      Book Description

America has long enjoyed a love/hate relationship with its attorneys; jokes equating lawyers with vermin abound at the same time that our love of litigation is reflected in a doubling of the ranks of lawyers since the 1960s. Though we often see the lawyer as a crusading lone wolf of justice, the illuminating Lives of Lawyers demonstrates that the integrity of individual lawyers is fundamentally influenced by the nature of the legal organizations that have come to dominate the field. In fleshing out these agencies of legal expertise, Kelly offers important insights into the personal ideals of lawyers, the struggle to clarify professionalism as interpreted by the legal origination, and the effects of these factors on society's perceptions of law and lawyering.
Lives of Lawyers paints an intimate portrait of five legal entities: two corporate firms, an in-house corporate counsel's office, and a public interest agency. Each is viewed through a kaleidoscope of client/colleague relationships, connections to civic and community life, income levels and career satisfaction of attorneys, the social status of the organization, and the character of the particular law practiced. These detailed portrayals vividly reveal the diversity inherent to the profession and the wealth of responses to the question of what shapes the values of today's legal practices. The author's deft use of narrative and debt to the discipline of biography and sociology make his five stores a first-rate read.
Kelly gets into the trenches with lawyers comprising these organizations; they don't mince words in passing judgment on themselves, their employers, or the state of the profession--particularly its growing commercialism. Nonetheless, Lives of Lawyers reminds us of the constantly renewed dedication by lawyers to the principles of legal professionalism.
Michael J. Kelly is University Vice President and Professor of Law, Georgetown University.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant overview of organizations at work.......2003-12-04

We spend our lives in organizations, but how often do we have a chance to think about them clearly? Kelly sets a standard for thinking about a profession that everyone finds fascinating. This book is to non-fiction what Grisham's are to fiction: Kelly brings the practice of law to life. The book combines thorough, long-term research with an engaging style. Kelly analyzes several different types of law practices: their histories and likely futures. Through him we meet the lawyers, but more importantly, we meet the practice of law.

1 out of 5 stars Incomplete - Must rely on other textbooks or class notes.......2005-04-13

This book is a prime example of textbooks that don't offer complete explanations of the subject. The author has complete sections with no example problems, just writing. There is nothing wrong with this, but the questions at the end of each section do not match the information that AUTHORS provided for that section. DO NOT RELY ON THIS BOOK IF YOU REALLY WANT A FIRM UNDERSTANDING OF COLLEGE PHYSICS. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY ANY COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY WOULD USE THIS BOOK. Do not rely on this book for anything except a paper weight. This book is a complete joke!

4 out of 5 stars an old classic.......2004-07-02

there are countless physics books out there and trust me, i've probably gone through at least half a dozen intro physics ones. i took ap physics in high school and then the full year of physics at college (the introductory year-long course). i also ta-ed and tutored physics at other colleges besides my own during the summer and of course, every school has a different textbook. and as i've gone through so many, i find myself coming back to this one.

this is appropriate for those who are taking either the calc-based or noncalc-based physics course. it does have calc-related derivations in it but you can simply ignore those and still understand what they're trying to say. what i like about it mostly is that it gives it to you in a very no-nonsense kind of way (i.e. here is the concept, here are the equations, here are some examples. there is no frivilous colorful images, no detailed digressions - the entire book is pretty monochromatic and straight-forward. this is good, at least to me, because i've always hated how some textbooks fill up a page of useless information). another great feature is that it has some excellent pictural diagrams that accompany what it's trying to teach.

i won't lie, it's not an "easy" textbook but it's not "hard as hell" either. it plans on teaching you real college-level stuff and i think that the difficulty level is very appropriate for most college-level courses. i always use this book as a companion to whatever other textbook the college is forcing me to use and time and time again, i find myself flipping through this one whenever i get confused over a concept. it's well-written and worth it, at least in my opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Not too good.......1999-07-27

Found this book to be rather lacking in clear elucidation of fundamental physical topics, but the pictures were good

5 out of 5 stars Great book for preparing for IIT JEE.......1998-12-31

I used this book to prepare for IIT-JEE in India. It is an excellent book! Two-enthusiastic thumbs up!

A long awaited update - and much more.

Dave Harker's new work is the first is the first book-length study of Robert
Tressell to be published since F C Ball's 1973 biography One of the Damned,
which came out in 1973 and has been out of print for many years. More
importantly, perhaps, it is the first substantial subsequent study that,
whilst drawing on Ball's work, has examined it critically and looked beyond it
to primary sources. In this endeavour, Harker has benefited greatly from his
access to the ever-expanding archive compiled and administered by Reg Johnson,
whose late wife, Joan, was Tressell's grand-daughter and last surviving direct
                  descendant.

