Looking at how Latin American countries have coped with the 1994 Mexican crisis and the earlier debt crisis of the 1980s, this book reveals the full extent of what has come to be known as the "tequila effect." Written by distinguished economists and financiers from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States, the volume also examines the social, political, and economic issues associated with ever-expanding trade and globalization. The book opens with chapters considering the impact of the Mexican crisis on Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela, and it provides an interesting account of the events leading up to the crisis itself. In the following section, the contributors examine issues of economic growth by considering such topics as the need for a new growth strategy, by comparing the Latin American and Asian economies, and by looking at the Cuban economy from a trading partner's perspective. The final section takes an indepth look at the complex issues of neoliberalist versus neopopulist thinking in shaping Latin America's economic policies for the 21st century.

The economic achievements of several East Asian countries over the past quarter century have had an enormous impact on development policy. The number of people below the poverty line in these countries has fallen dramatically. Per capita income has risen so fast that some of the economies are no longer classified as "developing."
These East Asian economies have grown more than three times faster than the Latin American and Caribbean countries during the same period. Pathways to Growth examines the diverging experiences of the two regions. Chapters by researchers, policymakers and statesmen from Latin America, East Asia and other parts of the world analyze economic growth, savings rates, capital markets, exports, education policies and economic reform. Pointing to Latin America's own recent economic reforms and achievements, the authors examine how development policies key to East Asia's success could be applied to the Latin American experience.

In the first comprehensive study of election law since the Supreme Court decided Bush v. Gore, Richard L. Hasen rethinks the Court's role in regulating elections. Drawing on the case files of the Warren, Burger, and Rehnquist courts, Hasen roots the Court's intervention in political process cases to the landmark 1962 case, Baker v. Carr. The case opened the courts to a variety of election law disputes, to the point that the courts now control and direct major aspects of the American electoral process.
The Supreme Court does have a crucial role to play in protecting a socially constructed "core" of political equality principles, contends Hasen, but it should leave contested questions of political equality to the political process itself. Under this standard, many of the Court's most important election law cases from Baker to Bush have been wrongly decided.

This book is a bunch of cartoons with no answers to the questions. To understand the book you have to have a sense of imagination. The author gets too personal with his pictures instead of teaching about phyical science.

Great Introduction.......2003-07-05
When people ask who my favorite author is, Wallace Stegner is invariably one of the four or five names I toss out. And often I get the same response... "I've never read any Stegner" or even "I don't know the name". Stegner seems to be one of American literatures best kept secrets.
These stories are an excellent introduction to Stegner, his style, and his ability to write vividly about life. A number of the stories in this collection were eventually incorporated as chapters in three of his novels: "The Big Rock Candy Mountain", "Recapitulation", and "Wolf Wilow".
Stegner's Collection of Stories is all You'll Need.......2000-06-13
Of all the authors I have read, few evoke such good feelings as Wallace Stegner. It's a shame that he was killed in a car crash in the early 1990s. I think he was just getting warmed up and he certainly had decades of experience yet to share with us. This collection of stories, like his novels, shows the conflicts of the human soul. Stegner liked to write about young boys coming of age in an often thoughtless society (and family). And, as you will learn by reading Jackson Benson's biography of him, Stegner had an autobiographical bent while writing his fiction. The locales of his stories resemble those places where his gambling, drinking father took him and his family in the early 1900s. It seems that Stegner was obsessed with his father, and many of his stories feature a version of him. He and his father had a rather poor relationship and Stegner's writing about him perhaps was his effort at catharsis. My favorite story in this collection is Goin' to Town. The expectations of this poor boy are shot to .... and he is left to endure the boredom of yet another day. Excellent stories, excellent writer.
