Book Description
Why did Eastern Europeans protest less about the brutal social consequences of systemic change than the people of Latin America a decade earlier? Why has the region-wide authoritarian or populist turnabout not occurred? Why has democracy in these countries proved to be crisis-proof? In what ways has economic crisis impacted on the politics of the region?
In addressing these questions, this book uses a comparative analysis of the structures, institutions, cultures, and actors shaping both the Eastern European and the Latin American transformations. The author argues that structural, institutional, and cultural factors have put a brake on destabilizing collective actions which have paved the way for the emergence of the enduring, low-level equilibrium between incomplete democracy and imperfect market economy which seems set to characterize the Eastern European experience for the foreseeable future.

Comex Systems has over 30 years experience helping students pass CLEP examinations. This book is designed to prepare students for the subject test in Business Law. It contains content review, sample exercises and a sample test.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-03-09
It's a great book. It's clearly written, Making it easy to understand. But for more details in business law you might need more then this book.
Not Helfpful.......2006-09-27
I used this book to review for the Intro to Business Clep and I found that alot of the terms and context of questions were not covered in this study guide. This book as not helpful and a waste of my money.
Comex guides very helpful.......2006-07-31
The Comex study guides are extremely helpful. They summarize the CLEP tests and give you a basis for study. They also ask questions and give you explanations. very useful.
Customer Reviews:
Not best book, but works.......2005-07-25
I used only this book to study for the CLEP test and passed. This is the 5th CLEP test I have taken and it was probably the hardest, however I did pass it with this book. It does assume that you know some terms to start off with (I didn't have any knowledge) and so depending on how well you want to know the subject, I would recommend getting an additional book. If you just want to pass with the basics then this book should work.
Book not proofread and contains inherently conflicting data.......2005-04-26
I have not yet taken the CLEP in this subject. Luckily, I also have Barrons Business Review. I also have 20+ years' experience working in a law office. This CLEP review book has typos throughout, which is irritating and reflects a lack of care. I also lost a HUGE amount of time on two final test questions in the book because the book says one thing on one page and another on the other. "Costs avoided" when calculating damages in a breach of contract are explained in absolutely contradictory ways between one place and another. I thought I was nuts and finally realized the book stinks. Also, when I began studying Barron's, I realized how much more will probably be on the exam (which from reading other reviews on this site appears to be true). I am studying Barron's carefully. My test is in about 3 weeks. Wish me luck! But this one by Thomas Orr is junk. don't waste your money unless your only goal is to have some practice exam questions (but watch out, cause some of the answers are WRONG!)
Minimal CLEP Help.......2004-02-22
I failed the CLEP using this book. There was way too much information missing. Topics on Employment Law and Environmental Law were not even covered. I studied from Barron's Business Law before taking the test again, and passed. Barron's provides very useful examples and YOU SHOULD REMEMBER boxes that are very applicable to the test. You need to study more for this CLEP then the others. This was the hardest CLEP I have taken. Good Luck
I really like this book.......2004-02-12
No, the book is not perfect. Comex's review for Principles of Management it outstanding, giving all the information needed. This book is only half that wonderful. Like everyone else said, it only covers half of the information.
I passed the Principles of Management with a 72. I read this book 1 1/2 times, and sort of skimmed the Barron's Review and got a 56 on the Business Law. Same amount of prep time, but a much lower grade. This CLEP really is harder, I think because the study guides are not as good.
My advice depends on how much of a risk you want to take. I think I would have still got a 56 without the Barron's Review. If you want to pass the first time and be thoroughly prepared, read this book first then carefully read the Barron's Review.
If you do not want to over study and do not mind the minimal grade, try just using this book. It would certainly be faster. If you do that really know everything this book covers, and be prepared to have to take it again.
Worthless Book.......2003-07-09
This book was absolutely worthless! As a conservative estimate, this book may have covered one-fifth of the test questions! I have taken two other CLEP exams and passed them with 17 and 19 points higher than required (using only one book). I failed this exam by five points. You will definitely need additional study material if you purchase this book.
Customer Reviews:
dont buy this, get Barron's.......2002-03-18
what a waste of paper, those poor dead trees that suffered to produce this steaming pile of B.S. This is not CLEP preparation material, not all of this guy's prep books are this bad, this may be the worst.
Buy Barron's book (no I don't work for Barrons)
Introductory Business Law (CLEP).......2000-03-14
I knew all the questions in the book but it did not prepare me for the actual exam. I have used other CLEP study guides and did very well on the exams. This book did not thoroughly prepare me.
Introductory Business Law (CLEP).......2000-03-07
I knew all the questions in the book but it did not prepare me for the actual exam. I have used other CLEP study guides and did very well on the exams. This book was not helpful in preparing me for the CLEP. The questions were too easy and it did not include a course summary, which would have been helpful.
Introductory Business Law.......2000-03-02
Much to easy. I knew all the answers to the booklet questions but they were of no help in the real exam.
Too much irrelevant information.......1999-11-17
This book consists solely of series of examinations regarding business law which, unfortunately for me, had little or no relevance to the actual questions on the CLEP exam. It lacks a topical index, explanations, summary or other helps that one would expect from a CLEP prep book. Save your money for something by another author (I'm still looking).

