Understanding State Constitutions
ASIN: 0226283372 |
Book Description
Interpreting State Constitutions examines and proposes a solution to a problem central to contemporary debates over the enforcement of civil liberties: how courts, government officials, and lawyers should go about interpreting the constitutions of the American states.
With the Supreme Court's retreat from the aggressive protection of individual rights, state courts have begun to interpret state constitutions to provide broader protection of liberties. This development has reversed the polarity of constitutional politics, as liberals advocate unimpeded state power while conservatives lobby for state subordination to a constitutional law controlled centrally by the Supreme Court.
James A. Gardner here lays out the first fully developed theory of subnational constitutional interpretation. He argues that states are integral components of a national system of overlapping and mutually checking authority and that the purpose of this system is to protect liberty and defend against federal domination. The resulting account provides valuable prescriptive advice to state courts, showing them how to fulfill their responsibilities to the federal system in a way that strengthens American constitutional discourse.

Well Done!.......2007-08-15
This book deals with a rather ignored aspect of the United States political system, state governments. Gardner explains that the States are not dry rip offs of the Federal government but are inspiring and dynamic institutions. For instance most modern developments with civil rights have been evolving at the state level not the Federal. Also this book makes a very interesting analysis of State Supreme Courts. State Supreme Courts, in distinction from the Federal Supreme Court, are more active in their judicial review powers simply by the nature of most State constitutions. This is a must read for anyone interested in Federalism.

Description:
The ubiquitous presence of humic substances (HS), combined with their ability to provide multiple sites for chemical reaction, makes them relevant to numerous biogeochemical processes such as mineral weathering, nutrient bioavailability, and contaminant transport. The reactivity of HS depends on their functional group chemistry and microstructure, which are in turn influenced by the composition of the surrounding media. In order to help towards an understanding of structure conformations and aggregation process of HS in soils and waters and to get a better knowledge of these kinds of materials, a fulvic acid (FA) has been modelled as a function of its ionic state under different conditions. Our proposed theoretical model based on the Temple-Northeastern-Birmingham (TNB) monomer fits well with experimental observations on the solubility (dipolar moment) and electronic and vibrational spectra of FAs. The presence of water molecules has a great stabilization effect on the electrostatic energy; this effect is greater as ionized rate increases. In vacuum, the non-ionized aggregated species are more stable than monomers because of the increase in their interaction due to H-bonding and non-bonding forces. When the molecules are ionized, no aggregation process takes place. In solution, the FA concentration is a critical factor for the aggregation. The system containing two FA molecules probably did not form aggregates because its equivalent concentration was too low. When the concentration was increased, the system gave rise to the formation of aggregates. The ionic state is another critical factor in the aggregation process. The ionized FA has a higher electric negative charge, which increases the energetic barriers and inhibits the approximation of FA caused by the Brownian movement.

