Brazil ranks among the largest countries in the world, in terms of its people, its landmass, and its economy. It is endowed with a highly entrepreneurial people, rich cultural heritage, precious natural resources, well-developed socio-political institutions and a sophisticated economy. Over the last decades, Brazil has made vast progress, in particular in its social indicators and it economic institutions. Brazil - Equitable, Competitive, Sustainable provides a range of policy information prepared by the World Bank's Brazil Team with partners during 2002. It aims to contribute to the discussion in Brazil and elsewhere about public policies to be formulated by the Brazilian governments for the period 2003-2006, and beyond, as well as being a vehicle to exchange lessons of experience from Brazil to the rest of the world and vice versa. The information presented in this book is organized along five overarching themes: investing in people; improving productivity; managing natural resources; delivering government services to all; and stabilizing the economy. Part I brings contributions on education, health and social protection, and discusses human and social protection, and human and social capital challenges. Part II is focused on finance, infrastructure, private sector development, and innovation and technology issues, summing up the experience and views on physical capital and investment climate. Part III corresponds to natural capital and quality of life issues, bringing messages on forest use and conservation, rural development, natural resources, and urban and water services. Finally Part IV addresses the prerequisite for the other themes, analyzing conditions for macroeconomic stability, fiscal sustainability, and good governance.

An Excellent Text for Adoption in a Bioethics Course.......2003-09-16

I adopted this text in a graduate-level bioethics course for dual-degree medical students to introduce students to the leading legal cases that have proved so influential in the field of bioethics. (I used this text to supplement more philosophical-ethical-type readings.) At the end of the semester I was surprised by the number of glowing comments I received from students about this text. The text is structured along the lines of a law school case book. Most of the classic cases in bioethics are represented, as well as leading cases of relevance to medical practitioners. The author's introductory comments to each topic situate the cases in their historical, social, political, or legal contexts. I particularly found the notes and questions following each case to be extremely helpful and illuminating, and would often use these to orient and focus class discussions. Academics interested in adopting this text will be interested to know that the author provides, free of charge, an invaluable Teaching Manual to supplement this text (the author's email address is provided in the introduction). This text would be an excellent choice for adoption in graduate-level bioethics courses aimed at medical students, or as a text for a bioethics or health law course in law schools. It would also be suitable for an upper level undergraduate bioethics course in philosophy departments. Finally, this text would also be accessible to the intelligent reader with a general interest in some of the most interesting bioethical issues facing the medical and legal professions today, or to anyone interested in understanding the ways in which courts have addressed these issues. No technical medical or legal knowledge is presupposed by this text.

A Seed is Something Special Indeed.......2002-03-12

Over the years, the diversity of seeds available to the gardener has decreased considerably. For vegetables, for instance, the number of non-hybrid varieties offered by seed companies is approximately 5,000 between 1984 and 1994, according to one of the authors in this fine book. Not only is this a matter of concern in terms of the stability of our food supply--lack of genetic diversity makes the few remaining species that are widely used much more vulnerable to unforseen problems--it means that many gardeners are being denied the opportunity to grow vegetables that are widely held to be better tasting. One solution is to grow heirlooms and save the seeds year after year, and Starting From Seed is a concise and readable introduction to the vital process of starting and collecting seeds. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to other beginner organic gardeners.

A great book for those who are just starting out.......2004-02-02

This book is exactly what it says in the title: a PRIMER and an ALMANAC. It is perfect for those who are starting seeds for the first time and want to know more about preparing, planting and harvesting a garden throughout the year. I loved the monthly to-do lists for each USDA hardiness zone. Now I know what I need to do each month to keep my garden running smoothly. I love Rodale books and this one is no exception. I found this book helpful, informative and inspiring. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to start their own seeds indoors or just needing a good gardening book.

Not much about actual seed starting here!.......2003-02-16

I was looking for a seed-starting primer, like the title promised. Instead, I got probably one full chapter on seed starting, and eleven chapters on general gardening. I usually like what Rodale preaches -- I'm a dedicated composter myself. But if you title a book "Seed-Starting Primer" then I think it should be mostly about starting from seed.

I'm very disappointed and am now looking for an actual seed starting book.

A unique effort..........2006-02-19

Potential energy surfaces are instrumental in all aspects of nanoscale phenomena and they are well suited to be treated as a unifying theme for the study of chemical physics. In this respect, this book is unique... The topics it tackles, while interest to many researchers in manifold fields, have never been distilled into a single volume. And this first effort deserves kudos.

Each chapter(there are 10 chapters in the whole book)is supported with an exhaustive list of references and is reasonably self contained. Moreover, there is an immediate sense of coherence and the topical flow is rather well laid out. However, it is not a textbook with all that it implies. Wales provides a updated (as of the time of his writing (2003)) account of various topics, but none of them are treated assuming a classroom style. However, the reader is referred to the pertinent literature with valuable remarks as to what is to be found in which particular reference. The proofs to the equations are largely avoided but their origin and the physical implications are given a fair treatment. The required
mathematical background to follow the text is rather modest, while the wide spectrum of topics covered curbs its potential as a real page turner for the novice.

The illustrations are abound and in color which is a definitive plus. The binding and the paper quality is first class. The typeface is Donald Knuth`s Computer Modern with 11/14pt letter size, and this genuinely alleviates the reading process. My only quibble is the uneven quality of the images permeating the text as some of them have been culled from different sources.

