Book Description
World hunger, jobs, the overall economic prospects of developing and developed countries alike are all being influenced by the international negotiations about trade, agriculture, services, investment and intellectual property rights going on at the World Trade Organization (WTO). Based on interviews with the participants, this remarkable book lifts the shroud of secrecy surrounding these ostensibly democratic negotiations.
What emerges is a disturbing account entirely at odds with the official picture of a rules-based consensus emerging out of multilateral trade discussions in which all WTO member countries are equal participants. In reality:
· Closed doors rather than open access and public information is the preferred mode of negotiation;
· Decisions are often being made without the full approval of developing countries;
· The tiny delegations of the poorest and smallest countries have only a limited capacity to calculate in advance the implications of what they are being asked to sign up to;
· More seriously still, there are instances of illegitimate pressures and inducements being offered by the US and EU delegations - including threats to report non-compliant Third World delegates to their superiors, and hints that aid to countries refusing to kow-tow may be withheld.
The revelations contained in this book are of enormous importance to all those concerned that international institutions should be more transparent and democratic, and that the rules being developed for the world economy should primarily be geared to solving the pressing humanitarian problems of poverty, hunger, jobs and improvements in the standards of living of all those being left behind by the process of globalization.

Town Hall Edition with Questions for Group Discussion and greatly expanded index for instant facts regarding all sex offender cases.
A recovering sex offender with 14 years back in the community, trouble-free, answers the questions everyone wants to ask. Among them:
· What makes a person become a sex offender?
· How do they select their victims?
· What can be done to prevent repeat sex offenders?
· What should you do if a registered sex offender is living next door to you?
Forty ways are given to protect children from rapists, child molesters, child prostitution, and by those normally never suspected: in the schools, churches and elsewhere. The author's `Ten Commandments for the Recovering Sex Offender' tells them what they must do to earn their way back into the community.
How sex offenders can be controlled on the neighborhood level by using a plan for national healing that has already proven itself. How the sex offender can learn to control himself.
Readers Resources section provides a listing of useful additional books, websites, referral organizations, and self-recovery groups around the world. Detailed index provides quick reference to every topic covered.
The author was the first convicted sex offender in the United Sates to publicly champion Megan's Law, requiring the registration of sex offenders across the country and disclosure of their identities to the public. He now conducts a prison outreach project, encouraging incarcerated sex offenders in prisons across the country to recover, helps victims to heal further and appears as a speaker before the media and child advocacy workers, therapy groups and community corrections organizations. His website explaining Megan's Law to other offenders may be found at www.calsexoffenders.net

Book Description
Microbes as Tools for Cell Biology bridges the gap between cell biology and microbiology. This laboratory guide provides a microbial tool kit for biologists who wish to use microbes as probes for basic cellular functions. The volume is organized into three sections, covering essential information on culture and genetic manipulation of microbes, assays for pathogen-host recognition, and analysis of intracellular parasitism. Each chapter outlines practical procedures and describes the rationale behind their development. This volume should prove useful to anyone interested in the biology of infectious agents, or their exploitation as a new generation of cell biological reagents.
Key Features
* Introduction by renowned microbiologist Dr. Stanley Falkow
* Covers manipulation of pathogens, especially generation and selection of non-virulent phenotypes
* Guides researchers in the study of intracellular pathogenesis
* Describes microbial adherence and phagocytosis assays
* Focuses on protein trafficking in infected cells
* Well-illustrated with color plates, halftones, and diagrams

Description:
The Raman and mass spectra of 1,4-diphenylbuta-1,3-diene and several of its monomethyl and dimethyl homologues are reported and discussed, with a view to developing a spectroscopic protocol for detecting the presence and position of a methyl group in these compounds. Raman spectroscopy and mass spectrometry are shown to provide complementary information, by which the four available monomethyl homologues may be readily distinguished from each other and 1,4-diphenylbuta-1,3-diene itself. The utility of these 1,4-diarylbutadienes as model compounds for carotenoids and related materials, which may serve as indicators of extinct or extant extraterrestrial life, is considered.

