Microbial Physiology and Biochemistry Laboratory: A Quantitative Approach
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0195113136 |
Book Description
Microbial Physiology and Biochemistry Laboratory illustrates the major features of growth and metabolism discussed in David White's The Physiology and Biochemistry of Prokaryotes (OUP, 1995). It serves as an ideal adjunct to this text and can also be used in conjunction with other books for the laboratory component of a microbial physiology course. All of the experiments described in this manual have been taught as part of a laboratory course for junior and senior biology and microbiology majors at Indiana University. In addition to reinforcing what students learn in lecture, the experiments guide students through a wide spectrum of analytical techniques including enzyme assays, macromolecular assays, column chromatography, gel electrophoresis, and gas chromatography. Along with enzyme assays and enzyme purification, students do experiments measuring oxygen uptake, chemotaxis, fermentation, and bacterial luminescence. The organisms studied include Escherichia, Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Proteus, Rhodospirillum, Photobacterium, and Saccharomyces. The volume is enhanced by appendices which include sections on quantitative problems and their solutions, instructions on how to write a laboratory report, and independent projects that are extensions of the class experiments. The number of experiments exceeds the amount of material usually offered in one semester, giving instructors the option to choose those experiments that are most appropriate for their classes.

Mass Spectrometry of Phospholipids: Tables of Molecular and Product Ions
Robert C. Murphy Manufacturer: Illuminati Pr Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 0970283415 |
Book Description
Advances in mass spectrometry have led to a revolution in structural biology that now includes the facile analysis of complex glycerophospholipids and sphingolipids. The world of phospholipid analysis brings into immediate focus the problems of complex mixture analysis with closely related molecules, in fact molecular species of nearly identical molecules. The tables in this book have been used in our laboratory to aid in the initial characterization of a phospholipid and facilitate designing the next mass spectrometric experiment (collisional activation) to perform. With such data, it is then possible to generate a reasonably accurate structural hypothesis for each specific molecular species in an extract.

You stare at the person you met an hour ago, but her name eludes you. You exit the shopping mall and have no idea where you parked your car. You can sing a song that was popular when you were a teenager, but you can't remember the book you read last week. If you're suffering from the effects of age-associated memory impairment (AAMI), you're in a crowd of millions. By age 79, memory of written material declines 43 percent, and memory of names one hour after introduction declines 74 percent. But according to The Memory Cure, phosphatidylserine (PS), a soy-based nutritional supplement, has been scientifically proven to help people recapture their slipping memories. The Memory Cure tells everything you ever wanted to know about memory, making scientific information lucid and accessible. Memory expert Thomas Crook and health researcher-writer Brenda Adderly discuss the different types of memory, why we forget, and how PS works to invigorate memory. The authors present a six-step "memory cure" plan, plus a variety of memory-enhancing tips, techniques, and games. They discuss lifestyle choices that can affect memory, such as foods, supplements, exercise, and stress management. Get this book before you forget that you read this! --Joan Price

Generally a disappointment.......2000-09-09
Instead of helping, the knowledge from books read earlier made me notice the many errors in this book - caused, I believe, by trying to make the book more readable. It also made it less accurate.
There are few miracles - PS is not one of them. If it were it would be in universal use.
A much better book, in my estimation, is "Mind Boosters" by Ray Sahelian, M.D.
An excellent morsel of information.......1998-10-02
This book is easy to read, written in layman's terms........1998-09-25

Synthetic Surfactant Vesicles: Niosomes and Other Non-Phospholipid Vesicular Systems (Drug Targeting and Delivery)
L F Uchegbu Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9058230112 |
Book Description
The self-assembly of synthetic surfactants and other non-phospholipids into vesicles was first studied in the 1970s by cosmetic scientists when non-ionic surfactant vesicles or niosomes were reported. Since this time a large body of research has sought to define these systems primarily as drug carriers and also as features of interest to the colloid scientist. Synthetic surfactant vesicles, as the name implies, may also be fabricated from a vast array of amphiphiles, including a number of pharmaceutically acceptable materials. They may also be prepared in a variety of shapes and sizes and have a number of applications. This book is designed to serve as an introductory text to the science of non-phospholipid vesicles and will be of use to colloid, drug delivery, cosmetic, and materials scientists. It aims to acquaint the reader with the physicochemistry and biomedical applications of these synthetic surfactant non-phospholipid vesicles. Part one introduces the reader to physicochemical aspects of these synthetic surfactant dispersions and explores the diversity of materials that may be used to formulate vesicles. Part two details methods of vesicle preparation and the application of synthetic surfactant vesicles in a variety of fields ranging from anti-cancer chemotherapy to immunization.