I think the book serves its purpose very well and it is a good introductory exposition to a subject with utmost importance in nanoscience. I highly recommend it to anyone whose work involves materials science, chemisty or physics.

Can't get enough.......2004-04-11

Wales must have cloned himself multiple times in order to have found time to have written such a comprehensive book. I'll leave the science for people smarter than I to judge, but I'm giving it 5 stars based on its visual impact alone. I just can't get enough of his beautifully created graphics of undulating potential energy surfaces and cluster rearangement pathways (to name but two examples). Wales is showing us the elegance of his chosen field- and in a way that's simple enough for us dullards to appreciate. I wonder if he's considered a second career in designing topologically interesting furniture, upholstered in only the finest convex polyhedra. This book will no doubt become required reading for those in the molecular simulation community and will be especially ideal for those starting out on their phd's.

Minor points: A cursory read has shown a few typographical errors, which should be corrected in future editions. I also found the references at the end of chapters a little unwieldy. It would also have been nice for Wales to have included a bibliography of recommended texts that could be used to take some of the ideas further.

Set in a Trinidad island village in the 1950s, Bruised Hibiscus by Elizabeth Nunez (Distinguished Professor of English and Director of the Black Writers Institute, Medgar Evers College, City University of New York) is the compelling story of two female friends who witnessed a woman's unspeakable murder through a hibiscus bush as children, and memories of the horror haunt their lives, destroy their ability to form healthy relationships, and ultimately bring about their reunion and a search for freedom and balance. A gripping, deadly serious story of crime and its emotional toll, Bruised Hibiscus is strongly recommended reading. Also highly recommended are Elizabeth Nunez's earlier novels: When Rocks Dance and Beyond.

A worthy read.......2002-05-25

Brusied Hibiscus is set just as the shadows of colonialism begin to recede in 1950`s Trinidad. Wealthy white planters still control the bulk of labor prospects. African, South Asian and Chinese immigrants work the land living in stark contrast to the wealth of whites. At this time, and in this place, the stories of two women unfold.

Zuela is twenty-eight, already the mother of ten children and married to Ho Sang, a man old enough to be her grandfather who insists on treating her as one would an incompetent child. The other is named Rosa, also twenty-eight, the youngest daughter of a white plantation owner. The only of three sisters not sent to England for betrothal and the only to marry a Black man, deemed worthy in part because of his occupation. The two women shared a bond like sisterhood as children, but each has forgotten the other in adulthood.

However, when the decomposing body of a white woman is found in a river in the town of Otahiti, the intricate skein of race, gender, class, and culture that propels Trinidad forward begins to come undone. The news spreads far and fast and while some are quick to dismiss it as man-woman business, most know the act is indicative of much more. The dead woman`s body triggers a memory of sexual abuse that Zuela and Rosa witnessed together as girls. Each is forced to recognize that she must make a change in her life or risk losing herself or killing someone else. And so for the second time, Zuela and Rosa`s path cross.

Nunez is a gifted writer. She employs the brevity and repetition of poetry in her work. She writes unpretentiously, deftly inserting sex, murder and cruelty into a story that also speaks truth to friendship, love and a miracle or two. She is able to create a telling story that is not cheapened by the often-exploited aforementioned themes. Her writing is like the sway in the walk of a confident woman. Buy it. Read it. It`s good.

Telling Beautiful/Painful Truths.......2000-11-06

One of the things I liked best about this book is how Elizabeth Nunez unflinchingly tells some pretty "hard truths" about issues that most writers would rather skirt: colonialism, racism, male/female relationships, sexual and emotional abuse, murder and power relations. However, let me not give the impression that this is some kind of boring, heavy-handed manifesto -- I lost sleep over "Bruised Hibiscus" because I couldn't put the book down. It's a painful, traumatic kind of read (especially for anyone who has suffered abuse themselves) that doesn't exactly make you feel like skipping through the tulips once you've finished -- but that's exactly the point. It's also an engaging, thought-provoking, and beautifully written book that really "hooks" you.

Powerful novel.......2000-10-05

Bruised Hibiscus is a powerful novel. The author, Elizabeth Nunez, explores two Trinidadian women, their lives, their marriages, and how a series of events explodes their unsatisfactory, stagnant existence. A disturbing, compelling work, full of lush description and strongly drawn characters. A world of Caribbean obeah and Catholicism, everyday domesticity and marital drama. Throughout the book, there is always an undercurrent of the power of friendship, love, and the inescapable past. An important Caribbean work.

sensuous and powerful.......2000-07-08

Set in Trinidad in 1954, this is the story of two women, Rosa and Zuela, who are linked by an act they witnessed together as children: the sexual violation of a young girl. Adults now, and long separated, their lives come together again through the catalyst of a murdered woman's body found by a fisherman. The murder, and their husbands' reaction to it, shakes loose something in the consciousness of both women. This is "man-woman business." They recognize it in its extreme, and they set about to reclaim their lives, at whatever cost. The book is a dark exploration of sexuality and power and is well worth the read. My one objection is to the style of the book. The prose definitely veers toward the purple end of the spectrum, and the run-on sentences often include repeated parts of previous sentences, that repeat over and over throughout the book. This is done perhaps to lend power to the words, in the manner of an incantation, but the effect is somewhat akin to reading "This is the house that Jack built..." and becomes an obtrusion that ends up detracting from, rather than enhancing this powerful story.
