    Book Description

Can the welfare state survive in an economically integrated world? Many have argued that globalization has undermined national policies to raise the living standards and enhance the economic opportunities of the poor. This book, by sixteen of the world's leading authorities in international economics and the welfare state, suggests a surprisingly different set of consequences: Globalization does not preclude social insurance and egalitarian redistribution--but it does change the mix of policies that can accomplish these ends.

Globalization and Egalitarian Redistribution demonstrates that the free flow of goods, capital, and labor has increased the inequality or volatility of labor earnings in advanced industrial societies--while constraining governments' ability to tax the winners from globalization to compensate workers for their loss. This flow has meanwhile created opportunities for enhancing the welfare of the less well off in poor and middle-income countries. Comprising eleven essays framed by the editors' introduction and conclusion, this book represents the first systematic look at how globalization affects policies aimed at reducing inequalities.

The contributors are Keith Banting, Pranab Bardhan, Carles Boix, Samuel Bowles, Minsik Choi, Richard Johnston, Covadonga Meseguer Yebra, Karl Ove Moene, Layna Mosley, Claus Offe, Ugo Pagano, Adam Przeworski, Kenneth Scheve, Matthew J. Slaughter, Stuart Soroka, and Michael Wallerstein.

5 out of 5 stars Drawn from the lifetime writings and lectures of one of America's most respected economists.......2005-12-12

The seventh volume of the acclaimed "Selected Works of Gordon Tullock" series from Liberty Fund, The Economics And Politics Of Wealth Redistribution begins with an examination of the primary arguments advanced in favor of wealth redistribution. Gordon Tullock (currently a professor of law and economics, and a Distinguished Research Fellow in the Center for Study of Public Choice at George Mason University) then goes on to explore the real-world mechanisms and politics of redistribution in democratic countries, finding that redistribution primarily benefits the middle class and the politically savvy, while neglecting the deserving poor. This seventh volume drawn from the lifetime writings and lectures of one of America's most respected economists, concludes by proposing radical reforms to the modern welfare state.

        Book Description

This book provides an up-to-date synthesis of the many standards of distributional analysis used in the fields of social policy, welfare theory, and public finance. Using only basic constructions of calculus, probability, and the economics of consumer behavior, it develops a consistent mathematical approach into a self-contained and unified treatment of the distribution and redistribution of income.

          Book Description

This book provides a comprehensive survey of optimal income tax theory, following the development of research strategy from the basic Mirrlees model through to its refinements, examining how optimal tax rates and the shape of tax schedules are affected by new considerations. Optimal tax theory has an important contribution to make to tax policy formation, and has become especially pertinent in recent years with the renewal of controversy over whether progressive income tax is in fact desirable or not. The author not only covers the historical background and modern formulations of the theory, but extends his discussion to consider the most important extensions of the model and the interrelation of income tax with other instruments of tax and expenditure policy.

            Book Description

Congressional voting patterns have historically been influenced by party membership and the spread and diversity of viewpoints within the two major parties. The authors examine voting patterns to trace changes in party orientation during the past thirty years. They argue that realignment has sharpened differences between the parties, increased their homogeneity, and heightened the degree to which they are oriented along economic lines.

                Book Description

This book explores the areas of income distribution and welfare. Analyzing redistribution policies develops appropriate techniques to analyze the extent and nature of income inequality and welfare and to measure the direct impact of taxes and government cash transfers on the distribution of income by size of income and other household characteristics. What is the extent of inequality of income and which way is it moving? Is the burden of taxation evenly distributed across the population? Do the rich pay proportionately more or less taxes than the poor? What are the effects of current government programs on the welfare of particular groups in the community? An attempt has been made to answer these and other related questions by an analysis of the Australian data obtained from the 1975–1976 Household Expenditure Survey. Written in a fairly nontechnical manner, Analyzing redistribution policies can be understood with limited knowledge of economics and statistics.

                  Book Description

While income redistribution is one of the most important functions of modern governments, the world has changed greatly since this first edition of Economics of Income Redistribution was published in 1983. Pension systems and medical programs are in a state of crisis in many parts of the world and the general political mood is shifting away from income redistribution. Economics of Income Redistribution (2nd edition) brings this work up to date by discussing the economic and political aspects of income redistribution. It examines the classical moral objective of redistribution to assist the poor, as well as income transfer for pensions, education and intra-family gift giving.

                    Book Description

Since government can use manifold policy instruments at various levels, which influence various social groups, the evaluation of the efficiency of income redistribution is not straight forward. The study in hand contributes to the literature by first applying a multimarket framework to recent theoretical developments in transfer efficiency analysis. A three-stage vertically-structured model including the bread grains market as well as agricultural input industries and the food processing industry is developed and econometrically estimated. This model and standard welfare measures are used to judge the Austrian agricultural policy. It is revealed that in addition to farmers, downstream and upstream industries benefit considerably from agricultural policy. Using nonlinear optimization procedures, it is shown that the applied policy is not Pareto efficient. Applying an optimal policy instead of the current one could Pareto improve the social state by 1.7 billion Austrian Shilling.

In Beyond a Western Bioethics, physicians Angeles Tan Alora and Josephine M. Lumitao join eight other contributors to provide a comprehensive exploration of bioethical issues outside of the dominant American and estern European model. Using the Philippines as a case study, they address how a developing country's economy, religion, and culture affect the bioethical landscape for doctors, patients, families, and the society as a whole.

                              Book Description

An aptitude for physics requires knowledge of both math and logic, making physics questions some of the most difficult on standardized tests. Physics Success in 20 Minutes a Day prepares readers for the challenging physics questions found on exams. The book is broken into quick, but thorough, lessons that can be fit into any schedule, and includes practice tests with full answer explanations.

1 out of 5 stars A disservice to students everywhere.......2007-06-11

I purchased this Physics text as a supplement to my high school mathematics class and was quite disappointed. The pre-test has both typographical errors and mathematical errors in each of the first four questions. I decided not to continue at that point and have decided to return the book. With the credentials of the authors I expected much more from this book. This text is a disservice to students everywhere. Additionally, I have emailed the publisher to share this information with them.

                              1 out of 5 stars Physics Disaster in 20 Minutes a Day.......2007-02-18

I admit that I didn't not go through this whole book. This book begins with a pre-test, and my use of the book ended in the first 8 questions of the pre-test. Five of the first 8 questions had major typos or errors in this book. The first question of the pre-test is not even possible to answer correctly because the answer choices given do not include the answer posted for the question in the back of the book. Other questions within the first 8 included major mistakes in units and typos in the numbers of constants. I would not trust this book to help you learn physics properly as typos and fundamental errors probably exist throughout if they can't even get their pre-test right. I returned this book after going through just 8 problems.

I go to UNCW so I have had the pleasure of taking Professor Graham's class and hearing her stories first hand! I've read both of her books and can't get enough of them. Her writing style is beyond belief. If you pass up this book, you are passing up a world of amazement and humor. This should most def be on your wish list!
