Garfield by the Pound (#22) contains all daily strips from December 5, 1990 through July 6, 1991. At least some of #22's sunday strips can be found in color in The Seventh Garfield Tresury.

4 out of 5 stars Great to read on a Sunday morning........2002-10-03

"Garfield by the Pound" is a cute book, but I enjoyed "Garfield Hang's Out" even more. The humor in this wasn't at it's greatest, but still can make you chuckle. A must for fans - I recommend.

5 out of 5 stars GARFIELD RULES!.......2000-06-24

I have this book it is so GOOD! the one i like the most is the one wher garfield says it's show time then he fall's then he say's it's intermission. HE'S COOOOOOL!

5 out of 5 stars Jim Davis does it again!.......1999-04-24

Whether it be sight gags, puns, just pure silliness, or otherwise, Davis never seems to let up on the creativity of his genius creation. the only difference is the drawings are less crude than in the late 70's-early 80's. The fat cat Garfield is lovable, as is his hapless owner Jon Arbuckle and the clueless canine Odie. The strip has never been boring once, and it's been running for more than 20 years now! Long live Jim Davis! Long live Garfield!

What a lovely book! It comically brings to life the ballet positions and steps using expressive frogs and humorous phrases to do so. The creative art is a fresh look at classical ballet, and all readers will come away with a new view of dance! This fantasia-like book is a must have for anyone who loves ballet!

For half a century, the cold war between the democratic, capitalist United States and the communist Soviet Union defined world politics. And then, in 1989, everything changed. The Warsaw Pact disintegrated, the USSR collapsed, and the Berlin Wall came down. Soon there was (almost) no communist culture left on the planet, just the cultural detritus of a "Communist utopia which, in fact, never existed." J. Hoberman of the Village Voice sifts through the wreckage of that culture, in a series of illuminating essays that take on everything from the Socialist Realist art movement to the novels of Victor Serge. Among the highlights is his "History of Communism in Twenty-Four Scenarios," a batch of film reviews that draws a line through Sergei Eisenstein's October ("the Soviet equivalent of the Sistine Chapel") and the original 1950s version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers to the Reagan-era Red Dawn.

There's also a splendid essay on Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were convicted by the U.S. government of giving H-bomb secrets to the Reds and--amidst much controversy--executed, and who, Hoberman concludes, "were framed for an activity that all available circumstantial and psychological evidence suggests that they committed." It's one of the most effective displays of Hoberman's grasp of history and culture, not to mention his erudite wit: "Someone must have denounced Julius Rosenberg, for without his having done anything wrong, he was arrested one fine evening by the FBI." --Ron Hogan

                  Book Description

For most of the twentieth century, American and European intellectual life was defined by its fascination with a particular utopian vision. Both the artistic and political vanguards were spellbound by the Communist promise of a new human era—so much so that its political terrors were rationalized as a form of applied evolution and its collapse hailed as the end of history.

The Red Atlantis argues that Communism produced a complex culture with a dialectical relation to both modernism and itself. Offering examples ranging from the Stalinist show trial to Franz Kafka's posthumous career as a dissident writer and the work of filmmakers, painters, and writers, which can be understood only as criticism of existing socialism made from within, The Red Atlantis suggests that Communism was an aesthetic project—perhaps the aesthetic project of the twentieth century.

Do you love TV? Do you want a way to silence those poor souls who chastise you for spending too many hours in front of the tube? Glued to the Set is what you've been looking for. NPR commentator, cultural critic, and unapologetic TV-watcher Steven Stark explores six decades of television to find the shows and the events that prove how important this medium has been in the shaping of modern American culture. From Milton Berle's invention of TV-comedy to "ER and the fight for health-care reform," Stark engages in serious, thoroughly researched analysis while occasionally moving his tongue towards his cheek.

He examines the subversive pleasures of The Monkees, and the ways in which sitcoms both reflect and create ideas about family. The book's serious premise is kept afloat by Stark's lively prose, and this allows his points to hit home with a force that would be lost in a more academic arena. After reading Glued to the Set, America's Funniest Home Videos will never seem the same again: "As the theme song says: 'America, America, this is you.'" --Simon Leake

4 out of 5 stars Historians and Sociologists interested in Technology: Read It.......2006-11-06

This book is an excellent example of scholarship that is accessible and fun, and yet theoretically relevant. Anyone interested in how television or, to a broader extent, technology has shaped or been shaped by American culture and social events should read this book. You'll get some great insight, plus half of the fun is just seeing what Stark has to say about your favorite TV programs.