Book Description
Clear, accessible guide requires little prior knowledge and considers just two topics: paraxial imaging and polarization. Lucid discussions of paraxial imaging properties of a centered optical system, optical resonators and laser beam propagation, matrices in polarization optics and propagation of light through crystals, much more. 60 illustrations. Appendixes. Bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
Enough.......2007-07-05
Had just about the information a needed. It could have a little bit more examples for a more clear approach. It was pretty useful.
Great if you are more interested in the math than the physics of optics.......2006-07-24
I really liked this book, but then my needs are probably different from the other two reviewers. I was looking for a book that concentrated on the mathematics of optics. Specifically I needed something that would show, given point A and a particular optical system, where would the translated version point B occur, and how could I express this in simple mathematical terms. My need was having a good book on the mathematics of optics without the need to wade through the details of the EM theory of Hecht, which if you are into pure optics, is an essential book. However, I am a computer scientist writing code to simulate optical effects rather than a physicist.
If you are interested in the mathematics of light, I can't think of a better reference. It even begins with a review of matrix algebra in case you are a bit rusty on the subject. It then applies matrix methods to paraxial rays through a cascade of lenses using the Jones transfer matrix approach. The book then covers optical resonators for lasers with Gaussian beams, followed by a chapter on polarization effects using the Muller matrix approach. If you don't already know the background material, chapter four on the polarization of light and the Stokes equations can be rough going. The Jones and Muller matrix calculations are derived in the appendix. The math in this book is well presented, but there is little indication of where you are going with this material in the grand scheme of things.
Pretty boring and disorganized.......2001-02-21
If you are already involved in optical computations, but have forgotten some fundamental tricks, this book is for you. As a trainer or reference it is difficult and obtuse. It is a string of mathematical methods linked together by math relationships rather than application to optic relationships. It was not of much help.
However, it is very inexpensive in the paperback form. You get what you pay for I guess.
A Bit Antique, But An Excellent Orientation.......2000-08-26
This book is very inexpensive (thanks again, Dover), and talks about all sorts of matrix methods in optics: ABCD matrices for paraxial ray tracing, Jones matrices, coherency matrices, and Stokes parameters for polarization, among other things.
It's not a terribly deep book, but it is readable, lucid, and complete. It got me up to speed rapidly on an area I was fuzzy in, so for [...] it's a great bargain.
Book Description
Frank Fenwick, the vicar of the title and a likeable and energetic clergyman, sets out to prove a young man's innocence in a murder and to prevent the eviction of a prostitute from her home. Choosing a prostitute as a central female character, Trollope addresses a topical question of his
time: how women should maintain due and proper regard for themselves without adopting either the manners of a prostitute or the political excesses of a feminist.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful, realistic, a pleasure to read.......2005-08-30
Other reviewers have discussed the plot and the characters of this wonderful mid-Victorian novel; I would rather speculate about what makes the author so much a favorite of mine. Trollope led a jumbling life, traveling constantly during his career as a postal inspector in Ireland, and throughout the world thereafter. He started life as a poor boy suffering hazing at a rich boy's school, was defeated later in a run for Parliament, and ended up a loud, red-faced, hale fellow at clubs. But something developed in his character that gave him remarkable insight into both the upper and lower class mental sets of the English mind of that period. The result is that he can marvelously reproduce both the speech and the thought patterns of his men and women characters as they wrestle with problems they encounter in everyday ethical situations, both ordinary and extraordinary. Thus, we are presented with the dilemmas of a puzzled betrothed young woman, a "fallen" woman, a youth suspected of murder, an old man torn by grief, a man in the throes of unrequited love, and a fight between a country parson and a lord. Everything is explained and I found myself murmuring, "Of course. They would think that, say that, do that." Unlike Dickens, he doesn't deal in grotesques. Unlike Thackeray, he doesn't mock his creations. The novel is therefore a perfect example of the Realist school of fiction writing as well as a fine read. It doesn't cut as deeply as "The Way We Live Now," which could be a treatise on the "greed is good" generations of our recent past, nor does it have the spellbinding comedy-tragedy of the Barsetshire series, nor the political intricacies of the Palliser Series of his novels, but Trollope doesn't disappoint the attentive reader who will suspend "presentism" type judgments about the role of women or the church in the 19th century or the fact that defendants in a criminal trial could not testify. That was then. He still speaks to us now, and speaks quite clearly.
Excellent.......2003-09-22
The title of the book might lead you to refrain, since it implies that the story is about a country vicar. One wonders how exciting that might be? However, this book is probably one of Trollope's most suspenseful and well-rounded novels. You have a romance, an unrequited romance, and a young woman at the heart of it whose lack of fortune could lead her astray. Mary Lowther, visiting the vicar and her friend, his wife, receives a marriage proposal from Harry Gilmore, the local squire, who at the encouragement of the vicar, has fallen desperately in love with Mary. Mary has offered no encouragement, and despite the pressure of the vicar and his wife to accept the marriage offer, refuses. Once at home, she falls in love with a visiting relation, but because he is penniless, cannot marry him. Thus she is tossed about on the tides of marital opportunities, continually pressured by friends and family to turn to Harry Gilmore. This portion of the story is rather like a "one woman stands against the world" scene, and it is intriguing, frustrating, and ultimately inspiring as Mary finds her strength not just in love but in herself. If romance doesn't interest you, Trollope has thrown in a second storyline, one unusual in his books. A murder occurs, and the vicar sets about attempting to solve it because the suspect -- even he suspects him -- is a young man from his neighborhood who has been skirting the law and morality for some time. Add to that, we have the character of the beautiful Carry Brattle, seduced by a man outside of wedlock and then tossed out of her home by her insulted father, forced to turn to prostitution in order to eat and find shelter. Her trials and her reform, including her family's eventual forgiveness of her sins, is at once indicative of the harsh lives imposed upon women in Trollope's era and a hope for a future where women are not viewed as the property of men but as persons in their own right. Finally, the vicar does have his own story as he insults a nobleman in his parish and is thereby made an enemy, the nobleman going so far as to build a new church right up against the vicar's property as an insult to the vicar's faith and effectiveness as a man of religion. How this resolves itself is a lark! The story is exciting, and each storyline is so well intertwined that the switch from one to the other as the book progresses is smooth. Never a dull moment in this one, you'll find that from the first page, you cannot put the book down.