Aerosol Optical Depth Retrieval by NPS Model Modified for SEAWIFS Input
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423508068 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A994604. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Using visible wavelength radiance data obtained from the spaceborne Sea-viewing Wide Field of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS), during the Aerosol Characterization Experiment-Asia (ACE-Asia), an analysis of aerosol optical depth (AOD) was completed by modification to the NPS AOD Model previously compiled for NOAA geosynchronous- and polar-orbiting satellites. The objective of the analysis was to calibrate the linearized, single-scatter algorithm, estimated bi-directional surface reflectance, and phase function parameters. The intent of the study was to provide enhanced temporal AOD coverage with the addition of the orbiting SeaWiFS eight-channel radiometer to the established NOAA constellation of five-channel AVHRR-equipped satellites. The work has operational significance in providing timely, accurate remote information to military operators of identification and targeting systems. Possible applications include detection and warning of international treaty violation of reducing the adverse public health effects by weapons of mass destruction of pollution advection on global weather patterns.

The Storming Media report number is A199483. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: On-scene characterization of the battlespace environment is critical toward providing the warfighter with an effective understanding of the environment and its impact on weapon systems and sensors and requires the rapid acquisition and dissemination of on-scene meteorological and oceanographic (METOC) measurements. The current practice of manually observing and recording METOC data is labor intensive, outdated, and no longer capable of satisfying the requirements for higher temporal and spatial observations. This study reviews the current methodology to characterize the battlespace environment, summarizes relevant Navy needs, and describes the results of integrating a prototype small combatant integrated METOC system (SCIMS) developed by the Naval Postgraduate School, with a prototype data processing and distribution system (Weather Viewer) developed by SPAWARSYSCEN San Diego. At-sea demonstration included the acquisition, encoding, transmission and retrieval of real-time observations to/ from shore based METOC data servers at Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center via commercial telephone access to the Internet. The demonstration further served as the basis for development of a PC based prototype shipboard METOC archive and reports system called SMART Log. The study concludes with particular recommendations for updating and improving the system of environmental data collection, processing, utilization, and archival.

The Biology of Surfactant
Brian A. Hills Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521307287 |
Book Description
This book attempts to explain the mechanisms by which surfactants - specifically, the surface-active phospholipids - exert their physiological functions in the body. There is much controversy as to the role of surfactant in the lung, and the veracity of the various alveolar models, which are clearly evaluated in The Biology of Surfactant. The text goes on to describe the nature of surfactant in the gastro-intestinal tract, joints and at tissue surfaces in other organs where it could have several useful functions. These are related to work on synthetic- surfactants which may shed light on natural mechanisms with important implications for medical research. In each of these the underlying physico-chemical principles are emphasized in a manner accessible to the biologist and physician. By giving an overview of theories as to the role and mechanism of surfactants - including hid own forthright views - Professor Hills has provided a comprehensive and stimulating text. The volume will appeal to researchers and students of physiology, paediatrics, obstetrics, rheurnatology, neonatology; specialists in pulmonary physiology and chest diseases; surgeons, biochemists, microbiologists whose work relates to surfactants in the lung and other organs.

Characterization of Operator-Reported Discrepancies in Unmanned On-Orbit Space Systems
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423527011 |
Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A221593. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The purpose of this research is to characterize the number and type of problems satellite operators encounter during the course of routine daily activities. In the context of this paper, a discrepancy is defined as the perception by an operator that some portion of the space system has failed to operate as designed. Discrepancies can therefore include ground system malfunctions, procedural errors, and even misdiagnosis that a problem exists, in addition to actual spacecraft anomalies. The study is designed to test the following hypotheses using a verifiable, quantitative analysis: (1) the majority of problems encountered by an operator do not involve the spacecraft at all, but are attributed to other elements of the space system; and (2) correlations exist between aspects of a space system design and the nature of problems experienced by the operations staff over the long term. To perform an applied, rather than theoretical, analysis, several representative aerospace organizations provided historical discrepancy reports for satellites currently being flown. Government civilian and military organizations participated in the study, which encompassed spacecraft from several mission areas, including remote sensing, research & development, communications, and observatories. Raw discrepancy data was collected from each organization in the form of electronic databases or hand- written logs.

A Characterization of the Impact of Clouds on Remotely Sensed Water Quality
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423542266 |
The Storming Media report number is A504073. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Atmospheric correction and subsequent chlorophyll detection algorithms via remote sensing means were designed for use over the world's oceans. The algorithms seem to fail when used on data taken over the Laurentian Great Lakes. Two primary reasons for the failure have been identified as higher suspended minerals in the Great Lakes than in the oceans and normally higher cloud cover over the Great Lakes. A characterization of the impact of clouds on the radiance reaching remote sensing platforms has been performed. From this characterization, the impact on the calculated chlorophyll content determined by current algorithms is derived. The work presented here describes the creation of an end-to-end radiative transfer model for the complete sun-air-water-air- detector system and the application of that model to perform the cloud impact characterization. The radiative transfer model is modular; the modules relate to each propagation/scattering regime. Existing radiative transfer computer codes were used when the required accuracy and resolution could be met. The cloud module in particular represents an advance in the radiative transfer methods found in the literature.
