Book Description

A great deal of reactionary political fire in the Mountain West has been aimed at environmental protection measures that are perceived to have destroyed or diminished the livelihoods of long-time residents. Conventional wisdom sees the economic woes afflicting the region-declining pay, growing inequality, persistent poverty-as a direct result of increasingly strict environmental regulations that have crippled natural resource industries such as mining and logging.

In Post-Cowboy Economics, economists Thomas Michael Power and Richard Barrett provide a new interpretation of the economy of the Mountain West. Based on evidence from a wide variety of sources, including data on individual employment and income histories of more than 300,000 residents, they clearly demonstrate that the region's economic misfortunes are not the result of changes in regional industrial structure but rather are local manifestations of pervasive national and international trends. The authors:

The authors' analysis and interpretation make a compelling case that despite incomes that are low compared to the rest of the country, the region is not suffering from general impoverishment, and that environmental protection, rather than threatening economic well-being, enhances welfare and protects the very source of the economic vitality that the Mountain West enjoys. Throughout, they argue that fearful, crisis driven environmental and economic development policies are unnecessary and inappropriate, and often counterproductive.

Post-Cowboy Economics is an important work for professionals and scholars involved with environmental policy, economic development, and resource management, as well as anyone interested in the future of the American West.

5 out of 5 stars Mountain West Myth Busting.......2003-12-01

The authors take a sharp needle to the over-inflated myth that the resource extraction industries (e.g., timber, mining, ranching) are the only ticket out of a downward trend in hourly pay in the region. Post-Cowboy Economics does the hard, analytical work that is required to get to the real root cause of why wages are generally lower in the Mountain West. To make its point, the authors focus on labor and demographic data over the years from 1978 to 1998.

What you learn from their research:

1. The contracting resource extraction industries in the Mountain West appear to have been driven by a pervasive national pattern in which jobs shifted from good production to services.
2. The decline in average pay was due to downward pressure on pay in almost all industries (i.e., the loss of "good" paying jobs).
3. The declines in pay during the 1980's were largely due to back-to-back national recessions. Although national in extent, the recessions hit the Mountain West hard.
4. During the 80's and 90's technological advances and globalization of the American economy emerged as forces that caused the demand for labor to move from workers with little education and few skills toward workers with greater education and skills. These forces were felt the most in rural communities.

The most interesting revelation for me came about when the authors compared wages to the population of the community. The data clearly shows the largest cities provide the best wages, and as you go down in population, the wages follow. This means that in comparing average pay in the Mountain West and the rest of the country, its important to consider where people live and work. Residents who live in the Mountain West typically live in smaller communities than other Americans. And this accounts for the gap in pay.

The authors devote some time on how to form public policy in light of this post-cowboy economy. And thankfully its not one that looks backward to the good old days of job creation based on resource exploitation.

        Book Description

Liberal theory of contract is traditionally associated with the view according to which contract law can be explained simply as a mechanism for the enforcement of promises. The book bucks this trend by offering a theory of contract law based on a careful philosophical investigation of not only the similarities, but also the much-overlooked differences between contract and promise.

The goal of this transdisciplinary book is to identify the problems and challenges facing implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) – from the global, regional and local points of view. The valuation and conservation of biodiversity constitute critical first steps necessary for the adequate protection of the environment. The authors give insights into the current trends in this field and on the influences the CBD exerts.

                                Book Description

It amazes children, as they try to count themselves out of numbers, only to discover one day that the hundreds, thousands, and zillions go on forever—to something like infinity. And anyone who has advanced beyond the bounds of basic mathematics has soon marveled at that drunken number eight lying on its side in the pages of their work. Infinity fascinates; it takes the mind beyond its everyday concerns—indeed, beyond everything—to something always more. Infinity makes even the infinite universe seem small; yet it can also be infinitesimal. Infinity thrives on paradox, and it turns the simplest arithmetic on its head, with 1 seeming feasibly to equal 0, after all. Infinity defies common sense. The contemplation of it has relieved at least two great mathematicians of their sanity. Thoroughly readable and entirely accessible, science writer Brian Clegg’s lively history explores infinity in its many intriguing facets, from its ancient origins to its place today at the heart of mathematics and science. He examines infinity’s paradoxes and profiles the people who first grappled with and then defined and refined them, offering information, mystery, and poetry to conceive the inconceivable and define the indefinable.

Unfortunately this book ignores the contributions of the ancient Indians. Infinity did not start with the Greeks. In fact, the Greeks had big troubles with infinity. The ancient Indians had much more fruitful investigations into infinity, especially the Jains before Aritstotle. After the ancient Greeks, the Indians continued to study infinity, including Aryabhata and the Kerala School.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining and somewhat informative.......2004-08-26

I know that Clegg is trying to reach a broad audience and I think he writes well enough to succeed. But I think that by skipping certain details he underestimates the ability of his readers.