The value of Fred Ball's astonishing efforts in tracking down the manuscript
of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, restoring it as closely to its
author's original intended text as could reasonably be expected, given the
limited resources available to him, and collating the biographical detail he

gathered over a period of over thirty years is immense. This should not,
however, be allowed to hide the fact that his research was incomplete, and his
conclusions occasionally flawed. More recent essays that have failed to take
account of this do no justice to Ball by treating his findings as gospel
rather than building on them and augmenting them. The most recent and
exciting exception to this is Jonathan Hyslop's discovery of the documents
relating to Tressell's divorce case, in South Africa.

The first section of Harker's book provides an updated narrative of the life
of the author and the early history of the manuscript, its original discovery
by those who were in a position to bring about its publication and the two
editing processes that it was subjected to in order to produce the severely
mangled 1914 edition and the even more drastically abridged one shilling
edition first published in 1918. All of this is told against the background
of a lively account of the socialist and labour politics of the time, which
continues as Harker relates the book's subsequent history through its
publication record and the stories of those who read it and whose lives were
radicalised by it. Ball's story is incorporated skilfully into this, as are the arcane ideological manoeuvrings of the various incarnations of the UK communist parties and their Trotskyist opponents. Overall the narrative is one of betrayal, the betrayal of ideals and of the people whose protection and advancement lies at the core of the socialist ideal as embodied in The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, culminating in the ultimate betrayal that is New Labour. Surveys of Labour MPs still indicate that Tressell's work is the favourite book of the Parliamentary Labour Party but one wonders how long it is since any of them actually read it!

Like Tressell, Harker is strong on diagnoses but less so on detailed remedies for the ills of the system that now dominates global culture, but also like Tressell he ends on an upbeat, with a timely call to arms and a plea for unity amongst those who crave the dismantling of capitalism and the construction of Tressell's dream of a Co-operative Commonwealth.

Anyone who wants to know all that is currently known about Tressell and The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, or to read an accessible summary of British Labour history, should buy/read this book.

Incidentally, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists seems to be availble in the US only as an expensive import, even though it is beginning to figure on University syllabuses. Time for a campaign to get it back in print over there I think.

                  Book Description

'The present system means joyless drudgery, semi-starvation, rags and premature death; and they vote for it and uphold it. Let them have what they vote for! Let them drudge and let them starve!' There is no other novel quite like The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists. George Orwell called it 'a wonderful book'; its readers have become a living part of its remarkable history. Tressell's novel is about survival on the underside of the Edwardian Twilight, about exploitative employment when the only safety nets are charity, workhouse, and grave. Following the fortunes of a group of painters and decorators and their families, and the attempts to rouse their political will by the Socialist visionary Frank Owen, the book is both a highly entertaining story and a passionate appeal for a fairer way of life. It asks questions that are still being asked today: why do your wages bear no relation to the value of your work? Why do fat cats get richer when you don't? Tressell's answers are 'The Great Money Trick' and the 'philanthropy' of an unenlightened workforce, who give away their rights and aspirations to a decent life so freely. Intellectually enlightening, deeply moving and gloriously funny (complete with exploding clergyman), The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a book that changes lives.

While reading the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists I was aware that I was reading a truly great book but also that the prose and structure was poor. I think that, in a strange way, the book benefits from this as it gives the pages a raw genuine feel. It's a little repetitive, didactic and author Tressel is tough on his characters. It was strange for me reading about similar boss corruptions, abuses of authority, sycophancy a hundred years ago. Though in those days the target was more work for food, now the target is more is that newer car or perhaps that bigger house. It stinks now as it did then but I was so glad to read a book with it all laid out. John Steinbeck also has touched upon it in the Grapes of Wrath less brutally but more beautifully. I would like to force everyone to read this book - especially the Misery's. A friend recently told me that the book was initially entitled The Ragged Ars** Philanthropists.Any way it was very good. N.B. I tried to change my rating to four stars but the Amazon site wouldn't let me!

3 out of 5 stars Good introduction to socialism.......2004-03-16

This book is essentially classic socialist thought bundled into a story, all be it a story based closely on the life of the author. Half biography, half political philosophy course in socialism the Ragged trousered Philanthropists somehow works as a novel. The plot is interesting but tedious at times, the dialog is spot on and the atmosphere is brilliant. This is no doubt due to the personal experience of the author.

