in my hand while creating with Dreamweaver. The book helps me get the most out of the software.
