Corridor Ecology.......2006-07-16
I highly recommend Corridor Ecology for anyone who is interested in corridors, land fragmentation, and species conservation. It is the most comprehensive literature I have come across in terms of the role of corridors, corridor design and implementation. As a current graduate student working on a corridor project, this book has been incredibly helpful in planning my field work in ground truthing Least-Cost path corridors. Especially the chapter, Corridor Quality: Continuity, Composition, and Dimension. It has really helped me understand better how to evaluate potential corridors. My advisor has been so impressed with the book that she is going to order some for the library and a biodiversity center that is being set up at campus. I also feel that this would be an excellent text for conservation courses as it covers issues such as metapopulation theory, edge effects and focal species considerations. The book also covers issues and potential problems that need to be dealt with when designing a corridor, which is very valuable. I also think this would be a excellent source for land management agencies and the Department of Transportation to utilize. The authors do an excellent job in bringing together all aspect of corridor ecology by utilizing the most current literature, valuable study cases along with their incredible field and research experience.

Book Description
Combining the methods of the modern philosopher with those of the historian of ideas, Knud Haakonssen presents an interpretation of the philosophy of law which Adam Smith developed out of -- and partly in response to -- David Hume's theory of justice. While acknowledging that the influences on Smith were many and various, Dr Haakonssen suggests that the decisive philosophical one was Hume's analysis of justice in A Treatise of Human Nature and the second Enquiry. He therefore begins with a thorough investigation of Hume, from which he goes on to show the philosophical originality of Smith's new form of natural jurisprudence. At the same time, he provides an over-all reading of Smith's social and political thought, demonstrating clearly the exact links between the moral theory of The Theory of Moral Sentiments, the Lectures on Jurisprudence, and the socio-historical theory of The Wealth of Nations.
This is the first full analysis of Adam Smith's jurisprudence; it emphasizes its normative and critical function, and relates this to the psychological, sociological, and historical aspects which hitherto have attracted most attention. Dr Haakonssen is critical of both purely descriptivist and utilitarian interpretations of Smith's moral and political philosophy, and demonstrates the implausibility of regarding Smith's view of history as pseudo-economic or 'materialist'. By drawing on all of Smith's works, he shows that the framework for Smith's discussion is an interesting theory of human knowledge which leads to an original philosophy of history.
The book will interest scholars and students of moral, political, and legal philosophy, and their histories, eighteenth-century history, andthe history of ideas.

Book Description
Studies of global climate change predict that increases in atmospheric CO2 concentration and temperature are expected to occur over the next century. To help gain an insight into the potential effect of these changes on forests, this book describes how major European tree species respond to experimentally manipulated environmental conditions. The contributors describe the effects on photosynthesis, respiration, and development and use the results to generate models of the likely response of European forests to the predicted changes in climate. The volume encompasses studies carried out under the ECOCRAFT (European Collaboration on CO2 Responses Applied to Forests and Trees) program, focusing on the major tree species found in eight European countries. As such, it provides an authoritative report of the current status of European research into this important area of global environmental biology.

Book Description
Chemists in research and development laboratories have relatively few published resources on the design and analysis of experiments. In recent years massive changes have occurred in the tools and instrumentation at their disposal, in the scale of databases linking the properties of pure materials, solutions or other mixtures to molecular structure, and in the sheer ability to collect data through automated data acquisition systems. Despite these advances, many chemists still apply only rudimentary data analysis techniques and remain unaware of the advances made in information extraction over the last decade. Design and Analysis in Chemical Research provides the means to overcome that problem. An international panel of contributors address the principles of design and analysis in chemical research and development, with a thoughtful, user-friendly approach. Organized in chapters dealing with major activities, this volume generates understanding through numerous examples and practical applications drawn from research and development chemistry. The authors concentrate on principles and interpretation rather than formal derivation and proof, and adopt the unifying theme that statistics and chemometrics are essentially extensions of the logical processes used every day by chemists. Thus, they allow a greater understanding of problems more quickly and easily than purely intuitive methods.

