    Book Description

In just a few years, the Internet has had a visible impact on the daily lives of many Americans. But the recent demise of many of the "dot coms" that symbolized the Internet revolution has raised warning flags about its future.

Until now, discussion of the impact of the Internet on the economy has been mostly speculation. In Beyond the Dot.coms, two of the nation's most respected economists articulate the anticipated economic impact of the Internet over the next five years. Drawing from detailed research conducted by the Brookings Task Force on the Internet and the Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy (BRIE) Internet Task Force (see page 10), Robert Litan and Alice Rivlin address the Internet's potential impacts on productivity, prices, and market structure.

The research suggests that the most significant economic impact of the Internet will be its potential to increase productivity growth in the existing economy-with cheaper transactions, greater management efficiency, increased competition and broadened markets, more effective marketing and pricing, and increased consumer choice, convenience, and satisfaction. The greatest impact may not be felt in e-commerce, but rather in a wide range of "old economy" arenas, including health care and government.

5 out of 5 stars This book fills a great need for Catholic ministers........1998-10-14

Sister Mary Angela Shaughnessy's newest book is a great contribution to pastoral ministry. The format is very "user-friendly", beginning with a brief self-test to explore the reader's level of current awareness of legal issues involved in ministry. The subsequent chapters deal with the sources of law impacting ministry, types of lawsuits, personnel issues, and a final chapter devoted to special topics of concern. A brief glossary of terms is also provided.

The text is well laid out and easy to read. An index would have been useful, but since the book is quite brief, the lack of an index is not a major problem. Probably the best aspect of the book, in my opinion, is its explanation of the relationship between the legal aspects of ministry and the social justice teaching of the Church. For example, while some ministers may resent the administrative burden caused by current employment practices, the author points out that it is through these very practices that the social teaching of the church is concretized in the local church.

This book is useful for everyone involved in ministry, from pastors to volunteer teachers, from school principals to parish council presidents.

                Book Description

Recent changes in the Conservation Compliance Plans for farmers shows the need for improved information on the effective management of crop residues. Residue management requires an understanding of the crop, soil, and climate in which the farming system is located. In this volume, the strategies for effective residue management are described for each region of the country to provide a comparison of the regional differences. The chapters not only describe the knowledge in each region but also suggest some of the needed areas of research required to develop an improved understanding of the processes involved in effective residue management.

                  Book Description

Many agriculturalists, conservationists, and environmentalists are stressing the importance of sustaining soil productivity so that future generations will have adequate productive land on which to produce food. One significant factor affecting soil productivity is the retention of crop residues on the surface of the soil to help control soil erosion. This book provides a review of the vast amount of literature on the subject, condensing the findings in a comprehensive, easy-to-understand manner. It focuses on topics such as erosion control, crop production in systems involving surface residues, residue use for fuel and animal feed, plant pathogens, insects, soil properties, and the economics of conservation tillage.

                    Description:
Use of legume cover crops to improve soil productivity has had unexpected effects on cropping system components in a maize (Zea mays L.) and bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cropping system in Trans Nzoia district, Kenya. Smallholder farmers who recently adopted relay cropping of lablab (Lablab purpureus L.) observed a decline in bean yields where lablab residues had been incorporated prior to maize and bean planting. We investigated chafer grub (Schizonycha spp.) damage to beans and studied the impact of lablab and maize stover residue management strategy, planting time, and bean cultivar selection on seedling damage. Seedling assays (germination to flower initiation), involving four different bean varieties (GLP2, KK15, KK22, and KTL3), were carried out in three consecutive planting periods. The assays were superimposed on a long-term, factorial experiment where soils had been subjected to differential lablab and maize stover residue management strategies for 7 years. Factors were (1) lablab residues removed (L0) or retained (L1); (2) maize stover removed (S0) or retained (S1) and (3) residues left on the soil surface (I0) or incorporated (I1). Planting time significantly affected the degree of chafer grub damage, with later planted beans sustaining substantially more damage. Of the four bean varieties, KK15 and GLP2 were more grub tolerant than KK22 and KTL3. Grub damage was most severe in plots where lablab residues had been retained and maize stovers had been removed (L1S0). This factor combination had the highest seedling mortality, the poorest stand establishment, and the largest proportion of plants with severed roots systems. The results of this study show that the current farmer practice (lablab residue retention and maize stover removal) is conducive to increased grub-induced bean seedling damage and suggest that early planting, retention of maize stover, and selection of grub-tolerant varieties are important management strategies to reduce damage and subsequent productivity decline.

