Why Free Trade Needs Fair Trade.......2000-01-14
Mastel crafts a carefully researched look at one of the most controversial issues in international trade: antidumping (AD) laws. After presenting a well-documented history of AD laws in the U.S., he invokes economic analysis to obliterate the arguments against fair trade.
I think Mastel could have added significantly to his book by a more in-depth treatment of AD laws' less publicized cousin, countervailing duty (CVD) laws. He mentions CVD laws briefly in his section on subsidies, but the purpose of this section is mainly to illustrate another possible cause of dumping. Perhaps he should write a separate book on subsidies and countervailing measures....
Also, I would have liked a more in-depth discussion of foreign AD/CVD laws. Mastel relegates his discussion of these to an appendix, which may be appropriate considering the scope of his book. Again, maybe a separate book is needed....
Mastel could have added to his book considerably if he had included more of the mathematical computations behind AD margins (perhaps in an appendix). Admittedly, though, this would have hampered the accessibility of the book to non-professionals.
Overall, his work is very accessible to any interested reader, and I recommend it especially to students and legal or research assistants embarking on a possible career in international trade.

Book Description
A group of major thinkers addresses fundamental questions of intellectual freedom both within and without the academy. The essays in this volume were originally given as lectures in a series established in 1991 to honor three University of Michigan faculty members who, in 1954, refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee and were thereafter suspended or dismissed by the University. The authors reflect on the questions and challenges to academic freedom that the predicament of those three scholars put into such sharp focus.
This readable, yet profound, work brings together the thoughts of Robert M. O'Neil and Lee C. Bollinger on "The Open-Minded Soldier and the University," Catherine Stimpson on "Dirty Minds, Dirty Bodies, and Clean Speech," Walter Metzger on "A Stroll along the New Frontiers of Academic Freedom," Linda Ray Pratt on "Academic Freedom and the Merits of Uncertainty," Roger Wilkins on "Opportunity and Academic Integrity," Eugene L. Roberts, Jr. on "Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society," and David A. Hollinger on "Money and Academic Freedom a Half-Century after McCarthyism." Avern Cohn brings a different perspective to bear with his thoughts on academic freedom from a trial judge's point of view.
This is a book of interest to all concerned with the fundamental issues of intellectual freedom and the right to hold nonconforming views.
Peggie J. Hollingsworth is Assistant Research Scientist, Environmental-Industrial Health Department, School of Public Health, University of Michigan.

This book is dated now in its techniques and doesn't contain the newer methods, but it still has very valuable basic information that makes it a good addition to anyone's library.

Book Description
The Oxford Handbook of Nucleic Acid Structure is a comprehensive reference text on all aspects of nucleic acid sturcture. Particular emphasis is placed on the results from X-ray crystallography and NMR studies, with both methods being given equal weight. The nineteen chapters describe in detail the variety of DNA and RNA structural types discovered to date with all the major 'native' structures being represented. The text progresses systematically through the polymorphs of double helical DNA through to the higher-order organizations of triplexes, quadruplexes, and junctions, then to RNA structures in their various degrees of complexity. Each chapter has been written by authorities in the field who have worked together to provide this comprehensive text on nucleic acid structure. The whole project has been brought together and edited by Professor Stephen Neidle who is Director of the CRC Biomolecular Structure Unit at the Institute of Cancer Research.
Customer Reviews:
Best introduction to nucleic acid structure.......2001-10-24
This is the best introduction to nucleic acid structure available. Chapters are reviews contributed by the leading scientists of that field such as Struther Arnott, Richard Dickerson, and Alexander Rich. Coverage is broad and deep. Topics include both experimental and computational studies and unusual structures. Some topics that were not covered or only covered superficially include larger structures (nucleosome, ribosome, etc.), quantum mechanical studies, all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, electrostatic interactions and solvation, protein-nucleic acid structure, spectroscopic approaches besides NMR, and ironically, drug-DNA structures, the specialty of the editor, Neidle. Extensive references in each chapter are invaluable.
It's too bad the book is so expensive. I hope OUP releases a paperback edition.

Book Description
SIX IDEAS THAT SHAPED PHYSICS is the 21st century's alternative to traditional, encyclopedic textbooks. Thomas Moore designed SIX IDEAS to teach students: --to apply basic physical principles to realistic situations --to solve realistic problems --to resolve contradictions between their preconceptions and the laws of physics --to organize the ideas of physics into an integrated hierarchy
Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2006-10-29
Man! I've used a lot of undergraduate textbooks to review things for my graduate study in physics. There are areas in Quantum that I have never properly understood, because other books either hopelessly flub the descriptions, or the grad books are too advanced, and only good for doing the difficult stuff of graduate physics.
But this Moore fellow is something else! He understands, he explains, entertains, and amazingly, this is the first physics book that easily holds the attention of my ADD brain! I'm learning things from his book that I've never properly understood. I want to get the whole set now.

Book Description
If there has ever been a groundbreaking edition that likewise returns the reader to the original Shakespeare text, it will be THE APPLAUSE FOLIO TEXTS. If there has ever been an accessible version of the Folio, it is this edition, set for the first time in modern fonts. The Folio is the source of all other editions. The Folio text forces us to re-examine the assumptions and prejudices which have encumbered over four hundred years of scholarship and performance. Notes refer the reader to subsequent editorial interventions, and offer the reader a multiplicity of interpretations. Notes also advise the reader on variations between Folios and Quartos. Prepared and annotated by Neil Freeman, Head, Graduate Directing Program, University of British Columbia.
