Before the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, private marketeering was regarded not only as criminal, but even immoral by socialist regimes. Ten years after taking on board western market-orientated shock therapy, post-socialist societies are still struggling to come to terms with the clash between these deeply engrained moralities and the daily pressures to sell and consume.

This book explores the new market and its resulting contradictions in a rapidly developing Eastern Europe and Russia. Will Western fast-food industries irrevocably alter local culinary practices? This book can be hard going but if you grasp the theories and understand how they are linked with jurisprudence than you will enjoy the book.

The most important book on philosophy of law ever published.......2001-01-27

This is undoubtely the most important book on philosophy of law ever written. It's the book that broke paradigms (in the Thomas Kuhn sense of expression)and brought scientific dignity to the study of law. You can divide the science of law between "before and after" the Pure Theory. Even other really important books, like "the Concept of Law", by Hart, or "On Law and Justice", by Alf Ross, would be not possible if Kelsen hadn't written this book first.

No doubts Kelsen is to be considered a watershed specially concerned to juridical thought. His efforts to break with the natural theories' tradition is of maximum importance for the basis on what the concepts of law and right were built. What is to be focused - as the importance of the works of Hans Kelsen is no new - is the impossibility of having his theory as the only one to be appliable to modern juridical dogmatics. Reading Kelsen is deffinitely a must for the ones who intend to study Law in deep. Nevertheless is to be kept in mind that his work is not and end in itself,but a solid and well structured beginning point.

Hans Kelsen in the most important legal theorist of the 20th century. This short book is the best introduction to his third way between empiricist and natural law approaches in the philosophy of law. The density of Kelsen's prose is alleviated in part by Paulson's excellent introduction. An important book.

Hans Kelsen is commonly considered to be among the founding fathers of modern legal philosophy. Despite Kelsen's prominence as a legal theorist, his political theory has so far been mostly overlooked. This book argues that Kelsen's legal theory, the Pure Theory of Law, needs to be read in the context of Kelsen's political theory. It offers the first comprehensive interpretation of the Pure Theory that makes systematic use of Kelsen's conception of the rule of law, of his theory of democracy, his defense of constitutional review, and his views on international law. Once it is read in the context of Kelsen's political works, Kelsen's analysis of legal normativity provides us with a notion of political legitimacy that is distinct from any comprehensive and contestable theory of justice. It shows how members of pluralist societies can reasonably acknowledge the binding nature of law, even where its content does not fully accord with their own substantive views of the requirements of justice, provided it is created in accordance with an ideal of fair arbitration amongst social groups. This result leads to a fundamental re-evaluation of the Pure Theory of Law. The theory is best understood as an attempt to find a middle ground between natural law and legal positivism. Later positivist legal theorists inspired by Kelsen's work failed to appreciate the political-theoretical context of the Pure Theory and turned to a narrow instrumentalism about the functions of law. The perspective on Kelsen offered in this book aims to reconnect positivist legal thought with normative political theory.

Great book, bad publishing.......2006-03-22

I enjoyed the book until about page 200, when the pages were out of order (not the page numbers, the text) and diagrams were missing. This edition of the book should be pulled from Amazon. Buy the paperback instead, the publisher got it right.

The Quantum Reality Einstein Could Not Suppose.......2003-11-03

In 1935 Einstein, Rosen and Podolsky raised a serious criticism of quantum theory in the form of a paradox. The criticism meant that quantum theory brings about a "spooky action at distance" or "entanglement" between quantum subsystems. Two photons generated at a point with a correlation, for example, continue to have the correlation even after they are separated by a great distance, and a change in the state of one of them affects the other instantaneously. In 1964 John Bell proposed a mathematical theorem experimentally to test the existence of entanglement. Alain Aspect carried out such an experiment in 1982 to show that entanglement is a reality.

Even one of the greatest physicists in history, Albert Einstein, could not suppose that entanglement would be a reality. So it must be quite difficult to make ordinary person understand it. Amir Aczel tried to do this difficult task in this book, but he does not seem to have well succeeded. Just half of a total of 20 chapters is spent to describe the history of quantum mechanics, though a short mention about entanglement appears at a few places. Thus the reader who learned quantum mechanics to some extent at least would find the first half of the book rather tedious. From the story of debate between Einstein and Bohr in chapter 11, the book becomes interesting. However, the author explains neither Bell's theorem nor the details of many experiments understandably. On the final page, the author reveals the reason of difficulty in understanding entanglement writing, "... the quantum theory does not tell us why things happen the way they do; why are the particles entangled?" Was our expectation to the author too big?