Book Description
Now available is the second edition of a book which has been described as "...an exceptionally lucid, easy-to-read presentation... would be an excellent addition to the collection of every analytical chemist. I recommend it with great enthusiasm." (Analytical Chemistry)
N.R. Draper reviewed the first edition in Publication of the International Statistical Institute "...discussion is careful, sensible, amicable, and modern and can be recommended for the intended readership."
The scope of the first edition has been revised, enlarged and expanded. Approximately 30% of the text is new. The book first introduces the reader to the fundamentals of experimental design. Systems theory, response surface concepts, and basic statistics serve as a basis for the further development of matrix least squares and hypothesis testing. The effects of different experimental designs and different models on the variance-covariance matrix and on the analysis of variance (ANOVA) are extensively discussed. Applications and advanced topics (such as confidence bands, rotatability, and confounding) complete the text. Numerous worked examples are presented.
The clear and practical approach adopted by the authors makes the book applicable to a wide audience. It will appeal particularly to those with a practical need (scientists, engineers, managers, research workers) who have completed their formal education but who still need to know efficient ways of carrying out experiments. It will also be an ideal text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students following courses in chemometrics, data acquisition and treatment, and design of experiments.

Description:
Simultaneous optimization of separation quality and analysis time of the micellar liquid chromatography of nine chlorophenol isomers was investigated. The effect on retention of three experimental parameters was studied using multivariate analysis. The factors studied were the concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate, propanol content and pH of the mobile phase. The experiments were performed according to the face-centred cube central composite design and the inverse form of the experimental retention times for analytes were fitted to the polynomial models. The results of the analysis of variance showed that the models obtained explain greater than 99% of the variance observed in the chromatograms. Good predictive ability of the models was verified as high values of the statistics R^2 and F were obtained for the linear relationship between predicted cross-validated and experimental values of the dependent variable. The study showed that the use of Pareto-optimality method, an approach from multi-criteria decision-making, allows the selection of the best possible combinations of separation and analysis time in micellar liquid chromatography of chlorophenols.

Description:
Systematic errors observed when using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) and electrothermal atomic spectrometry (ETAAS) for the analysis of biological solid materials (seafood products) were evaluated. The effect of the sample pre-treatment method (microwave-assisted acid digestion, ultrasound-assisted acid leaching and slurry sampling) as well as the number of times that a certain pre-treatment process is repeated, were two factors evaluated. They give information about the effect of the sample pre-treatment on the uncertainty in the analysis. In addition, the number of measurements (i.e., number of times that an acid digest, an acid leachate or aqueous slurry are analysed) and the calibration technique used (aqueous calibration method or standard addition technique) were other two variables taken into account. This last factor gives information about the effect of the calibration on the results, while the replicate measurements showed the repeatability. A fifth variable named as sample matrix tests the influence of the matrix sample on the systematic error through the use of different reference materials. This variable allows the study of the effect of the trace element concentrations on the uncertainty because the trace elements contents are different in each reference material. Experimental design and principal component analysis approaches were used as chemometric tools. It has been found that the use of the slurry sampling technique in ETAAS and FAAS and the determination of high element concentrations by ETAAS have led to poor precision.

Book Description

Description:
Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled to gas chromatography (GC) was applied to the extraction of phenol and some of its volatile derivatives in water samples. The SPME fiber consisted of a thin layer of polyaniline, which was electrochemically coated on a fine Pt wire. The stability of the coating was such that it could be used at temperatures as high as 325^oC, without any deterioration. The effects of various parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were studied, simultaneously. From these, optimization of the extraction temperature, extraction time, coating thickness, sample pH, salt concentration and desorption time was carried out by means of a (2^6^-^2) fractional factorial design. It was found that the effects and interactions of five out of six factors were significant. However, the coating thickness showed a large main effect but an insignificant interaction effect, so it was kept constant. Also, the effect of desorption time was insignificant if sufficient time was allowed for desorption to take place. Therefore, a central composite design (CCD) with four remaining factors, i.e., sample pH, salt concentration, extraction time and sample temperature was performed and a response surface equation was derived. The statistical parameters of the derived model were r=0.97 and F=25.3. The optimum conditions were obtained using a grid method. Using the optimum conditions, the method was analytically evaluated. The detection limit, relative standard deviation, linear range and recovery were 1.3-12.8ngmL^-^1, 2.2-5.3%, 0.01-5.0@mgmL^-^1, and 88-103%, respectively. The results showed the suitability of polyaniline-coated fiber in analyzing volatile phenolic compounds in water samples.