Book Description
The Ras superfamily (>150 human members) encompasses Ras GTPases involved in cell proliferation, Rho GTPases involved in regulating the cytoskeleton, Rab GTPases involved in membrane targeting/fusion and a group of GTPases including Sar1, Arf, Arl and dynamin involved in vesicle budding/fission. These GTPases act as molecular switches and their activities are controlled by a large number of regulatory molecules that affect either GTP loading (guanine nucleotide exchange factors or GEFs) or GTP hydrolysis (GTPase activating proteins or GAPs). In their active state, they interact with a continually increasing, functionally complex array of downstream effectors.
Since the last Methods in Enzymology volume on this topic in 2000, Rho GTPases have continued to receive a huge amount of attention. The human genome sequence has revealed the full extent of the Rho GEF and Rho GAP families (over 80 members for each) and the challenge of identifying the molecular interactions and cellular pathways influenced by each of these regulators is a daunting prospect. This new volume describes some of the methods currently being used to examine Rho family GTPase regulation at the biochemical and cellular level.
*Describes the methods currently being used to examine Rho family GTPase regulation at the biochemical and cellular levels.
*Includes new imaging techniques that revolutionize the ability to visualize GTPase activities.
*Over 150 international contributors.

Book Description
This volume provides a unique collection of detailed chapters from some of the leading research groups in the world, many of which have made key discoveries in the field. This allows for particularly insightful discussion of the current understanding of Rho function.
Work on signal transduction pathways involving Rho family GTPases started some ten years ago. There is now a realization that these highly conserved molecular switches not only serve to coordinate cytoskeletal organization but also impact on diverse aspects of cell biology such as membrane trafficking, transcriptional regulation and mitotic progression.
Humans contain more than 20 Rho type GTPases. This volume not only presents a detailed phylogenetic analysis of Rho proteins, but also discusses the possible origins of the human members. Such an analysis of human Rho GTPases has not previously been attempted.
The book includes an overview of how Rho GTPases become activated which is complemented by an extensive Chapter by Darerca Owen and Helen Mott who unravel the beautiful molecular details given to us by the many structural studies of Rho GTPases.
The key areas currently being investigated in relation to these ubiquitous proteins are described for both in vitro and in vivo systems. These are presented in a format that ensures the reader can approach the topic with minimal background knowledge, while ultimately bringing the subject to the level of an expert. Timely and highly authoritative, this volume illuminates newer findings, particularly as they relate to Rho proteins in vertebrate biology.

Book Description
Field Theory presents the recent advances of perturbative relativistic field theory in a pedagogical and straightforward way. It will be of interest to graduate students who intend to specialize in high-energy physics.
Customer Reviews:
A grad student's viewpoint.......2006-03-10
This book, unlike "standard" texts like Peskin & Schroeder, deals more with the formal aspects of field theory, and may not be so useful for the person interested in phenomenology. Wilsonian RG is missing too, but it's a great place for an introduction to gauge theory. The misprints can be annoying, but at the same time keep you on your toes. The presentation is somewhat terse, and to work through a page of this book can be equivalent to working through several pages of another book, say Peskin & Schroeder.
A good book to learn Feynman diagrams.......2000-05-12
A reader can learn how to compute the Green's functions and the scattering amplitudes using Feynman diagrams. The scalar Klein-Gordon field is used as a pedagogical example at the beginning. The philosophy of the path integral is used all over the book. However, the book does not emphasize the philosophy of the Wilson renormalization group and in this sense the primer is not modern. Nevertheless, Pierre Ramond is a pretty famous scientist and you can learn many things from this book.

Ties That Bind: The Story of an Afro-Cherokee Family in Slavery and Freedom (American Crossroads)
ASIN: 0807856029
Release Date: 2005-04-20 |
Book Description
When nineteen-year-old Harriett Gold, from a prominent white family in Cornwall, Connecticut, announced in 1825 her intention to marry a Cherokee man, her shocked family initiated a spirited correspondence debating her decision to marry an Indian. Eventually, Gold's family members reconciled themselves to her wishes, and she married Elias Boudinot in 1826. After the marriage, she returned with Boudinot to the Cherokee Nation, where he went on to become a controversial political figure who was editor of the first Native American newspaper.
Providing rare firsthand documentation of race relations in the early nineteenth-century United States, this volume collects the Gold family correspondence during the engagement period as well as letters the young couple sent to the family describing their experiences in New Echota (capital of the Cherokee Nation) during the years prior to the Cherokee Removal. In an introduction providing historical and social contexts, Theresa Strouth Gaul offers a literary reading of the correspondence, highlighting the value of the epistolary form and the gender and racial dynamics of the exchange. As Gaul demonstrates, the correspondence provides a factual accompaniment to the many fictionalized accounts of contacts between Native Americans and Euroamericans and supports an increasing recognition that letters form an important category of literature.