A good point of the book is that it includes biographical descriptions of a lot of physicists related to quantum theory and entanglement. I have learned for the first time that Thomas Young, famous for the double slit experiment, was a child prodigy. Schrödinger's anecdotal "entanglement" with women are also told. A bad point is that writing and printing are made rather carelessly. For example, von Neumann's proof of the non-existence of hidden variable in quantum mechanics and John Bell's later challenge to Neumann's assumption are repeatedly described on pages 101 and 102. There are many typos, and especially the contents of pages 234 and 235 should be interchanged. This error, combined with sudden appearance of the description of Borromean rings on page 232, makes the reader confused around these pages.

So Easy to Understand it should be a Gradeschool text.......2003-10-14

This book makes the understanding of the greatest ideas in science as expressed mathematically that it should be taught to gradeschoolers.
It gives anyone who has ever breezed over the commutative property of addition/multiplication in math as simply fundamental, and without depth, a real understanding of exactly how important that property actually is; by logically and simply linking it directly to the uncertainty principal; helping some to understand it easily.
The rest of the book past the point of the commutative property and uncertainty does the same in the same fashion; and whos carese about tiepows if the message is being goteen across...understanding is what's important.
I digress...maybe it should be required reading only in magnet or schools for the more mentally endowed; however I see it as simply brilliant. (This review actually written by Brian Harred, I'm in my girlfriend's account because she was at amazon.com last on this computer).
Seriously, I highly recomend this book to anyone with an intuitive understanding of math and physics, but needs a really good, quick refresher...Brian Harred (also, how did that big blue statement about voting on our own reviews get RIGHT below my thoughts? The stars are not votes; they are the reviewer's opion as expressed in "stars"...

More of a review than speculation.......2003-07-22

The majority of the book is a review of the history of physics leading up to the current understanding of entanglement, including much biographical information about the major players in the quantum mechanics arena. I would have liked to see more than just that last short chapter talking about the implications and possibilities of entanglement.

Great idea, horrible execution.......2003-06-03

Before tackling this book, I had read some of Dr. Aczel's other works, such as The Mystery of the Aleph and Fermat's Last Theorem. I found those books quite enjoyable, so when I heard that he had published a new book on quantum entanglement, I could hardly wait to grab a copy.

After reading it through, I must say I am sorely disappointed to the work. I am still somewhat unclear as to what exactly entanglement is in any depth. His explanations, which are repeated at least a dozen times to no effect, are poor and left me confused. Diagrams are peppered throughout the book with no explanation or captions, leaving one to think that they're there just for eye-candy. Typos abound in the book and some pages are misnumbered (pages 232-4 especially). The book goes on and on about John Bell's famous theorem, but I am still confused as to what this theorem was and why we should care about it. In fact, the practical effects of entanglement aren't even gotten to until practically the last chapter -- the entire rest of the book is simply a biography on those who are or were working on entanglement.

Too little, again.......2001-10-19

Beckett at 22. Who could write that essay at 22, but Beckett? In fairness, most of the ideas are from Joyce's mouth to Beckett's pen: but it is Beckett's pen, not Joyce's mouth that interests us. Lines scarely better than those in Beckett's "Proust".

The danger, after all, is in the neatness of identifications.

Good, rare occasional pieces.......2000-02-06

The hard to find piece "Dante...Bruno.Vico..Joyce" is included in this collection, and for this piece only, this is valuable for all Beckett enthusiasts. "Dante" was the leadoff essay to a collection of essays by James Joyce's peers on "Work in Progress," which later became "Finnegans Wake." Beckett's insight into the works of Dante, Vico and Joyce is scary (I'm not sure that Beckett cared too much about Bruno). These three figures have come to be important influences in Beckett's writings, and the fusion of Dante and Joyce reveals the very core of Beckett's own oeuvre. (This is the piece where Beckett defiantly stated: "Here form is content, content is form." Also, the line: "Literary criticism is not book-keeping.") In any case, Beckett the great prose-stylist, a healthy rival to Joyce, demonstrates his worth as a critic, perhaps the best critic of Joyce. Also, included in this book is the "Three Dialogues" with Georges Duthuit. This is the classic pseudo-interview that reveals some of Beckett's greatests remarks on art:

"Yet I speak of an art turning from it in disgust, weary of its puny exploits, weary of pretending to be able, of being able, of doing a little better the same old thing, of going a little further along a dreary road."

"The stars are undoubtedly superb, as Freud remarked on reading Kant's cosmological proof of the existence of God."

"All that should concern us is the acute and increasing anxiety of the relation itself, as though shadowed more and more darkly by a sense of invalidity, of inadequacy, of existence at the expense of all that it excludes, all that it blinds to."

Superb. It's hard to imagine giving good word to Beckett. It is better to let these words trickle, slide, and coagulate on their own. As Beckett quoted from Freud, "The stars are undoubtedly superb..."