A detailed description of what the fourth dimension would be like.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to read & worthy of attention.......2006-07-30
This book is easy to read, but electrifying. I read it when I was twelve, and it changed my life forever. I cannot imagine what kind of person I'd be if I had not read this book.
Of all the books I've read with technical basis, intending to introduce the reader to scientific or mathematical theory - this is among the most entertaining and important I've ever read.
The information in it may be too commonplace for some scientists or mathematicians, but I'd heartily recommend it to the ordinary person who's curious about the world around them!
(& To the scientists and mathematicians I'd still say ... just give a whirl.) :)
The Fourth Dimension as Higher Reality.......2005-01-10
When I first read this book some twenty years ago I found it to be absolutely mind-expanding. It made me begin to see reality in a new, larger, manner- it began to shake loose my preconceptions. Now, when I review it, I find the concepts to be commonplace. How could I have ever thought otherwise? That's a measure of the transforming process that it began in me. This book will start you on the climb to a new intellectual plateau. Even synchronicity, which I had the hardest time accepting, is now a "given" for me.
Rucker is a highly effective writer- for a mathematician. His prose is clear, readable, and humorous. Plus, he examines the subject from mathematical, scientific, philosophical, and spiritual perspectives. His use of relevant quotes throughout the work is excellent- plus there is a very good bibliography for further study.
If you do feel the need for further study (and you will) then try _Exploring the Fourth Dimension_ by Ralphs, or _Extra Dimensional Universe_ by Violette. Then perhaps you may feel up to eventually tackling _Tertium Organum_ by Ouspensky, and _The Multiple States of Being_ by Guenon.
pretty mind bending until he gets on his agenda.......2004-09-26
This book pulls together a lot of study and conjecture about higher dimensions (from everywhere from Abbot's Flatland to Einstein's relativity theory) into one volume, and explains it using easy to understand analogies and imprecise cartoons. It's really cool for a while, even though you might suspect subconsciously that it's not completely realistic to expect to fully understand all this stuff. What helps him clarify so much of these theories about extra directions and the illusions of time is his dogmatism about how within reach all of this is, and this is what hurts the later sections of the book. When he begins to try to stretch this largely impractical science to explain things that really don't seem to make sense, and does it with such a converted manner that you begin to think that he is crazy and maybe you have been being fooled a little...
Great Book on higher dimensions.......2004-09-09
Great Book on higher dimensions, I found that I could not put it down. Illustrations could be updated a little but over all great material. I can also say that I understand gravity better now.
mind-bending yet fulfilling book.......2003-01-08
For all those of you who have questioned your surroundings, this is the perfect book to get you started on a long journey. I read this book over the summer, and it taught me a lot. Not only does Rucker accurately cover the fourth dimension, but it allows your mind to take it other concepts you might have ruled out before. Even though he starts off a little advanced for the beginning reader, it's pretty easy to figure out if you piece everything together. Granted, the end of the book starts to unwind a bit, and the drawings are a little childish, but overall this is one of the best books I've read. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the fourth dimension or concepts beyond their grasp.
Book Description
The Longman Anthology of British Literature is the first new anthology of British literature to appear in over 25 years. A major work of scholarship, it brings together an extraordinary collection of writings spanning some 1300 years of literary history from the Middle Ages to the present. Volume Two covers The Romantics and Their Contemporaries, The Victorian Age, and The Twentieth Century. The text aims to give a less monumental, more contextualized presentation of British literature. The traditional canonical writers are fully represented, with coverage of such central figures as Wordsworth, Conrad, and Joyce. But alongside these are numerous other literary voices, especially those of women. The most distinctive feature of the anthology are groupings of texts that allow contemporary social, political, and literary controversies to unfold in the voices of those who participated in them, thus enabling the great works of British literature to be taught in the context of their times.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful reading.......2007-05-08
I got this book for an English Romanticism class, and apart from assigned readings by the teacher, the book also has biographies of the poets and writers -- really interesting read!
A great anthology!.......2007-02-28
I'm using the Longman Anthology of the Romantics and their Contemporaries (3d edition) for the first time in my 3d-year Romantics course (enrolment 88 and counting!) -- I would like to thank the editors for doing a fantastic job -- the introductory essay (pp. 3-29) is truly unparallelled for clarity, scope, and intelligence -- absolutely filled to the brim with great, challenging ideas. The headnotes provide a meaningful, detailed historical background. Excellent, well annotated selections -- the notes are great too -- not condescending, not entirely ruled by the editors' obsessions, finely articulated. What a sane, sensible, well balanced, erudite anthology! Congratulations and thank you !
Good Book.......2006-11-10
I had this book for a class, it is good and explains the periods and some major authors
Not very good.......2003-12-04
I'm not a huge fan of Medieval literature, and perhaps this book is to blame. I think I've been spoiled by the Norton and Bevington anthologies I've used in other classes, because this was truly a let-down. If you're a prof looking for a good book to use for class, have your students spend the extra twenty-spot and get a Norton.
dont get me started.......2003-02-12