It is very preachy, a no holds barred attack against capitalism and a shockingly biased view of socialism. But it's a brilliant way to find out about Socialsim, at times inspiring and delving deep into minds of those who wish for change.

The book is very good, worth four stars maybe. I gave it three because of the text book feel it generates at times.

                  5 out of 5 stars Be enlightened.......2003-12-10

I think that this book is excellent. It illustrates the workers, who have been made ignorant by a capitalist system premised on the values of feaudalism, in which wokers - or serfs - know their place, which is at the bottom of the hierachy. This contributes towards the workers intrasigence in their refusal to see the causes of their poverty, which subsequently causes them to be ingnorant. Those who became enlightened to the true causes of their poverty could be forgiven in their reluctance to fully embrace socialism for they were in a minority, and prone to assault as illustrated in the book.

This attitude prevails today, as it did in the early part of the 20th century, in that the majority of the British working class still insist that poverty, and inequality are caused by the drunken, the lazy unemployed, lone parents asylem seekers, and cheap foreign imports. As this attitude is encouraged by media propaganda, in a similar manner as those who benefit from the system in Tressell's book, then the working classes of post modern Britain remain just as intrasegent and ignorant as ever, the majority seeing edication as irrelevant to to them.

One aspect of the book that I am grateful to Tressel for is the way he highlighted the conditions of women in working class Britain in the early 20th century. By doing this Tressell gives credibility to the feminist movement, and its achievements so far.

5 out of 5 stars The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists.......2003-08-30

A lady I worked with, a long time ago, recommended this book to me. It is genuinely Socialistic in outlook (although Mr. Tressell was not afraid to critise what he saw as 'wrongs' in Socialism itself. This makes great sense, as no one political system is perfect as we all know.

The book is based on a Company of builders in the early 20th Century 'Botich & Co.' if I remember rightly. You read the conditions of the workers which are pretty harrowing (as working class environment was, at the time). You meet the workers' families as well. You see the struggles they have to survive on the times when bad weather put the builders 'off work'

The Foreman liased between the Management and the workers. I cannot remember his name now, as it is a long time since I have read the book.He is an important character.

Some of the workers' try to justify their injustices as being 'what they, as working class people must expect' There was One man who joined the company, who tried to educate his fellow workers as to how wrong they were, about the inequalities of Capitalism. He was not popular for taking this stance.

It sounds a heavy book, but it is extremely readeable. I recommend it to anyone interested in how people lived and worked. It does NOT force you into taking a political stance. The book is there to be enjoyed...

5 out of 5 stars Utterly unknown masterpiece.......2003-01-10

A friend of mine sent me this book, which I had never heard of at the time. If you get past the awkward title, and the somewhat purple Victorian prose, it really is a wonderful book. First and foremost, it reads really well. It's well-written, the story is compelling, and the characters likeable. The overall flavor I would describe as Dickensian, although nowhere near as baroque or whimsical. So it's not some boring polemic. And, second, it's socialist in its outlook. It explains socialism and the old Labour movement not in some theoretical, jargonistic way, but by means of practical examples that the central character uses to explain the movement to his co-workers. At the same time they're learning, you're learning, too - and it's very well done. Of course, the plot of the story drives home the lessons you've learned as well. And the arguments for more social equity work - I guess they can be argued against, if you're so inclined, but they're not at all simplistic or overly idealistic - they're really rather practical. Overall, a wonderful book for just about anyone thinking about the construction of society - even capitalists who'd like to cut their teeth against challenging political arguments.

This is an updated work by the Hasting's born author Fred Ball. His earlier work (Tressell of Mugsborough) scractched the surface of Tressell's life but it left many question's unanswered/guessed at. This updated biography is written in a much more reader friendly format. Ball goes in search of the socialist literary ideal on the basis of the fictional "Mugsborough" being his home town of Hastings. This fact combined with the author's grave in Liverpool starts Ball on a detective story to learn about the real Tressell, one Robert Noonan. The search takes one through a series of interviews with unhelpful relatives who come across as the anti-thesis of the Owen character. Suprisingly more help are some of the still working decorating firms in the Hastings area, they do however question the descriptions of working life at the time (well they would I suppose!) Of a more enlightening note the story of the manuscript reminds us of the battle to actually get the book published. This narrative reminds us of the reasons for the lack of working class literature available at the time (only 90 years ago). Tressell certainly lead an interesting life up till his time in Hastings, the fact the semi-nomadic guy remained perhaps hides darker secrets as yet uncovered. The overall result is perhaps a disapointment, the socialist literary hero has a definite upper middle class background, and I think Ball feels a little let down. A consuming read, if you can get hold of a copy.