For example, I was disappointed that he did not adequately explain Weierstrass' great epsilon-delta explanation of limits, which turns infinity in the calculus into a facon de parler, nothing mysterious after all.

In his discussion of Bolzano, I learned interesting things about his political conflicts but it wasn't clear what he contributed to better understanding the real numbers.

He mentions that Gabriel's Horn has infinite surface area but volume pi, which is fascinating, but he gives no explanation of why these results hold.

But I did learn about the belated 1993 publication of an important work by Leibniz on indivisibles, as well as a few other valuable tidbits, so the book was useful to me as a professional.

4 out of 5 stars Good look at math history through one idea.......2004-02-17

I enjoy these types of books that track one idea through history. This book tracks the concept of infinity through history. It gives you a good look at the history as math as well as good insight into infinity. I thought Clegg did a good job making the concepts understandable for a "lay" person. If you are interested in math history, this book is a worthwhile read.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but I wish he'd give more details.......2003-12-30

I liked the book. Clegg covers both the concept of infinity and its companion, the concept of infinitesimal, from Greek days to the present, in a way I found very readable. I have very little to complain about except that I found it sometimes frustrating that his treatment oversimplified and didn't give enough details.

(For example, he has a chapter on Abraham Robinson's nonstandard analysis. I think that, next to Cantor, Robinson's ideas are probably the most important on the subject of anyone who has worked in it, yet I felt I did not get an adequate picture of Robinson's ideas of infinity and infinitesimals from the chapter.)

Still, it is the best book on the subject at a "popular" level I have seen.

5 out of 5 stars To Infinity and beyond!!.......2003-11-26

I love how Brian Clegg ingeniously expounds upon the concept of infinity challenging our minds to go beyond previously defined limits of the notion. Bizarre paradoxes, strange people and brilliant metaphors make the whole s move from the mundane to delightfully inspiring and I'm not really a fan of science.

okay, i admit, i'm very picky when it comes to decorating. i recently had a baby and when it came to designing her room, i was in a quandry as to how we ideally wanted to decorate it. I'm a designer, so i prefer to stray from the pack and create a unique environment, yet still maintaining comfort and class. This book brought it all together! The colors, themes and choice of furniture were ideal to what we had in mind. No corny ideas in this book. The rooms are designed so that they can grow with the baby for a while as well. I'm hoping our little girl will enjoy her garden theme for at least 5 more years :) If you're one to do projects, the book instructs you on how they created a few of the room accents...a floral coat rack, for example.
Great ideas, great photography, great book.

I have read many Daphne du Maurier books. As I began this book, I started to get bored with the 14th century characters. Determined to finish the book, I took special note of the unusual names and locations in order to fully understand the various plots; and I finished the book with its surprise ending making it worth the while. As everyone knows, du Maurier is a great writer. Anyone that could dream this situation up has a great imagination.

Daphne Du Maurier is best known for her masterpiece, Rebecca; however, I think The House on the Strand, is just as good if not better. The House on the Strand introduces a clever idea of a way of time-traveling that is simple, and doesn't leave you confused after you have read the explanation. This is also no fantasy land that Richard Young (the main character) travels to. After Young drinks a mysterious potion, he finds himself in the exact place where he was before...except now he's in the fourteenth century. I recommend this book to anyone who likes history, time travel, or mystery.

The only other book I have read by du Maurier was Rebecca, absolute ages ago. I never thought of reading her again till a fellow sci fi fan suggested I try it. What a wonderful surprise! Her characters both present and past were real to me, and the journey that Dick takes certainly time travel rather drug induced (which the doctor concludes). Gave me some interesting things to think about along the line of what our mind holds from generation to generation and how reincarnation might just play a role. And I of course had a great urge to try some liquid in that vial!

I did have a problem at the end, which seems to suggest a very Freudian answer to all of this, and seems to conclude that it was all a hallucinatory dream. Sorry, don't buy it. It was time travel. Well, in my eyes anyway.

BTW I found that this author writes in a similar vein to Norah Loft, another historical fiction writer of the same time period. If you liked this book, you might want to check hers out as well, starting with Bless This House, in which she does some time traveling in a different sort of way. Also, with historical references, you might read Katherine by Anya Seton after this one, as the time period of the first is just after the latter.

Daphne Du Maurier's THE HOUSE ON THE STRAND receives a powerful reading by narrator Michael Maloney - perhaps influenced by his many Shakespeare roles on the London stage - as it tells of an experiment which transports one Dick to 14th century Cornwall where he becomes involved with medieval murder and intrigue. But the question remains: is he really moving through time, or is it all a dream?
