The greatest economic challenge facing China in the post-Deng era is the reform of unprofitable, state-owned enterprises that have never truly been forced to face the pressure of a bottom line or the threat of bankruptcy. Forging Reform in China explains how and why well-intentioned, market-oriented reform measures have not been sweepingly successful to date, and what it would take to achieve meaningful reform. This book makes a compelling argument that private ownership cannot work in China's current system until governance over complex economic factors has been established, that is, until credit is tightened and market selection processes made to work.

Different opinion, but still a great book.......2002-07-15

I remember one of my professors had said to me: "If you only read one book about SOE reform in China, you must read this one."
His recommendation cannot be more correct. The writer has undergone an in-depth investigation of SOEs and their reform in China. The three case studies, namely, Angang, Magang and Shougang, are all very comprehensive. For anyone interested in corporatization of these SOEs, Chapter 5 is a must-read for them. In all, the book is a tremendous achievement when you consider that the writer is a Westerner.
The writer thinks that the illness of SOEs is due to the continuous supply of soft budget from the government and state-owned bankers. The ownership issue - whether these enterprises are state-owned or in private hand - is not very important. However, my opinion is that you must not be a player when you also assume the role of referee. If this reform is to be successful, a detachment to government is necessary.
Anyway, this is an excellent book.

The author focuses on one industry (steel) and a small number of firms. There are some good points in the book, but overall it suffers from a biased sample because the author hasn't studied the successful management experiences of Handan and its derivatives.

Steinfeld displays an uncommon ability to view today's China in a fresh light, unbound by the constraints of conventional Western thinking. Highly recommended for anyone seeking to understand modern Chinese economic development and the elusive prospects for China's full participation as a world economic leader.

Unique theory of the state owned enterprise problem.......1998-11-25

The author presents a different perspective on China's state owned enterprise problem. He contends that the problem is not an allocation of property rights issue. Instead, a supposed free market system has been overlaid over a still partially existing command economy. A fascinating theory. If the author is right, China's problems are very deep and will be extremely difficult to solve.

This book works great for a college-level fruit production course, but is also written in a format any enthusiast of growing fruit crops could understand. In addition to general growing techniques, major crops from around the world are described in further detail with regard to their specific production. Additional information on the history of the crops and other non-food uses adds to the enjoyment of learning about the various fruit crops.

A useful reference for a good price.......2007-04-03

A good selection of integrals, although a little crowded and lacking some integral forms found in more comprehensive handbooks. Elliptic, Bessel functions, Error function etc are covered but the tables are limited. It's very convenient to have all these plus formulae for calculus, differential equations, geometry and more in one reference book. Only three and a half pages of Laplace Transform pairs will limit work with Laplace Transforms.

A lot of information is covered in 453 pages including the index. I would have given 5/5 for more integrals and more comprehensive tables of Error, Bessel functions, Elliptic integrals and Laplace Transforms.

A book no engineer should ever be without!!!.......2002-10-18

I actually found this book by accident, while just looking through a store. I picked it up and never put it back. One of the things that I have always struggled with, even as a graduate student, is trying to remember all the basic formulas that make your life a lot easier. Sine/Cosine and the natural log equations have always driven me nuts. Starring at a problem thinking to myself "I bet this reduces to something". If you can say the same thing then this book is for you.

Before I would have to look through ten different books to find what I was looking for, but not anymore. I keep this book with me at all times and am never at a loss.

Each chapter is very specific, with a little theory in the beginning, and then the rest is just easy to use formulas. A real life saver when you just want to find something without having to wade through some lengthy derivations.

Hey, its in integral and formula book... what can I say?.......2001-06-03

Tons and tons of mathematical formulas and integrals ranging from the elementary to the very advanced. The reason I bought this, believe it or not, was because it had the general formula for sums of powers of integers( 1^k + 2^k, + ... + n^k) which I never knew existed untill I purchased it. Anyways... plenty( and I mean plenty!) of useful formulas and integrals which are conveniently marked for easy reference. Here's the listing:

Algebra, Numbers, Geometry, Calculus, Integrals, Inequalities, Ordinary Differential Equations, Partial Diff. Equat., Numerical Methods, Fourier Series and Laplace and Fourier Transforms, Special Functions, and Probability.

Every couple of years, some unlucky soul gets designated as the Poet for People Who Hate Poetry, and now it seems to be Deborah Garrison's turn. It's easy to see why: she gets the voice of the late 20th-century New Yorker to perfection, in all its kvetchy, melancholic glory. At times it's like hearing George Costanza channeling Emily Dickinson:

I'm never going to sleep
with Martin Amis
or anyone famous.

Garrison also tends to sidestep metaphysics in favor of more accessible subject matter. That means love (mostly unrequited) and work (mostly unbearable, particularly for a working girl in a testosterone-driven office, wearied by the appearance of yet "another alpha male-- / a man's man, a dealmaker"). No wonder Garrison seems so appealing. And no wonder her publisher has capitalized on this appeal by packaging her book in such a sleek, chic jacket. It would be a mistake, however, to write her off as one more neurotic light versifier. Her metaphoric agility can take you by surprise: note the Atlantic breeze coming "up out of the surf / like a dog gone swimming, / slagging sand and spray every which way / and making the news unreadable." So, too, can the note of resignation that undergirds so many of Garrison's vignettes-in-verse, giving even her most featherweight performances an odd, unchic intensity.

This is very good poetry: insightful, articulate, and very witty. Garrison is quite deft with the English language and doesn't litter her writing with clever, irrelevant tricks. She keeps her work focused and to the point. She has the snap and sting of Michael Benedikt.

That this book got any attention still blows me away. What a boring bunch of poems that read like a nightmarish open reading. If this is poetry that can actually get into the popular vein, I'm gonna lock myself in the library and not talk to anyone.

Great idea for a collection--poems from the point of view of a female office worker. But there's not much empathy, not much risk, not much music, not much wit, not much anything here. These are above all intellectually and linguistically lazy poems which aim for irony but seldom get beyond archness. No perceptions you couldn't find in the pages of a woman's magazine or on a TV-show about working women--and not even as entertaining as any number of chick lit novels.

Fun, Make-You-Think Reading.......2003-12-02

I picked this book off the shelf by chance. My good luck.

Deborah Garrison's little book of poetry is a treasure. It's funky, funny, wonderful reading. This collection will impress any lover of poetry, whether you just started reading yesterday or you've been a fan for years.

Her writing is accessible. Her writing is real; while she wants to be a "modern" woman, all unoppressed and girl power-ish, she is still a human. And she let's you know that up front. One of the best things about it is that you don't have to break out a dictionary to understand it. And it doesn't take days worth of analyzation to get through a few lines either. Buy it!

Chick-lit poetry.......2003-07-15

It's Bridget Jones country, which I don't think is such a terrible thing. And it's easy to read, which I don't think is such a terrible thing. The poems tell of the men in the poetess's life, from her mother's lovers to her boss, the other men at her job, and her husband. It's in the colloquial style of the English Movement, with something of the American Confessional. Sometimes (at least in the Fight Song) it even scans and rhymes.
The five stars are not because it's GREAT poetry, but because it's enjoyable, true-to-life and readable...