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Analytica Chimica Acta, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
The chemometrics approach was applied for the optimization of separation of anticonvulsant agents in mixed micellar liquid chromatography (MLC). To optimize the separation of eight anticonvulsant agents, the effect of six experimental parameters on retention was investigated by means of multivariate analysis. The factors considered were the organic modifier concentration in the mobile phase, the length of the alkyl chain of the organic modifier, the concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and Brij-35, pH of the mobile phase, and temperature. The experiments were performed according to a face centered cube response surface experimental design. Then, in order to optimize the separation, Pareto-optimality method was employed. The obtained regression models were characterized by both descriptive and predictive ability (R^2>=97.8% and R"c"v^2>=93.7%) and allowed the chromatographic separation of the anticonvulsant drugs with a good resolution and a total analysis time within 50min.

Struggle to define and understand fundamental concepts.......1998-05-22
This book shows just how tortuous has been the struggle in physics (and science in general) to arrive at and comprehend its fundamental concepts. The very first paragraph in Einstein's foreword is worth the price of the entire book, if one truly understands what Einstein has said. Most of us came into physics via ordinary textbook courses, where unfortunately most of the approach was to quickly master the equations and their methods of application. Somehow we never understood that the very foundations of physics are still very much at issue, and our teachers either did not realize this themselves, or considered such musings trivial, or were just too busy to enlighten us. Most of us think that things like space, mass, time, charge, field, potential, zero, and unity are obvious, and it can come as a major shock to one's system to find out that they are not. Most such fundamental concepts still do not have a satisfactory definition. Jammer's book, while cumbersome by its very scholarship, does give one a grasp of just how difficult the foundations problems -- such as the nature of space -- really are. If one is seriously interested in this sort of "deep" problem, then one must discover the literature oneself. Jammer's book is a must. I gave the book a 9 instead of a 10 because of its overall ponderous nature, but highly recommend it to anyone who is deeply interested in the foundations concepts of physics, how we got where we are, what we did along the way, what we may have yet missed, and just how firm or shaky are our concepts today. We also recommend Jammer's other studies of the concept of force and the concept of mass.
An encompasing, albeit overtly scholarly, look at "Space"........1997-10-13
A very deep book, filled with excerpts in native languages from ancient Greek to modern German, French, and Russian, and with tensor mathematics and other such nonsense. If you want to have your concept of space and time ripped out from under you and your horizons dramatically broadened, check this one out!
(BTW, I gave this a 9 instead of a 10 solely because of the weightiness of the material.)

A book that's worth more than what is costs........2005-02-27
Operette Moralli is quite humorous some times. A more accurate translation of the title would be "small ethical works," but the current title is more truthful to the actual content. Giacomo Leopardi's work deals with subjects like suicide, egoism of men, the role hope plays in out lives, the genius's fate, similarities between fashion and death (I was as surprised as you are but he's actually right!), pleasure, happiness, poetry, philosophy, death, love, etc.
I think his humorous dialogues show much more invention and wit than other, more serious, essays. Although seriousness pervades every work it's not always visible. The hopelessness and pessimism that runs through most of the Operette Moralli may not suit the style of most people. But hopelessness here is the result of strength, and it's done with no hatred. Some of his opinions are surprisingly contemporary.
There are better books out there in my opinion, but this is still a very good book, and as Leopardi himself notes: "... books now are mostly written in less time than one needs to read them, and you see very well that since they cost what they are worth, they also last in proportion to what they cost."
An Essential Masterpiece of Western Literature.......2002-08-21
Leopardi is the greatest Italian poet since Dante and Petrarch.
He should be just as famous, however, for this prose work, which is a collection of short essays and philosophical dialogues.
Cecchetti is an eminently qualified translator, and this California Press paperback gives you a marvelous opportunity to revel in what is indisputably a neglected (in English, at least)
Major Work.
If you like Beckett, or especially the philosophy of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, or even Kafka and Borges, you will also find reading Leopardi a superb, rewarding experience!