5 out of 5 stars You Won't Look at TV the Same Way Again.......2005-11-09

Mr. Stark has insights on television that you won't find elsewhere. He is fair and thoughtful. Although he appears to be a liberal (albeit with at least some sympathy toward cultural conservatism), you won't often find his analysis colored by party lines. He has positive things to say about Lawrence Welk, Mr. Ed and Ronald Reagan and harsh words about Masterpiece Theater, 60 Minutes and Edward R. Murrow. Moreover, he shows you why you should agree with him even if your initial reaction was quite the opposite. Many of the reviewers remarked that he would be a good person to have a conversation with. I heartily agree. I only wish that he would do a sequel. Reading this 1997 book in 2005 makes you realize just how much has changed since then.

5 out of 5 stars An ideal essayist.......2004-01-29

Mr. Stark has managed to capture what the whole spirit of essay-writing is about: to spark debate and seamlessly incorporate the various (and often needlessly divorced) disciplines, be it sociology, psychology, design, media, education, etc.

Many other reviewers on this democratic yet altogether newfangled 'Amazon' service have expressed displeasure at Stark's omissions and/or the marketing of the book. For those who expected a simple list of the Best Shows of All Time, you should not bother with books to begin with; yet if you persist in reading, I suggest you start with Ziauddin Sardir's essay about list and rank obsession in 'The A to Z of Postmodern Life'.

Mr. Stark's cause, I believe (and teach my students) is to provoke the very debate and discussion that has prompted both 1 and 5 star rankings. He is perhaps one of the most effective essayists of our time, for he manages to incorporate opinion, research, and a broader historical view by referencing the very (and only) things that give our American culture its ballast. Most importantly, he manages to do this without falling into the academic sophism that describes much of the current film/video literature.

5 out of 5 stars Not Supposed to be about the 60 GREATEST shows.......2002-12-26

This book is not meant to be about the 60 greatest shows ever to appear on television. It is not, in reality, a book about television at all, but rather about sociology. It analyzes the impact of television on American life, and, conversely, the impact of American life on television.

Bravo to Mr. Stark for writing a book which gives us much more than so many other books do in discussing television. Mr. Stark actually makes us think about its impact.

                      1 out of 5 stars Doh!.......2000-08-29

Anybody who thinks they're writing a book about the sixty best television shows ever made yet somehow doesn't include The Simpsons is obviously so stupid and ignorant that no further comment need be made. Time for this windy old hack to be sent to the glue factory.

                              Book Description

Today's students want to practice the application of concepts, not just study applications of concepts. As with the previous editions of this book, the authors wrote to balance the coverage of concepts, tools, techniques, and their applications, and to provide the most examples of system analysis and design deliverables available in any book. The textbook also serves the reader as a professional reference for best current practices.

2 out of 5 stars Does a fair job as an introduction but I will be selling my copy.......2006-12-31

I bought this textbook as it was required for one of my courses. I would not consider using any of the advice offered in practice - the book is outdated and very far removed from the reality of software development processes today. Consider picking up a book on the Unified Process or one of the many books on agile methods instead.

2 out of 5 stars Extremely repetitive book.......2006-03-25

I had to purchase this book as part of a graduate course in information systems. Beign myself a professional programmer and engineer, I am familiar with most of the terms and cases presented in this book. Unfortunately, the material is repeated over and over again. A 50 pages chapter perhaps have less than 10 pages useful content. Some of the topics are irrelevant but they spend a considerable amount of time on them. In short: I will not recomend this book unless you are willing to spend long hours filtering the content or you are forced to buy it as part of a college class.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Educational Text Book.......2006-02-20

This book is extremely helpful. It uses step by step guides to help the reader fully understand the content, plus a life-like story line to help the reader understand the placement of the information studied. I would recommend it to any student or professional who wishes to better their knowledge and understanding of analysis and design of an information system.

4 out of 5 stars Good educational reference.......2006-02-16

This book describes the general process of the lifecycle of software management, design, analysis and development. The newest edition covers the most updated technology(eg. use case, sequence diagram, data model, database design, UI design etc).