                            Book Description

The Second Edition is an updated revision to the authors highly successful and widely used introduction to the principles and application of the statistical theory of signal detection. This book emphasizes those theories that have been found to be particularly useful in practice including principles applied to detection problems encountered in digital communications, radar, and sonar.

Detection processing based upon the fast Fourier transform

5 out of 5 stars The Book on Advanced Detection Theory.......2003-09-24

As far as I am concerned this is simply the best book for advanced detection theory. Notice the word "advanced", this book is not for the beginner. It is an updated version of Whalen's first edition, which I have kept close at hand for most of my career. Whereas most texts available are weak on the statistical analysis of signals, this book is strong. I would be surprised if anyone who considered himself an expert on detection theory did not have a copy. If it has a weakness it is in showing the direct connections to applications.

5 out of 5 stars An Advanced Book on Detection Theory.......2003-03-26

This is perhaps the best book available for advanced detection theory. The probabalistic underpinnings are discussed at length. A lot of the other reviews complain about the mathematical difficulty of this text; however, it is an advanced text. Not all texts are required to be accessible to beginners in the subject. If you want to become an expert in detection theory, this is the next step after your introductory course(s). To really get there, you need to have experience in the applications as well.

If you don't have some background in detection theory or at least hypothesis testing, then in my estimation this is probably not the book for you. On the other hand if the myriad texts available are beginning to appear to be a little bit weak on the probability/statistics analysis of signals, then this is the book for you.

1 out of 5 stars Worst textbook I ever had.......2002-01-03

This book manages to describe even straight-forward concepts in a way that is simply incomprehensible. If you are learning the material, you often have to read a paragraph many times to make any sense out of it. And let's not blame it on the concepts, what it comes down to is confusing presentation and terrible use of English language.
I can't believe it has second edition.

1 out of 5 stars Good for reference, not for learning.......2000-10-13

This book is adequate for reference, but if you plan on learning anything, this is not the book for you. Typos and the overuse of the same symbols to mean everything create an unfriendly environment for the reader. The book goes into unnecessary derivations and presents the material in a backward order that confuses the reader. In summary: Let H0 be the author's intended message to the reader. Let N be the organization and writing style of the book. Let D0 be the reader's proper interpretation of the author's message. The reader's interpretation is then I = H0+N. Then P(D0|I) <0.25

1 out of 5 stars I would give it zero stars if that was an option.......2000-09-13

This book is written with so much hand-waving that a reader attempting to learn the subject must spend all of their time trying to figure out what the mathematics are that lead to the GOD given answers that Robby N. McDontKnow supplies us with. That last statement may have been a little harsh, but the missing mathematics combined with the frequent typos of the text provide for unequal frustration for any student attempting to learn this topic.

                              Book Description

Euripides has been prized in every age for the pathos, terror, surprising plot twists, and intellectual probing of his dramatic creations. In this fifth volume of the new Loeb Classical Library Euripides, David Kovacs presents a freshly edited Greek text and a faithful and deftly worded translation of three plays.

For his Helen the poet employs an alternative history in which a virtuous Helen never went to Troy but spent the war years in Egypt, falsely blamed for the adulterous behavior of her divinely created double in Troy. This volume also includes Phoenician Women, Euripides' treatment of the battle between the sons of Oedipus for control of Thebes; and Orestes, a novel retelling of Orestes' lot after he murdered his mother, Clytaemestra. Each play is annotated and prefaced by a helpful introduction.
